By special request, I'm announcing that Sybil's Garage #7 has officially gone on
sale today. I love this magazine! It's so quirky, eclectic, spans the range of
the arts (poetry & fiction coupled with art & music), has really interesting
literary flights of fancy, and is one of the few magazines that has me
exclaiming in delight at how unique it is and yet how much it appeals to my
sense of style.

"Seven Leagues" itself is a poem I wrote while waiting in my car prior to
library training in Williamsburg, VA, last October. Having seen a call for
submissions for superhero poems, I was pondering "true heroes" and had just
written a poem about my father as a World War II veteran (as kids, we used to
talk about Dad's "World War II muscles" having won the war). Suddenly, this
poem came out--what truly heroic thing an adult might do with real seven league
boots.

Hazard Cat
"Claiming the Cat-Scope" by Lyn C. A. Gardner

I wrote this poem after we realized that some of our cats had been marking many
of our walls, floors, and personal possessions. I had the bright idea that if
we had some sort of UV light, we could find the stains and clean them, so Marc
borrowed one from work. The pervasive scrawl of cat messages was truly a wonder
to behold.

"The Mustache" by Lyn C. A. Gardner will be available in print on Sept. 7, 2010,
and can be ordered now at Amazon
(http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0981964311/ravenelectrick) & Barnes and
Noble (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/books/e/9780981964317/?itm=1). I've
included a link to the publisher's description and two book reviews. The book
will soon be available at Hampton Public Library as well
(http://hamptonpubliclibrary.org/).

I owe this story entirely to Marc. He not only encouraged me (repeatedly), he
generously allowed me to usurp his laptop for a month, and drove us to CO in
October 2009 while I wrote beside him as we rolled across Kentucky and Kansas.
I worked on it in spare moments in hotel rooms during the trip and finished it
after hours in the library while waiting for Marc to drive me home after a deer
ran in front of my car, then put in more time as he drove me home.

The inspiration for the story comes from my earliest remembered meeting with my
very creative and beautiful Aunt Jeanne--and my fear of her husband's mustache.
Aunt Jeanne & I had a wonderful time on the swing, walking the rural landscape,
playing, and getting to know one another; I have always admired her kindness,
her independent spirit, her wisdom in looking at life, and the sheer fun she is
to be around. After that visit, because I was so shy of Uncle Rick, she mailed
me a black construction paper mustache, as a joke and to get me used to it, but
that only scared me more. These inspiring moments aside, however, all the
events and characters have been radically altered, though I hope some of Aunt
Jeanne's loving spirit comes through.

One of the things I love about Sybil's Garage is the way they combine music with
their poetry and fiction, and their quirky, perfect art selections.

For #7, Matthew Kressel has (once again) put together a playlist of the songs
selected by the authors to accompany their works. This is a great "soundtrack"
by which to read the magazine. Even if you don't have a copy of the magazine
(yet?), please enjoy this playlist! You'll find my selection as track #3, to
accompany my poem "Seven Leagues." The playlist itself should be a great
introduction to this eclectic, fun, thoughtful, and surprising magazine!

Not for the faint of heart. I wrote this in a Donald Barthelme mood, in a fit
of frustration with my fiction workshop of the time. I don't think many of you
will like or even enjoy this story, so be warned. However, if you enjoy twisted
fiction & would like to read the best, I highly recommend my favorite Barthelme
story, "Some of Us Had Been Threatening Our Friend Colby," available in the NEW
YORKER archive if you have an electronic subscription
(http://www.newyorker.com/archive/1973/05/26/1973_05_26_039_TNY_CARDS_000308997)\
, or in many short story anthologies (especially those edited by Louis
Untermeyer) and collections, such as Barthelme's AMATEURS (available at my
library and possibly yours).

For my crazy story, visit the August 26, 2010 issue of MISFIT MAGAZINE:
http://www.misfit-magazine.com/

"Animal Crackers" by Lyn C. A. Gardner,
http://www.misfit-magazine.com/2010/08/animal-crackers-by-lyn-ca-gardner.html

Again, a warning--this is not only weird, but a rather hateful story. My
leaping-off point is a very twisted take-off on my high school experience as a
scorned and unsightly A student...from the point of view of the popular girls
who tortured me. Note: not a single one of these characters is masquerading
from life. And none of these events ever happened to me or anyone I know. (At
least...not exactly.)

FYI: As some of you know, I haven't been writing since May 12, 2010. Instead,
I've been selling as much of my existing stock as I possibly can--having a fire
sale to clear the shelves. Though my original intent was a
going-out-of-business sale, I've since decided I'll probably dabble at writing
again…someday. In the meantime, I'll continue to update this list about every
two months, so you can see what's on the horizon.

