Does anyone know of a memorial stone that shows the names of the ones that
lost their lives during the Blair Mountain war and the Matewan Massacre in
WV?
Matewan Massacre happened in town of Matewan, West Virginia on May 19, 1920.

Battle of Blair mountain was during late August and early September 1921, in
Logan County, Wv

I have been stuck on my great (x3) grandfather for quite some time.
His name is David Sheffiel(d) and he was born in the US about 1790.
His son, Charles (my great great grandfather) was born around 1823
either in the US or Quebec. They eventually ended up in Kent County,
Ontario. My problem is I have no idea where in the US they were from
or where in Quebec Charles may have been born and I have no clue where
to start looking. Any ideas would be extremely helpful.

What I do know:
- David's wife is Mary (b 24 Sept 1796 US? - d 10 Nov 1865 Kent County,
Ontario)
- I'm sure Charles probably had other siblings but I have no record of
them.
- I have tried to find David's will with no luck (I think he died
between 1871 & 1881)

I need help on finding info on someone who legally changed their name?
I am trying to gt Info on My mother in law who was born in tenn on 29 Jul
1936 and died in WV on Nov 28 2006

There is a controversy going on in the family as to what was her real name
lol
Half says it was Bessa\ Bessie May Williams
And other half says it was Bessa Marie Williams

We think she changed her name legally in California Because they lived in
San Bernardino, Ca for several years, not sure if that is the county she
changed it in.
She married Robert Leston Plymale We think in California also
Her parents were Byron T. Williams B.Tenn
And Bessie May Clemmons. B.tenn

She had 2 brothers who are also unaccounted for, John Williams and James
Williams. Donnot know any info on them except it is believed they are in San
Bernardino, Ca. Both boys were born after 1938 in tenn,Arizona or California

Her legal name was Marie W. Williams

Any help I can gt with this would be greatly appreciated.

I have a movie (packed away) here on the incident at Matewan
http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0093509/combined
(The movie was actually filmed in a town in central West Virginia known as
Thurmond. This town is located on the New River. It is about 100 miles from the
real city of Matewan). I don't remember but the movie may have listed names of
casualties.

Two of the men killed in Matewan that day were the brothers of agency owner,
Thomas Felts. In retaliation, Felts had the Matewan police chief, Sid Hatfield,
killed when he was tried in Welch, WV. He walked up the steps to the courthouse
and met five detectives waiting for him at the top. He was filled full of
bullets and then detective Hugh Lucas turned and emptied a gun into the
courthouse wall as though Hatfield had shot at them, then placed the gun in his
hand after detective Charley Lively had shot him behind the ear to make sure he
was dead.

Of the two commemoratives I know of (the plaque and the flood wall) in Matewan I
see no names.

This Dixie Accord interview for a movie may help a little
http://www.wvculture.org/history/labor/matewan03.html I haven't read it all the
way.

If he was born in the US and was in the states during the war of
1812, he may have enlisted. Try the NARA database. Ancestry has a
searchable database that contains enlistees from the late 1700's
through the early 1900's. I think you can e-mail NARA and request a
search in their database and then send for the record. The last one
I ordered was still 37.00.You will want to order the full record.
You never know what will turn up in the paperwork.Good luck. I found
my 4th g-grandfather's birthplace that way after a ten year search.

Dear JoAnn, I found you subject line very interesting so I went searching and
when I realized the fight involved coal miners I became all the more interested
so I Googled
Matewan Massacre/ Battle of Blair Mountain and I found thousands of letters on
the
subject and even a couple of video's on the first page so all the information is
probley
somewhere on the site ,If I didn't have the flu I'd keep looking lot's of
material to cover
on Google, good luck...... grand daughter and great, great granddaughter of many
coal miners from Wales, Durham,England to Philadelphia, USA, to Indiana & Ohio
so the working of the coal mines play a big part in my own family research
(paternal side)
so I wish you luck in your own family root's.

hi all- i am new to the group and would love info about how to find a
the prior name of a person if they've been adopted. my husband's
grandmother was adopted by a family named "rucker" when she was 6 or 7
years old. she suffered from alzhimer's but used to talk about the
adoption alot, and her brother (adopted brother) remembers her joining
the family, but, unfortunately, not the circumstances. this is all that
i have on her--
geneva jenkins (married to henry jenkins)
dob:may 14, 1902
died:nov. 1984
ssn:234-58-5909
she was living in clarksburg, w.va. when she died and i am pretty sure
that she was born in nutter fort or stonewood, w.va. she was a lifelong
resident of w.va. and used to brag that her family had "always been in
the hills of w.va." her adopted brother's name was bill rucker. any
advice would really be appreciated because i have no clue how to
proceed-- julie

No luck that way. Besides I can't really see him enlisting to fight in the War
of 1812 and then move to the land of the "enemy".

