Loren,

Thanks for asking the question - about Windows Versions.

To format for more than 2 Gigs you must use Win95B or Windows 98 or later with
FAT32.
The original WIN95A used something called FAT16 (16 binary bits = 65,536
clusters in
the fat table) even with 32K in a cluster could only map 2 Gigs. The FAT32 (32
binary
bits = 4,294,967,296 clusters in the fat table) with a 4K cluster that maps 17
terabytes and with a 32K cluster it maps 137 terabytes.

Now to tell which version you have - look at the command.com file in the root
directory

If it has a date of July 1995 it is Windows 95A. If it is 1996 or later it
should be
Win 95B or later and have the FAT32 built in.

The main computer is the only one that has to be upgraded to handle the larger
drives.

There are many ways to divide the drives and load the data. You can leave them
as a
single partition, copy the CD's into sub directories and use the SUBST command
in the
autoexec.bat file. Or you can use tools like partition magic (see the bottom of
the
FHCTECH web page) to dynamically adjust the size of the partitions to match your
needs.

The servers can run Windows 95B/98 Peer to Peer, Windows NT, Novell, Lantastic,
others.

The workstations can run Windows 95A/95B/98/NT Workstation/Windows 3.11/ Dos
6.22 with
Dos Client. A lot of this will be determined by the experience and expertise of
the
Computer Specialist or volunteer that is setting up the network and the
resources
available.

HI,
I am the stake computer specialist (4+ years) and FHC Director (6+years)
so I have a vested interest in this list also. I have noted that some of
the centers are getting the F-Prot antivirus software from the
FamilySearch CD, that makes it rather old now and not very effective
with all of the new viruses coming out all the time.

Are you aware that the latest version is 3.06 and was released last week
and can be downloaded from the internet? The address I use is
http://www.itd.umich.edu/virusbusters/disinf-fprot.html
This site mentions that this is shareware and you need a license to use
it in other than a home user setting. I checked with the Church computer
support office this morning to verify that the Church has a site license
for the both DOS and Windows versions and they assure me that they do,
so we can use it on all Church computers. I have it installed on all of
our Stakes computers including the FHC's.

Rick, It might be useful to list this information on the FHCTECH WEB
site.

I do not have any networking experience not have successfully installed
the FamilySearch CDs on a FHC computer even with your help several
months ago, I just gave up. But now you all havc inspired me to try
again. Don't know about doing a network in the FHC (5 computers) since
it appears that it would take WIN 95/98 on all machines, but alas they
are all but one 486's with DOS. That sounds like it would take a lot of
cash, and since budget funds can't be spent this way the only way is to
pay for it myself and well.... Oh well. Anyway, I would be willing to
help others with all other computer problems. I started out as a
computer tech in 1961 and have been doing it off and on ever since. I
have also done computer programing with Fortran & COBOL (sort of dates
me doesn't it <G>).
So Rick you can list me on the FHCTECHsite.

--Hi Rick
	 I feel there is a need to put out a message to the list. Correct me if I am
wrong is this statement. Win95 can only make a partion of 2 gigs. Windows 98
will make a drive as large as the hard drive. I recomend on win98 to make a
drive C: using about 1 gig for the operating system data. The balance of the
drive to be E: Saving D: for the CD_Rom. When a second drive is installed to
format it the full size of the drive as F:. The master computer should have
Windows 98 for best results. Windows 95 is fine on the Slave computers.
	 When Copying the disk to the drive explain to put in directories such as AF
for ancestral file. IGA For the original disks and AD for the addendum.
Share all the drives. then Map the data and call the data as drive H;,I:,J:,
K;, L;, M:, N:.

Windows NT server can connect all drive to gather as one drive after setting
aside space for the operating system. Windows 2000 will be out in November
It will take the place of windows NT server. I am not good at writing. I
hust hope you undrstand what I am saying.

They will support them to some extent. When we set ours up I was told by
SL
that in order to get it supported you needed to get to go through the
proper
process to have it authorized. This was explained to me as follows: Have
the
FHC director write a letter to the Regional rep. in your area, if he
approves it send a copy of the letter to SL and they will then support
it. I
can tell you this their knowledge is very. very limited and based on
Novell
(comes out of Utah, I wonder why they support it?) if you mention
Microsoft
NT you get some rather interesting comments. On the on the hand they
were
very interested in any feedback, fixes or suggestions I gave them on a
NT
setup.

