I am a Fraser and would be interested in finding out about this too.  I have
seen a picture of the Fraser tartan, but would be interested in finding out how
to obtain items like kilts,etc.

There are Scottish Highland Games they have a website you can join and
participate.
My husband, more than half Norweigian, doing genealogy, found that he is related
to the McLaine family....Sean Connery's mother was a McLaine (hope I spelled it
right)..making my hubby and Sean very distant cousins....( that still counts,
right? LOL)
Good luck
Try to google a local chapter of Scottish Highland Games...

This is an interesting site.  Thank you very much for sending it to me!  I find
it very interesting that the actual old Fraser clan pin that I have has a
different motto....Je suis prest....inscribed.  I have been told that it's old
and means "I am ready".  I wonder how my Fraser crest pin has a different motto
than the one on this site?  I have other items with the Je Suis Prest motto as
well.
I will definitely look into this site and, again, thank you very much!!

Sorry for the bad post!

Here is what I wanted to post -

I found this at www.findagrave.com -

Severin Hermann -

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?
page=gr&GSln=Herrmann&GSfn=s&GSbyrel=in&GSdyrel=in&GScntry=4&GSob=n&GR
id=9612846&

and when I search Mathias I get these results - there are a few that
look close -

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?
page=gsr&GSln=Herrmann&GSfn=m&GSbyrel=in&GSdyrel=in&GScntry=4&GSob=n&G
Ssr=41&

For Severin I would email the person who created the memorial - she
says in her profile that she has Hermann anscestors.

Hope this helps!

Ewan, I'm a Fraser and I have a very old crest pin that has the Fraser crest
with "Je suis prest" written upon it.  I have othere  newer articles with the
same motto. I know that this is old french and translates to "I am ready".
However, someone recently sent me information that has the Fraser crest with a
motto that is totally different.  Do any of your books have any information on
Fraser motto's?
Most of my ancestors are from Scotland...Fraser, McColl, Crawford,Means and
Bruce are the lines I'm currently researching.

Thanks!

There are Scottish Highland Games they have a website you can join and
participate.
My husband, more than half Norweigian, doing genealogy, found that he is
related to the McLaine family....Sean Connery's mother was a McLaine (hope I
spelled it right)..making my hubby and Sean very distant cousins....( that
still counts, right? LOL)
Good luck
Try to google a local chapter of Scottish Highland Games...

[sorry if this cross posts groups you are in]

I have done several lookups in the past for many of you and enjoy
doing so. So, I wanted to let you know I have just finished compiling
mug shots/Bertillon records (1,236), wanted posters (abt 300),
convict etc (4,728), FBI mentions and other such info to make them
searchable on my PC. I think the prospect of seeing what our black
(and white) sheep ancestors looked like is fun and exciting. I'd love
to know what my dad looked like when he was incarcerated at the Ohio
State Reformatory back in 1917-1920 and that is what got me
interested in collecting this stuff all these years.

I'd like to offer to search these records for anyone who would like.
If so, email me here circa_1948@... with any/all of the
following if you know it:
1- subject's age, full name & any AKAs.
2- what the crime was.
3- where subject was incarcerated (prison & city/state).
4- where the crime happened.if diff from #3.
5- date crime happened.
6- incarceration dates.

Keep it brief at first and if I need more I'll email you and ask.
Thanks,
Sunny

Ewan, I'm a Fraser and I have a very old crest pin that has the Fraser crest
with "Je suis prest" written upon it.  I have othere  newer articles with the
same motto. I know that this is old french and translates to "I am ready".
However, someone recently sent me information that has the Fraser crest with a
motto that is totally different.  Do any of your books have any information on
Fraser motto's?
Most of my ancestors are from Scotland...Fraser, McColl, Crawford,Means and
Bruce are the lines I'm currently researching.

Thanks!

Ewan,   Could you tell me what counties are considered "HIghlands" and which are
"Lowlands".  I have one book with a map but it is not very clear.  The areas I
am interested in would be the Argyll area and around Wigtownshire.

Would love to know more about the following man. This is all I can find.

