Hi all,

There is now one month until the commencement of the submission period for the
2012 Windhammer Prize for Short Gamebook Fiction. If you are a prospective
entrant in this year's competition I would urge you to revisit the entry
criteria for this year's prize and confirm that the entry you will be submitting
does meet the 2012 guidelines. Of particular importance is the content criteria
and the length of entries forwarded regarding maximum word count.

All information regarding the Windhammer Prize can be found at:
http://www.arborell.com/windhammer_prize.html and any questions regarding the
competition can be forwarded through the email address given at the webpage.

May Glory and Renown follow all who enter.

Regards
Wayne Densley

The only information I have is what Dave Morris has written in comments on his
Fabled Lands blog (see below). Someone closer to the source might have more
recent information.

21 February 2012:

“…the sales of the print books are nowhere near high enough on their own to
make books 7-12 viable. However, as you’ll have seen recently, we have plans
to release FL on various digital platforms, and we also have the new solo FL
gamebooks in the works. The combined sales of those across all platforms
including print will, we hope, justify progressing with books 7 onwards.”

1 October 2011:

“The news I talked about in the post doesn’t concern print copies of 5 and
6, but I do have a ray of hope about those. Over the last few months, sales of
Books 1-4 have been steadily picking up, and if that trend continues it could
become economically feasible for Fabled Lands LLP to go ahead with more print
gamebooks.”

30 July 2011:

“…we’re still in the position of needing to see the gamebooks build a
bigger following before it makes any sense to do more books. We have just agreed
a deal to get the first 6 books out on Android and browser-based versions, which
hopefully will reach a much broader readership than the reprints did. That’s
not to say we don’t want to do print versions too, but I now think print
gamebooks only work as "collector’s editions" for the most dedicated readers.
So the plan is: the iOS, Android and browser versions cast a wide net, and if
enough of those people demand it then books 7-12 will be released in digital
form too, and we’ll aim to do print versions in the wake of those. That way,
the apps pay for all the maps and artwork that a print edition needs. So the
short answer is: we’d love to complete the series, and even take it beyond
book 12, and in print as well as digital form if possible, but we can only do
that by building a commercial case for Fabled Lands LLP to do it.”

27 June 2011:

“…immediate plans are for the RPG sourcebooks to come first - all 12 of
them. The rest of the FL gamebook series will come if sales are high enough. At
the moment, that means digital sales, though it’s possible that a print
edition of those books might be viable too.”

Graham.

There was also this more recent comment concerning the possibility of using a
crowdfunding website to raise investment for Fabled Land 7-12:

20 April 2012:

We have wondered about that … I think the existing fanbase for FL isn't big
enough (unless everybody pledged $200 per book!) so that’s why we want to see
if the Android, Kindle and iOS versions can grow the readership first. If so,
we’ll certainly look at ways to fund the development of the rest of the
series.

thxs for the info.

it does look like kickstarter/crowdfunding would be a great way to raise funds,
if there was a large enough fanbase.

1 option would be to try to do it 1 book at a time. even if it didnt hit it's
goal, it would be good to see what the level of interest was. plus you would be
getting some exposure even if the fund level was not reached.

another possibility would be for a related item that would be alot cheaper to
produce initially, ie a poster map of the fabled lands world. this would be
easier to fund and would give an idea of fanbase numbers.

there has been a lot of comics and books getting great exposure recently. I
would love gamebooks to also get some exposure, especially as I feel there is a
small renaissance building up around them.

cheers

I'm pretty happy with what I've seen of the state of the genre. If nothing
else, Fighting Fantazine alone makes it a good time to be a gamebook fan
(and I don't just say that because I'm the adventure editor for the
magazine; I just do a little bit of quality control, but I can't take any
credit for actually gathering together all the great stuff that Alexander
packs into every issue).

I'm also excited to see increased academic study of interactive fiction; I
think this may be a growing trend as people start to think about how
interactive books may have helped contribute to the current multimedia
culture. (I'm not making any sweeping claims about the relevance of
gamebooks -- but they're certainly a factor in there). Hopefully I'll have
more to say about this in the coming months.

Electronic reading is also growing on me. I love my e-ink Nook; at last a
screen I can read from that's as comfortable as paper. The problem is
that, while the Nook is great for basic CYOA-style books, it doesn't have
the capabilities for more complex books with game systems. The Kindle is
more feature-rich, but I don't want to buy into Amazon's closed standards.
Maybe when ePub3 comes along the open standards world will catch up. I'm
also not interested in the flashier LCD tablets like the iPad; backlit
displays don't feel right to me for long-term reading. I'll just keep
dreaming of a dual-screen e-ink device (you know, so we can have the
character sheet on one side and the text on the other).

Asunto: Re: [gamebooks] Question about Dealing with Feelings

Okay, so it took me more than two years to get around to researching
this... but I finally did. Turns out that Elizabeth Crary has two
additional interactive series that were not listed on gamebooks.org! I'm
Lost is part of the "Children's Problem Solving Books" and there's also a
newer "Kids Can Choose" series. More details here:

Arborell.com is pleased to announce the commencement of the 2012 Windhammer
Prize for Short Gamebook Fiction. The initial submission phase runs from the
1st of August to the 7th of September and entries are now being accepted. All
prospective entrants should note that there have been significant changes to the
entry guidelines. These changes include the entry length which has been
adjusted to a 23,000 word count rather than the previous 40 page maximum. Also
fan-fiction can no longer be accepted. This has been necessitated by the offer
in this year's competition of commercial publication of all winning entries as a
part of the competition prize pool.

Now in its fifth year this contest is proudly sponsored by arborell.com and
continues as a means to promote the gamebook genre, and to provide exposure
within a competitive environment for aspiring gamebook authors. In particular
this prize values creative and original works of gamebook fiction. The
challenge given to those who wish to participate is to develop a full gamebook
experience whilst meeting stringent requirements regarding length and original
content. This competition is open to all gamebook writers and requires no entry
fee or other costs.

All information regarding this year's comp including full entry guidelines,
competition schedule and prize details can be found at the Windhammer Prize
webpage at http://www.arborell.com/windhammer_prize.html

For more information on the Chronicles of Arborell gamebook series, sponsors of
this competition, go to http://www.arborell.com/

May Glory and Renown follow all who enter.

I can't decide what's worse, the title or the cover. I suppose I should buy
the book first before deciding what it's like, but oh that cover...
