City FC is going to build a reservoir at the NW corner of I25 & Kechter.  The
city also mentioned it was connected to their natural areas.  The water would be
coming from the sewage treatment plants.  Wouldn't it be nice if they added a
managed shorebird habitat to the reservoir.  They will be destroying some
shorebird habitat while buildng the reservoir.  An acre of shorebird habitat
would be good, a 1/4 acre would be nice. Second best would be to plan the
habitat in and then a developer needing a wetlands mitigation could do the
construction.

Just dreaming.

Dear Auduboners -

My apologies if you receive duplicate messages.

Today I was contacted by Wally Van Sickle of IDEA WILD about their upcoming
fundraiser at Nature's Own this coming Thursday evening, from 5:00 PM until
10:00 PM.

IDEA WILD raises money and obtains equipment for researchers in developing
countries. Often the small items of equipment (microscopes, gps units,
etc.) cost more than the annual salaries of the researchers. But the
research being conducted is invaluable in providing an understanding of
endangered wildlife and its needs.

Please consider doing some Christmas Shopping this Thursday, at Nature's
Own.

Hi Bill,

Here is the silly email and flyer for the Nature Goes Wild event for IDEA
WILD. You can edit it as you wish or add you personal experience regarding
IDEA WILD. Please let me know if you need anything else. All Audubon
members making purchases that night will be part of making a bird research
project possible in some other country. I could tell them all about it at a
presentation some time in 2010.

Fellow Audubon Members,

This holiday season you could shop here:

Hi all,

With the upcoming Christmas bird counts in mind I want to pass along a very cool
link that allows you to estimate flock sizes and see how close you are to
reality. I know that for my part I have probably tended to underestimate flock
sizes for bird counts, while I'm sure others perhaps overestimate. This could be
a nice resource to pass along to enthusiastic but inexperienced recruits in your
CBCs, or to anyone for that matter.

My sis Lauren and I spent the better part of yesterday exploring
Castlewood Canyon in wonderful weather. While we didn't find any
"birds of note" the place was filled with them. The Canyon rim
hosted a slew of Townsend's Solitaires singing nearly non-stop.
Spotted Towhees mewing from every bush. We came upon a flock of 30 or
so Pine Siskins up there feasting on fir cones and doing spiral wing-
dances above the rim. I expected Ponderosa Pines, but was surprised
at all the Fir trees there. Many Juncos on the rim also, Oregon,
Gray-headed and Pink-sided. The views were spectacular and we
avoided the weather to the north.

The canyon bottom was busy as well. We found one Canyon Wren near the
dam and heard one 'seet' note from, we think, a White-crowned
Sparrow, our only sparrow of the day. The canyon was full of
Steller's Jays, Juncos, the above 3 and Slate-colored, both Mountain
and Black-capped Chickadees, several Brown Creepers, scads of Red-
breasted Nuthatches with much to talk about. A few Pygmy Nuthatches
and about a basketful of White-breasted.

We also had a few unusually quiet Scrub-Jays and a couple of handfuls
of Downy Woodpeckers. Spotted Towhees filled the brushy areas down
here too. Just as we were about to reach our car, in the scrub oak
near the Westside trailhead, we were surrounded by a flood of birds.
Seriously, we stood with our jaws hanging open, (not a pretty sight
and we quickly got ourselves under control lest a chickadee cache
seeds under our tongues.) All the same species as listed, both
chickadees, all 3 nuthatches, downys, juncos, 1 robin, creepers and
towhees, feedingfeedingfeeding and talking with their mouths full and
stashing seeds and chasing one another and peeking at us from behind
tree trunks. It was an amazing and glorious sight and we felt
privileged to be a part of it.

Grosbeak and American Pipit, 5 calling Cassin's Finch (photographed) and a late
Orange-crowned Warbler (ph.). Lots of chickadees and robins. Great habitat for

Sounds as if there might actually be a way for the Greeley pipeline to avoid

Hi everyone,

I've been seeing a female intergrade Northern Flicker at my feeder here in Fort
Collins the past few days. This bird has bright yellow shafts and coloration on
the flight feathers, but has the head markings for a typical female red-shafted
flicker (i.e., no red nape mark). This is the first time I've seen a creature
like this - has anyone else seen such birds here?

And as I write this, I can see her out my window on the feeder once again.
Fascinating! And very pretty to boot.

