Thanks to Bruce for passing on the message below.  For those of you who have not known about Irene's health issues, I apologize for not getting word out sooner.  Irene has been sick for nearly 2 months now, having had intestinal surgery.  It's good to hear that she's finally doing better, but as Bruce indicates, she is very weak.  Georgeanne Vyverberg has visited her many times and has been keeping me informed.  Irene's friend, Lois has been here for several weeks helping out and visiting, but she has gone home to Arizona for a couple of weeks.  She does plan to return near the end of September.  I would encourage you to send a card to Irene at the address that Bruce listed below.  I hope to go visit her soon.

Friends,

I had the opportunity to stop by Strong Memorial in Rochester yesterday on my way home from the mountains. It was great to see Irene, and greater still to see the sparkle in her eyes. It seems her recovery is again on track. There's a long road ahead--progress is still literally being measured in inches--how many inches further away they can put the chair for Irene to get to from her bed. She still needs help getting the foil cover off the juice container; she doesn't yet have strength enough to clip her nails with clippers. But, as I said, there was a sparkle in her eyes and I saw the Irene we all know and love.

I don't know when she'll move to a rehab facility which is the next step, but will keep you informed. In the meantime, keep the encouragement coming. Her eyes danced when I asked about the conference card/photo we sent her--obviously a very good move on our part. Hospital address below.

I had the opportunity to visit Irene at Strong Memorial Hospital yesterday. As
reported by Bruce Matthews earlier in the week, she is beginning to make some
significant progress in her recovery, but she is still very weak from the long
ordeal. She says that she has lost most of her muscle tone, so she is gradually
getting to the point where she is getting up a little and beginning to walk a
little. That is difficult, but she says she sees great progress from a couple
of days ago. When I arrived, she was "missing." It seems that the nurse had
taken her outside to get some fresh air, which Irene enjoyed immensely. It is
unlikely that she will get home before the end of September as she still has a
good deal of physical therapy to go through yet. Her brother, Andy will be
arriving this weekend for a couple of weeks and after that her friend Lois will
be back. I think she would enjoy a visit from some of her friends, so if you
are in the Rochester area, please consider doing that. She is on the 6th floor
(use the red elevator). Look for suite 1400 and she is #21 (to the left of the
main desk).

Today (Saturday), Irene was in guarded condition again. I am guessing her lung collapsed again, but I am not sure. Jane Schryver in Dansville

What a surprise as I just talked to her and she was coming along quite well.

I saw Irene today.

No lung collapse.  The procedure they did –did not work.

She was being moved to a lower floor and out of intensive care today.

Spirits are up for the most part but she is very weak.

Larry Blumberg sent the below from the NY-NJ Trail Conference to several of us on Sept. 1 (emboldening is mine).  I just checked the NY-NJ TC website http://www.nynjtc.org/news/postirene-message-hikers-trail-maintainers and Larry's snippet has not been updated.  The snippet mentions the Trout Pond Trail, which is part of the FLT system on map M30 in the western Catskills.  I'd expect that all of the FLT system in the Catskills (maps M30 to M33) has suffered at least some blow down damage as in general Irene's damage was greater the further east you go.  I'd check the above link periodically for further updated information.

You can also check the NYS DEC website on Irene's damage periodically: http://www.dec.ny.gov/public/76659.html.

If you have further info please let us know.

I've copied and pasted this snippet from the NY-NJ Trail Conference report:

Good News: DEC visited Delaware Wild Forest and found no erosion damage.   The main damage is blowdown.  Beech Hill Rd, Barkaboom Rd., Mary Smith Rd., Holiday and Berry Brook, Beaver Kill Rd., Cat Hollow, Campbell Brk, Campbell Mtn, Jug Tavern, Morton Hill all clear with minor damage to the ditches.  DEC does not expect to find heavy erosion on the trails beyond what was there last Friday in those areas.  Bridges are in place.  A number of large blowdown did block the trail Trout Pond and Mud Pond, as they do along the trail to Huggins Pond. (TC Map 144)

After the Rain: Widespread and heavy damage to roads continues to be a serious obstacle to trail access and use, especially in the Catskills. You may need to reconsider holiday weekend plans at some destinations. Remember that many trails will pose new hazards, such as blowdowns and washed out stream crossings. See Post-Irene Trails Updates for the latest reports.

The Catskills: Damage in the Catskills is particularly severe and rescue efforts are continuing in many areas. Many trail heads are inaccessible (see above link for info).  The Trail Conference is lending its support to emergency relief efforts in the Catskills.

Had meant to write this note a couple weeks ago after having hiked past the FLT's eastern terminus in the Catskills, now I'm a bit concerned about road and trail damage in the immediate area following the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, so you might want to wait a couple more weeks before attempting any of these suggested additional hikes "beyond" the eastern terminus.

ok, we all know that the FLT "ends" on Map M33 at its junction with the Long Path, about a mile in from the Dening parking area in the southern Catskills.   But, please just don't stop and turn around there, consider these two ideas !

1) Turning 'right' (or south) onto the Long Path will take you over the summits of Table and Peekamoose, two of the 35 Catskill peaks which are over 3500 feet in elevation.  It's maybe 2.5 miles to Table from the FLT's end point, and then another mile more over to Peekamoose.  Viewpoints have recently been cut in on these summits, Table's viewpoint is to the right just before reaching the summit, while Peekamoose's viewpoint is to the left just after passing the summit.

2) Turning 'left' (or north) onto the Long Path will take you over to Slide Mtn, the highest (at approx 4200 feet) of the Catskill peaks.  One can make a nice loop hike up Slide by taking the Curtis-Ormsbee Trail up and the Slide Mtn Trail down.