# Name: Walter Grier Cool
# Sex: M
# Birth: 4 Nov 1802 in Franklin Co., Virginia
# Death: Jan 1863 in southwestern, Virginia
BIOGRAPHY: Walter Grier Cool
Walter Cool, patriarch of the Cool family in Webster County, was born in
Franklin County, VA on 04-Nov-1802. The identity of his parents remain unproven,
although there is documentation that indicates Mary Cool Hosey, daughter of
Conrad Kuhl (born in Germany) is Walter's mother. In 1825 he came to the Right
Fork of Holly River, bought extensive tracts of land on both sides of the river,
and became a gentleman farmer in the best tradition of the Appalachian frontier.
On 01-Sep-1825, he married Hannah Clifton, daughter of Holly River pioneer John
Clifton. They settled on a farm about three miles northwest of present day
Diana. Today, the homestead remains in the hands of Cool family members.
    -----
As the wealthiest citizen on Holly River, Walter Cool was involved in the
political effort to establish Webster County between 1852 and 1860. When the
Virginia Assembly approved the Webster petition in Jan-1860, Walter immediately
became a candidate for high office. In May-1860 he was elected as the first
sheriff of Webster County. When the AmCivWar began a year later, Walter cast his
lot with old Virginia and opposed breakup of the state.
    -----
On 20-May-1862, Walter was arrested in Webster County by a Union patrol lead
by Capt. Moses Hall and charged with being a Confederate partisan. The military
trial of Walter Cool was held in Clarksburg and ended with a sentence of "death
by hanging". Shortly following his trial, Walter wrote letters from his jail
cell to his family. He was moved to a P.O.W. camp -- Camp Chase (Columbus),
Ohio. Walter was part of a prisoner exchange in Vicksburg, Mississippi;
Dec-1862. He died somewhere reportedly around Wytheville, VA while trying to
return home to his family and farm. His final resting place remains unknown.
    -----
In 1999, Walter Cool was recognized by the United Daughters of the
Confederacy for his service as a southern partisan. Walter Cool's military
record has now been approved, and descendants may now join the UDC (United
Daughters of the Confederacy) or the SCV (Sons of Confederate Veterans) once
personal lineage is documented and approved.

Hello,
I also had a great-uncle who was in Mattewan State Prison.  I have the same
problem you have....no one wants to talk about it.
Vincent DeLuca was born in 1892 and I don't know when he passed away.  I can't
find him anywhere in census records.
I would like to know when he passed, and exactly how long he stayed in prison.

Prison records seem to be hard to find.  I'm in Texas now, so getting info from
NY is not easy.

Most prisons and asylums I've needed info on inmates from had records stored

I've received many records from them for the cost of pages printed out for me.

My great-uncle Christopher Hyland spent some thirty years in the NY
State Matteawan State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. No living
member of the family can answer why he was there, and I cannot locate
any records (NY State's lookup is primarily recent prisoners. My G-
Uncle was incarcerated shortly after WWI, and his daughter was able to
get him out in the mid-to-late 1960s.)

He was born in New York City 17 Nov 1896. Parents were Joseph Henery
Hyland and Annie (Keegan)Hyland. He married Mary Waters in New York
City (date unknown)and they had one daughter. He appears on the 1900
and 1910 census records with his parents in Manhattan, and in the 1930
census as an inmate in Matteawan, Beacon, NY. There is a possibility
that he was in Detroit in 1920, but that has not been confirmed.

When his daughter gained his release she moved him down to Florida,
where he died in 1976.

Can someone give me some suggestions?

Hi

Highlands & Lowlands - well that is a good "starter for 10" and one that
could see me lynched<G>.

I think it easier to say Lowlands first then everything else is Highlands &
Islands. Ayrshire; Dumfries & Galloway; Wigtown; Roxburgh & Berwickshire
& the Scottish Borders area ; Edinburgh & Glasgow; Dunbartonshire (the top
part is considered Highlands i.e. around Helensburgh north towards Loch
Lomond).

To make it easier a line south from Glasgow to Edinburgh is roughly Lowland
Scotland - hope that helps.

A good kilt shop is base don Princes Street in Edinburgh (That's the name I
think). Fraser has 2 Mottos - the Lovat branch is "All my hope is in
God" and the other is "Je suis prest" ( I am ready).

Hope I've answered the questions asked - if not please e-mail again.

Cheers

Ewan

   Hello,
I also had a great-uncle who was in Mattewan State Prison.

Most prisons and asylums I've needed info on inmates from had records stored
with those, mainly the historical society.

Hi

I'm still looking for the Croft family.  I have been able to locate my
husband's great grand mother.  She was Elizabeth Croft born about 1865 in
Sydney.  She later married a man named Hercules Smith in 1905.  She died about
1933 in Sydney I believe.  I also found 2 croft families who could be
Elizabeth's parents.  They were William and Harriet Croft or William and Mary
Croft all of Sydney.  That is where I got stuck and don't really know where to
look or how to proceed further.  Hope someone can help.

