Gallery East opened in December of 1979 in Boston's downtown Leather District. For three years it became a gathering place where over 1000 artists performed and exhibited their work. Some called it a home for the avant garde, while others termed it the home of the skinheads; still 'the art culture that fell to earth' was truly 'a world unknown to most'.

'Going to Gallery East may be just as much of an experiment as the works it presents. Whatever the case, however, it will not provoke an idle reaction; and that’s all to its credit. The city needs a place for risk-taking, even when it fails.'
