Hi everyone.

I wanted to post a thank you to sweetlelani99 for provided some new
web pages for the library. She created some great pages for the
state pages.

I want to encourage everyone that has web pages they would like
added to the library to let us know the URL's. One of us will be
sure to get the links in right away.

If you don't know how to do web pages, I am considering newbie web
page classes again. Very very basic HTML coding. Last time I
posted this, I only got 1 or 2 responses. If I get enough interest,
I may go ahead and start them, so let me know!!!

If someone else wants to assist in teaching a class, that is more
than welcome as well.....

A follow up to my checking below....

Mom's computer did not have a virus on it. It is possible someone
with who had been to a page with mom and texas's emails on it has a
virus. Viruses can go through a person's history and/or cached
information and pick addresses from it. They can then forge the
from address based on one of those.

thanks

GCF Members. I had a difficult decision to approve this post as it really does
not seem to provide any useful genealogy information. I took the 'poll' it
asked me to rate a couple of music genres then took me to the obitlinkspage.
There is no offer of providing feedback on the poll or how music ties in to
genealogy.

In my opinion, this is mere advertising to drive traffic to the site.

In the interest of being fair, I am going to approve the message anyway so
people can use the links to the obitcentral.

I would be interested in a discussion on what kinds of posts should/should not
be allowed on the group board. Typically it is to share information about
genealogy related subjects, our group members successes and frustrations. I
don't believe we should allow repeated advertising of a person's web site,
especially under the guise of a 'poll'.

Let me know what you think either on the message board or by email at
kent.smith@... This is also a topic we can cover on our Wednesday night
chats.

Thanks!

Hi all,
I overheard a conversation in Clayton library (Houston) where one
lady researcher told another lady researcher that she never listened
to music any longer. This alarmed me since I know the power of
music in a person's life. Out of curiosity, I created a poll that you
are invited to participate in. I'd like to know what genealogists
listen to.

http://www.obitlinkspage.com/poll/survey.php?s_id=1

Rate your music tastes on a scale of 1-5, 5 being the highest.
Thanks for your help!

Donna,

Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you...it has been a hectic couple of
weeks, with my starting a new job and going out of town.

I am still working on my Lake line. I dont' know from where or when they
arrived in the Lafayette, Tippecanoe County area of Indiana. I know there were
there in the mid-1800's (w/o looking in my notes) and are still there today.
Currently, I am working with the following:

Alvin N. Lake (1930 - 2001) - my father (one of 11 children)
Elbert Leonard Lake (1898-1953) - my grandfather (sibs are Goldie and Forest)
William E Lake (1870-1933) who married Lear Thomas (1877 - 1960) - my great
grandparents
James Lake & Mary Trult (might be my great, great grandparents)

I don't know if there are any connections or not. Let me know.

Carol,
Unless you see something in the new FTM progran there is no real need to upgrade
evertime a new one comes out. I started with V3.1 and think they up to V11. I
went from V3.1 to V5 then V6 (which if my memory serves had a bug in it that
took me a while to get the fitix so it wise to wait a while before moving up and
let them work the bugs out before you have to deal with it) then went to V9
because liked to idea of the Fan Style Tree and also the fact you could do a
tree on ALL folks not just ancestors and descendents of one person. Only reason
upgraded when did is they added something to the main program that I liked and
figured was something needed to have.
As long as you can convert to GEDCOMs and use them you will be able to pass
information on or get it. As this is the basic form all Family Trees uses as a
common denominator program.

Also if you do upgrade contact Borderbond on line for just the upgrade and skip
getting the junk they try to put in that is outdated the day they mail it to
you; or you can find it on line for free where they probably got it in the first
place.. Like state archives on line that have sites up.. NC VA SC to name a
few that are maintained by the States for free.

Hi Carol,

I have used Family Origins as my primary genealogy program because is it
very easy to use, has a more features and data fields, than Family Tree
Maker. Parson's Technology stopped upgrading the program with version 9.0,
so when I heard about the RootsMagic program I got it and it is very like
Family Origins with more user friend features and just as easy to use.
You can create a variety of tree formats, reports, websites, books with
source, notes, etc. included and more.

