The Gainesville Commission on the Status of Women, Inc. (GCOSW) was established in 1980 in Gainesville, Florida to be an advisory board and advocate on behalf of women in the community. In 1994, the Commission reorganized as a nonprofit organization, its mission being "To seek for every woman and girl dignity and opportunities equal to her potential, respecting diversity in ability, race, color, sexual orientation, creed and age.