The problem is in the PASSETUP.txt file. I will send you a copy of a
correct
one tomorrow when I go to FHC and retrieve a copy. Some additional
problems
you may see are included for your benefit.

The problem we had was slow printing in Family Search. For Win95/98 the
fix
was the following from MS

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q140/0/36.asp

We found a value of 15-20 seem to be the best.

For NT print failures see the following:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q163/5/51.asp and

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q132/4/60.asp

In particular nothing was indicated that you need to add a line to the
logon
script to add

NET USE LPT1: \\server\share then do a NET USE to make sure it works
across
boots. It also
seem to work better if we use RAW (FF auto) as the datatype.

As of yet I have not seen this but it's something to keep in the back of
you
head.

While netbuei is faster (due to less overhead) Microsoft has made
several
statements at several different forums that they intent not to add
further
fixes or development to netbeui. In fact several tests run on Win98
lately
show TCPIP to be faster than netbuei. I use TCPIP because I then have
something to work with for diagnostic purposes. Our network is NT based
all
the way thru with one Win98 machine for compatibility testing.

As far as your comment on internet access on FHC computers, you are very
correct about the policy. I do know that there are several program
pilots
and unauthorized centers running the internet on FHC computers. We have
a
pilot we are doing here for the Employment Centers that need internet
access
and are on church computers. As you might expect care needs to be taken
as
to who uses them and how they are protected. As far as the cost goes we
here
in Calif. have Netzero a free internet access company so it doesn't cost
the
church any money to do this.

It takes about 34 Gigs to load the current AF and IGI.
Exciting to see the large drives -

Was just talking to my one of my suppliers -
IBM has a new 37.5 Gig drive out - $367.
It is only a 5400 RPM drive, but it is Ultra DMA/66
IBM also has a 34 Gig drive out - $356
Is is a 7200 RPM drive and also Ultra 66
http://www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/diskdrdl/desk/37gp34gxpdata.htm

You can use the Promise Ultra 66 PCI Controller ($48) to run
the drive at the Ultra DMA 66 Speed. I have tested it and
it does transfer twice as fast as the motherboard IDE
channel.
http://www.promise.com/Products/idecards/u66.htm
They have a Ultra Raid 0/1 IDE Controller $133
http://www.promise.com/Products/ideraid/ft66page.htm

My supplier is Software & More (801) 272-9425 ext. 103 Tim -
tell him that Rick sent you. The drives are probably even
cheaper in California - any good sources out there that we
should be aware of?

I wanted to get each persons permission before sharing it on the web page.
If you want to send me an email personally or better yet send one like

Please help.

I have PAF version 4.0.2. I have a large database and have used the "create web
page" option to generate HTML pages. When I use "create web page" there are
three choices for "Type of Page": Ancestors, Descendants, and Selected
individuals. I choose Selected individuals. Under the selection option I filter
down to 2974 individuals. The HTML files are created successfully and the
program asks if I would "...like to view the web page using the default
browser?" I select Yes. When the browser opens the index page it displays a
Table of Contents. The first item under the Table of Contents is a link for
"Selected Families/Individuals". On this page it lists several
familes/individuals that are in my database but I didn't specify or select them
anywhere so that they would appear on this page. What I want to find out is HOW
THESE FAMILIES/INDIVIDUALS ARE SELECTED so that I can change them. It is a nice
feature, if I am understanding it correctly, and would be handy to show dead end
lines that you are currently working on, etc. If only I could figure out how it
works.

Thanks.

My name is Marty Allred and I'm the computer specialist in the Folsom 4th Ward,
Fair Oaks California Stake (on the East side of Sacramento). We currently have
5 computers networked with all of AF loaded onto hard drives. This Saturday we
expect to get the rest of the computers (bringing the total up to 12) installed
and connected. We're in a fairly technical community, so we get a lot of people
donating systems when they get new ones. I've been doing computer work for
about 15 years professionally, and between the three wards that meet in our
building we probably have 10-15 people that are full-time network
administrators, with a lot more that are in the computer field as programmers,
repair people, power users and just about every type of IT person you can
imagine.

If you've never used a system running off of the hard drive, you are really,
really missing out. I saw the notes on how to set things up, and learned
something new (the part about changing a setting in afsetup.txt), and have some
experiences that I'd like to share with everyone.