Here's a link to a very rough map sketch depicting the Dening parking area, the Long Path, and the hikes up Table / Peekamoose and Slide Mtn
http://www.catskill-3500-club.org/included/maps/smw.htm

but 'real maps' are best purchased through the NY / NJ Trail Conference (Catskill Trails map set)

OK, I’m relatively new to the group, so I’ll bite: what is a “car spotter”? To me it sounds like a good natured soul who positions himself at trail road crossings in order to warn hikers of approaching cars.

Probably not what it means.

Car spotter system was established by Ed Sidote to assist hikers in completing the trail.

Members who live near (ish) the trail complete the form and agree to provide various levels of assistance.

-car spotter form explains it more fully.

Most folks sign up to meet a hiker(s) at an agreed upon spot of the trail.  Leave that vehicle and drop off the hiker(s) who then hike back to their own vehicle.

Thanks, pretty much what I figured.

BTW, some European cities have a free bicycle transportation system. Free bikes are distributed more or less uniformly around the city. If you need to bike to get somewhere you just take one of the free ones nearby and leave it off where you’re going. Assuming a random distribution of destinations, bike distribution remains uniform.

Now we could adapt this to FLT to do away with the need for “car spotters”.  Leave a free bike at every trail crossing. You take your car to the desired trailhead, hike to some road crossing, and bike back to your car (equipped with a bike rack of course.) Since you are a good citizen you return the bike to where you found it.

Problem: in US, bikes would quickly disappear.

no, you are right it is not.  it is someone you can call to drive you to one of the hike so you can leave your car at the other end.  you provide gas money.

OK, I’m relatively new to the group, so I’ll bite: what is a “car spotter”? To me it sounds like a good natured soul who positions himself at trail road crossings in order to warn hikers of approaching cars.

Probably not what it means.

Terry

Hi Jacqui!   I'm having trouble finding someone to hike Cortland series #3 with me.   I need this hike to complete the series.&nbs! p;  Would another option be to have someone spot me?   Let me know if this is possible.  Thanks.

received this attached NY Dept Env Conservation note from Paul Hoffman, the note says that the DEC is closing all trails on DEC lands in Ulster and Greene Counties in the Catskills due to the affects of Hurricane Irene...

(actually, I would have assumed trails in these two counties were already closed)

Thanks,

Hi Larry, here's something you may want to post. The DEC today closed all trails in these two counties on lands they control. I think that pretty much kills hiking in that area. For the FLT it means from Big Pond to Denning is effectively closed except for the few miles of road walk.

Correction: the second link below should have been www.511ny.org; "ny" was left out, but is now corrected.  In case you don't save this info it will be in Trail Conditions at the FLTC website (www.fingerlakestrail.org) under "General."

I visited Irene today.  Met her brother from Phoenix.

She is looking considerable better.  She is having physical therapy  and hopes to walk on her own soon,

(weak from so many days abed). She ate a small lunch.

We exchanged dog stories and she is very grateful to Lynda Rummel for taking her dogs on

‘vacation’.

Apparently several wonderful friends have lined up to assist her when she comes home…

Happily,

Jacqui

Thanks for the good news, Jacqui.  Her dogs miss her though they are generally happy here at puppy camp.  Lynda

Reports below from two who have recently hiked our eastern FLT Trails:

Map M23:

Just east of Elmer Jackson Rd. (mile 5.3) the NYS DEC this spring had posted a sign that the bridge was closed because of a gully next to the dam. The gully has now been repaired and the trail east of here is open. - Tim Davis

Map M31 - M32 (Catskills):

Hi Joe,
Officially trails are closed in Ulster and Greene Counties, so "hike at your own risk."
That said, on 9/13/2011, we hiked from Big Pond Rd to Balsam Lake Mountain. There were only a handful of
blowdowns and the trail was not affected at all by flooding. Except for the ever present stinging nettles, the trail was in very good
condition!
Per Bill Rudge, NYSDEC, "that area of the Catskills, Big Pond over to Balsam Mountain, was not as impacted by Irene as
other areas of Catskills. Flooding more likely to impact roads than trails themselves. Check with local highway departments and avoid areas where highway crews are currently working to make repairs".

Sarah Balduf

The following has been posted on FLTC Trail Conditions:

The FLT is closed until further notice from the trail crossing on Old 76 Road in Caroline NY (M18 mileage 9.5) to Level Green Road. From west to east: turn left (NW) on Old 76 Road for 0.9 mile, turn right (NE) on Yaple Road for 1.2 miles, and turn right (SE) on Level Green Road for 1.1 miles to FLT trail entrance on left side of road. This section is closed until further notice due to withdrawal of permission from a landowner. Please respect this and stay off of this section of trail. Note: the trail is still open from Level Green Road east for 0.9 mile until reaching the private land road section closed. - Paul Warrender & Joe Dabes

I'd be very surprised if a state park closed for hunting season. There are examples where the park is closed to hunting, but open for other uses: Green Lakes State Park is one. (The issue is a bit controversial around here.) If a park is open for hunting you could always pretend you're a hunter. A number of sections of the FLT are closed during hunting season because they are on private land, and the owner presumably wants the land available and safe for hunting.

That said, I don't feel particularly comfortable hiking on sections of the trail that go through active hunting areas even where it is explicitly allowed. Do people have suggestions of good options for the gun shy during the coming times of interspecies warfare? I know that Heiberg Forest is one example here in central new york, but it doesn't host any part of the FLT at present.

Terry
