Hi all.

In the process of setting up my mini-tnc to be used as a Digi repeater, most of
the configuration is ok, but not sure about the BTEXT.

Been told that this is where your location is place, if not using a GPS.
Have looked around, and the lats / longs details that is used, I have never
seen.

Here is an example: 2948.27S/ 15018.43S

Is this standard for the mini-tnc?

Regards

Robert

No, sorry. Look at the document that I wrote last year on the foxdelta website.
The format has to be exactly as this or the MiniTNC will not accept it.

Have troubles after that send me your long./lat. and I will reply with the correction.
What you have here will not work.

Try using below and substitute your long./lat. using the exact
format below.

BTEXT !3117.05N/09346.10W#APRS MiniTNC v1.09 Digi

After the '#" sign it can be any text as a comment.

Thanks dennis, have looked at the doco on the website.

It shows BTEXT !2217.05N/07046.10E# VU2FD etc etc.

What is this lat / long protocol.

Its not UTM, or DD, or DMS or even MD.

Thanks again Dennis, but that is no where near where the tnc is going to be located.

In Australia its will be  South and East, Not north and west.

Hello

Dennis has given an example of BTEXT string that you may use.

Make BTEXT with your own (or location that you want for aprs)Lat/Long and enter
plain text after # of your choice.

Note that BTEXT for FoxDigi and Mini-TNC starts with ! and end with #

I am pretty sure that the format is degrees and minutes, with minutes
represented as mm.hh, representing minutes and hundredths of minutes.

In my dealings with Foxview3, which I understand uses very similar TNC firmware,
I xheated a bit to xome up with a functional BTEXT string. I fired up a
TinyTrak 3 with a GPS receiver and radio, and copied the beacon text it
generated from aprs.fi.

It is !DDMM.SSN/DDDMM.SSE where DD=degrees,MM=Mins, and SS=Secs.
All after '#' is comments.

Hello all,

I just purchased and built a mini-TNC. After completion I hooked up the cables
for power and computer, and ran a terminal program. When I turn on the mini-TNC
the power LED and the RX LED come on. Is this normal? In the terminal window the
initial text comes up with the cmd: under it. My issue is that I can not type
anything after the cmd prompt. It just starts scrolling and the phrase "watch
dog timer failure" comes up repeatedly. If I start hitting random keys on the
keyboard sometimes it will stop and let me enter text. After I get to enter HELP
it will not accept the enter key and come up with a ? then starts to scroll
again.

What have I done wrong in building this to have this issue happen? What can I do
to correct this?

Thanks in advance!

First, let me ask which terminal program are you using?
Second, what version of the firmware are you using?
It looks to me to be a baud rate issue.
Try using 4800 baud rate, 8 bits, no parity, and 1 stop bit.
If not good results, try using 9600 baud rate.

Let me know your results.
Terra Term is good to use as it does not send any INIT STRING
characters. Hyperterminal does the same.

I would recommend v1.09 if you have a programmer (PIC).

I use Tera Term VT and have also tried Putty. I don't have Hyperterminal on my

greatly prefer using it.

My firmware version is 1.09 and I ordered the 9600 baud rate package. I have
tried using the 4800 baud rate. All I got were really strange characters. Could
the PIC IC have an issue?? or possibly the 232 chip? I'm just stabbing at
possibilities right now.

Ok. Terra Term is ok to use.
N5VRP-5 is a MiniTNC/Foxdigi using v1.09 (9600) version.
Are you sure you wired the TX/RX lines properly?
4800 baud would give you crazy characters on the display.
If you received the "CMD:" prompt the TX/RX lines should be ok.
It is waiting for a character or key from the keyboard at this point so
somewhere it is thinking a key on the keyboard is stuck or the Terra Term
program is configured wrong and throwing out characters. I use Terra Term v1.23 Free Version. Check your settings there.

Let me know those settings for the COMM port and Terminal.
It could be throwing out CR's or LF's (carriage returns or linefeeds).

I will get the Comm port and Terminal settings for you when I get home. What do
you mean about the TX/RX lines? Do i have to have the radio hooked up to program
the TNC? Or are you talking about the serial cable from the computer to the TNC?
This serial cable has worked to program a couple PIC based controllers in the
past just fine with the putty program.

No, you do not have to have a radio connected to program the
MiniTNC. The TX/RX lines are RS232 TX Data and RX data coming
from and to the computer to program the MiniTNC at 9600 baud
8 bits, no parity, and 1 stop bit. Yes the serial cable.

