How could 2 brothers disappear for 30 years?
I have both my grandfather and my great uncle on the 1900 census.
After that nothing, till 1930, when my grandfather--James Daniel
Stringer & his brother show up. And my grandfather is married to my
grandmother Mable Chasteen, and living in California.
My grandfather & his brother were from Texas, my grandmother was from
Missouri.
Any advice??
Thank You

Several possibilities: their names were misspelled or mis-transcribed
in the census. Or they were moving around for work and weren't counted.
I found them in the WWI draft registration - on June 17, 1917, they
were farmers near Pavala, Fisher County, TX. James listed only
himself as dependant; Herbert listed his grandmother. Not sure why
they don't show up in the 1910 census, but I didn't look under
grandmother's name (probably the one shown in 1900 census).

Have you looked for Mable Chasteen to see how many censuses she was
in under her maiden name to narrow down the time of their
marriage? Or maybe both families moved to CA where the marriage took place.

Good luck.
Barbara

OK - that adds 1910 and 1917 to dates that you *know*;
leaving just the 1920 census missing.
(I didn't find them on a "quick look").
Since the two boys look like they were "working the farm"

(presumably before 1930).

Hi
I am sorry that I did not get back to you sooner.
This past Monday, my grandmother passed away.
She was 92 years old.
But more than that she was a great great great grandmother!!!
It has been hard, but I know she is at peace now.
Thank you Tom!
I did search the 1920 census and found nothing!
Yes, James Daniel Stringer's brother was Herbert.
I am also having a "VERY HARD" time with thier mother-
Mary Elizabeth Daniel-Stringer!
Their grandmother is shown spelling her last name with either Blanchard, or
Blancette.
These 4 people are my mystery people.
I cannot move in the direction of my great great grandmother's side.
Ann Elizabeth Whatley-Daniel- Blancette/Blanchard
born in 1832 Alabama.
Thanks again for helping me!!

Yes I have that census also.
I have a 1910 showing my grandfather james living with his
grandmother & his brother.
His grandmother's name was
Anne.Elizabeth "Whatley" born 1835 Alabama
Married William Henry Daniel born 1825 NC yet died in Alabama
I can find 2 of their children.
James Warren Daniel born 1859
Mary Elizabeth Daniel

I cannot find anything with any of them together. Not even the 1860
census, which is before Mary was born!
Nor can I find Anne. on any census for Alabama, or any for that
matter, before she was married.

Nor can I find anything under marriage for Mary!
Yet she married someone named Stringer.
Now do I not have a mystery on my hands...LOL
Thanks for helping me, it means alot.

John was born 18 February 1866 or 1868 in Stockholm, Sweden. Bretta
Lena (who was also called Betty) was 7 August 1872 in Gutenberg,
Sweden. He died in 1914 - 1915 inb Bonesteel, SD and she died 20
June 1962 in Phoenix, AZ. The family legend is that they changed
their name from Carlson when they arrived in the US, and then one son
changed it back to Carlson, but I have never found any reference to

I found them in the 1900 census in Chicago and in the 1910 census in
Gaughen, Gregory Co, SD. I did notice their infant son born in 1899
isn't with them in SD, so must have died. In the 1930 census I found
Betty in Chicago with oldest child Arthur (in US Army) and another
small child Amy 7 (but not Horton with them in SD). I take it you
have this info; if not I'll email you direct with the census pages as
an attachment, if you say that's okay. The 1900 census shows month
and year of birth; John: April 1867, Betty May 1872. Both immigrated
1892, married 1895.

Ancestry: South Dakota Death Index 1905-1955 shows a John E.
Bergsten, Gregory County, died 15 March 1915.

I went to the 1900 Census, to Chicago, Cook County, and searched on
Bergsten; I found several males in the same ward as John who could be
his brother - my thinking was that he might have gone to Chicago vs
staying close to the port city he arrived in because he had family in
Chicago. Names: Sam, Axel, Oscar.

You might try going to the Mormon site, familysearch.org, which is
free, and looking there too.

If you don't have access to ancestry and would like more info from
above, please let me know.

Hello everyone and thank you for allowing me to join this group. I
have been researching my paternal roots for several years now but keep
going in circles and hitting roadblocks. I am very hopeful of learning
more avenues of research with this group.

The surnames I'm researching are Bass, Horowitz and Shore.

William Bass (born 9/13/1911) is my paternal grandfather. His parents
were named Joseph Bass and Mary (I do not know her maiden name). I
know William was born in Chicago, Ill. but moved and was raised in PA.
He died in March of 1964 and is buried I think, in Montauk, Long
Island, NY.

