Thank you. I had finally decided to just upgrade my FTM software to the v16,
but now I can't find it to be bought. Ancestory store doesn't even carry it any
more. I did find a 2006 version that I was considering, so I'll tell DH to go
ahead and order it.

Thanks again,
Lana

I believe the Yarby mentioned was in South Carolina. My ancestors were in the
Revolutionary War, and marched from Virginia to South Carolina. In fact I have
seen several different spellings of that name including the one you mentioned.

Anita,

Sure wish I lived near there. It would be a pleasure to hear your presentation.

I went to Amazon and 'looked' at your book. Looks like an amazing and
painstaking work. In the Index, I noticed a Capt. Yarby. Sometimes my
Yarbrough relatives were misspelled as "Yarby" (and all other sorts of
spellings). Any chance this Capt Yarby could be from Yarbrough's in North/South
Carolina?

Thanks,

Anny

If anyone is in the San Francisco Bay Area, drop by the Hayward Library (835 C
Street), on Wednesday December 2, 2009. I have a scheduled Presentation of my
book, Pieces of the Quilt: The Mosaic of An African American Family. The book is
a culmination of over twenty years of work on my family lines. The book includes
chapters on Native Americans, and the use of DNA in Genealogy. There is also a
glossary of terms. It is available through Amazon.com. The event will take place
from 6:00 - 7:30 pm, and is free to the public. I will sign books after the
presentation.

House, I love that show! I have a Davis line in my tree that was originally
Duncan according to my late Grandfather and other family members. I've also used
FTM for years, but have upgraded periodically. James F. Duncan is the one who
changed his surname. Ring any bells? Maybe? Texas is where he ended up. Father

Hi JIm,

As it happens, I also have a Riley in my family tree ... My Dad's mother's
mother's maiden name was Riley.  They lived in Missouri.  Her name was Sarah
Riley as far as I've been able to gleen.  Not sure what the names of her
parents might have been, but her father was born in Ireland according to the
census record I found.  I'm on Facebook and would welcome you as a friend.

Does anyone know anything about the U.S. Victoria a steamship that brought
Immigrants to New York from Ireland? My great-great grandfather may have been on
it and can't find much information about it. His name was Cornelius Rahilly
(Riley), and he left from the Port of Corkon the 15th of June, 1847. Arrived in
Bufalo, N.Y. in September, 1847.

That remains the persistent question.  Arthur was based out of Argentine, KS,
and did a brief stint in WA where my grandfather was born.  But I cannot say
definitively which RR he worked for.  So much would be answered, I believe, if
I had that knowledge.

To answer your question regarding death certificates you'll have to find that
out about the region in question.  I know, for instance, that Kansas didn't
start issuing death certificates until 1910, about five years after
my great-Grandfather died.  Talk about frustration.  Nobody can tell me how
he died and my mother who suffers from Alzheimer's just recently suggested he
was killed on the job -- he was my father's paternal grandfather (and Mom used
to talk to her father-in-law regarding genealogy all the time which would be
why she might know what killed Arthur) however, she never mentioned the reason
until recently and because of her illness the information is now suspect in my
mind.  (Arthur was a Section Foreman for the RR and Mom said he was hit by a
train, too brutal to even contemplate, if you ask me, he was only in his
forties) But I cannot find an obit or even a Death Certificate to confirm the
cause of Death, so I'm hosed, as it
were.  Nobody left alive who can say with authority, to my chagrin.

I'd like to enlarge on what April said. Keeping track of all the
cousins can be extremely helpful. When you can't find a
great-grandmother's name, for example, you may be able research a
sibling of your grandparent whose mother's name may appear on a
birth/baptism, marriage, death record, or a naturalization or other
document such as US Social Security Applications.

I also use Family Tree Maker. It allows you to do charts both
descending from a common ancestor (where all those cousins can be
included) and going back through only one person's line. I'm sure most
of the other family tree software programs also do that.

Are any of the paid genealogy archives stites good?  Or can I find the same info
through the internet?   Also, were there death certificates issued in 1822?

Thanks,
Donna

Hi Donna and welcome to the group and the wondrous world of genealogy!
I use the Family Tree Maker program.  It has family pages where I list the
names of any and all children of a couple.  This is a good way of keeping
track.  While you don't really need the names of siblings it can help when you
come across a person in a census record or other such official paperwork who
shares the name of one of your ancestors.  By having names of siblings you can
better discern which "John Smith" is yours, for instance.

I am new to this group. I have just started doing research info on my family. I
have alot of notes that my mother wrote but I am having trouble trying to decide
what kinds of forms to use. Are there any for all the cousins names?

Hi,

Thanks to everyone that replied to my inital message, I'm going to have
a look through and will let you all know what success I have.

Incidently, another tactic I've tried is Facebook, by searching for
surnames in my family tree, I've been able to send messages to Facebook
users to see if there is any connection to anyone in my family, of
course, it's best to be guarded about what information you give out, but
I've had a couple of interesting responces already

Hi Josh,  I find that when I'm at a road block in my own genealogy I try
helping someone else.  Its fun to see or hear their expressions when one of
their ancestors are found.  I'm currently working on three family genealogies
at the present.  Good lock and if I find anything I'll let you know.  Have you
checked to see if someone has already created a tree with one of your ancestors
names?  Later, Annie

Hey its been a while since I've posted here. I've recently got back into
researching my genealogy for the time being until I get bored with it. Anyway I
wanted to say to Gale in the spam thread but I'm posting it here since I was
gonna post anyway. Anyway there is a way to set up the user group where you can
either approve new members, along with approve messages, and also have a captcha
thing set up where a live person will have to type in a series of letters or
numbers to post or join the group.

Josh

I've heard footnote.com is working on this. But, I don't think it is
complete yet.

Another possibility might be worldvitalrecords.com.

Ancestry has draft registration and a few other "summary" type records
for these.
