Subject: Sunday! Post-Thanksgiving Post-Apocalyptic Fun! A Boy and His
Dog
I'm sending this early because of the holiday - I'll probably send another
on Friday for those checking, but...
Sunday, November 29!
7:30 PM
MOBS at The Guild
2828 35th St (corner of 35th & Broadway)
$5.00
A Boy and His Dog
A Boy and His Dog
Follow-up your Thanksgiving with this 1975 indie classic based on Harlan
Ellison's novella.
Yeah, for long-time followers of MOBS, it's a November repeat - we've shown
this the last three years now (it's sort of become like our version of
"It's A Wonderful Life"), not knowing how many folks would come out due to
it being the weekend after Thanksgiving, and up until last year, it has
been well-attended! Last year, not so well, and this might be the final
year for it. Or not. We'll see how it goes.
The year is 2024. World War IV, which only lasted 5 minutes, has long been
over, leaving behind a post-apocalyptic wasteland. 18-year old Vic (Don
Johnson in his first, and by far best, performance) wanders with his dog,
Blood, who communicates with him telepathically. The none-too-bright Vic
scavenges for food; the rather learned and sarcastically witty Blood sniffs
out women for sex. Into this relationship comes Quilla, a woman from "Down
Under" - a supposedly idyllic underground society which attempts to
preserve the past. Quilla lures Vic "Down Under" where he discovers that
there are some rather nefarious plans for him. Considered by fans and
detractors alike to have one of the best film endings ever and was a direct
influence on films such as "Mad Max" and "The Road Warrior." This also
features the great Jason Robards.
Also of note - the dog playing Blood is named Tiger, who previously was the
Brady Bunch's dog in the first and second seasons of the show. He was
actually the second "actor" to play to Tiger (and yes, his name was also
Tiger), as the first was hit by a car.
Oh, and this ain't necessarily one for the kids.
Hope to see you there!!

(CNN) -- There is more water on the moon in more locations than originally thought, a discovery that may bolster NASA's long-held goal of setting up an outpost there, a researcher said Thursday.
NASA says there is more water on the moon in more locations than originally thought.
One ton of the moon's surface -- in which the water's ingredients are held -- could yield as much as 32 ounces, or one quart, of water, according to three reports from research teams who studied data from three spacecrafts.
Although that amount isn't large, said geological sciences professor Jack Mustard, the findings show "there are ways you could convert these amounts of water into higher amounts" that could support human activity.
The water was discovered in rocky environments and in craters, Mustard said.
"It's in more places and in different places than were inferred previously," he said.
Since the Apollo missions began in the 1960s, scientists have believed the moon was virtually dry. Only trace amounts of water were found in rocks and soil brought back to Earth, and that water may have resulted from contamination during the retrieval process, scientists said.
I'll be there this Sunday night...

Subject: Sunday! Stingray Sam!! Plus MOBS mention on Fox40
Hi there!
First off - Fox40 news anchor Natalie Bomke just made a post about MOBS on
the SacScene blog at
http://weblogs.fox40.com/news/opinion/sacramentoscene/2009/11/cheap_flicks.html
and apparently will be mentioning us on tomorrow's Sacramento Scene segment
of Fox40's news!
Plus - Stingray Sam got a nice "event pick" in Sacramento News & Review
this week!
And don't forget - this Sunday, November 15!
Stingray Sam
The Guild Theater
2828 35th St, Sacramento (corner of 35th & Broadway)
7:30 PM
Admission: $5.00
Cory McAbee's follow-up to the cult favorite, "The American Astronaut!" An
all new scifi musical western!!
A serialized film in six episodes. The official synopsis: "A dangerous
mission reunites Stingray Sam with his long lost accomplice, The Quasar
Kid. Follow these two space-convicts as they earn their freedom in exchange
for the rescue of a young girl who is being held captive by the genetically
designed figurehead of a very wealthy planet." Of course, that doesn't take
into account the pregnant men. Or the corporate mascot rehab program. Or
the tiny robot. Or the amazing music by McAbee's band, Billy Nayer Show.
Starring Cory McAbee as Stingray Sam and featuring David Hyde Pierce (TV's
"Frasier) as The Narrator, along with McAbee's 5 year old daughter, Willa
Vy McAbee.
"'Stingray Sam' leaves one begging for more... think 'The Searchers' meets
'Eraserhead.' - Variety
"Few films have me chuckling from beginning till end, but this one managed
to do it. Well, except when I was laughing. Don't be deceived by its cheap
looks or stunning black-and-white-o-vision, Cory McAbee put more creativity
and wit in his film than I've seen in ten movies twice its length and a
hundred times its budget." - Twitch Film
"[Stingray Sam is] cool. It's committed to its style. It's self-aware
without being self-assured. It's a film you want to bring your new love
interest too, because it'll show him or her that you feel comfortable
having your postmodernism smothered in hilariousness. It'll prove to this
new love in your life that not only can the avant-garde disturb filmic
conventions, but also be kind-hearted and sweet, subversive yet caring and
generous. This is not, however, some "Ice Storm" or "Squid and the Whale"
coming-of-age whinery, this is the wild galactic frickin' West. Bring your
gun. Bring your dancin' boots." - quietearth.us
Hope to see you there!