The July/August 2010 issue of STAR*LINE (Vol. 33, No. 4) contains a special
treat: a poem each by Dad and me. "To the Muse of Something" by Delbert R.
Gardner is a dark complaint (laced with black humor) from a writer to a
tormenting muse, and the scifaiku "Schrödinger's Catsitter" by Lyn C. A. Gardner
is a meow-out to the fate of that long-suffering cat.

A treat indeed!  I loved your clever take on the iconic cat, and once again I was impressed by your father's mastery of craft.  It's great to see an issue of Star*Line featuring both of you.

First off, thank you very much to Greer, Theo, Norma, and all those who have
contacted me off-list, for all your recent comments! They are truly much
appreciated.

Second, just in time for fall, I'm proud to have two stories included in:

31 Days of Halloween Horror (my favorite holiday! a great way to celebrate)
A Shadowfire Press LLC anthology

http://www.shadowfirepress.com

This is an ebook, which is available in multiple formats for $6. Previews are
available at the website.

The stories of mine that are reprinted here are
"Things Not to Forget" by Lyn C. A. Gardner (based on a nightmare; first
published in Whispering Spirits Ezine, 2005 Flash Fiction Contest Showcase)

"The Isle of Skye" by Lyn C. A. Gardner (inspired by Mom's visit there while in
college; first published in Visions, Vol. 1, Iss. 2, Spring 1987, and reprinted
in Moonlicht Nicht: The E-Zine of Supernatural Scotland, Iss. 5, 2003).

For those of you who either enjoyed "Kelmscott Manor: In the Attics," or were
curious about my William Morris meets H. G. Wells story, it's now in print!
(The first publication was in ezine.) This Canadian publisher promises an
exciting new look at the SF classic:

Timelines: Stories Inspired by H. G. Wells' The Time Machine, edited by J.W.
Schnarr, Northern Frights Publishing, 2010
http://www.northernfrightspublishing.webs.com/
includes "Kelmscott Manor: In the Attics" by Lyn C. A. Gardner

"First published in 1895, The Time Machine by Herbert George (H.G.) Wells is a
blueprint for science fiction and horror that persists to this day: underneath
the science and the theories that attract a reader's mind, there is an
underlying story of a person who struggles with the question that burns in the
heart of every man: what does it all mean?

"Now is your chance to find out.

"In an anthology spanning the entire human history and reaching far into its
future, witness bold new visions of man's quest to conquer the fourth
dimension."

Every year I welcome the opportunity to participate in SFPA's online Halloween
Poetry Reading--it's such a great way to celebrate my favorite time of year!

Please visit to listen to all the spooky poems and see all the fall
illustrations. The site will continue to be updated with new content, so feel
free to make several visits! At present, the page includes both a poem and an
illustration of mine:

"House 5" and "Lying in Wait" by Lyn C. A. Gardner

"House 5," you may remember, appeared in _Cinema Spec: Tales of Hollywood and
Fantasy_, Ed. Karen A. Romanko (Raven Electrick Ink,
http://ravenelectrick.com/cinemaspec.html), and was inspired by my experiences
as a projectionist at the defunct but sorely missed AMC Patrick Henry 7
Theatres. In the illustration, the witch-cat is Cleo and the pumpkin-cat is
Rocco.

And now...welcome to SFPA's 2010 Halloween Poetry Reading!

I just got word that the following anthology is now available:

THE HUNGRY DEAD edited by Lester Smith

Published by Popcorn Press
www.popcornpress.com

Includes reprints of the following works by Lyn C. A. Gardner:
"Godolin's Remains," "Late," "Rildix Falls," "Salvaging the MONITOR," "Throat,"
and "What Came After"

Publisher's description from the first link above:

“Hungry are the dead,
unable to be sated.
Still their nation grows.â€

â€"Winifred Lewis

Every culture has its tales of ghosts and ghoulies, dead things that stalk the
night to prey upon the living. Stories of these creatures have been told around
campfires from time immemorial, lending an added chill to the darkness beyond.
They have been the subject of countless songs and poems.

What is it that the living find so fascinating about the living dead? That is a
question we’ll leave you to answer. We’re just happy to add to the mythology
in this collection of poetry and short stories featuring “zombies, vampires,
ghosts, and other dead things that want to eat you.â€

Price: $12.95

Though I don't always comment I always appreciate it.  It's great to see how
much success you are having.  Love, Dot

My poem "Midnight Posture" is now available to discerning fans! I wrote this
while sitting with Marc outside the Art Room at RavenCon, using prompts related
to Edgar Allan Poe that I'd put together for the poetry workshop I'd conducted
the previous night. The recent loss of many loved ones weighed heavily on my
mind.
