Thanks Dave I have the book and after updating myself as per the contents on your site I see there is a section on roofing ideas which is just what I need right now for finishing off my Wicked Wandas build, weathering the roof. If I can’t find my book heck for $4.95 I’ll be doing the download, wish you would have had that setup years ago.

This is a commercial.

Modelers.
Over the years many of you have asked me about bringing back my book "222 Tips for Building Model Railroad Structures." I self-published the book in the 1980's and then Kalmbach Publishing took it over, changed the cover, and sold it for several years. It went out of print about 1990. I've revived it as an ebook due to demand.

All the kit and scratch-building tips are based on my 50 years of professional structure building. You get to read and learn the structure tips it took me years to prefect. The topics covered include: selecting the right tools, getting the most out of kit instructions, working with paper and wood, plastic tricks, using metal castings, building plaster structures, roofing ideas, painting techniques, weathering formulas, adhesives, and detailing your models.

Whether you're a beginner or expert, you'll benefit from this book. You can download the book as a PDF file that's about a 39MB. It has sixty-four pages with over 100 b/w photos. The cost is $4.95 and is available through my web site at www dot mrscenery dot com. Thanks.

Thanks Keevan
Well if I got you guys confused how do you think I feel LOL
This will be an occupied building with I hope lots of foot traffic. I suppose
being my first bar Mills kit it has been alot of experimenting to some what
extreme weathering but at the same time I'm now trying to bring it back to the
point where the building does need major cosmetic repairs but at the same time a
bit of trim painting with what mony is available still is drawing in the
customers GRIN.
Hope that represents my vision.

Lynn,

Since you seem to be taking your finished product to a finite level of ultimate personal satisfaction, I'll offer this observation as to its appearance at this time.

The siding would indicate a run-down neglected maintenance upkeep.  Somewhat towards an 'abandoned structure' condition.  The trimwork I'm seeing seems to be in a pristine condition that one would consider in conflict to the attention given to the rest of the structure.

The overriding question is, is the structure currently occupied, or abandoned?

I'm guessing that you have a end-game philosophy in mind that could explain this incongruence, could you enlighten us as to what it is?  For further opinions to be offered on our part.

All-in-all, you've been doing a remarkable job in applying ageing and weathering techniques to your model.  The overall impact of it is truly impressive.

Mike this is the first Bar Mills kit I've been working on and has been a more of
a learning curve than anything, the rest of my layout has many wooden dusty
buildings with many dirt roads, dated in the early 20's -late 30's so yes this
is the look I'm after. Then again its not done yet. :}

I take it that this building has no-one that going to be living in it, and it is about to be taken down or to fall down? Now if this was a cat house the building would be in great shape and not falling apart, because of all the money being made. A cat house was one of the better houses and would have been well taken care of, so that the people visiting the place would feel safe, and would be warm when doing there business there. The building in the pictures wouldn't make someone feel safe inside it, or is that the look you are going for?

I'd also consider spraying a coat of clear Flat lacquer on the sticks to coat
them and keep them from reabsorbing any moisture.

Subject: [finescaleminiatures] Operations on the F&SM

Saturday morning, a group of nine model railroaders gathered in Peabody for the first ever formal operating session on the F&SM. George Sellios, Thom Driggers, Vinny D'Angelo, Ben Streeter, Paul St Martin and myself were joined by experienced operators Hal Reynolds, Dick Elwell and Bill Duffe.

We are using the car-card and waybill system sold by Micro Mark, as it promises to offer many sessions without much effort once we pass the initial set up. I have spent many weeks cataloging the industries capable of rail service, listing their loads in and out, writing car cards for all the rolling stock, and filling out the four-cycle bills of lading. Tony Koester's book, and Paul Scoles' DVD were both extremely helpful every step of the way.

Before we started, I staged two through freights to originate in the larger Fillmore yard, which is where all connecting traffic originates and terminates. These freights circle the layout before dropping cars in the central Colbert Yard. Five local trains were staged on individual Colbert yard tracks ready to drop and pick up cars in their respective locations.

After an orientation, and some preliminary tweaking, we decided to use two man teams as yardmasters and train operators while I played at the dispatcher role. Things went really well, as we became more familiar with the track plan, the industries, the double mainline crossover opportunities, and the bottlenecks at Colbert yard, South Manchester and Manchester.

Everyone had a good time, with lots of laughs. We learned that another arrival track needs to displace one of the departure tracks in Colbert yard to better handle the traffic, and we decided that model railroading really is fun, even when we imitate the real world. Running trains with a purpose on the F&SM is really as good as it gets.

I felt very grateful when Dick Elwell said in the post-op bull session that he thought it went remarkably well for a first time operating session, and George said it was one of the best days he has ever had with the layout. Tony Koester is hoping to take part in the next session after Thanksgiving, and we all feel he will find his time well spent and a rewarding experience. I can hardly wait.

Rich J.

I like the Microwave but it gives hot spots. I think putting the logs in
the oven at about 350 degrees for an hour will not only kill everything
inside it but it will also dry out the wood. Be careful when taking it out
that you don't get to eager and pick up a hand full of 350degree hot sticks!

Hi all,
Could anyone get me a colour picture of Finescale # 140 Sawmill which appeared in RMC October 1975 page 65, or if someone built this kit perhaps colour pictures of your work. I would like this for referebce while building the kit. The other possibility would be to purchase that issue if someone is willing to part with it.

I felt very grateful when Dick Elwell said in the post-op bull session that he
thought it went remarkably well for a first time operating session, and George
said it was one of the best days he has ever had with the layout. Tony Koester
is hoping to take part in the next session after Thanksgiving, and we all feel
he will find his time well spent and a rewarding experience. I can hardly wait.

Hi all,
Could anyone get me a colour picture of Finescale # 140 Sawmill which appeared in RMC October 1975 page 65, or if someone built this kit perhaps colour pictures of your work. I would like this for referebce while building the kit. The other possibility would be to purchase that issue if someone is willing to part with it.
Thank you,

Alec
