                                         Campaign against Climate Change

Is the government failing us on climate change  ?

Public Meeting, Thursday November 6th

7.00 pm at the Friends House, 173 Euston Road (opposite Euston Station)

With

George Monbiot  campaigning environmental author and journalist

Zac Goldsmith  editor of the “Ecologist” magazine and environmental advisor to the Tory Party

Bob Crow  General Secretary of the National Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers Union (RMT)

Ann Pettifor  Director of Advocacy International and a founder of the Jubilee 2000 campaign

Phil Thornhill    National Coordinator of the Campaign against Climate Change

Under this government CO2 emissions have increased (2% by the middle of last year) and we have seen plans for the expansion of Heathrow and other airports and for the building of a new wave of coal-fired power stations - the first in 30+ years - starting with Kingsnorth in Kent. Meanwhile measures have been introduced that will increase the use of biofuels that accelerate deforestation, a major cause of climate change. But many see what the government is NOT doing as the biggest problem – there is simply no grasp of the real immensity and urgency of the threat to shape the radical and audacious policies that we need.  Even judged by the standards of many European countries, for instance, Britain lags in the production of renewable energy, when we should have been seeing a huge investment in this field.

Meanwhile the arctic ice has shrunk to a record low and for the first time methane has been detected leaking from the arctic ocean floor. These frightening changes that we see taking place around us in the physical world do not respond to green soundbytes and will not dissapear in the face of token or half hearted green measures.

Is the government failing us (and the world !) on climate change ? If so just how badly ?

And what  should the government be doing ?

Come and listen to our exciting and diverse panel give their views and then ask them your own questions.

Don’t miss this opportunity !

NATIONAL  CLIMATE  MARCH 2008

SATURDAY DECEMBER 6TH

Part of a Global Day of Action on climate, see  www.globalclimatecampaign.org  - last year 70+ countries were involved.

MARCH ON PARLIAMENT for the climate

The march this year goes to Parliament Square to demand that the government act now on climate.

Starts at 12 noon at Speakers Corner, Hyde Park

Climate protest bike ride starts from Lincoln's Inn Fields at 10.30 am: and joins start of march later.  See  http://www.campaigncc.org/bikeride.shtml   .

Speakers will include Nick Clegg MP (leader, Liberal Democrat Party), Michael Meacher MP(ex-environment minister) Caroline Lucas MEP (leader, Green party), and George Monbiot.

For info about coaches or other transport from around the country to the march see http://www.campaigncc.org/local.html

To download the leaflet for the National March go to  http://www.campaigncc.org/resources.shtml

The March on Parliament has four main themes -
1) NO to a 3rd runway at Heathrow and the runaway expansion in aviation expansion.
2) NO new coal - no new coal-fired power stations as planned at eg Kingsnorth in Kent
3) NO to the expansion of agrofuels - with negative impacts on forests, the climate and world food supply.
4) YES to a renewable energy revolution and green jobs
Come with your own banners, costumes etc on one of these themes (if you fancy !) and join up with others pushing that theme......
The March on Parliament for the Climate marks the Saturday midway through the UN Climate Talks in Poznan, Poland and we make our demands on the UK government in solidarity with the world's poorest and most vulnerable communities that will suffer worst and most immediately from climate change caused overwhelmingly by the rich long-industrialised countries..

We need the government to act now on climate, to stop building coal-fired power stations and new runways - and to begin the renewable energy revolution. We need a tidal wave of people outside parliament to make them act to stop climate catastrophe now ! Be part of that tidal wave, be there ! Next year may be too late.

Why  so critical now ? See     http://www.campaigncc.org/whynow.shtml

Well done on this Fiona.

Can I repeat: if we want Mischa Borris to ask a question at the Council meeting she needs to know precisely what we want her to ask. Personally, I'm a little unclear with regard to the Council meeting, so could someone who's more in the know oblige please. Or at least ideas.

Re transporting the sofa -  I think Hackney Cyclists have a trailer which is big enough to transport a sofa. They might be persuaded to help. We'd have to offer them some kind of recompense....

Hi there,

Back in the summer - probably at Climate Camp - you signed up to be part
of the rolling blockade of Kingsnorth if E.ON gets permission to build a
new coal power station there. Well so far, they haven't - but they're
still on track to get it, so planning for the blockade is still full
steam
ahead. This is a quick update on where it's at - hope you've still got
your return ticket!

