Omg,
Just please use the tool. It works in concert with other groups! I know! I had
the EXACT same issue that you are describing! I got rid of them too using the
mod tool (spammer part)! I continue to get a pop up warning about one or two a
week, and I banish them before they get a chance to act. We have no more
problems with this issue.

If you want, you can request Nigel to run a special tool that he has just for
the task. If he can handle a group of 20k in about an hour, I am sure he can
handle yours and your surrounding groups, too.

Here is an example.

ABC@... is a spammer. They join a group, and harvest the email addressed
sent to them in the digests or individual emails.
They then generate the spam with their other email address.

When ABC@... joins 50+ groups, IT GETS NOTICED. When you ban them, you ban
the spammer. When ABC@... joins a group in NJ, then California, then in the
UK, chances are, they are not joining for global recycling. IT GETS NOTICED.

As for your members, you counsel them to watch out for those "feel good"
messages, the one that tells you "Oh, I happen to have one of those and you can
see it at *this* website link, here.
The format is pretty uniform, and easy to discern. Have them mark those as spam.

Trust me. It works.
Jamey

and FYI

It's happening in groups all over the area- I just got this in- and another one
from Princeton NJ's Freecycle group

Hi all,

Just a reminder to PLEASE not send anything but OFFERs, WANTEDs, TAKENs and
RECEIVEDs to the list. And if someone does send a comment, statement, question,
or something else to the list, that does not mean that you need to reply to it
on list as well.

Regarding Carol Heinz, Esther Simmons and Sarah Luntz (and whatever future fake
names/emails the spammer(s) takes on) - none of them are members of our
Freecycle group, and therefore cannot be removed from the group. Someone is
forwarding the messages from our group to some other account from which to spam
everyone. Please just don't click on the links, don't register for anything, and
if you have any suggestions on how we can stop this, please email
freecycle-union- nj-owner@ yahoogroups. com.

Thanks,

Larissa

Trademarks are good when used properly as they identify the source of
something for purposes of knowing what quality you expect from that
good or service. They are not good if used to control language or what
people say. Trademarks are tools like knives. They can be used
properly to prepare food or they can be used improperly to injure
others.

There are 3 options in regards to freecycle:

1) if you support TFN and want TFN to own the trademark/word, you can
actively support this by saying on your group and the footers of your
emails:
"Freecycle and the Freecycle logo are trademarks of The Freecycle
Network in the United States and/or other countries"

2) If you are neutral, don't say anything about whether TFN has a
trademark on "freecycle" or not

3) If you believe freecycle is a new word and deserves to be free, you
can actively support this position by saying on your group and the
footers of your group emails:
"freecycle: to recycle by giving an item away for free rather than
sending it to the dump"

I continue to advocate for freecycle being free because:
1) TFN already has a sufficient trademark in the phrase "The Freecycle
Network" or even in the acronym "TFN".
2) TFN gave away freecycle earlier and should not have the right to
demand the word back.
3) Freecycle is a great word.

Cheers,
Tim

it did that to me as well but when I went back I realized that I had filled in
the question incorrectly - it asks for the name of your group- I had put in the
name as it appears in the URL with no spaces

Put in the name as it appears on the front page of your group- with spaces and
see if that works.

No, you do not. Else I would be a member of groups around the globe! You are
talking about another function entirely. I am talking about spammers and people
from Canada joining groups in London (Jackie, ;)ROFL), china, New Zealand) The
function I am talking about will resolve your spam issue.

You configure it in the periodic checking in the checking tab. Just follow Ed's
Wiki on the matter, and you can configure it too.

I get a popup that tells me when someone has joined multiple other groups, and
who had been reported for spamming and the reason. I have to choice to ban,
ignore, remove, I can also report someone to the list.

Nigel maintains a list of people who are spammers, and multiple joiners.

Sorry you are right here. To check up on spammers that are piggy backing on
normal members email addresses or using lots of different names, and are not yet
on the spammers list, you do have to join other groups its affecting as a
moderator.
NOrmally it happens to a few at once and someone asks a couple of others if
they can come on and check and then we get told which addys to watch out for. I
don't get involved and so whether they use the plugin or whether they export the
members lists and look in excel for duplicates I have no idea. I just ban any I
am told of.

track down the WANTED spammer.

I am the moderator of one list but not of the other.

I'm under the impression that I have to be the moderator of both lists in order
to compare them using the plugin.

am i right?

I use the Moderator Tool on my ReUseIt groups, and I can see if a pending
member is asking to join any freecycle group. I don't need to be a member of
those other groups to get the list.

I think you must have asked a different question or it must work differently in
the USA. We cannot see any wanted messages unless we are members, or anything in
pending unless we are moderators. We can see what other groups members have
joined in the last month which usually tells us if they are spammers.
I believe if you put a wanted on and get a reply you can find the IP you can
then do a check on the plug in see if it ties in with another member.

It's beyond my capabilities to track them all as there are multiple e-mail
addresses that are sending the harvesting (with links) e-mails to members. It's
happening all over the country- a big cluster here in the NYC/NJ area and then
more reported (modsquad) in various areas.

Even if we could track them- how do we figure out which members in a particular
group are forwarding the wanted e-mails to the harvesters- since they don't use
the same e-mail address to join the group.

It's beyond me.

They are harvesting e-mails. We're trying to find and ban them but so far it's
impossible since they use one e-mail addy for Freecycle membership and another
for sending the e-mails with links.

I'm comparing lists of members with some of the large groups in my area to see
if we can find e-mails in common. In the meantime, although we keep sending out
admins that have warnings..the membership continues to click on these links.

Nancy,

According to the information about the Google advertising program at <
http://www.google.com/intl/en_us/ads/ads_1x.html>: "No matter what your
budget, you can display your ads on Google and our advertising network. Pay
only if people click your ads. ... You create ads and choose keywords, which
are words or phrases related to your business. ... When people search on
Google using one of your keywords, your ad may appear next to the search
results. Now you're advertising to an audience that's already interested in
you. ... People can simply click your ad to make a purchase or learn more
about you. You don't even need a webpage to get started – Google will help
you create one for free. It's that easy!"

So what you saw in the list of ads came about because the people behind the
ads chose "freecycle" as a keyword. They may not even have anything to do
with freecycle, but they probably figured that there would be a lot of
people searching for "freecycle" and they wanted those people to know about
them.

If you are really worried about a link, check the domain name using a search
engine. Usually if there is something wrong, you'll see something about
it. I checked this one and didn't see any flags about Xane Systems (other
than their site is down for maintenance).

Another use of freecycle..seriously, I don't think anyone should click on that
link...I did and my computer is OK (good virus protection) but I am not sure if
the link is safe. This is basically a warning so no one will click on it if
they get one in their e-mail.
