Heather;

Clayton could help us with this quesiton; but I know for us flatwater paddlers we usually just all agree on a place and meet there.  I believe the WW paddlers when going in a group must complete certain paperwork and sign waivers etc..... and have a qualified group leader.

Clayton, I don't know who's leading the flatwater paddlers now (Todd?), but maybe you could help explain the procedure ( if there is one).....

Since I am new to this whole site and paddling, can someone explain what exactly we need to do when "planning" a trip?

My gf and I have paddled on Jocaseee and Robinson several times. Both very nice. While we were on Jocassee we were able to see the Bald Eagle as well as other wild life. Pulled over on a little cove and made us a nice stir fry lunch and then got back to paddling.

TAKE ACTION!

Call Governor Mark Sanford Today and
Tell Him What You Think!
(803) 734-2100

Governor Mark Sanford announced on March 20th that he will not request the $700
million of the federal stimulus dollars allocated for South Carolina since the
White House denied his request to use these funds to pay down our state's debt.
The final deadline for requesting the federal dollars is Friday, April 3rd.
More than one billion dollars has already been cut from our state's budget:

Already, the SC Conservation Bank, our only statewide program to protect family
farms, historic places, and natural areas, will not receive funding due to
across-the-board cuts.
Already, the Scenic Rivers Program that protects the Ashley, Black, Broad, Pee
Dee, Saluda, and Lynches Rivers has been zeroed out in the current budget of the
SC Department of Natural Resources.
Already, DHEC has been forced to eliminate the Dam Safety and Navigable Water
Permit Review Programs and the State of the Coast Reporting and Ocean Planning
efforts. DHEC's testing of wastewater effluent systems and oversight and clean
up of contaminated sites are now in jeopardy.
Already, DHEC's Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management has lost 11
positions. Further cuts in the Environmental Quality Control Program would
reduce wetlands/water quality impact reviews by 25% and require the agency to
waive review of many Water Quality Certifications. The biological health of
streams may not be assessed, and the ability to monitor mercury levels in fish
as it relates to human health consumption could be reduced.

Already DNR -- the agency charged with managing South Carolina's natural
heritage, water and wildlife habitat -- has been cut.

Yesterday, the Senate Finance Committee prepared an alternative budget without
the disputed stimulus dollars and reduced DHEC's base budget by another $8.2
million dollars and DNR by an additional $1.5 million. Please call the Governor
today and tell him that protection of South Carolina's land, air and water state
is at stake.

Clayton, nice job of describing the duties of leading a trip. Remember that
those duties can be split up as well, ie: one person does the coordinating while
another is the "experienced boater" for the run. Sharing makes it more fun too.

We packed a small single burner stove, steak, veggies, and basmati rice. When we had paddled for awhile and were hungry, we found a little cove and pulled on in.

We have a great time. I also take my little dog in his PFD.

We packed a small single burner stove, steak, veggies, and basmati rice. When we had paddled for awhile and were hungry, we found a little cove and pulled on in.

We have a great time. I also take my little dog in his PFD.

Great;  So we have Heather from Greenville with 2-3 people, and Don and me (in Central near Clemson).  Do you all want to plan a trip this weekend??  Maybe Jocassee?   I'm not a "leader" and am probably not qualified to "lead", but have been on Jocassee quite a few times. I'll help organize.... .  Let me know what you all think about a short 3-4 hour trip on Jocassee this weekend if the weather holds up.

Coordinating a trip is easy.

First, pick a place & date.
Pick your favorite! It's your trip, so do it the way you want it done! Make sure you pick a section of water that you know very well, have paddled many times, and and is well within your paddling ability.

Then let our vice-president know about it and give him the contact info you want trip attendees to use.
Our current vice-president is Todd Demianich and you can email him through this Yahoo group.

The trip is announced in the newsletter, on the online calendar, and usually posted about on this list as well.

Then people will contact you and ask to come on your trip.
This is where the "art" of trip leading really starts.
If someone calls that you don't know, learn about them. Find out if they have any special medical needs or bad allergies. Find out what they've paddled and try to figure out if the trip will be easy for them or a challenge or too much of a challenge. If you're not comfortable leading them down, tell them not this time. Make sure they have appropiate gear.

Keep in mind the whole group. If you're comfy on the Lower Green and you have 5 first timers call you and no one else, you probably want to tell at least some of those people that the trip's full. But if 5 first timers call and you've already got a couple buddies who paddle harder things every weekend signed up, then managing 5 first timers is probably not a problem.

Keep in mind the run. The Lower Green's roadside. So are many of our local runs: the Nanty, the Ocoee, Big Laurel, Lower Big Creek, etc.  Some have railroad tracks running their length: French Broad section 9, Nolichucky Gorge.  Some are pretty inaccessible: all of the Chattooga.  You've got a lot more flexibility with the roadside runs. If someone's having a bad day, they get out and chill until the group picks them up later. But on wilderness runs like the Chattooga once someone puts on, they're committed. Keep your new boater-to-experienecd boater ratio closer to 1:1 on these runs.

