Peggy, I took your suggestion and went with genealogybank. I have been on the
site for 3 days now and have found nothing. I even put in info I already knew or
had, and nothing. I must be really doing something incorrectly. Do you have any
suggestions? Thanks, Julie

I use genealogybank.com and love it. I found they have more coverage. I tried
both before I decided, and got way more hits on GB.

In all my years of research I have finally come across 2 BHC in a family branch.
From 1857 to 1967 100,000 (mostly) children were emigrated from the UK to
Africa, Australia and Canada (and some moved on to the US), by some 50 sending
agencies.

I am particularily interested in learning about the Catholic Emmigration
Society, Catholic Immigration Society or Catholic Rescue Society and more
importantly where are their records today.

Also interested to know if anyone has experience dealing with Fegan's, and if
there are any records still in Canada.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Thanks for your interest. Aalborg is actually the 4th biggest city in Denmark.
My ancestor, Peter Petersen, was a carriage maker by trade, but in his later
years apparently lived with his wife and youngest child IN the jailhouse...and
he worked as a jailor. I guess it's not necessarily a Euro-centric thing.
Rather, a 19th century concept, that one could take a job as a jailor, and live
at the courthouse for free.

Are you certain they had prisoners in their home and not that they lived at the
jail? There is, of course, a difference. I’ve seen jailors and inmates
listed on census pages in the U.S., and they are not the jailers homes but the
prisons or jails that often have a home for the head jailer/warden.

My ancestors, according to the 1880 Census in Alborg, Denmark, were jailors, and
had several prisoners living with them in their home!

I wonder if this was a common thing? I don't think it would be, but can anyone
shed any light on why Denmark would allow private citizens keep prisoners in
their homes?

What is it that you would like to know about the place? It has a wikipedia page
that might be a nice start for you.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlton_Kings

I’m sure some googling would turn up lots of information about the area. My
grandmother was born less than 50 miles from there.

In what year did you find them in the census? What was the head of
household’s occupation? I ask because these are the clues that can tell you
not just where your ancestor was but sometimes WHY they were there.

The address shows as: New Court House

found Charles or Anne in ANY census. Any information would be helpful, thanks,

Hi Rose and welcome.

First, I would recommend taking your time and looking into one to two people
from each side of the family first. If you do more than that, it can very
easily become overwhelming and confusing. I know this from experience. :-)

For your father, since you know the death date and place of your father I
would start with trying to get his death certificate and/or an obituary this
should at least give you information about his adoptive parents and whether
he was married and any other children he may have had. If he did have
additional children, and you fill comfortable doing it, see if you can
locate them and contact them. However, be prepared because they may not be
aware that you even existed so they might not be too happy to talk to you.
Since I don't have a lot of experience with adoption I can't be of much more
help for that.

As for your mother, since you know that she was born in NJ you could look
for her on census records and you can do this by going to Ancestry.com (fee)
or even familysearch.org (free) this should list where her parents were born
and when they immigrated to the US. Once you get that information then take
a look online for possible boats that they came over on and try to locate
their names on sites such as:
http://www.olivetreegenealogy.com/immigration/index.shtml Once you get that
information you can try to either find information about them on
Ancestry.com (you would need the world membership) find somebody who has a
membership to the World version and pay them to look it up for you or find
forums of genealogists who specialize in Italian ancestry. That is what I
would try.

Hope this helps,

Tracy Collins

Hi, Rose!

I can’t offer you a lot of suggestions for searching for Italian records as I
have no Italian roots.

You might want to write for your father’s SS5 record as that might give you
some insight.

Where in upstate NY are you? I’m in the far West corner of the state.

I have ancestry.com, so if you have some names and dates for your parents, I
could help look a bit to get you started.

My local library also has Heritage Quest. You need a little instruction to get
going but it is great to use.

Hi Rose I've been doing the family search thing since 1978. First never post
anything on the websites like Ancestry.com or PAF, use them for your advantage
by surfing those sites. If I were you I would firt send for my fathers social
security number application, when you get that then send for his death
certificate, then the marriage licence, remember the licence and the marriage
certifate is two different things and sometimes as different information then
his
birth certificate.
There is a lot of good information out there but you have to be careful who put
the information together.

good luck if you need more help e-mail.

My parents were in Ohio, USA (mostly Canton, Starke County but possibly other
cities as well) in the 1940s and did some side show type work for extra income.
I can find lots of circus info sites but not much in regards to carnival shows
like knife thrower (mom on spinning wheel), strong man,
fighting/boxing/wrestling, etc.
I don't know of any other venues that would offer those things, if anyone has
suggestions I'd appreciate the info.
Circuses seem to have been a lot more organized in their history than the
carnys. There are no "employee records" to search.
My best advice thus far is from a circus site that mentioned searching
newspapaers of the circuses that played there and go from there.
I guess I can do that with carny's as well :-)
Feel free to email me if you wish, or post on the board here.
Thanks,
Sunny

Rose another site that might be of help, that I have found lots of family and
hints of places/names to look.  rootsweb.com
Genforum, I found lots of stuff too.
I now work off of ancestry.com and have put my family tree on their website.
Have met several relatives that I didn't know I had.

Good luck on your search, it's sooooooo much fun.

Hi Tammy. As far as I know, there was no John in my family, and they were all

a jailor, and live at the courthouse for free.

You must have seen the 1900 census,
because you give month-of-birth -

And here's Floyd's DoB -
World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
Name: Floyd Burns
County: Oneida
State: New York
Birthplace: Michigan;United States of America
Birth Date: 15 Jan 1888
Race: Caucasian (White)
FHL Roll Number: 1818603
Married, wife + child

For 1880 (at Ancestry.com), I entered the query
ROBERT BURN* born MICHIGAN 1849+/-5
and was surprised to get only one reasonable hit -
*and* he is a Harness Maker! -
(the only other hit was Robert BURNETT b.ca.1845) -

1880 Lyons, Ionia, Michigan
Burns, Alice, 60 widow born PA:PA:PA
Robert, son 31 widower Harness Maker born MI:PA:PA

This one is in the right town, right age -
1870 Lyons, Ionia, Michigan
Burnes, Robert, 22 Butcher born Michigan
(), Esther, 20 born Alabama
NOTE: This is after the civil war - did they meet in wartime?
Or did Esther travel north to Michigan first?

And here's a Robert Burns with a mother Alice -
1860 Lyons, Ionia, MI (all children born MI)
Burns, James W/43:PA/butcher, Alice/42:PA,
(), Margaret A/16, James H/14, Robert/12, Hannah A/9,
