There is a similar purse in Nicky Epstein's book, "Fabulous Felted Bags" called
Queen's Ball. It has knitted balls hanging on the bag which is knitted in
checker squares in shades of green. The handle though is a purchased faux
leather handle, so this might not be the one you're looking for. Go to this
website:
http://www.twoswansyarns.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?item=BK-1893063151&template=bo\
ok

It shows pictures of each bag. The one I'm referring to is the 8th picture
(last one on the right, second row).

How this helps.

Thanks, Barbara.  I did find that same errata a long time ago.  And, no, it
doesn't address my complaint.  I just wrote a long response to Tora, so read
that when you get a chance.  As I said there, I am considering knitting it in
the round if the latest endeavor doesn't work out.  Also, I have an email in to
the publisher, but they say on their site that it could take 3 to 4 weeks for a
response.  I sure wish Nicky would be more available to her customers.

Errata for that book is on the Vogue Knitting site :
<http://www.voguekni tting.com/ books/errata_ knittedflowers. php> but it
doesn't really address your complaint. Please let us know how you did it if you
figure it out and like your results. Are you going to try knitting it in the

The sides were so uneven looking and I was thinking "How am I ever going to seam
this baby together without going nuts?" So guess what? I frogged (you know,
rrrriiiippppitttt) it out to the plain rows back to before the beginning of the
lattice. I am graphing it out on some graph paper enlarged, so I can mark off
the decreases and exactly where they should come. So I will see if that works
better for me. I wouldn't recommend anyone trying to knit this one -- it's a
total nightmare. I wonder why she didn't just put it on circular needles and
knit all around, which would have been much easier and decreases wouldn't be
hanging off the sides. I will post my finished purse (if I ever get it done,
that is!) tee hee.

Tora!  Thanks for validating my frustrations with knitting the NE Lattice bag!
I, too, absolutely fell in love with that bag when I first saw it.  It was the
photograph that got to me I think.  Clever? probably.  I was a fanatic to find
the pattern and ended up getting the back issue of Vogue as soon as I found out
where it was published.  Little did I know, that it was also shown in "Knitted
Flowers", so then I ended up with two of the patterns!  Talk about obsessions!
Geez!

I worked on it a little last night.  I tried graphing it out, but that got more
labor intensive than I wanted to get into, so scrapped that.  Knitted to the row
where the first decrease is supposed to be and decided not to decrease there,
but wait until there was a row where it was a little more stable (she has you
decrease where there is a purled/wrapped/elongated stitch at the beginning which
makes the side to "wobbly" (for lack of a better word).  So, I knitted through
that row but I haven't decided just where to make the first decrease.  It's
definitely a work in progress.  If I ever get this thing knitted to my
satisfaction, I will make my notes available to anyone who wants them.

You're so right -- I have never seen one of these bags completed either!  I am
surprised that I haven't run across a blog or a forum where someone else
complained about it.  I am a very determined knitter and I am not ready to throw
in the towel --  yet (or should I say throw in the knitting?)..  It could happen
though.  If this doesn't work out, I am considering doing it on circular needles
instead, using markers for each side.  That would alleviate having to sew the
sides up later (which I hate anyway) and maybe the decreases would be a little
easier to figure out and would probably look better in the long run.  I will
keep you posted on progress.

Anyone else out there with a comment/suggestion?

Barb your absolutely right! I tried to knit that bag several years ago and had a
TERRIBLE time, so much so that I never finished it and frogged the whole thing.

And I was really bummed because I FELL IN LOVE with that bag. And isn't it
funny, you never see anyone wearing that bag - ever! Must mean that there's no
one out there with a completed version!

Let me know if you ever get it done...as I would really love to try my hand at
it again.

Hey! Nice to see some message traffic in here! I haven't done OPB (other
people's bags) and I haven't even seen NE's lattice bag. I've never
followed a pattern exactly, so I can't say anything to the decrease
difficulties, other than thank goodness felting is so forgiving! What I
tend to do is just be consistent in whatever I do and frog alot if I don't
like it.

It's now the end of July 2009 and I haven't posted for about 2 years. Now, I
feel like I need someone's opinion or help on a felted bag. I am working on
Nicky Epstein's lattice bag in her book of Knitted Flowers. I am having trouble

Like that idea of making up a blanket with the scrap pieces........I
imagine if you choose similar weights it could be an unusual shrug or
shawl? Might try that idea myself!
Im in the process of moving downstairs after 10 months living upstairs
after last years floods.
So the craft room is under construction again, in as much its moving
from one side of my bedroom to the other, now Ive less furniture
squeezed in there with my bed!
Thing is, I have SO much fabric/wool/etc etc, that I need the back
bedroom which should be the spare/guest room, for storing all the
plastic boxes of absolutely essential 'makings'.....for when I need
it/them!
Its not that I have TOO much, its that I havent enuff time to MAKE
everything, fo course.....
At last I can start in with stitching up fulled wool garments and
knitting to felt and even better........wet felting and embellishing!
WORK is a bother isnt it?
It takes you away from the Creative Urges..........lol

I've got a book with a patchwork blanket made with pieces of felted
sweaters, they cut pieces of different sizes and zig-zag stitched them
together with the edged butted together.

Today at http://craftside.typepad.com/ there is a cute pattern and how-to for a
recycled
wool felted sweater drawstring bag with needle felted polka dots and modified
from a
placemat and napkin pattern.
Enjoy!
