OH! FOR THE LUV OF....!
So. Not long after I
make this original post, I'm sitting at work, thumbing
through the brand new issue of SANTOSCENE that I got off
of Bobb Cotter earlier in the day. Right there!
Right there on the page in front of me are the words
wot shows me foolishness! SANTO! SANTO hosted a show
in Mexico, showing his own films no less. SANTO!
Kind of counts as an "Enmascarado Host" now, doesn't
he. Right around 1970-71 or so.
SANTO. Geez.
Well, if ya' gotta be wrong about something, no point
in doing it in a little way...
So. Have there
been any RECENT Enmascarado Horror Hosts....?

Okay, so's I'm reading this nifty McFarland book
by Elena Watson on Televison Horror Hosts, and it
occurs to me: out of all the slinky sirens, pasty-faced
ghouls, cackling mad scientists and general wisecracking
MC's who have hosted Horror Movie shows, we haven't
had, to my knowledge, a single MASKED Host! That's
just WRONG! Very Wrong!
Now, of course I don't mean
a Halloween costume masked Host. I think there's
been several of those. But an actual Enmascarado! It
seems like a natural idea! Monster-fightin' Masked
Wrestler introduces Horror Movies as primers on what to
look out for while "monster-hunting".
Man! Would
this go over in those vast bi-lingual border zones or
not? Hell! I'd go for double features with one in
English and the other being a Spanish language import in
some markets.
Damn! Wish I owned a television
station...

CITO #10 is going out this week! Thanks to all of
you who subscribe. This is our most packed issue yet,
with a full 8 pages of material, no ads!

BUT...
lots of you long-time subscribers have not renewed
your subscriptions. We've sent two notices to anyone
on the bubble of dropping off the list, but the list
we just generated for #10 is less than 1/2 of what
it was at the beginning of the year. Some
long-familiar names won't be getting this issue... folks like
Tyler, Steve, Richard, Michele, Robert, and you kooks
from Plan 9 in Japan. (See how much we love you, we're
on a first name basis!)

If the subscriber
base of CITO gets too low, we're going to have to
discontinue the newsletter, which would suck. If you're
unsure when your sub ends, just email me and I'll fill
ya in!

Thanks cats,

?

This is Calavera, the Rose City Rudo joining you
from Portland, Oregon. I am here to grip any threads
of lucha action and happenings that could bridge the
golden state to the land of beavers and ducks. We have
quite a bit of ECCW (NWA) action in this corner of the
states, but finding real lucha has envolved two weekend
trips down to San Francisco.

Okay. This is history. Old match. BUT, I'd never
seen it before. Since we were on the topic of Mask
matches, I brought my recently acquired tape of the CMLL
PPV (03/17/00) to work with me and had it on in the
background while I surfed the Internet and generally tried
to stay awake all night. Didn't expect to care much,
since I already knew how the match turned out. Just
background, y'know?
The match started out with fun
entrances for both Luchadors and then ground into slow but
serious gear. I looked up every once in a while.
It
turned bloody early on and the drama level seemed to go
up, so I eased off the Internet to actually watch the
rest of the match. Eventually I wound up on the edge
of my seat, seriously into the match. (remember, I
already knew the outcome). Big surprise. HUGE drama at
the unmasking ceremony with the whole crowd seemingly
very into the significance of the moment. Great sense
of history.
All in all, I hate to see Mask vs
Mask matches happen more than once in awhile. Rare
events. But I really wound up appreciating this
particular match. Great drama. Grueling, technical
performances from the wrestlers. Blood and torn fabric
everywhere. Two thumbs up, check it out if you haven't
already seen it.

I saw La Parka trade masks with a Villiano during
a six-man match, then his brothers beat on hi
thinking it was Parka.

The Dinamitas once ripped
Rayo Jr's hood off, in front of Rayo I at a ceremony,
then set fire to it atop the ring post.

There
needs to be more serious mask wars like this going on,
give some meaning to these feuds. Guys like Super
Astro, Fishman, Pierroth and DR. Cerebro have lost their
hoods in POINTLESS, un-hyped, untelevised matches that
went nowhere after. Sad.