Anyway thanks for the help. I'll have to try and figure out something else.

A RootsWeb Louisiana post is looking for info:

Joseph Vollkommer who says he was born in 1869 in
Louisiana. He also says he was born in Mississippi. His father is
Joseph and mother Lena Schmitt. Any ideas as to how I can find out
where he was really born. He came to NY and settled in Brooklyn.

I have 1892 Cenus shows Joseph 23 wife Lena Daughter Lillian age 1 all born US
and he is a Tailor

I have birth certif. for Lillian born Jan 21 1892. Mother Lena Schmidt (also
spelled Schmitt)father Joseph and he is born in Mississippi and is an Ice Man..

Son Joseph is born March 1894 in Brooklyn. Mother Lena born Brooklyn, Father
Joseph born Brooklyn and is a tailor.

1910 census shows Lillian she is born US. Father born in Louisiana, mother in
NY.

1910 census shows same for Joseph. Father is dead.

I also have another Vollkommer but will post that later. These people have me
puzzled. He was not old enough to be in civil war. It is possible he is child
of other Vollkommer's who were in Civil War but I have nothing that shows me if
they had children.

There was a George who came over in early 1840's and I know he had a son Joseph
but he died from woulds. There was also a son George but from what I have he
did not marry until later.

Unfortunately the name is misspelled . Thanks for any help

One the Ancestry search, I typed in Joseph Cunningham, Greene County, Missouri.
It is showing there is some information from 1833, and I can't read what it is.

Joseph CUNNINGHAM of Calloway County Missouri purchased 80 acres. It is
dated 11 Feb 1832, but then says signed 1833. It does describe the land.
They have a copy of the original record, I could not get my computer to copy

I can find him, Mechelle, but you cannot look at the record in ancestry.com,
just the transcription. It just says:

Missouri Census, 1830-70

Name: Joseph Cunningham
State: MO
County: Greene County
Township: No Township Listed-Tax
Year: 1833
Database: MO 1830-1839 Census Index

If you have a birth year or something else to go on, I'd be happy to poke

This is interesting, I know of a man named Dvorak, and if I'm not mistaken he
was from Minnesota or Wisconsin.  Last seen, he was living here in California,
and he is in his early 60's....that not a common name.

That would really be appreciated Dawn, and thank you for looking.
Joseph was born abt. 1786 in PA.  I don't know where he was before settling in
MO.
His wife's name was Elisabeth/Elizabeth Unknown b. abt 1790 NC.  They had a son
William Louis born in 1817, in MO. William married Mary Ann Cook.  I have found
a daughter, Elizabeth C. m. Thomas Scaggs in 1836. A possible daughter is
Mosilla Cunningham, she married Thomas Cawfield in 1833. I can't find Mosilla
and Thomas in the census, but I did find where they lost their farm due to
foreclosure.
They may have had a daughter named Martha, b. abt. 1836-1838.

That's about all I could find, in the last couple of years.
Thanks again,
Mechelle

I've been able to look up. Jerome Brown Melson married (possibly) just prior to
Lewis Jerome Franklin Sanford being born (I'm guessing now) on November 19,
1944.

I know there is quite a lot here to work with but I've hit a road block and any
help will be gratefully accepted.
Thank you,

Not a lot so far, Mechelle, but I did find an 1850 census in Missouri that
might be them. I will email it to you directly. One thing about it is that
there is an M.M. Cunningham living with them, born abt 1834. That somewhat
backs up the theory of the existence of Martha. Might she be a grandchild?
You cannot tell from the 1850 census.

Do you have marriage records for Mosilla and Thomas? I will send you what I
found just in case you don't.

Still looking ....

There is a tree on ancestry.com that looks like this family. It is owned by

That would really be appreciated Dawn, and thank you for looking.
Joseph was born abt. 1786 in PA. I don't know where he was before settling
in MO.
His wife's name was Elisabeth/Elizabeth Unknown b. abt 1790 NC. They had a
son William Louis born in 1817, in MO. William married Mary Ann Cook. I have
found a daughter, Elizabeth C. m. Thomas Scaggs in 1836. A possible daughter
is Mosilla Cunningham, she married Thomas Cawfield in 1833. I can't find
Mosilla and Thomas in the census, but I did find where they lost their farm
due to foreclosure.
They may have had a daughter named Martha, b. abt. 1836-1838.