Sarah and Jacob Horowitz are the main ones I have been researching.
They are my paternal great-grandparents on my dad's mother's side.
This is where I get the most confused and the most roadblocks as there
seem to be a lot of discrepancies in dates.

Sarah's maiden name was Shore and she was born in Russia. (B.-July 4,
1893 or 94. D.-May 4, 1974) I recently found out (but have no proof)
that she was born in Kiev, Russia. She came to America as a child
around age 10 with her grandparents instead of her parents (from what
I'm told, but again no proof). In the 1920 Census record it said she
came here in 1908, but in the 1930 Census record it said she came here
in 1912. I'm not sure why the difference.

The same went for Jacob. (B.-May 15, 1888, D.-Jan. 13, 1955) In 1920
it said he came here in 1908, but in the 1930 it showed he came here
in 1910. Both records show they were Naturalized though, but I
haven't found anything on that either. Jacob died in a hospital in
Richmond, Virginia but I haven't been able to obtain a copy of the
death certificate yet.

In 1920 they lived in New Haven, Connecticut, New Haven County, and in
1930 they lived in New Hanover County, NC. I did find their graves as
they are both buried in Wilmington, NC.
Any help and guidance is greatly appreciated.
Thanks again for letting me be a part of your group.

Through a historical research group I've learned that the The Times
in the UK has put their entire archive online, from 1785 to
1985. Each paper in its entirety! And you can search. I entered
George Washington and got over 23,000 hits. It includes births,
marriages, deaths, and of course such major events as the beheading
of Marie Antoinette. So if you have English ancestors, you might
search there. Or just get lost in history. You do need to register,
but it's free, at least for now.

Bergsten, Johan E.: Did you locate his homestead information on the
government land records website:

On the documents tab you can download a free pdf file of the homestead
patent award.

For other researchers with ancestors who had homesteads the website is
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/PatentSearch/

Using the Standards tab you can search by state, county, township and
range and find the names of neighbors who may have descendants who married
into your family.

Hi, I'm new here. I have just started looking for my family and wondered if
anyone else is
searching for these surnames. All are from the old Austria-Hungary and most are
Slovak
or, in two cases, Polish. My grandparents and great-grandparents arrived pre-WWI
and
settled mainly in Southwestern Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. Some of their
children moved
to Chicago and others to Ohio, but not till the 1920s, I think. Here are the
names I'm
looking for.

GLOZIK (Slovakia, village of Dobra Niva)

NOVAK (Polish)

HANZEL or HANSEL (Slovakia, village of Dobra Niva)

KONESKY (Polish)

PAVLINI (Slovakia)

Thanks,

Can anyone help me figure out what the designation "JNO" means?

I am researching the ships' registries from Ancestry.com, looking for
my ggrandfather Joseph Hyland's arrival in New York City, somewhere
between 1883 and 1885. My sort is the last name, and when I get to
the 'Js', after James, Jessie, Jenkins, etc there are a whole list of
JNO as a first name.

I'm stumped. Anyone have any ideas??

My great-uncle Christopher Hyland spent some thirty years in the NY
State Matteawan State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. No living
member of the family can answer why he was there, and I cannot locate
any records (NY State's lookup is primarily recent prisoners. My G-
Uncle was incarcerated shortly after WWI, and his daughter was able to
get him out in the mid-to-late 1960s.)

He was born in New York City 17 Nov 1896. Parents were Joseph Henery
Hyland and Annie (Keegan)Hyland. He married Mary Waters in New York
City (date unknown)and they had one daughter. He appears on the 1900
and 1910 census records with his parents in Manhattan, and in the 1930
census as an inmate in Matteawan, Beacon, NY. There is a possibility
that he was in Detroit in 1920, but that has not been confirmed.

When his daughter gained his release she moved him down to Florida,
where he died in 1976.

Can someone give me some suggestions?

Hello all! I am new to your forum, and I welcome the opportunity to get
help with some of my research issues (or to offer help: I've been at
this for a bit over a year now.)

My project right now is Mom's lineage. I had to speed things up this
week, because she was diagnosed with lymphoma just a week ago.

All four of her grandparents emigrated from Ireland to New York City in
the 1880s. One of them, the Keegan line, I have located in Ballymahon,
Longford, Ireland. I have been completely unable to locate any of the
other three.

The families I am seeking are those of the following individuals:
Joseph Henery Hyland , b Nov 1863 in Ireland
John McCormick, b Oct 1865 in "Irish Free State"
Mary Hartford, b May 1868 in "Irish Free State"

I have numerous New York City census records, and possibly emigration
records. I have death certificates on order. What I don't have is where
in Ireland these folks came from.

If anyone can make a connection with any of these three individuals, I
would be very grateful. Right now, I am spinning my wheels, and I
done't really have time for that.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Thanks -
GenealSue
