Hi Sean,
I would say that there is an element of mystery to Fyrnsidu, but not
because information is withheld to the uninitiated. Information is
available to any who choose to utilize it, but is is one thing to know
about Fyrnsidu and another to *know* it. Truly knowing and experiencing
the faith comes with spiritual practice, hence the mystery. I believe
this is true with any form of spirituality.
Mystery and secrecy in regards to the magical practices associated with
Fyrnsidu is another matter. Levels of "initiation" are necessary in
magical teachings, not to be exclusionary, but because some practices
require prerequisite skills and knowledge. Attempting wiglung (trance
work) without a knowledge of meditation and self-hypnosis would be much
like attempting calculus without a knowledge of addition. It's just not
going to happen. Also, attempting more advanced magical practices
without proper knowledge can be dangerous. A level of aptitude is also
necessary for magical practices. Much like anything else in life, some
have it and some don't. Just like I have no aptitude when it comes to
pretty much any sport you can name.
Blessings,
Leofrun