?

Interesting topic! I like unknown's idea of
taking another guy's mask and gimmick and him having to
win it back....the loser would present the winner
with his mask and gear. Has anyone ever unmasked an
opponent during a match and then strutted around wearing
the maskless guy's mask in a match?

Another advantage a maskless wrestler has is if
it's a loser leaves town match or what have you, he
always has the option of putting on a hood and coming
back to wrestle ala Dusty Rhodes in Mid-South. I think
he returned as the Midnight Cowboy. Also I think
Tommy Rich did the same thing in Georgia Wrestling. I
guess a masked wrestler could do the same, changing his
identity until he could come back, but still....

If it were me wrestling, I'd wear 2 masks. A thiner
mask under my main one. Then if I lost I'd gladly give
up my "Main Mask"...much to the dismay or everyone
else, but hey just cause I "unmask", doesn't mean yer
gonna see my real face!! I remember a few matches were
a masked wrestler would do that...you thought for
sure he was gonna get unmasked and you were gonna see
that ugly mug hidden under that hood, only to be
disappointed by him wearing another mask...makes for great
drama...

Just my 2 cents wort'....

X

YES! See! Any of those match penalties would be
more dramatic, more exciting than what they actually
do! I've never been able to understand that.
Can
you imagine someone like, say, Mascara 2000
swaggering around with a Rayo de Jalisco mask on, while the
Jr. etc tried desperately to win it back, to save the
family honor? Now THAT would be cool!
OR, howabout
the maskless wrestler loses and has to cover his
face, but has the option to use one of the Masks he's
taken in a previous match! That would be a great way to
revive old gimmicks and revitalize merchandizing and
generally keep things fresh and interesting.
The way
it's done now leads pretty much to little other than
an escalating "Mask Attrition" where Masks are
falling at an alarming rate and the new talent isn't
getting enough time to build up as replacements.

Yeah, it really makes no sense. Loosing the mask
means you lose the merch sales, future licensing of
your image, and everything you've done your whole
career to build that mask into something special.
Hair... grows back in three weeks.

I think there
should be different grades of mask matches as well.

There could be mask suspension matches wherein the
loser has to shed his mask and wear a neutral yellow
mask in shame (ala the old Cowardly Yellow Dog gag in
the South), or a plain black hood. Then he can win
back the right to his mask at a rematch.

Then
there should be huge fueds wherein when a mask is lost,
it is retired for ALL TIME. No Jr.'s, no III's and
IV's, no 2000's, nothing... It's like Carthage, the
cities are raised and the earth is salted.

And to
my knowledge, there's never been a mask TAKING,
wherein the winner actually gets the other guys gimmick
and gets to reap all the rewards of that hood. It'd
been amazing to see a rudo wearing some hero's hood
and cashing in on his merch and soiling the sacred
image of it.

?

Okay. This is a pet peeve, but I got's to get it
out somewhere. Mask vs. Mask matches. High drama.
Tragedy either way. Often unnecessary but at least they
seem fair as exchanges. Both contestants risk similar
fates.
Mask vs Hair? Not fair! No way, no how! Now, look at
it. If the "Hair" wrestler loses, he gets a free
scalp shave. Temporary humiliation of defeat. But the
hair grows back and the loss doesn't have any real
lasting effect on the wrestler's career. If the Masked
wrestler loses, he loses the gimmick that his career is
built around. He loses his entire ring identity,
permanently. Plenty of unmasked wrestlers go on to have
bare-faced careers and a few even get over better than they
ever did under the hood. (Shocker. nuff said.) But
their careers are forever effected by the outcome of
the match. Something that their opponent does not
face.
To be fair, they ought to have "Mask vs Face"
matches! If the unmasked wrestler loses, he should have to
cover his ugly bare face with a hood of some type and
be unable to use his old ring name until he can win
it back in a later match. It would still not be an
exactly fair exchange, but it would be a whole lot
closer!