You can install AF into one directory by copying the files from the CDs there.
However, if you get into trying to install ALL of the Family Search CDs, you
will discover that some of them don't work and play well with others. In
particular, I remember that the Military Death Index has a problem with
coexisting with some of the other ones. The issue is that it has a file with
the same name, but different data, as some of the other CDs. What we've done,
after getting really frustated, was to create a separate partition for each set
of CDs. It's probably a bit of overkill, and we are running low on drive
letters, but it works.

Helpful hint: when you finish installing Family Search on one computer on the
network and want to install it on another, just copy the entire C:\PAS
directory to the new machine. Then copy the shortcut file from the desktop
(C:\Windows\Desktop\Family Search) to the same directory on the new machine.
Voila! It works. Sure beats spending all that time entering all the drive
letters and such in that lousy DOS installation program. This won't work if and
when they replace FS with a Windows version due to registry and ini files and
such.

One other thing we did was to create a partition on the server for patrons to
keep their data files. This drive got mapped to each machine (in our case as
drive G:) so that the files were accessible from any PC in the FHC. If you edit
the C:\PAS\PASETUP.TXT file and find where it has something like

DRIVEA=3 1/2 in. Diskette
DRIVEB=5 1/4 in. Diskette

and change it to

DRIVEA=3 1/2 in. Diskette
#DRIVEB=5 1/4 in. Diskette
DRIVEG=Hard Drive (Network)

then the A: and G: drives will show up as the two locations for reading and
writing files. This is particularly handy when using Temple Ready since often
the Gedcom file won't fit on a floppy.

BTW, installing all of Family Search on the hard drive(s) only takes up about
40G, which can had today for under $400. That may seem like a chunk, but if
you're paying $100 for each set of CDs, it isn't that bad and it *so* much
faster. I got 13 generations off of AF into a file in 20 seconds that took an
hour on a machine using CDs. Granted, the CD based machine wasn't as fast as
the other one, but we've been getting similar reports from people using almost
identical machines.

I read my email pretty frequently during the day, but if anyone wants to talk
on the phone, you can reach me at (916) 983-2574 in the evening. You can always
either page me or leave me voicemail anytime at (916) 866-2331. The best email
to use is mallred@...

Thanks for providing this forum, I'm sure I'll be really happy here.

Since PAF 4 is a windows program and Family Search is a DOS program I am

Hi Rick,

Just trying out the links and the one on FHCNET index.html to FHCTECH
does not work.  You have
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/fhctech/index.html Should it should be
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~fhcnet/fhctech/

Hi All,

I added the instructions for installing AF on a single computer that I
just emailed out to Shanna to the main Web Page
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~fhcnet/fhctech/

It links to a separate page with these instructions -
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~fhcnet/fhctech/single.html

If those of you that have experience networking different parts of the
Family Search program or solving other technical problems - please write
it up so that we can link it to the main page and increase the value of
the page.

Thanks, Rick

Subject: Setting Up Ancestral File on a Single Computer
klem@xxxxxxxxxxxx.xxxx

Shanna,

It is very easy to get the ancestral file to run on a single computer.

I assume that you have the hard drive already formatted to one partition
(drive). If you have it partitioned (divided) let me know.

I create a sub directory c:\pas\cdrom
Copy all the CD's to the c:\pas\cdrom directory. Most of the files are
duplicated on each of the CD's and do not need to be copied again - so
answer no when it asks if you want to overwrite them.

We need to edit the following files:
--------------------------------------------
c:\autoexec.bat - add the following line
SUBST P: C:\PAS\CDROM
(I chose P for the PAS program - any available letter would work)
---------------------------------------------
c:\pas\pas.ini
[Drives]
P=CD-ROM (Network)
(add this drive letter to the existing list)

[AF.EXE]
Description=Ancestral File
NumDrivesSearchable=12
SearchDrives=P:
AF01_JUL98=C:,Ancestral File Disk 1
AF02_JUL98=C:,Ancestral File Disk 2
AF03_JUL98=C:,Ancestral File Disk 3
AF04_JUL98=C:,Ancestral File Disk 4
AF05_JUL98=C:,Ancestral File Disk 5
AF06_JUL98=C:,Ancestral File Disk 6
AF07_JUL98=C:,Ancestral File Disk 7
AF08_JUL98=C:,Ancestral File Disk 8
AF09_JUL98=C:,Ancestral File Disk 9
-------------------------------------------------
C:\PAS\PASETUP.TXT

