Ahhh, yes the smell of burning ribs on charcoals. Crossing swords as we train
and having people watching. Fencing has returned to New Bedford. We were a
little thin due to illness and hangovers, but still were able to do the basics
and did a little two on one training. Now the smell of those ribs has been
replaced with the smell of Ben Gay. But we will be back at it next week.

In two weeks, April 17th we will be having buckler making as time and place.

Sundays: 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM
3131 Acushnet Ave.
New Bedford, MA 02745

Bring you lunch for the grill if you wish. This is almost as good as opening
day at Yankee Stadium, but much better then Fenway.

We are on for this week, Sunday, April 10. Remember we will have the charcoal
bbq/smoker up and running for those who wish to cook their lunches.

Sunday, April 17th - Bucker making (material suggestions on next week)
Sunday, May 15th – RPG making (designs welcome)
Sunday, June 12th – Fiber sword making (material list a week in advance)

Also in the works, I am working with the owner of a glass blowing company. We
are working out the details now, but there might be a couple classes depending
on interest as she will only do groups of six. We are shooting for the month of
July right now. We have some other things in the fire as we hope to have a
different class each month.

Respectfully,
Philippe

The weather was great and we got a lot done. We are establishing warm up drills.
We worked on single rapier and case for most of the time on the floor. It was a
good work out and I think everyone had fun in the process.

We started the afternoon mawing on food everyone brought and cooked on the BBQ.
We ended the day with toasted marsh mellows. Food and fighting, life is good.

Also Ryan and Tricia are now studying for the LHA marshal's test; I think they
will do well.

Next Sunday, April 17th in addition to practice we will be having a buckler
workshop to you guess it make bucklers. I will send out a list of suggested by
mid week and I am also looking for sites showing different ideas. So far I have
had no luck.

Respectfully,
Philippe

Just a note for our group. Ryan will going to qual in single and case this week
with the SCA. I personally think he will do well. But if you wish to send him a
note he is in the member section.

Also, both Ryan and Tricia will be study to take the LHA marshal test. I think
both will do well. Since we restructured and Tricia and I are offically equals
in the household we have had a few voids. Ryan has agreed to help by being out
fencing officer. I will be adding him to the officer list in the next day or
two. Thank you for your service Ryan.

Everyone is welcome, but under stand personal protective gear is required for
all men and encouraged for women. Protective gear is supplied by the user. All
actually training must be 18 and prepared to provide proof if asked.

We will work out a loaner gear policy as the group grows as what we have is
limited.

We will also be having a buckler workshop for this Sunday. Each person is
required to bring their own materials. We have a shop with a table band saw and
much of the wood working tools needed. If you want to make a metal buckler we
are limited on tools. We will making 16 – 18" round bucklers, you may bring
whatever wood you wish but remember the heavier the wood the heavier the
buckler. You can get pretty much all your materials at Lowes or Home Depot.
They have 2 ft x 2 ft sheets of plywood or hard wood laminate, you will also
need handles. Many will use the old style garage door handles and you need to
consider what to use along the outer ridge. Depending on the trim will decide
what you use to secure that trim; nails, glues etc. We will help you drawn out

The last month I have been thinking of how people think being a hollywood pirate
is an excuse for bad behavior. It has kind of made me wonder if I want to
connected with the pirate image. Since many of us have family and or not looking
to an excuse to get blind drunk every week I wonder if we should write more of a
code of what FTMS should be versus the drunk, lieing and stealing image they are
now have.

Share your thoughts, If we write a code and you give no input then you cannot
complain later.

I have been giving some thought to this as well and their those(who are not in our household) that will use piracy as an excuse for bad behavior however there are still those who share in the code that there is honor among pirates and rogues. I tend to believe in this code and the rules that are in it. Those in our household that I know attend regular functions hold to this code. We are not a house of drunken thieves, pirates and rogues. Do some of use over indulge in spirits ? sometimes. has anyone ever given us cause in the last year to rethink our own code I think not. Rules for safety of the household members is a good idea but if you are comparing our behavior to the code of others you will see our household members are within the code. Just because other do not want to follow the way of honor does not mean our members will follow suit. Someone has to set bar for others to reach for and if we are setting the bar and they don't want to reach then that is on them. We only hope that those within our household will gently correct those that they see outside the code and bring them around.

Again these are my thoughts and opinions

There is a BSA demo for Fergus's pack in Attleboro Monday night. I know this
gives you no notice, but the BSA is the best program out there for boys and
Fergus is a friend to us and always stepping up for his Barony. It would be
great for us to make the effort and show him our support. Tricia and I will be
there to represent FTMS and Tricia is trying to get more.

If you can, please come out in grab and be ready to put on a good show. We will
be bringing our fencing gear and dombeks.