1) DECISION TIME: BRADFORD GATHERING THIS WEEKEND
2) 48 HOURS OF ACTION AGAINST E.ON AND NEW COAL
3) UPDATE ON KINGSNORTH DEVELOPMENTS

******************************************

1) DECISION TIME: BRADFORD GATHERING THIS WEEKEND

At September's Camp for Climate Action gathering in Manchester we got
started on deciding how we're going to organise the blockade, as well as
what else Climate Camp is going to do next. One thing that came out of
it
was that E.ON's student recruitment tour has been targeted around the
country (see below).

In Bradford this weekend, 8 and 9 November, it's decision time: we're
going to agree the name of the blockade, decide on what form it's going
to
take, and set up all the working groups to get it rolling. Some of the
names that have been suggested? The E.ON Face Off. The Great Coal
Scuttle.
Operation Stop Coal. Think you can do better? Send us your ideas via
process@... before Saturday, and we'll add them to the
discussion.

Everyone's invited to the Bradford gathering, which is the national
decision-making space for the Climate Camp. For full details including
the
agenda for the weekend, how to get there, and the content of the
proposals, see http://www.climatecamp.org.uk/drupal-5.7/?q=node/471.

******************************************

2) 48 HOURS OF ACTION AGAINST E.ON AND NEW COAL

In Manchester we also decided to hold a day of action against E.ON
before
the year was out. This has now become 48 hours of action against E.ON
and
new coal - and we'd love it if you can forward this callout to your
networks (as well as take part!):

**48 HOURS OF ACTION AGAINST E.ON AND NEW COAL**
Friday 28th and Saturday 29th November 2008

The UK Government is calling for an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by
2050, we are calling for 48 hours of action against E.ON and new coal
NOW.

It's easy enough to set a target that's 42 years away, but we don't
stand
a rapidly melting snowball's chance of achieving it if the government
give
the green light to new coal fired power stations (7 are in the planning
stages, with E.ON's new Kingsnorth being first up) and keep dishing out
subsidies to new coal mines. Coal is the dirtiest fuel there is, so
while
the government continues with business-as-usual through the last 100
months we have to make a difference on climate change, we call for 48
hours of action against new coal - now!

Join us in saying 'No to New Coal': get your friends together and plan
an
action for your area. Go stickering, blockading, serving direct action
warning notices at supply chain premises, organise an awareness raising
talk, hang a banner, get creative on the streets, the options are
endless.
Get together, get creative, and plan an action!

On Friday you could visit the Coal Authority, E.ON offices, UK Coal
offices or Global Coal Management offices, to name but a few. Or take
aim
at their investors or parts of their supply chain. On the Saturday you
could take action at 2nd round FA Cup matches sponsored by E.ON.
Together,
we'll raise awareness about killer coal, and we'll say loud and clear
that
we won't stand for new coal - at Kingsnorth or anywhere else.

For more information visit - http://www.e-onf-off.org.uk/ - where a list
of potential targets, action ideas and plenty of resources will follow
shortly.

This day of action is supported by The Camp for Climate Action, Rising
Tide, Plane Stupid, Campaign against Climate Change and others.

******************************************

3) UPDATE ON KINGSNORTH DEVELOPMENTS

E.ON haven't yet been given the go-ahead to build at Kingsnorth, but we
know we can't usually rely on the Government to do anything but what
corporations want. E.ON (not to mention the rest of the coal industry)
is
still moving full steam ahead with their profit-grabbing,
climate-destroying plans at Kingsnorth, so we have to be ready to stop
them if and when permission is given. Here's what's been happening in
relation to Kingsnorth over the last couple of months:

* GREENPEACE SIX GET OFF: The trial of six Greenpeace activists in
September accused of causing criminal damage at Kingnorth caused a
sensation as they were acquitted by a jury. They had climbed the chimney
at Kingsnorth last October to write 'Gordon, Bin It' down the side, and
they argued the property damage was necessary to prevent greater damage
caused by burning coal. A jury of ordinary people from Kent agreed - and
direct action was vindicated. Read all about it here:
http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/blog/climate/kingsnorth-trial-breaking-news
-verdict-20080910

* COAL ACTION NETWORK SET UP: Also in September a gathering under the
banner Leave It in the Ground took place in Manchester and agreed to set
up the Coal Action Network - to support collective action against coal
exploitation in the UK. From the website: "Climate change is the biggest
threat facing us, and burning coal is the biggest historical cause of
climate change. Every day more coal is burned, yet industry and
government
seem intent on burning even more. 33 new opencast coalmines and six coal
fired power stations are at the planning stage in the UK alone. The Coal
Action Network and this website is a growing network of people &
resources
resisting coal in the UK." To get involved, visit
http://leaveitintheground.org.uk/