AF.EXE=P:P
(The first P is the drive letter, the second P is already there)
DRIVEC=Hard Drive (Diskette)
DRIVEP=CD-ROM (Network)
(By defining the DRIVEC as a Diskette it becomes an available option to save
the GEDCOMs which is faster than saving to floppies - Some of the GEDCOMs
may be up to 10 Megs)
---------------------------------------------------
C:\PAS\AF\PLAT2NET.TBL

AF01_JUL98 AF01_JUL98 AF01_JUL.98  AF01_JUL.98  P
AF02_JUL98 AF02_JUL98 AF02_JUL.98  AF02_JUL.98  P
AF03_JUL98 AF03_JUL98 AF03_JUL.98  AF03_JUL.98  P
AF04_JUL98 AF04_JUL98 AF04_JUL.98  AF04_JUL.98  P
AF05_JUL98 AF05_JUL98 AF05_JUL.98  AF05_JUL.98  P
AF06_JUL98 AF06_JUL98 AF06_JUL.98  AF06_JUL.98  P
AF07_JUL98 AF07_JUL98 AF07_JUL.98  AF07_JUL.98  P
AF08_JUL98 AF08_JUL98 AF08_JUL.98  AF08_JUL.98  P
AF09_JUL98 AF09_JUL98 AF09_JUL.98  AF09_JUL.98  P
AF01_JUL98

(The drive letter is at the end of the line)
------------------------------------------------------------
C:\PAS\AF\AFSETUP.TXT

MAXGOBACK=100
MAXGENS=99
(The original value were 14 and 13, In the install you have the choice of
5,9,13)

Notes on this setting:
The royal lines only go back about 80 or so generations, so 99 is fine and
values greater do not display well in the AF program. This allows you to
create a GEDCOM for up to 99 generations at a single time.

Remember: This only follow the primary (default) parent links. And not all
individuals in Ancestral Files are linked to their parents, even if they are
both in the database - It is still important to manually check the data.
Also after creating the GEDCOM, I usually
load it and do an auto merge on ID. AF will occasionally create the same
individual
more than once, one with data and the other linked to the parents, but both
with the
same AFN.

I set up the DRIVEC as a diskette. This allows the AF to create a GEDCOM on
the C drive - which is much faster. I then start up PAF 4.0 (Ancestral
Quest) or PAF 2.31 or 3.0 and create the individual and their spouse, import
their data, merge the individuals to the imported data, and do the automatic
match/merge on ID. Then I export it to diskettes for the patron.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
If you still have room, I usually add the library catalog -
copy the entire contents of the CD to the c:\pas\cdrom directory - it is
very important to keep the directory structure the same.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Edit the c:\pas\pas.ini file
[LC.EXE]
Description=Family History Library Catalog
NumDrivesSearchable=1
SearchDrives=P:
FHLC_CD01=C:,Library Catalog
----------------------------------------------------------------
Edit the c:\pas\pasetup.txt
LC.EXE=P:P
(The first P is the drive letter, the second P is already there - I think it
stands for Primary)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
After you have this up and running, it is an easy step to add another drive
(say a Maxtor 27 Gig drive for under $270) and load the whole IGI and
addendum and then add network cards ($16/each) and network the computers
together with a concentrator ($35).

Please email if you have any questions - we have a new email list
fhctech@onelist.com that is for FHC Directors and Computer Specialists and
deals with technical issues.

We are here to help on each step of the way.

I recently set up a 21" monitor (donated) for a center. We we able to
have several windows open at the same time. We opened one with Family
Search and a separate window with the genealogy software. This made it
very convenient to do research and enter data. Hopefully the price
continue to drop to make them more widely available.

It is possible to setup two screens on the same computer. It requires
two compatible video cards (not all work). The cards are cheep (under
$40) and monitors are only about $120. Windows 98 is able to treat them
as the same window. I haven't personally set this up yet. Does anyone
have experience doing this or know of a web page that explains it more?

This separates all the fhctech files into a sub directory so we don't
create any problems for the fhcnet pages and allows the main file to be
the standard index.html

I would like to create a list of all the support people with there
location and contact information so that other family history
directors/computer specialists can find someone in their own area.
There is a table near the bottom of the page with a list of some of the
support people. I set up the first such page with Rick Prentice's
information.
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~fhcnet/fhctech/rickp.html

It has also been suggested that we provide a picture of those that are
willing so that we can put a face with the name.