It is not the PIC or 232 chips if you get the signon message
and the "CMD:" prompt.

I looks to me to be settings in TerraTerm. Sometimes NULL Modem adapters are needed on serial ports to reverse the TX/RX
lines described above. In the paragraph above is working, then the
problem is TerraTerm settings.

The COM1 port settings are 9600 baud, 8 bit, parity = none, Stop bit 1, flow
control none.

I have tried to see what happens when I change the flow control and other
settings and nothing seems to work. It just appears to be keyboard deaf.

I thought I read somewhere on the FoxDelta site that this TNC didn't need a null
modem. I am not familiar with those.

Ok, I just went out and found a null modem and tried that. I didn't even get the
sign on message or cmd:. I think I will look for some other terminal programs as
I wait to hear back form you.

Then it can not be the TX/RX data lines reversed.
Try to find a very simple terminal program.
One that does Not output an init string for phone modem or
other tnc modem use.

No flow control on the terminal program should be needed.
The TX and RX Leds should not be lighted until data goes in/out
of the tnc serial port. The POWER led should be the only lighted
led. When you depress any key the RX led should blink each time
you depress a key. The TX led should only light when it transmits data
or a beacon message.

The signon message and cmd: should be display when powered up one time. It
should wait for a command up to approx. a minute if you type
the command in, then wait for a CR (carriage return). It will come back with "?"
if illegal command or "OK" if valid command. If "OK" comes back and no other
settings desired then enter "PERM" to store
the changes.

Hello Wade

Null modem is not required for Mini-TNC. Just use a standard serial cable to
configure.

Ok so far I have tried Putty, Tera term, and I finally found Hyper terminal and
I get the same results on each one, "watch dog timer failure" Since my RX light
is on constantly I think something electrical is wrong.

Ok, I think I might have found something here. I followed the bags of resistors
for what they were marked and never double checked the actual value before
installing them. Looking over the schematic I found an error. Either a change
was made to some of the resistors and the schematic was never updated or I got
the wrong parts. I have for Resistors 5,7,12,13,14,18 100ohm values (brown,
black, brown). I never got the prescribed 1K ohm (brown, black, red)resistors.
I'm not an electrical engineer but I think this might give us a problem. Let me
know what you think.

Also, if I got the wrong parts I wonder if anyone else received the wrong ones?

Please let me know if I have the wrong ones so I can get them swapped out.

Wade

Ok, I was able to swap out the 100ohm resistors with 1K resisitors and removed a
few components I had incorrectly installed (thanks Dinesh) Now everything works
as stated as far as programming iand setup is concerned. I haven't hook up the
radio yet, but I have little doubt that anything else will go wrong now.

Thanks for all the assistance!

Ok, I was able to swap out the 100ohm resistors with 1K resisitors and removed a few components I had incorrectly installed (thanks Dinesh) Now everything works as stated as far as programming iand setup is concerned. I haven't hook up the radio yet, but I have little doubt that anything else will go wrong now.

Thanks for all the assistance!

Looking over the schematic I found an error. Either a change was made to some of the resistors and the schematic was never updated or I got the wrong parts. I have for Resistors 5,7,12,13,14,18 100ohm values (brown, black, brown). I never got the prescribed 1K ohm (brown, black, red)resistors. I'm not an electrical engineer but I think this might give us a problem. Let me know what you think.

Hello

A new interesting project: "Antenna Analyzer" using PIC18F2550/2553 is uploaded.

Project features are:

USB Powered
AD9851 used for Signal Generation
AD8307 for Detector
Resistive return loss bridge.
PIC Firmware and PC software by Tony / I2TZK (http://www.i2tzk.com)

Kits will have carrier PCB for AD9851 and chip may be pre-soldered.

It may take few more days to get kits ready.

I am sure a lot of homebrewers will find this project useful.

Project is listed at: http://www.foxdelta.com/products/aaz.htm

Hello all,

I'm back again with one more issue. After getting my build issues resolved I
have run into another road block. I am receiving APRS raw data just fine,
however I have no re-transmit. In diagnosing this issue I have attempted to use
the converse mode and the calibrate mode and still can not get the unit to key
up the radio. I have had my settings looked at by Dinesh and and everything
looks good. I have double and triple checked the radio, cables, and general
setup of the station in hopes of figuring this out and everything is fine. I am
out of ideas and am looking for suggestions. ANy help would be greatly
appreciated!

Thanks

Send me your settings.
Give me the radio, gps (yes/no), longitude/latitude, and anything else of help.
It has to be something simple.