He was moved to a P.O.W. camp -- Camp Chase (Columbus),
Ohio. Walter was part of a prisoner exchange in Vicksburg, Mississippi;
Dec-1862. He died somewhere reportedly around Wytheville, VA while trying to
return home to his family and farm. His final resting place remains unknown.
   -----
In 1999, Walter Cool was recognized by the United Daughters of the Confederacy
for his service as a southern partisan. Walter Cool's military record has now
been approved, and descendants may now join the UDC (United Daughters of the
Confederacy) or the SCV (Sons of Confederate Veterans) once personal lineage is
documented and approved.

Hi Lilian

I had a similar problem but once I got a copy of the death certificate (in your
case Elizabeth) it gave me the right people as the parents were listed - along
with details such as time in 'the colony', etc.

Good luck

I never heard my dad say a word about his dad or his family.
Recently a friend got me interested in genealogy. I attended a
Conference in the Chicago area recently, I have an Ancestry account,
and I have quickly become addicted to this whole process. My
knowledge of my dad's mom's side, the Sternitske's is pretty complete
back to mid 1800's when Gustav and Augusta came from Pomeranz
Germany. My mom's mom's side goes back to the mid 1800's with family
members by the name of Strey living in Minneapolis, Milwaukee and
Chicago. I understand they came from Sweden. Mom's dad was Egger
from Berne Switzerland in the mid 1800's. I haven't taken the step
to try to research prior to that in Europe. That should be interesting.

My dad's great-grandfather arrived on the Sandusky into Port of NYC
on Aug 5 1851 from Liverpool. He was from Killarney. He was 28 and
arrived with a young wife the same age. They had just escaped the
Great Irish Potato Famine. I sometimes think of the courage these
people must have had, arriving in this country that was on the brink
of Civil War. Henry Lamb had two kids in NYC, moved to Chicago and
had 5 more by the 1860 census. I know nothing of him prior to his
arrival. One recent finding was a Chicago Tribune obituary that we
found at the Newberry Library in Chicago that led me to my dad's
aunts and their families. No one ever knew they existed. One of the
grandsons is alive and well near Chicago.

I am going up to Chicago over Thanksgiving weekend to meet with
relatives in their 90's on all 4 legs of the tree. If you can shed
any light on things I should do in my research or you have knowledge
of any of these families, contact me. I am writing a book which I
intend to publish, mostly for the use of my greater family.

Hi...
I have a prison look up, if you have information for California.
My Grandmother's cousin, Earl Cunningham, was sent to Alcatraz State
Prison for about 5 yrs. The family never talked about the crime he
committed. I'm curious if you can find it.
Earl was born around 1910 in Garrison, Missouri, they came to CA.
around 1936, I think he was sent to prison around 1950. At the time,
he lived in either Watsonville, or San Luis Obispo CA.
As the family story goes there was a women involved, and he
supposedly went to Prison for her. But that could have been glorified.

Just curious,
Mechelle

Hi

I'm still looking for the Croft family.  I have been able to locate my husband's
great grand mother.  She was Elizabeth Croft born about 1865 in Sydney.  She
later married a man named Hercules Smith in 1905.  She died about 1933 in Sydney
I believe.  I also found 2 croft families who could be Elizabeth's parents.
They were William and Harriet Croft or William and Mary Croft all of Sydney.
That is where I got stuck and don't really know where to look or how to proceed
further.  Hope someone can help.

Regards
Lilian

Alcatraz Prison (set in San Francisco Bay) was a Federal Prison for
the worst of the prison inmates. If Earl was sent there, he must have
been convicted of a FEDERAL offense. You might check newspapers for
reports of his trial.

I have a student who is interested on general information on the McDuff Clan of
Scotland.  Granddaddy told him he was related to Robert the Bruce.  At this
point he does not have a name.  He wants to use the information for a report on
the middle ages 1100-1400.

thanks

Shirley Patrick

I, too, am interested in the HERRMANN, HERMAN, HERRMAN, HERMANN surname. My
husband is a HERMAN, but it's been said their surname changed (dropped the
double consonants) when they came to America.

Shirley -

I am in a kilted guard - and there are several of us
in the unit who can trace a connection to Robert the Bruce,
even though we are of different clans.
So - the connection is not limited to McDuff Clan.
(Off the top of my head, I don't remember my own connection.)

For a quick look at the internet, I would use Google with a query
GENEALOGY "ROBERT THE BRUCE"
http://www.google.com/search?q=GENEALOGY+%22ROBERT+THE+BRUCE%22
and of immediate interest on Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_the_Bruce
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genealogy_of_the_British_Royal_Family
