Hi Shellie,
Nice to meet you. I also have 2 children, ages 8 and 10. We have been
notebooking for a couple or years, mainly with History and Science
topics. I have some ideas for getting going with notebooks.
One of the things that helps us is to have a selection of different size
3 ring binders on hand in different colors. That way you can start off
a new study topic by having the children choose which color binder they
want and then make a cover page for it.
Another helpful thing is to purchase some downloadable /printable
notebooking pages that go along with topics you are intereste in
learning about - www.currclick.com <
http://www.currclick.com> has a
large selection of themed paper, and copywork. Westvon publishing is
one vendor that has a variety of themed pages for drawing and writing
about history and science. I find that these help us get going and
inspire us to document what we read about and is less intimidating than
a blank page for a younger child.
Other items that we include are original artwork, coloring pages,
scriptures or quotes, flyers or photos from field trips, and narrations
of books we have read (sometimes I type these as they dictate them).
The drawings or coloring pages are often made while I read aloud. Just
about everything they do for school goes into a notebook. At the end of
the year, we just bring the notebooks to our evaluation.
I am hoping that my children will eventually not need the prompting of
the printed notebooking pages and will be motivated to start their own
studies as they grow more confident with research and writing.

idea notebooking. We are building our History notebooks, but I would
like to notebook with other subjects. My 9yo is a struggling learner and
notebooking would be great for him. I just have a hard time getting
started. I hope to get some encouragement from this group.
