here, MsL.... There's a lot of mis information there in
your description!

A fireworks shell can be
either cylindrical or spherical, and is usually made
with paper or plastic half-spheres, filled with cut or
extruded stars (the pellets you wrote about) that are made
from a wide variety of chemical mixtures. These
different mixtures create the different colors in the
bursts.

Some shells may have inert pellets (likely clay) to
create special effects such as the ring shapes. Most
shells are completely filled with pyrogenic stars,
though.

A burst charge of black powder (usually)
is added to the shell and a time delay fuse allows
the shell to reach apogy prior to its' bursting to
create the effect desired.

The halves are
carefully assembled and pasted over with strips of paper
till they are of the correct diameter for the mortar
tube, which automatically creates the correct thickness
of shell allowing for maximum spread of the stars to
give best effects in the sky.

Furthermore, they
come in a wide variety of sizes. I have personally
fired shells of 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10 inches
diameter. I know of shells as large as 24 inches
diameter!

And we haven't even touched on salutes or
double,triple,or other multi-break shells yet....

>I

Miss L,

You might want to find a copy of
"Pyrotechnics" by Weingardt. It's almost a cookbook, but I have
to stress a couple things.

First, homemade
fireworks are much better known as BOMBS!!!!! They are
extremely dangerous unless you really know what you're
doing!

Second, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms
takes a very dim view on folks building explosives of
ANY type without the proper licenses and without
following the laws which provide safety for both the
manufacturer and others who are not concerned with the
manufacture.

The book should be considered as being for
educational purposes only!!! And stay away from Anarchist's
Cookbooks and that ilk. Many of those books have not only
incorrect formulas, but truly DANGEROUS ones!

My
best to you!

BrwMeistr9
Specific Impulse

I'd suggest doing a search on-line for it,
perhaps at amazon.com or barnes & noble's page. I got my
copy years and years ago, so I don't remember where it
came from.

G'luck, be safe!

BrwMeistr9

Hundreds Injured In Firecracker
Fiesta

ELX, Spain (Reuters) - Nearly 250 people were injured
in a traditional firecracker battle in the
southeastern Spanish town of Elx, state radio reported
Saturday.

Most of the injuries were slight, but a dozen people
were admitted to hospital in the early hours of
Saturday morning with serious burns and one man suffered
burns on 70 percent of his body after a firecracker
ignited his clothes, the report said.

The annual
battle was part of the celebrations culminating in the

The KGB SKYSHOW is THE BEST fireworks display in
thw whole world. Even better than the 4th of July
celebrations. 101 KGB FM (the best station in SD)in San Diego
has put together The KGB SKYSHOW for 25 straight
years. It is done at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego after
the San Diego Padres Baseball Game. And is a
tradition. This year was the best, over 28,000 shells in the
finally. It was so loud it made you pratically go deaf. It
is a huge pyrotechnic display played to Music
(classic Rock always with a theme to it) a laser light
show and also fireworks from inside the stadium. They
had a guy playing a piano with fireworks inside. As
he played, fireworks came out of the piano. Soon the
piano bursted open and an awesome display of fireworks
from the infield of the stadium erupted. The SKYSHOW
IS THE BEST.. YOU HAVE TO SEE IT TO BELIEVE IT.. IT
GETS BETTER EVERY YEAR....

im not much of a camera person, but i have found
that you can take good fireworks pics with a decent
autofocus camera if you wait till the finale or any other
time the display is so bright that the flash unit isnt
needed.went to the PGI convention last year and found that i
didnt need a flash most of the time-whew! i thought i
was going to get a sunburn from the better displays!

join the PGI(pyrotechnics guild international),go
to the convention next summer(in
plover, wisconsin),and see 3 displys a night for six nights, each better
than the last, all from 100 yards away. i guarantee you
will forget all about public displays!they even have
workshops to learn how to make your own display shells and
get licensed to do displays yourself.