You can download and use a Free Demo Version at http://www.rootsmagic.com.

Another user friendly genealogy program you can download is this FREE Family
Tree Software:
http://service.bfast.com/bfast/click?bfmid=5647408&siteid=38241613&bfpage=family\
_tree_software

All total, I have seven different genealogy programs so that when I share my
data with other researchers, I can create the GEDCOM that will work best
with their genealogy program. Example: Family Origins has about 12 more
data fields than Family Tree Maker. If you were to download a Family
Origins GEDCOM into Family Tree Maker, you would lose a lot of data and the
fields would not match up.

There use to be several a real good user friendly genealogy programs
available until a couple years ago when The Learning Company merged with the
software publishing companies that produced the genealogy programs, in order
to eliminate the Family Tree Maker competition. TLC was successful and
there are four less real user friendly genealogy programs available.

Hello folks.

I am removing ALL the recent posts about the chat room before things
get out of hand.

There is a regularly schedule chat on Wednesday evenings, at 8:00 PM
central. EVERYONE is invited to attend.

If that time does not work for you, you may set up another scheduled
chat time on the Calendar. It can be anytime that works for you,
mornings, afternoons, evenings. Whatever you want.

Messages that are rude, disrespectul, flaming or of poor taste will
not be tolerated. These types of posts will be deleted immediately
and the posters flagged so that all of their messages must be
approved by a moderator.

Flame wars are easy to start and tough to control once they get out
of hand. We are all adults here and need to control our reactions
especially when they lead to unnecessary and inappropriate responses.

This is a GENEALOGY chat group folks. Lets keep the messages and
chatter around GENEALOGY related topics.

Thanks!

Hi One more country heard from. I also use Family Tree Maker. as
background, I stasrted tracingt my family tree as a teen ager about 1950. I
did most of my research before 1970.
In 1997 I finally bought a computer. I bought Family Tree Maker at Walmart.
I spent 3 years inputing my collected data. I did buy many of the discs as
offfered. Most were copies of sources I had already found in libraries. I
did try the world family tree discs 1 to 21. I am retired on limited
income. I started with version 4.0 and upgraded to 6.0 They offer new
versions / uprgrades almost monthly it seems. I have notr been able to
upgrade so have stuck with the old version. On line I have found lots of
useful helps, mailing lists like this one, using Cyndi's List to locate
them. I created a website which is really only my index to families
covered. I have added links to other useful sites, and joined sevral web
rings, leading to more useful sites.
Each family is different, so each researcher has a differnt problem, but my
suggestion is look for help in the local areas of the country mentioned in
your research. Look up the surnames, and do not forget the women-- follow
all maternal lines as leads. Sometimes even inlaws not in your line will
have someone researching that family with clues you can use.
Good luck JOHN C VAN BUSKIRK

Thank you for all of the great information. Wayne's point is well
taken that as long as you have a .ged conversion, you will always be
able to view and share. I am using version 9 of Family Tree Maker.
I have to upgrade because I got a new computer and it's not working
so well with windows XP. I am trying for free Master Genealogist,
because it's been ratee highly, but it is a little too complicated
for me, and it costs about $80.00. My GEDCOM file of my family from
Family Tree Maker was immediately transferable into the program,
which again means that I am not wasting my time imputing information
and it's not critical what program I choose. I am not happy with the
source citation in FTM, you have to look for a little "s" next to
dates and such. Also a little "a" sometimes appears and I don't know
what it means.

I would like to start scanning photos and attaching them as well, and
I am wondering if this is worthwhile or not. Also I am attaching
census documents in the source section and I am wondering if that is
worthwhile or just for my benefit.

Anyway thanks again for all of the thoughtful responses.

Carol

Currently running V9 with Windows XP and so far have not run into any problems
with it. Think the only one had any trouble with was V5 or V6 as it missied a
program needed to run it but on contacting FTM they were able to send me to
fixit for the thing.