That's about all I could find, in the last couple of years.
Thanks again,
Mechelle

I can find him, Mechelle, but you cannot look at the record in ancestry.com,
just the transcription. It just says:

Missouri Census, 1830-70
about Joseph Cunningham
Name: Joseph Cunningham
State: MO
County: Greene County
Township: No Township Listed-Tax
Year: 1833
Database: MO 1830-1839 Census Index

If you have a birth year or something else to go on, I'd be happy to poke
around a bit more.

There was a famous composer, Andre Dvorak, who stayed with a family named Bily
in Spillville, Iowa.

This is interesting, I know of a man named Dvorak, and if I'm not mistaken he
was from Minnesota or Wisconsin.  Last seen, he was living here in California,
and he is in his early 60's....that not a common name.

Thank you for all of this good information!  Yes I know of that tree
(HomerGirl), the problem is that all information stops with Joseph and
Elizabeth.  They are in the 1840, 1850, and 1860 census.  The area where they
were, started off as part of Greene Co., then it was split up, and it became
Taney Co., finally in 1859 it was named Christian Co.  They were right there, in
the same spot, only the county name changed.

It's likely that Martha was their granddaughter, and a wild shot would be that
Mosilla was her mother, without benefit of a marriage?  I have followed Martha,
or M.M., she had a child out of wedlock, named Pleasant.  Later Martha married
William Jackson, and is found on the farm near the Cunninghams.

Joseph and Elizabeth, and the details of their children and parents, is what I
can seem to find.

I appreciate any help that I can get,
Mechelle

Is there a certain way you are suppose to search SSDI? I am looking for
Bertha Juanita Reynolds Horn, who died in Cabell county WV in Aug of 1987 or
1989. I know for a fact she died in Cabell county WV, but SSDI dosen't show
her when I do a search. I also tried just searching for Bertha and Juanita
seperately, but all that comes up is a Juanita Horn that died in Harpers
Ferry WV. And that isn't her. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Wow! Thank you Dawn!  It's definitely a challenge.....NO databases/family trees
have anything for Joseph Cunningham, or Elisabeth.
There were other Joseph Cunninghams in PA, but they have led to dead ends.  He
is not Joseph IV... and almost definitely not related to Hugh Cunningham.
Family stories say he was Irish, and one account (that didn't quite fit) stated
that he raised
thoroughbred horse (during the Civil War).   I found the Cunninghams to be
farmers for at least 4 generations, with the exception of one Blacksmith.

A good guess would be that Joseph's father's name was Lewis/Louis, that name
continued to be passed down.  His son's name was William Lewis, b. 1817, Greene
Co. Missouri.
The had one daughter, Elizabeth C., and possibly a daughter Mosilla.

Joseph's wife's name Elisabeth, was spelled with an S, on one of the census'.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Mechelle

you'd search first and last (known) name. If nothing try it with a midle
initial.
Not everyone is listed in the SS death indexes.
What is her birth date? Are you positive of the approx year of death?

Some people aren't listed in the SSDI.  I went to ancestry.com and got this
information from them:

Info about the SSDI from ancestry.com:

The Death Master File (DMF) from the Social Security Administration (SSA)
currently contains over 83 million records. The current update reflects the
latest information provided by the SSA as of January 2009. The file is created
from internal SSA records of deceased persons possessing social security numbers
and whose deaths were reported to the SSA. Often this was done in connection
with filing for death benefits by a family member, an attorney, a mortuary, etc.
Each update of the DMF includes corrections to old data as well as additional
names. [NOTE: If someone is missing from the list, it may be that the benefit
was never requested, an error was made on the form requesting the benefit, or an
error was made when entering the information into the SSDI.]
This file includes the following information on each decedent, if the data is
available to the SSA:

Last name

First name

Social Security Number

State issued

Birth date

Death date

Last residence

Lump sum payment

The absence of a particular person in the SSDI is not proof this person is
alive. Additionally, there is a possibility that incorrect records of death have
been entered on the DMF. The Social Security Administration does not guarantee
the accuracy of the file.
SEARCHING TIPS
When you know the information, be as specific as possible to avoid a large of
hits. (Large can be somewhere over a couple hundred or so.) If you are unable to
find someone you are looking for, here are some things to try:

Change dates around (e.g. instead of searching for 5 Oct 1954 [10/5/54], search
for 10 May 1954 [5/10/54])

Change years around (e.g. 1984 becomes 1948)

Use all other possible spellings of the name (and perhaps some that aren't so
likely)

Switch last name and first name around

Try searching for a middle name as a first name

Even if you know a piece of information, try omitting it (e.g. if you know first
and last name and death date, try leaving off the first name).