There's lots of other things that are nice for trip coordinators to do:
 - have a safety talk at the putin making sure everyone knows about foot entrapment, strainers, and paddle signals.
 - carry a first aid kit
 - carry safety gear like a rope, first aid kit, pin kit
 - know alternative access points to the run in case someone needs to take out early

The most important part is setting yourself up for success.
Pick a place you know and are comfy.
Limit the trip size and the "experienced boater" to "new boater" ratio to where you're comfortable.

I just updated the online calendar THEN read the posts from earlier today. I
have added two flatwater trips Russ is coordinating on April 25 and May 16. I
also clarified that my April 25 trip could be anywhere. Really, anything from a
scenic flatwater trip up to class III white water. I'll try and know a week
before.

Coordinating a trip and not sure how??
This is fuzzy so pay attention!
In the newsletter each month is this paragraph:
"FPC Trip Rules:
Remember trip coordinators are volunteers. Please be courteous, call a minimum
of 2 days prior to the trip to get on the roster. Trip coordinators have the
right to limit the trip participants and numbers as they choose. Offer to
assist in any way you can to make the trip go easier. If you have signed up,
show up or call to cancel before the coordinator leaves to head to the gathering
spot. Be prepared to sign a waiver acknowledging risks and relieving the
coordinators and Foothills Paddling Club, Inc. of liability if you get injured."

That said. All "sanctioned" FPC trip coordinators must have all participants
sign the club waiver. Pick-up trips, such as those that are born online, are
not held to the same standard. They are not advertised on both the online forum
and our printed newsletter, River Rumors. We keep this forum open to anyone
(except the very few who have been banned) and limit our moderation. It is a
great place where folks can find other folks to boat with. Membership in the
Foothills Paddling Club is not required.

Membership in the club has its advantages. Look for the membership form in the
files section. Dues are $15 per year.

It is important that anyone boating with anyone else anywhere (in the club or
not) understand that WE ARE ALL A GROUP OF COMMON ADVENTURERS....

We've got a release of liability form that everyone's supposed to sign for all club sponsored trips (whitewater, flatwater, exscursions to Disneyland, horseshoes, whatever).
It's just some routine legal protection for the club and all club members.

It doesn't have to be signed on routine "non-official" pickup trips that start out on this list, but feel free to use it if you like. It releases the club and all members of liability, so if you're a member and someone you've never met from the list wants to come on some trip having them sign the form might be a good idea.

There's a copy in the "FPC Forms" folder in the "Files" section of the site:

GREENSBORO — Mercer Oast passed way in Virginia on Saturday, March 28, 2009.
He and a dear friend were whitewater kayaking, one of many sports at which
he excelled, and thus Mercer went to his Maker doing something he absolutely
loved.

A celebration of Mercer Oast's life will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 1,
at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home on North Elm Street.

Mercer adored his wife, Sharon and daughters Katherine and Courtney, and
thoroughly approved of his son-in-law, Mark,

Mercer's friends knew that, every day of his life, he wondered how he'd been
blessed to marry the most beautiful, intelligent and most fun girl in the
whole town-whom he'd met when both were all of 15 years old.

Mercer wholeheartedly lived life to its fullest which, in his case, included
skydiving, motorcycling, anything involving being on or in the water,
backpacking, hiking, skydiving and fly fishing. Except for skydiving, Sharon
took part or, at the very least, rode shotgun. Mercer also believed sailing
and racing the Mobjack sailboat was the most fun one could have at six mph.

When found at home, Mercer was usually practicing Sawdust Therapy in his
woodshop. He created such magnificent pieces as the family dining table, his
and Sharon's bed, standup jewelry boxes for each of his daughters, and
numerous gorgeous items not just for his own home but for those of others. A
recent addition to Facebook, Mercer was truly, as he states on his home
page, a Renaissance Man.

Born in Portsmouth, Va., Mercer grew up traveling the Chesapeake Bay with
family and friends. At Atlantic Christian College, he was president of Sigma
Phi Epsilon, which Mercer proudly stated as fact was the model for Animal
House.

A commercial loan officer at Carolina Bank, which he proudly proclaimed The
Best Bank in North Carolina, Mercer stated, "a good work environment
influences people to be more productive, and that humor goes a long way to
lighten the load." In fact, humor and unconditional love-not necessarily in
that order-were the bywords of Mercer's life.

The same attitude applied to Gate City Rotary, where he was a proud Paul
Harris Fellow.

Sharon and the girls request that, in lieu of flowers, friends and family
make donations to either Gate City Rotary, The American Red Cross, or any
charity that has meaning to you-because that, to Mercer, was much more
important than dictating where donations should be sent, or than flowers
other than those he passed while kayaking or hiking.

Offer condolences at www.news-record.com/obituaries

I'll help organize.... .  Let me know what you all think about a short 3-4 hour trip on Jocassee this weekend if the weather holds up.

It is in Greer, managed by CPW and cost 3.00 to go on the lake unless you have a season pass which is 35.00. I always buy a pass each year as it is not too far to travel and gets me on the water.