Also the small 'a' besides a person means there is an 'alternate' person with
the same name and basic information that hasn't been counted as a single
individual but could be one person. It works when you have a name like JOHN of
Wayne NC born 1755-1760 will made 1793 recorded SC 1803 that can't fix with a
father so have put them in under two sets of parents or in my case can't decide
if he an uncle to Jacob Harrell (will 1787 SC) or his brother (thus brother to
Francis (will 1759/1763)) so have him listed as both. Since both carry the same
name and birth information FTM will ask if you want to merge them. If you do
merge them then the little 'a' will show since you had them under two parents
and haven't made one the only parent; as only the information around them will
be merged not the two parents. Anyway it means there is more than one of the
probably same person in your files. I've got several common names both male
like that as the HARRELLs tended to limit naming children from a common list of
first names and liked Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth as their daughters or wives.

G1A) Francis Harrell born about 1700 (will 1759f 1763p) G1B) John Harrell (will
1793m 1803r)
G2A1) Jacob Harrell born about 1734 (will 1787fp) G2A2) John Harrell (will 1793m
1803r) aslo John had a son in his will named John...

to you Linda, there is much to find right here on this site,
try the library, and even tho it shows over 6000 messages,
many have been deleted that have no relevant genealogy
information. There is much to be found here if you want
to take the time and if possible get into the Wed. nite chat
people will be there who can help you, give you hints, and
possibly direct you to places you can find your families

Just joined this group. Have brick walls on the 3 branches above--got back to:

   Moore, Averett
     b 1788 (believe VA) d November 18, 1842 (Linn County, MO)
Switzer (or Swisher or Schweitzer), Stephen
     b 1815, VA d IA --was 80 on 1895 census
   Coleman, George b
     b 1820-1822, PA d bet 1860 & 1870 (Shelby County, MO)

Can't find parents or siblings on any of these individuals. I have some strong
guesses for Stephen Switzer but nothing I can prove. On the others, I'm totall
lost. Moore & Switzer was on mother's side; Coleman on father's.

Also searching Mentzel immigrated to Mecan, WI on husband's side.

Martha

to you Martha, have a good look all over this site, there is a
good library, we have a 'brick wall' section, and even tho it shows
over 6000 messages, perusing at least some of them(lots have been
deleted for non genealogy content)you might be surprised at what you
find. And, try to come to the chat on Wed. at 7 central, there will
be people there who can further help you

Martha,

Moore, Averett
     b 1788 (believe VA) d November 18, 1842 (Linn County, MO)Switzer (or Swisher
or Schweitzer), Stephen
     b 1815, VA d IA --was 80 on 1895 census
Coleman, George b
     b 1820-1822, PA d bet 1860 & 1870 (Shelby County, MO)

Try looking for a Coleman and Averett relation here as it could be possible.
Robert Coleman and Henry Averet(t) were both assigned to the SC Militia from
Upper Craven County SC with duty at Cheraw Hill area of Mecklinburg NC probably
as early as 1766 up to end of American Revolution as the records seen lack
specific dates but event in this area from the start of the Regulator Rebellion
in NC in 1766 and the the final battle to stop it in 1771 and afterward saw
miltitia from both Carolinas assigned in the former troubled areas to keep the
peace. This would put them entering the area from 1771 and there up to American
Revolution and several there during the American Revolution. There are a number
of Moore also serving with them that show up on petitions and other records so
possible an Averet married into a Moore and the resulting name of Moore Averet
came into to place as have seen names revered due to time and how people read
them less a COMA between say Moore Averet or Averet Moore. Seen this often with
names like Henry Lewis or Thomas James as due to the missing COMA they show up
Lewis Henry and James Thomas... Now Robert Coleman Henry Averet are not often
comfused but possible to reverse these and come up with Coleman Robert(s) and
Averet Henry... Best way to clear up possible reverse name errors is to look
for them either way and see which ones come up most often in a given area with
the same common folks.
The areas in South Carolina to look would today be Darlington and Marion areas
as these were early districts in Craven County SC which is no longer an active
SC county but still is in NC.

Has anyone ever considered changing what night the chat is on? I
usually don't get home until 8:30 to 9 p.m. and I have to get the kids
to bed first so that leaves no opportunity for me.

We can certainly set up other nights for chat that fit people's
schedules. When would work for you?