On Monday, I walked around Pineridge Natural Area (a.k.a Dixon Reservoir) in
southwest Fort Collins, and was amazed at how birdy it was. The rarest species
was a couple of Evening Grosbeaks heard calling as they flew overhead.. Most of
the birds were common or expected species, but some were more numerous than
expected. There were at least half a dozen Pied Billed Grebes, Canyon Wrens,
Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Hermit Thrushes, Orange-crowned Warblers and Lesser
Goldfinches, a dozen Blue-gray Gnatcatchers and White-crowned Sparrows, 2 dozen
Yellow-rumped Warblers, many dozen House Finches. Also present was a Merlin,
Rock Wren, Western Scrub-Jays, Common Yellowthroat, Wilson's Warbler (Eastern
race), Oporornis-sp. Warbler (probably MacGillivray's), Lincoln's Sparrow, a
couple Chipping Sparrows and 4 Pine Siskins.
Nearby at the south end of Horsetooth Reservoir, hundreds of California and
Ring-billed gulls loafed on shore across from the boat ramps, including an adult
Lesser Black-backed Gull (reported earlier) and 5 Herring Gulls. A flyby
Sharp-shinned Hawk was probably migrating.

The NOCO Big Sit! held at my house in Loveland was a big success. The
cold finally drove us to our warm homes around 2:00. I went out to
the circle several more times throughout the afternoon and did add
Pine Siskin to the list. We beat our last years total of 27 by 12
species with a total of 39, one bird shy of our goal. Not bad
considering the weather! We missed some easy birds, American
Goldfinch, Red-tailed Hawk and Downy Woodpecker. Some nice surprises
were Mountain Chickadee, Greater Yellowlegs and a mixed flock of
grebes. Ann Donoghue, Kathleen Dowd, Lauren Burke and later Denise

Hi everyone--

Birder's World Associate Editor Matt Mendenhall is attending the meeting of
the Society of Environmental Journalists taking place now in Madison,
Wisconsin.

Yesterday he co-led an open-door, behind-the-scenes media tour of Necedah
NWR, summer home of the eastern flock of endangered Whooping Cranes, and of
the International Crane Foundation in Baraboo. You can read about it on our
blog:

Birder's World Field of View

http://is.gd/48VAp

Matt's report contains lots of news, and it features lots of photos -- of
refuge manager Larry Wargowsky, lead pilot Joe Duff, ICF founder George
Archibald, and other craniacs, as well as an awesome in-flight shot of
Whooping Cranes 12-02 and 17-02, parents of the only chick to be
successfully hatched and fledged in the wild.

Enjoy!

In autumn, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds typically put on a good deal of

fat that sustains them in their long south-bound migratory flight.

Through the years we've captured and banded several rather rotund ruby-

throats, but a few days ago we caught the ultimate in chubbiness. For

our somewhat tongue-in-cheek look at obesity in hummingbirds, please

visit the bonus installment of "This Week at Hilton Pond" for 29-30

September 2009. The latest photo essay is at
http://www.hiltonpond.org/ThisWeek090929.html

While there, scroll down to see what birds we banded in the short, two-

day period and get an update on our hummer banding progress in 2009.

Happy Heavy Hummingbird Watching!

Yesterday, September 30, a lone cormorant was at College Lake on the Colorado
State University Foothills Campus. It was small, with thin bill, very little
facial skin under the bill on the throat, with a very pale throat. Studying it
through a scope revealed the pointed shape to the orange facial skin and
feathered lores, indicating Neotropic Cormorant. This bird had darker orange
skin and paler throat than the one being seen off an on since mid-August at
Timnath Reservoir. I'll try to get photos if it is still there this morning.
Unfortunately, the foothills campus is not public access. If it hangs around, I
may be able to arrange an organized field trip there this weekend. Stay tuned.

The Sibley Guide does not show Neotropic Cormorant with a pale throat, but I
have seen (and photographed) such individuals in Texas and Guatemala. The
paleness does not extend as far down onto the chest as on young Double-crested
Cormorants.

I just recently learned that there's a birding TV show on these days, called
"Birding Adventures" with James Currie. It's funny to me because I had just been
thinking a few weeks ago that there would be a market for a travelogue-style TV
show centered on birdwatching, and wouldn't you know, there already is one. I
guess it premiered last January, but I'd never heard of it.

The next half-hour show is on Sunday at 12:30pm on Fox Sports Net, so if you
don't have cable, you're outta luck. This translates to Channel 26 on Comcast
Fort Collins. From what I can tell it also is not on a fixed schedule, for it
seems to have been on at 9:30am last Sunday, so be aware of that too.

