Dear Audubon Citizen-Scientist types -

Below is the email that I just received from Kate Bolster, regarding an
opportunity to participate in a program on invasive plant species. Kate has
been down with bronchitis / pneumonia, which delayed her contacting me until
today.

Please note that on-line training is ongoing right now, and training is
scheduled for this coming weekend (July 11 - 12). Please see the two
attachments for details.

Hi, Bill,

Good to talk with you this morning. Here is the latest email I received
about Greg's invasive species project. Below is the link to CSU's website
article about it, which explains the program in a nutshell. I hope there
will be some Audubon interest in this. I'm very excited about the
opportunity to learn about this problem. I'll also contact the Native Plant
Society. Thanks for your help!

Subject: Citizen Science Information and Update - In person group

Greetings In-Person Citizen Scientists!

Thank you for participating in our citizen science training program! I want
to thank each and every one of you personally for participating! Results
from this experiment will be used to determine whether our trainings are
providing citizens with the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to carry
out scientific research independently. These data will also provide
information to local, state, and federal agencies on the quality of data
collected by citizen scientists.

Questions selected for our pre and post evaluations (provided to you at the
training event) have been coordinated with other national citizen science
programs and will provide comparisons among these programs throughout the
United States. These data are essential in determining the general
effectiveness of informal science education programs and how they may differ
from more formal education settings; your participation is extremely
important!

Thanks again, and happy 4th of July!

---

Details for you as we near next weekend (July 11 and 12) follow:

********
Where?
********

The in person trainings will be conducted at the Colorado State University
Lory Student Center Grey Rock room (see map attached - csu_map.pdf) and the
field day will be held at the CSU Environmental Learning Center (see map
attached - elc_map.pdf). Direction to the ELC follow and are also in the
attached map (elc_map.pdf). I will post signs to the Grey Rock room and I
recommend entering the Lory Student Center from the north. More details will
be sent next week about the event and about parking suggestions and
considerations at both locations.

Directions to the ELC from Fort Collins: head east on Drake Road.
Approximately one-half mile after passing the intersection at Timberline,
turn left on environmental Drive. The road will cross a one-lane bridge and
turn sharply to the south, becoming Ziegler Rd / County Road 9. Before
making the sharp turn south, turn left on the gravel road, crossing the
railroad tracks. If you pass Lafarge Corporation, you have gone too far.
Programs at the Drake site meet at the picnic pavilion in the parking lot.

Directions to the ELC from I-25 : take the Harmony Road exit. Head west on
Harmony for approximately two miles, to Ziegler Road / County Road 9. Turn
right (north) on Ziegler. In two miles, the road will turn sharply to the
west (left) and become Environmental Dr. Rather than following the road to
the left, proceed down the gravel road straight ahead marked by our entrance
sign. If you get to a stop sign at Drake Road, you have gone too far.
Programs at the Drake site meet at the picnic pavilion in the parking lot.

When? (Schedule)
****************

On Saturday, July 11, registration will begin at 7:00 am and the trainings
will begin at 8:00 am at the CSU LSC Grey Rock room. In person trainings
will go through the day and should end around 5:00 pm.

Your field events at the ELC will begin at 8:00 am on Sunday, July 12 and
should end around 4:30 pm.

Food (breakfast snacks, lunch, and drinks) will be provided for you both
days.

**************

**************

We encourage you to bring the following: water bottle, rain gear, sunscreen,
bug repellent, hat, and folder/clip board with a pen or pencil for taking
notes. There are many mosquitoes at the ELC, so be prepared and bring bug
spray!

********

You will be conducting monitoring in several weedy areas on the ELC
property. We encourage you to wear long pants and close-toed shoes for
Sunday. Hiking is flat and should be no longer than 1 mile total (max).
