Or, as my late mother-in-law used to say, "The English and the Irish don't amount to much, but anything is better than the darned old Dutch!" (She was a 6th generation Canadian whose roots include all three of these nationalities, so I guess she knew what she was talking about!)
I seriously question that Americans speak 'English', but an American form of English. (It's a pet peeve of mine living in close proximity to 'them'!)