Anyway, thought we all might be interested in learning about it. You can even
see a promo for the show to get an idea of what it's all about at

Auduboners –

Below is the information about the ONLY playing of the futuristic climate
change movie "The Age of Stupid." It will be playing Monday evening at 5:30
PM.

I reserved a ticket using my credit card at the web site,
http://www.ageofstupid.net/screenings/cinemas/1507.

When the page comes up, click on the “Book Tickets” ticket in the upper
right hand corner of the page.

On the page that follows, click on the “5:30” that appears in the last
frame, titled “Tickets.” Price: $12.50 + $2.00 service charge.

For reviews, GOOGLE on “The Age of Stupid”. Here is one of them:
http://www.wired.com/underwire/2009/09/review-the-age-of-stupid-gets-smart-o
n-enviropocalypse

Of course, the film, set in 2055, is completely fictitious because we still
don’t know how the whole scenario of global climate disruption will play
out. But the evidence keeps coming in, and the predictions are pretty dire.

“Crowd-funded by a profit-sharing partnership comprising a mere 228 people
and groups, including a hockey team and a women’s health center, who each
invested portions of its £450,000 budget, The Age of Stupid is a
destabilizing experience. Its Monday global opening is concurrent with
United Nations Climate Week, although the film has already been screened by
the Scottish, Welsh, Swedish, Dutch and U.K. parliaments, as well as the
European Union and Obama’s think tank, the Center for American Progress. The
result is a full-court press aimed at influencing nations to come to the
U.N. <http://en.cop15.dk> ’s 2009 climate change conference in Copenhagen
with their heads and hearts in the right place.”

Poudre River Clean-up September 26th

Johnson Controls, Inc. and the Save the Poudre Coalition are sponsoring a
Poudre River Clean-up to pick up trash along the river on Saturday,
September 26th, rain or shine. Volunteers should meet at Lee Martinez Park,
600 N. Sherwood, Fort Collins. Sign-in starts at 8:30 am and the clean-up
runs until noon. The community is invited to participate.

Each year, Johnson Controls employees volunteer for and donate $1,000 to
help a local non-profit under a Blue Sky Initiative program. This year,
their employee committee included a fisherman who suggested it would be good
to help clean up trash along the river and to support the Save the Poudre
Coalition. And so a community-wide clean-up event was born.

The event is being co-sponsored by Fort Collins Audubon Society, Friends of
the Poudre, Poudre Paddlers, Sierra Club-Poudre Canyon Group, and the Rocky
Mountain Flycasters chapter of Trout Unlimited.

Volunteers are asked to wear long pants, a hat, heavy shoes or work boots
and to bring work gloves, water, sunscreen and bug repellant. Volunteers
may pre-register by sending an email to info@... or calling
493-4677. Children aged 6 -12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Children ages 13-18 not accompanied by a parent or guardian are required to
bring a pre-signed Risk and Release form. Children under the age of 6 may
not participate in the clean-up for safety reasons. For more information,
visit

www.savethepoudre.org.

Hi all,

I wanted to get the word out about a couple great FCAS field trips coming up
quickly that didn't have time to get advertised in the last newsletter. Thanks!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------\
----------------------------------------------

9/19/09, Saturday. Rocky Mountain National Park. 9:30 a.m. Leader: Ron Harden.
Meeting place: Upper Beaver Meadows Parking Lot. Ron will lead an outing to look
for late departing seasonal birds in the gorgeous Beaver Meadows area, and also
look for rutting elk in and around Moraine Park. Fall is an outstanding time to
visit RMNP! RSVP not required, but feel free to contact Ron at 970-667-3819 for
more information.

10/3/09, Saturday. Eastern Plains Reservoirs. 7:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Leader: Eric
DeFonso. Meeting place TBA. This trip will focus on the numerous productive
reservoirs east of the Fort Collins area, like Timnath Reservoir, Lower Latham,
Loloff, and possibly Jackson. We will look for late passage migrants like
shorebirds, but also other aquatic varieties like waterfowl as well as landbirds
associated with the wooded and wet areas near the reservoirs. My trips are all
about enjoyment and learning more about birds, regardless of your amount of
experience. All levels welcome and encouraged to join! To sign up or get more
information, contact Eric DeFonso by email at yoericd@... or by phone at
(970)-472-1761.