Just taking a moment to thank Fergus for the invite to the demo last night. We
had a great time. The pack was awesome and it was great to see all our SCA
friends. Yes Fred you looked good out there and Collin was very smooth with the
blade. Fergus you will now always be Silly Mike to me. ļ The support crew
that came to support the fighters and add to the atmosphere completed the
package. Without them it would have been just some smelly people fighting. FTMS
will be doing more demos as we move forward and looking forward to it. I just
don¡¦t understand how Fred got Dairy Queen and I didn¡¦t.

Subject: Fencers, a question of personal safety
lordp218
Send Email Send Email

This weekend I had time with friends and I noted one of them was wearing a
leather collar for lack of better terms. Please understand this is not
acceptable in the LHA. Thus this is why I am only posting this on LHA boards.
In fact it now appears the LHA is taking a harder line on personal safety then
other organizations. The LHA still holds the line on rigid protection around the
neck. If I had hit that person in the throat they would have gotten seriously
hurt. Safety remains the top concern, not cost, what is popular or what looks
good.

I know this might not be a popular statement, but as a fencer do not depend on
Marshals (that includes me as a LHA Qualifying Marshal) to be as safe as you
can. Use common sense and know the rules yourself. Even if the rule is grey,
question if you would be at risk. In this case is the item you are wearing hard
enough to absorb a blow? If it flexes then the answer should be it is not safe
enough. Is it covering all your neck? That includes height.

Most of us are out there to have fun, if I get hurt because I do not have the
proper gear my fun ends real fast. If I hurt someone because they were not
wearing the proper gear my fun ends along with their fun.

Fencing is on for this Sunday. Same time and place. We will also be starting a
persona workshop. I encourage new and old to come out as many are actually new
on this topic and can learn from anyone. We are working towards re-enactor
level personas so this may be on going workshop for the spring and summer. We
are also talking to a very good living history society group and they want to
help us in this area.

We keep being asked "can I come and watch" and the answer is yes. There is no
charge. We have room for people to have workshops and fencing. Also if you wish
you can bring something to put on the BBQ as we will always have the fire on.
But if you wish to bring grease soaked burgers from the local fast food that is
ok too.

5/15 Fencing & persona

Future workshops;
Rubber Band Guns (RBGs)
Historical Garb making
Historical game making & playing
Glass Blowing (Classes of six)
Fiber swords

Hello household, for a period we will be having brief household meetings on
Sundays while fencing and workshops are going on. If you are looking you will
notice minor changes on the yahoo board and facebook group page moving forward.
We continue to move more towards a historical re-enactment group. This in no way
means we are breaking from the SCA or any other group, but the active members
have talked and we want to focus more on being historically correct pirates. To
set us apart from other not so accurate groups and re-enactment groups. We will
be very actively recruiting for people who wish to seriously study pirates from
the 1600s back. We are also working towards doing historical demos involving all
aspects of life for pirates during this time line. We have already received an
invite by the BSA to make a presentation of what we will be doing and the
founder and leader of the Rhode Island Pirate Players (RIPP) has offered to help
us any way he can. So as you can see we have a more focused direction and hope
you will join us and get involved.

Tricia and I received an e-mail on this topic today and I know Tricia IM'ed the
person directly, but I thought if there are questions then I need to be a bit
more clear. As mentioned we are not telling people to break from any group
including the SCA. But to our members who are merchants, please step back and
see the big picture, We are not telling you to not sell your wares, but we are
opening a new market for you. There is a huge demand for buttons and materials
re-enactors refer to "kits". Some of the things you sell can and will be of
interest to new people that will joining our group. For you that have known me
when running SCA events I have always been a big supporter of good vendors. As
we grow and develop that will not change and when I can I will keep you in the
loop of events and openings for you to sell your products. Our decision to move
towards more historial re-actments was something the small group of active
members thought would be a good direction for the group.

Remember we are fencing and meeting every Sunday for the most part and each
member is welcome to come and be involved in the conversation. I hope this makes
our mission clearer and that no one feels pushed out or not welcome.

Philippe

This is a FYI, any questions or comments can be sent directly to Tricia or I.
Thanks

We are a household of re-enactors and merchants based in the Southeastern MA and
RI area, but not limited to this area. We have members in the Eastern
Kingdom(SCA) and the Kingdom of Coventry: Castillian Fin De La Banda, (Living
History)and other various groups. Our members and merchants are from different
areas of interest. As Fortress Three Monkey Skulls we are developing an group
of historially accurate re-enactors for the 1400 - 1600 pirate way of life. We
also are developing fencing using the LHA fencing rules as our guidelines. Our
goal is to develop historial correct personas in the 1400 - 1600s for fun and
educational purpose. We welcome all who want to live and teach all aspects of
life this time line. We will be doing Demos and educational programs as we grow.
If you are a history buff and wish to be involved drop the Master
(lordp218@...) or the Mistress (ladys218@...) of the Household a
note..
