Has anyone tried the programming cables available on ebay? They dont
have the DIN plug, rather, they use the modular plug. I am trying to
save a few bucks. bob

The manual states that the priority channel is on channel#1. Is there
anyway to change this to another channel similar to the vx-5? Just
picked up a 7800 and 8800 and haven't played with them yet. Just
wondering if anyone else has figured this out.
The resistor ladder IS how you select the region and the TX coverage. The problem with ARS is that different regions have different ARS settings. Since the region settings are tied to the transmit coverage, it may not be possible to get both UK ARS and full transmit coverage. However, there are a couple of UK users on this mailing list; hopefully they'll let you know if I'm incorrect. :)

For info I've had a look at the 0 ohm resistor ladder next to the
main control chip and the third one from the front is connected. So
can either by the resistor network or via the menu the full UK spec

If not I'll just program in the repeaters into memory but would like

Hi guys the yaesu ft 8900 quad band is now available for under £250 new
from all major dealers here in the uk, so i wonder whats going to
replace it, digital maybe gps enabled, i wonder, its only a guess but
im sure there will be a new replacement soon, i sold my 8900 as i never
got to using 28/50fm side of the radio, i just wish yaesu had put two
antenna outlets on the back of the radio as i would have preffered to
have two dual band antennas on my vehicle instead of 1 quad band
antenna, and most users i have met seem to go for the tri band mobile
type, also for home base use nobody has done a quadband colinier base
to my knowlege, i have a 8800 now and love it no problems at all also a
7800 went to a rally and couldnt resist the superb price and spec,
costs more for an equivelant uniden scanner and thats only rx, ok guys
goodnight and let me no if anybody heres of anything new, regards Karlos

Try to open up ft7800.exe on your computer.
When you installed the ADMS software you should have let the program
install an icon on your desktop ..that is how you should be able to
start the program........you might re install the software to make it
work correctly.

So then I take it that Word functions as the editor? That's really weird. Mine comes up in the program and it looks more like Excel (spreadsheet). Explain to me in more detail exactly what you want to do. You want to
program in another frequency into ch 1?

simplifies things considerably. You fill in all the frequencies, tones

Sometimes you can get lucky on EBay, but I've found that the prices on EBay can get up close to new price pretty quickly, and there are often problems with used rigs from EBay. There's no substitute for a factory warranty. :)
You can buy a brand new one at R & L Electronics for $234. I knew
someone last summer sold one for $200. He tried to sell it to me, but
$34 more I got a new one with warrenty!

Also at these frequencies you will want good coax. Even RG8 beyound
100 is not the greatest. A good regulated power is a must. Don't
forget the antenna. The better and higher the antenna. The better
off you are!

Your antenna is the deciding factor here. If you have a good antenna
your ft7800 will make a good base rig.

I just traded my VX-7R and accessories for a used FT-7800R. It looks
like new and the gentleman I feel was honest with me about not having
used it much but he was not the first owner...anyway,
When it would not hit the repeater nearly 40 (flat land) miles away
that my VX-7 into a 30 watt amp would hit, I was stumped. I did a
power check and found the actual output levels were not coordinated
with what they should be ie, low power setting= factory 5W, actual 20
watts, and so on each level had differing levels as though someone had
tried to align the levels without knowing how. I proceded to the
alignment mode as directed by the factory service manual. 70 cm worked
out fine and high power actually would go to about 45 watts but
factory called for 40 +/- 0.5 so I set it per factory spec. 2M was
going good until I got to the high power setting. It would only turn
up to about 35 watts of the factory advertised 50. I have heard a
couple of others with similar issues but theirs apparently put out
normal power when cool and dropped to 35 watts when warm after
transmitting for a few minutes. One was cold solder joints and the
other was a ground connection issue with the screws that hold the
board down somehow being a tad loose and losing appropriate ground
once the board warmed from talking.
One of the guys reported that he had been advised that if there is a
low power output issue it will be nearly 2 meters and is commonly a
pin diode "between the uhf and vhf sections". He said it was designed
so that it sould blow to prevent 2 meters from blowing a final but
would not affect 70cm...(because of the lower output having more
leeway before being over driven???)
Has anyone heard a report of this problem, if so what was the
diagnosis and repair? Is anyone familiar with which diode this pin
diode is that affects only the 2 meter section?
Any helpful info would be appreciated as I already have a bit tied up
in the radio and from what I have read, Yaesu is in no hurry to do
repairs nor are they inexpensive

I don't have a 7800 - was going to buy one but decided to buy the
8800, but decided to stay in this group...
In most ham radios, there isn't a "receive only" option. Basically
you need to program the tx frequency to be a frequency the radio
won't transmit on. So if you want say a receive only of 440.500, put
the transmit as say 470.500 or a offset of 30.00 mhz.
Evan
If a channel sits in a location that the transceiver is not allowed to transmit to, then it will be receive-only. If you're just trying to lock the mic to prevent accidental transmission, you might try setting the split to an invalid frequency... I don't know if that would work or not.
Can someone try programming an invalid transmit frequency and see what happens when you try to save it?
I would like to program a few channels in this radio. I want them to be
a receive only. I read the book, but I can't find anything. Is there a
way to set up a few memory channels as receive only? Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

That looks like a nice radio. I will have to give it a closer look
