Subject: Dutch Translators Needed Please

Many years ago  Wilma J. Vande Berg of the  Greater Sioux County
Genealogical Society sent me a series of newspaper articles from the
De Volksvriend Dutch Language Newspaper of Orange City, Sioux Co.,
Iowa. At that time I recruited three volunteers to translate them.
They are  Anton Vedders, Eric Postma, Peter van Schaik whom I have
lost track of. I took what they translated and published it online.

Recently  I stumbled on some more articles which I had either had
translated, not published, and lost the translations to or, never had
translated. So once again I am seeking someone who can translate
Dutch. Understand this is not modern Dutch but rather the old Dutch
this makes translation a little more difficult. A lot of the articles
are one sentence example Mrs L D Hobson went to see her sister
yesterday, although a few are a little lengthy, describing Political
or Civic meetings they had attended. These articles are from the mid
1880s through the late 1890s.

If I get more then 1 volunteer as I did last time I will split them up
evenly. These articles concern my G-g-father L D Hobson Esq., whom I
am now writing a book about. Any help would be appreciated.

This is not guaranteed to be the correct WILLIAM,
but he *is* approximately the correct age, and DIVORCED (in 1910) -

Found at http://familysearch.org
looking for WILLIAM CROSS in CLERMONT COUNTY, OHIO
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MLNJ-Y5J
- also verified at Ancestry.com -
1910 Wayne, Clermont, Ohio
Earl Jones head M 28y Ohio; married.1 4 years
Lena Jones wife F 34y Ohio
William Cross boarder M 50y Ohio; divorced; farm laborer
NOTE: adjacent to a VAN CAMP household, which just happens to be
the maiden name of EVA S SOUTH's mother!
COMMENT: could possibly EARL JONES actually be his son EARL CROSS ?
The age is correct for his son.
(yes, that could possibly mean that Earl was "double-census'ed".)
Or possibly are Earl & Lena related to the Van CAMPs?

(Compare to William CROSS from Clermont County in my previous msg.)

Hi Bob
Yes that is my mothers family. Her parents were Elbert and Emma Eunice Shores.
She was born in Penna Jan 1916.

I do not know the names on the Rowe stones but do know they are 1950 or
later.  My source for the location was my aunt. She said my brother was on the
other side of the cemetery from her mother. No I have not gone to the cemetery
as it is in Vestal NY and I live in Jacksonville AR.

I have posted on genforum and on  a Broome county board. I have also had a
person there research the state death records as well as contacted the state
library and the cemetery itsself.

My grandmother I believe was from around Ulster Pa and my grandfather Sheshequin
area but are in bradford county.
At one time I saw a copy of a marriage record for my mom but its been years
since. It was a church wedding. It was in a booklet.

I am wondering if it might be possible he died in Penna while visiting? Their is
no one I can ask as my mom died in 1949. My grandmother died in 1934 and my
grandfather was killed in a auto accident in NJ in 1937.

Who are on the Rowe stones? Who is buried on the opposite side, of what
stone? What is your source for this?

Have you gone to the Cemetery? is there a foot stone perhaps covered in
soil and grass.

You have not placed a query on NYBROOME, PASUSQUE,r PA-SUSQUEHANNA,
SHORES or ROWE.

Where did your grandparents come from in PA and where was you mother born?

I find this on familysearch.org?

Hello everyone.

Because a lot of folks over the years have questioned the value of having
genealogy information on a website, I thought I'd take this opportunity to
report that ManyRoads (my website) recently received its 200,000th visitor.

You may read the posting/ announcement here:

Does any of this help? I don't know, but it does mean that some amount of my

Not sure if this was posted about before but ijust noticed it and thought I'd

The Ohio Historical Society has added an online (searchable) index of inmates’
case records from the Boys Industrial School in Lancaster
and the Girls Industrial School in Delaware to improve access to this resource
for genealogical and family history research. Currently, this
database indexes the admission records for the Girls Industrial School from 1869
to 1943, and the admission records for the Boys Industrial
School from 1858 to 1944.