* E.ON MOBBED ON STUDENT RECRUITMENT TOUR: Unsuspecting E.ON graduate
recruits have spent the last few weeks touring the universities of the
country trying to persuade today's students to follow in their footsteps
-
and found themselves repeatedly assailed by E.ON F.OFF memorabilia.
Their
display stand - 'Tackling climate change isn't something that's tacked
onto our agenda - it's at the heart of what we do' - was neatly
subvertised on matching leaflets headed 'Causing climage change'
instead.
In Liverpool, protesters delivered bags of coal to E.ON's stall and
dropped an 'E.ON No New Coal' banner from a balcony inside the hall. In
Manchester, a Leave It In the Ground flashmob broke out in the careers
fair, targeting E.ON and E.ON funders the Royal Bank of Scotland. And at
Imperial College in London, leafleters in E.ON F.OFF tshirts made such
an
impression that E.ON didn't return for day two. To help plan further
E.ON
fun join the Target E.ON email list: send a blank message to
targeteon-subscribe@....

* JOHN HUTTON TAKEN OFF THE CASE: We know that many of us are skeptical
that the endless contortions of the state apparatus have any real
ability
to bring about a more sustainable future... But FYI, everyone's
favourite
big business stooge, John Hutton - the minister previously responsible
for
the decision about Kingsnorth - was moved to the Ministry of Defence in
October's government reshuffle. A new Department for Energy and Climate
Change was also created, run by Ed Miliband, who is reported to be less
rabidly pro-dirty coal - not that difficult for someone who isn't John
Hutton. But while it might appear to be more 'joined-up' for the
Government to think about climate change and energy in the same
building,
that doesn't mean that the building won't just churn out the same old
suicidal decisions on climate change. So, it's not time to hang up your
direct action boots just yet!

Dear supporter,

Our meeting tonight will be at 8pm at the NOBODY INN on the Southeast corner of Newington Green itself. Map Please let me know whether you are intending to come, so that we can give them an idea of numbers. Thanks and looking forward to seeing you later.

Events in the US today have shown that fear, distrust and ignorance can be overcome. We are fighting the same things - but positive change IS possible. So let's celebrate this moment in history and together make it happen.

Best wishes, Orlando

Are we having a re-energising meeting? (maybe I've missed something).

I could offer my place for the venue again (and I have a sofa now....).

I reckon it would be good to do something, but I don't know how FoE
feel about us mobbing EON offices etc.? And some group members might
not be so keen on anything resembling direct action?

Is there another local group in London that we could join in with on
28th or 29th, which would also mean less organising on our part...?

I don't think groups doing direct action would be covered by FoE's insuranceor

Also I think FoE deliberately distinguishes itself as an organisation that does

PS what I was trying to say is that FoE's legitimacy and reputation rests on the
fact that it stays within the law. I'm not saying that anyone who gets involved
in the direct action will necessarily break the law, but just that it's better
not to do it in the name of FoE. Don't mean to sound pompous - that's just how I
understand it. David and Jo...correct me if I'm wrong..

hope this helps

I wasn’t suggesting direct action! I know well that it’s not our thing.

We do however do stunts so I was more thinking of awareness raising rather than anything illegal. Coz it is something that we support.

I’m away then anyway.

I don't think groups doing direct action would be covered by FoE's insurance or that FoE would provide legal back-up (as Greenpeace do). Members of the group would have to act as individuals, or as members of another organisation.

Also I think FoE deliberately distinguishes itself as an organisation that does legal lobbying and research etc, respecting the fact that others in the green movement who use direct action tactics.

Hope that helps and makes sense!

I reckon it would be good to do something, but I don't know how FoE

Is there another local group in London that we could join in with on

I have the wall at home. If you can make seeing Meg, you might have to pick the wall up off me from home tonight or from Underwood Street tomorrow (off Jules, not me – I won’t be in). Let me know.

Meg's surgery on Monday between 10-12 midday? I know it's normal work

I wasn’t suggesting direct action! I know well that it’s not our thing.

We do however do stunts so I was more thinking of awareness raising rather than anything illegal. Coz it is something that we support.

I’m away then anyway.
