Does anyone know of a web site that will allow just

Hi everybody, I need help with this one. My ggrandfather's name was Albert John
Fisher, that is here in America. He was born June 01, 1882 in Hradek, Plzen,
Czechoslovakia. His name spelled there was Adelbertus Tyser/Tiser. I have
information from the time he came to the USA but would like to find anyone from
where he grew up. His father was Norbert and mother was Barbora Tomaskova. I was
named after her. He had a brother who came to the USA, Martin Tyser. The last
name change was when Albert was at Ellis Island. He didn't speak English, they
didn't hear Czech, so he ended up with Fisher. He came to the USA in June 1903
but I can't find him in the listing from Ellis Island. Seems that he worked on
the ship going back and forth across the "pond" and one time got into trouble at
home. His mom said go to America and when he got here he went into town,New York
City, and when he went back to the ship it was gone, so he just stayed. I have
no information about ship names. He did
receive his citizen papers July 5, 1921. That is what I have. Whatever help is
out there I'll be thankful for, no rush on time, I've waited this long. Thanks,
Barb

Webroots has such lists. Search for your surname(s). If found, join that list.
If not, start one for your surname(s). Good luck.

Hi All

I recently had to give up my subscription to Ancestry due to financial
problems and unfortunately am having problems downloading the free
stuff too.

I see they've added the Return of Owners of Land in Ireland 1876 and
know there are 3 entries for Fitzroy (2 in Antrim and 1 in Galway).

Could anyone possibly (Please) download these for me and post or email
to me.

Thanks in advance!!

Does this look like the right families?
And for surname RYAN - think phonetically -

1930 Wellsburg, Brooke, WV (all are marked as born WV:WV:WV)

I know there are several websites online for the origins of last
names, but does anyone know of any good websites for the origins of
first names? I know some websites provide the meaning of the name.
The only reason I'm asking is we have my great grandfathers parents
first name and are assuming the last name is the same, which is from
the Ukraine/Russia, but they're first names I think may sound a little
more Polish

Thanks, Suzanne

Hi Suzanne!

I wish you hadn't brought the subject up. I googled your question and of
course had to check out my name and found the origin was Old French. I
despise the French (My German and English heritage combined I guess). Anyway
here is the link to the Google Search page I found. I hope you enjoy
yourself.

Suzanne,

   You might try going to:
   http://www.polishroots.org/surnames/surnames_index.htm

Author William Fred Hoffman has written a wonderful book that might interest
you.

He would be able to give you some direction, possibly!

Thanks to Suzanne's question, and Forrest's reply; I have finally found the
origin and meaning of my father's and grandfather's given name, and the middle
name I gave my son (Costa) which has driven me to distraction for years. It is
of Greek origin and means firm or constant.

Perhaps a strange name chosen by a French/German bloodline; but hey, I finally
know it is truly a given name and someone didn't just make it up!

Thanks,
Karen

Hi everybody, I have a 3 part question;

1- John M Sandifer was born 1841 and died 1880. He is buried in Freedom
Cemetery. Where it the cemetery?

2- I can his wife Martha A Fox-Sandifer in the census but not John, where was
he?

3- John was in the 4Th Kentucky Infantry, Company B. Where can I find
information and the list of soldiers?

I found the 1890 Special Schedule with the list of Survivors and Widows for
Pulaski, the only list not burned in the 1921 fire. At first he was said to have
run off with another but I'm not sure. John is my grandfather's grandfather, I
would like to find more on this rascal. I have been looking for him for a
loooooong time.

Thanks to anyone who can help with this puzzle, Thanks, Barb

I find 8 Freedom Cemeteries listed in KY on FindaGrave.com. You might try doing
a name search on these counties shown there. Not all names are listed, but it is
a start. Where is she in the census? Try there first..No Freedom Cemetery listed
for Casey Co. It could be adjoining Co or the one they were in last before he
died.

I found only one listing for John M. Sandifer. John M. Sandifer & Martha Fox
married 9 Oct 1859 in Casey Co. Ky. This was listed on Ancestry.

I'm a new member of this group and would like to introduce myself. My
name is Steve Everett and I reside in the small town of Chepachet in
the state of Rhode Island. I am 54 years of age.

A short time ago I became interested in my family's past.
Unfortunately, the older generation has passed on. Even when they were
alive they were reticent about talking of family history.

I was fortunate enough to find a site where I could access death
records (for free) so I have some starting information. There is also
some family papers and photos that I'm currently trying to put
together and make some sense out of.

I was happy to find the "links" section of this group and am slowly
working my way through them. I'd like to thank all the members for
their contributions.

Right now I'm simply putting together random facts without much
direction. Any advice anyone would like to offer about how to
structure my search would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,
Steve Everett

Steve,
One thing thatI do is start with a page the top is
labeled "legend" the middle of the page is labeled
"fact". Then I put down every thing I can remember
about family tales or things I remember the older
relatives talking about (sometimes may take more than
one page). Now you start by proving or disproving the
"legend". Always thought my grandfather came first to
Montreal because of family tales. I was amazed to find
him at Ellis Island where he arrived in 1908 before
traveling on to Montreal to meet his brother.

Hi, Steven. Welcome to the list.

I would suggest that your start w/getting a copy of both your mother and
your father's death certificates. Then their wedding certificate. Then
their birth certificates. Meanwhile collect stories from others about your
parents. Write down your memories of them. Collect any photos of them (be
sure to indicate on the back everyone in the picture). If you have brothers
and sisters be sure to include them and their birthdates and marriages.
Don't forget the whens and wheres as well as the dates for any information
you collect - and the source. It can be interesting to take pictures of the
various homes your parents may have owned for lived in and the addresses.

Then start w/your four grandparents: death, marriage, birth, children,
stories, pictures, homes, etc. Eventually, you will run out of birth, death
and marriage records from civil sources and have to resort to cemetery,
church and census records. But the above will get you started.

First thing u need to do is get some type of system for your
information. You can go to the LDS site
http://www.lds.org/portal/site/LDSOrg and u can get a free download
of a PAF. Just click on Family History and then go to the bottom
where it says Free Family History Software. There are also others
that u can buy like Family Tree Maker but if u start out with the
free one u can always transfer the info to one that u buy at a later
date.

And most of all document all your sources...whether it be who told u
the information, what book or website it came from or anything.
Many of us have started out just using the info and not documenting
it then its hard to go back and redocument............KIM

Steve:

One of the things you might look at is working one side of each family at a
time and trying to get whatever information on that family as you can and
put it together. Otherwise, you will get overwhelmed. Also, it would be nice if
you have any other family members (cousins, brothers, sisters) who might be
interested in helping you. It makes it easier and more fun if you have someone
  to work with.

Good luck and happy hunting.
