GENERAL POSITION
DESCRIPTION:
Under the direction of the Project Leader of the North East Texas Ecosystem
Project (NETEP), the Wildlife Biologist performs professional planning,
management, and research duties associated with wildlife and habitat resources
on Cooper Wildlife Management Area and other Wildlife Management Areas
(WMA’s) within the NETEP. Responsible for managing and enhancing
wetland, prairie and bottomland hardwood ecological systems with associated
flora and fauna. Provides technical assistance and public outreach programs to
the general public, landowners/land managers, sportsmen, and new
constituencies. Prepares research proposals and conducts wildlife and habitat
research relevant to the Post Oak Savannah and Blackland Prairie eco-regions of
WORKING CONDITIONS:
(1)
Required to work from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday; (2)
Required to work hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with days off other
than Saturday, Sunday and holidays, as needed; (3) Required to travel in-state
or out-of-state with possible overnight stays; (4) Required to operate a state
vehicle; (5) Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather
conditions; (6) Required to perform work in water-based field activities,
including work aboard various types of boats and; (7) Non-smoking environment
in State buildings and vehicles.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduation from an accredited
college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Wildlife Biology,
Wildlife Management, or related biological field with major coursework, 24
hours minimum, in Wildlife Management.
Experience: (1) NRS I: No experience
required; (2) NRS II: One year relevant experience. Acceptable Substitutions: Relevant
Master’s degree or Ph.D. may be substituted for experience requirements.
License/Certifications:
Must
possess or be able to obtain, within thirty days of employment, a valid class
“C” Texas driver’s license. NOTE:
Retention of position is contingent on obtaining and maintaining required
license.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
Knowledge, Skills
and Abilities: NRS I-II: (1) Knowledge of the basic life history, ecology,
and management needs of wildlife species indigenous to the Post Oak Savannah
and Blackland Prairie ecological regions with particular emphasis relating to
public lands; (2) Knowledge of basic land use practices and their impacts on
wildlife species and habitats; (3) Knowledge of wetland, forest and native
grassland habitat types and associated management techniques; NRS I-II (4) Skill in conducting
conservation outreach programs; (5) Skill in communicating clearly, both
verbally and in writing, on a broad range of fish, wildlife and habitat issues;
(6) Skill in collecting and analyzing scientific data; (7) Skill in using
personal computers with a working knowledge of MS Office software including Word,
Excel, Access and Powerpoint; (8) Skill in the application of common habitat
enhancement techniques; (9) Skill in infrastructure development and
maintenance; NRS II (10) Skill in operating Geographic Information
