This past weekend 9 boats participated in the SSA Snipe Fall Series.
Saturday started out with a nice 15 knot breeze. Joining us on the race
course were Lasers and Comets. The Comets did not want to sail all the
way out to area A and convinced the RC to setup a course in the harbor.
So the snipes joined the comets for some short course windward - leeward
racing.
We got in 3 races in relatively shifty conditions. Fortunately the wind
moderated over the day and the racing turned out to be really great.
Despite only having a handful of boats, overlaped boats where common at
many of the marks. Jon Anthony teemed up with Russ Wesdyk, and Marshall
Caggiano trained new crew Jeannetta Johnson. While Mark Furhman had
Annelise Striz on board and I sailed with Jill Williamson. At the end
of day that was the reverse order of boats. Greg Kelly and Jon Virden
also spend some time on the water practicing in the heavy air (but
relatively warm water).
For Sunday everything was different. The wind had shifted 180 degrees
and dropped to under 10 knots and we sailed in Area A. Brian and Amy
Hetherington along with Chris and Jake Ryan joined in the fun. Jon
Anthony was replaced by Russ' daughter Katie who drove the entire day
while Russ crewed. Katie did an amazing job!
After 5 races spread out over 2 days, Mark ended up in third, Marshall
in 2nd and somehow we were 1st at the end of the weekend. Full results
are posted on the SSA website.
Thanks to everyone who made it out on the water, it appeared everyone
had a good time. And don't forget the last Annapolis Snipe event of the
season, the Frigid Digit is this weekend.