What did you ask of which cemetery and what did the cemetery office
say back to you?
Did the cemetery have and send you the the locations of Rowe burials?

You posted essentially the same query you wrote here in in 2006 and
again in Nov 2010, 18 months ago with one response, a correction.

Ask on the Broome Board and on the NYBROOME list for a Random Act of
Genealogical Kindness, RAOGK. Ask for someone one to go to the
cemetery and look for the stones.

Is anyone on this list from the area near W. Damascus, PA and willing to
check cemeteries and/ or local newspapers?

I'm looking for the birth and death dates of Phebe (Merritt) Scott. She
died between 1888 and 1890 based on two different accounts I've found
(an online tree and her husband's obit). She lived in West Damascus,
Wayne Co, PA and her husband's (Richard Scott's) obit says he was buried
in Damascus, so it seems likely they are in the same plot.

I have been in touch with the Wayne Co. Historical Society, but they
said they do not have burial listings for this couple.

If anyone can check out the cemeteries in that area and possibly take a
picture of Phebe's stone or check local newspapers, I'd be happy to

Hi,
In doing my ancestor research I have found a connection to a Capt. Henry
Connelly who served in NC during the Revolutionary War, he is my 5th
Great-Grandfather. I have seen copies where other descendents applied to the
Sons of the American Revoluntion, but I have not seen where anyone applied to
the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Has anyone else found information on either the Sons of the American Revolution
or the Daughters of the American Revolution connected to an ancestor or has
anyone applied to either organization? I would like to know what is required to
apply and how difficult it is to obtain the necessary evidence to prove the
relationship.

To prove your ancestor is just what you should already be doing. You will need
actual documents that show your connection back to the ancestor and then
documentation that they were part of the revolution.

Here is a link about membership:

Funny this came in my inbox-I was just inquiring abt this and a friend emailed
me back. She is a Regent in her area.

She said if you have a proven patriot (one that is in DARs system and not
'closed'), you would need to prove from yourself to that member with
documentation.
Where you get to the point that you tie in, you would still show the lineage in
the application, but for the documentation you would show as your resource 'DAR
member xxxxx'

Documenation from you to 'DAR member xxxxx' requires:
your: birth cert, marriage
parents: bc, marriage, death
grandparents: bc, marriage, death
....back to 'DAR member xxxxx'.

You have to be able to 'connect the dots' to tie from generation from the next.
In the earlier generations where there may not be bc, or dc, they will accept
wills, pension applications, obituaries, etc.

Ran into a question that I have no idea about. I know that the entire family
used to get their citizenship when the head of family, usually the
husband/father, was granted his citizenship. Does anyone know when it changed? I
am looking at an ancestor and IO find her husband getting his citizenship in
1910 in New York. Would his wife gotten her's then also?

The USCIS (the old Immigration and Naturalization Service' launched a genealogy
section on their website a few years ago.  They might be able to answer the
question, as well as provide some documents for a fee that exist after a certain
point.

Hi- the DAR patriot list is a public site.  The following link will take you to
the page with Connelly on it.  The second one is Capt. Henry Connelly.  If you
click on the right it will take you to the second page which list about 60
people who have joined the DAR under Capt. Henry Connelly.  Some of them show
that they have supporting documention available.  Some show descendancy.

Hope this helps

Contact your local DAR they will have someone to help you with the process.
Don't try to try it on line the fun part of DAR is the other ladies you will

If you're married you may have to submit your marriage license. You need your
birth certificate, the birth and depending on their status, the death
certificates of both parents, then the grandparents of the patriot line (birth
and death) and so on unless you can tie into a relative who has previously
applied via that same line. I had a great-aunt who was a member so I have to
also prove my relationship to her. Right now I have a hiccup on mine because I
didn't have birth and death records for my grandparents, I had used a census. So
before you send in the application, be sure you have those things. I've also
heard some folks say they've had to submit divorce records also. They want to
have a clear line in case you have children or grandchildren that may want to
join later down the road. It doesn't matter if it's a DAR or SAR ... if you can
tie into one or the other as a relative of the applicant, it will be good.
