Emmanuel, Thank you for your excellent reports.
I add an idea from Lithuania's independence movement. The organizers
of the demonstrations should take responsibility as you say. In
Lithuania (1988-1990) the organizers selected security volunteers who
wore official armbands and there job was to keep order. So this is
an idea that we can spread. Also, we could award prizes for the best
peace demonstrations.
I have taken the liberty to sign you up for our Minciu Sodas working

It so good to be with youths and do well to lives of other people who
are hurting are affected. Personally, this has been my experience in
this moment in time that our country is wailing and calling for help
from around the world. I've seen it all; peace is a product of self
yet very dear and has to be strived at. This has been my passion to
enable my fellow youths to come back together and forget their tribal
divides and live yet again in unity. When I started this initiative
by contacting my friends and other youths through the airtime sent to
me by Ken, it all seemed to be futile till when things stated
becoming straight and people stated cooperating seeing the importance
of unity and the value of protecting and helping others who
are innocent but just caught in between power struggles. When we got
together as members of Nandi hills youth group it was more than a
get together for all around us our friends were running for their
lives and leaving others swearing that they are leaving for good. We
were only three when we started, that is Alphose Odongo, Sila Kibet
and me. Then we contacted friends and we as when people gather to
chat it all politics we talked on how to save our property our friends
properties and when hell broke loose we held hands with pastors and
other leaders to help restore the situation.
I have sent over the letters through Ken to let you know how am
progressing. Hope that you can help this cause in any other way that
we can't. please call me through this number

Peace comes from within you can not seek it from without. Budha.
When the uprising militias from Nandi hills made their way on
Wednesday 16th to Kapsabet 17km away all seemed bad but things turned
out for good making a turning point in the mass called from ODM
arty . in the earlier meeting coordinated by the elite members of
Hills Youth group including various university students at the
Nandi Hills gardens the following was agreed on:-
1. that a thorough search be made house to house to get back looted
property back to the owners because some of the youths were now
terrorizing people en in broad daylight taking away their property in
the name of Mass Action.
2. Any person involved in hooliganism and theft are to be burnt alive
as means of curbing this vice. This is known as mob justice and is
commonly practiced here in Kenya where a victim is torched with tires
till death.
3. All councilors elect were to organize for security and
accountability of their supporters to ensure peaceful demonstration
in the mass action protests. Women and children either to Kikuyu's or
Kikuyu women single or married to none Kalenjins were not to be
harassed or intimidated any more as was the case that people
complaining of harassment from the Nandi youths. It was agreed that
who ever found to be doing this was to be singled out and taken to
the police.
4. Since tea factories employees and other staff were facing various
forms of harassment the management staff was invited on a meeting on
Sunday to decide on this issue.
5. We elected leaders mainly from the Nandi tribe to delegate talks
with the youth from the remote areas. These youths were being paid to
destroy threat, maim and do other violent acts to other tribes. Hence
it was agreed to create a discussion platform to enable people get
the right information and not be used wrongly by misinformation as
was the case most people couldn't define the terms of the leaders and
this was being used to perpetuate tension and instill wrong motives to
the youths who couldn?t define mass protest or demonstrations.
As part of long lasting peace and to create harmony and prevent
youths from idleness we've organized a soccer tournament and open air
concert which I'd earlier informed you about. Currently, most of our
major obstacles are out of the way such as; - hostilities between
tribes, fear, tribal barrier, police brutalism. Our major challenges
include the unemployed youths who resort to violence so as to
steal or are paid by un cooperating councilors and other hard lined
gangs and groups.
So far we've demarcated a line between peace protests and what was
previously done in fact, it was noted in the dally local paper the
Daily Nation the 17th January 08 issue that the Kapsabet peace
protests were the best peace protest were no property was vandalized.
Lastly, financial constrains which include transport and
communication are the main concerns especially after these mass
protests which has left many people jobless in particular those
employed by Kikuyus? hence depleted financial reserves. Personally
I've to wait for a the mess to clear in Nairobi so as to go back to
work since there are rumors that we are headed for a federal
government if Kibaki declines to agree with the oppossion!!
Yours faithfully,
Emmanuel Were.