If you are willing - please send a bio like RickP's to the list so that
we can get to know each other better. Or you can create your own page
and send me the url and I'll make the link.

	 This is the bit that has me stumped. Setting it up is easy. Instead of
assigning the whole IGI to a single serch disk (the norm), you can assign
individual disks to different drives. ie UK to the hard drive, Europe to a
different disk and North America to the CD. The trouble is that the FS
program does not recognise the change of source type. The hard drives split
works perfectly but the CD will only work if the CD you want happend to be
in at the time. Since it doesn't tell you which CD to load this is a
problem.

	 I have a pro tem solution which is that I run two versions of Family
Search. One (C Drive) works for the UK Only. A second (E Drive) only uses
the CDs but will work for the whole world. Since less than 5% of our clients
need this, it works fine.

	 I think it is a FS program fault.

	 I have some comments on the rest of your idea which I will post separately.

History Directors and Computer Specialists that have set up networks, or
want to, or want to help others. I am sending this to the list on my
lunch break so that others can send you answers. I will send my answers
tonight. I'm sure you will get it working.)

Claude wrote the following to me (he is not on the mailing list - so
please send replies to him and the list)

I am the director of the Strasbourg-France Family History Center (FHC
221-009). I have a copy of your Networking FHC Computer. In spring I
visited the NY center and have seen the network system.

I need your advise. Allow me to ask you some questions about the
simplified networking with only one computer.

1- I (do not plan) to have a complete net organization for our FHC’s
computers. The only thing I want to do is to have one computer having a
large enough hard disk to be able to install parts of the Family Search
program such as Ancestral File (9 CD’s), US social security death index
(3 CD’s), the most asked parts of the IGI (maybe 10 CD’s), and the FHL
catalog. Now my questions = about 25 CD’s

2- Question A): I foresee to purchase a new computer with the
following configuration : *a 300 Mhz pentium or equivalent, *two 15 Gig
hard disks (total of almost 30 Gig), 1 CD’s reader, one 1.44 diskette
reader, etc., with Window 98 and Works, etc., without any multi media
devices. But, maybe, with two monitors, one oriented to my side and one
oriented to the patron side, so that we are both able to read the
screen. What do you think about that configuration ? What is your
advise ?

3- Question B) : How does the program recognize the necessary CD on
the hard disk.? With other words what is the best Installation Procedure
for having a right operating Family Search?

I am eagerly waiting your answer and I would appreciate it very much. I
apologize for having taken that opportunity to sent you that e-mail.

Thank you so much for your kindness.

I would like to add a link and information about list members that are

that tonight for Rick Prentice with the information he sent me. If you
would allow me to include your name and information please send me an

know each other.

My thought is to sort the list by location so that the centers my be
able to find a contact that lives close to them. It is a lot faster for
me to go to a center and fix some of the small details, instead of doing
it over the phone. In my case, SLC and Provo are both within a 40 mile
radius. Frequently, I teach them how to load the data on the hard
drives, so I can come clean up the settings fairly quickly.

(Rick's note - Loren is not on the list so please send the answer to the both
Loren and
the list)
Loren,

Edit the c:\pas\af\afsetup.txt file to:
MAXGOBACK=100
MAXGENS=99

It could go back more, but 80 generations is enough and 101 & 100 do not display
as
well on the screen.

Important notes: This only follow the primary (default) parent links. And not
all
individuals are linked to there parents, even if they are both in the database -
It is
still important to manually check the data. Also after creating the GEDCOM, I
usually
load it and do an auto merge on ID. AF will occasionally create the same
individual
more than once, one with data and the other linked to the parents, but both with
the
same AFN.

Other note: You can define the Drive C as a diskette by adding this line to the
c:\pas\pasetup.txt
DRIVEC=Hard Drive (Diskette)

This allows the AF to create a GEDCOM on the C drive - much faster. I then
bring it
into PAF 4.0 (Ancestral Quest) and create the individual and their spouse,
import their
data, merge the individuals to the imported data, and do the automatic
match/merge on
ID. Then I export it to diskettes for the patron.

Not sure on the screen saver - my guess is to change the
TIMEOUTACTION=IGNORE
in the c:\pas\pasetup.txt file

If I'm wrong, someone on the mailing list will correct me.