Fans of Jade Darcy
will probably get very upset with me, but no one who knows me will be
at all surprised that I've allowed myself to be seduced by yet another
young lady as the heroine of my next book. (First Polly, now this new
one. What can I say? I'm a sucker for smart, talented, daring and
beautiful young women.)
Nellie Bly was one of the most fascinating
women in American history, a fearless reporter who would do anything to
get a story exposing social evils and political corruption. She went
undercover to show up unsafe or oppressive working conditions. She was
a foreign correspondent in Mexico until the government there pointedly
invited her to go elsewhere. She feigned insanity to have herself
committed to New York's public insane asylum and exposed the inhumane
treatment of the inmates. In 1889-90 she challenged the (fictional)
record of Phileas Fogg in going around the world in 80 days. (In the 16
years since Verne's book had been published, no one had even tried
it for real.) Not only did she beat Fogg's record, she shattered it bu
more than a week--and in the process, became one of the world's first
rock-star level celebrities.
Smart, talented, daring and, not incidentally, beautiful. How could I
resist memorializing Nellie as the heroine of a new series of adventure
novels? I'm just now starting work on the first book, Nellie Bly
and the Zombie Legion. I expect it will be a lot of fun.
I've also recently gotten a
nice review of Polly! The reviewer is from Norway, so his
English isn't totally colloquial--but it's infinitely better than my
Norse, so I'm not complaining.

I'm just now starting work on a new series of books featuring a new
heroine--or an old heroine, depending on how you look at it: Nellie
Bly. The more I've learned about her, the more I want to star her in
some books. Not only was she a good writer, she was smart, funny,
courageous, daring, resourceful, talented...and beautiful. Exactly the
sort of woman I could fall in love with.

This Saturday, 2 pm, at Steph's house in Oak Park.
So the exact viewing details of this one is a bit TBD. We are going to *try* to finish up "Being Human" since we started the first 3 epsiodes of the season last month, but that is dependent on us being able to find good enough quality uploads streaming online Saturday. Don't think there is any new Who right now, but various good back-up DVDs will be at hand -- I have the series pilot movie "Caprica", or we can pop in some random comedy movie. It'll be viewer's choice, depending on attendance. :) And in a pinch there's always chitchat! :P (No worries, we know what we're doing, we're experienced professionals.....)
Potluck, so we have food and snacks to munch on while we figure out what we're watching. :)
Hi all,
We're scheduled Sunday for two interviews at Witchapalooza for SacGeeks.com, one
with Malcolm McDowell, one with Kristy Swanson. Does anyone have any questions
they would like answered with either guest?

Has anyone seen the Orphan? What about the one about the creepy twin sisters that's coming up (From The Land Beyond con had a panel on it, I believe)? Want to see more horror flicks with creepy and terrifying children in them? Then check out my article at the link below!
Set your phasers to stun or keep your light sabers holstered if you see Klingons and Imperial Stormtroopers marching through the Capitol Wednesday morning a little past 11 a.m. The Star Trek and Star Wars villains are simply promoting a new CA Museum exhibit set to open Thursday called Out of This World: Extraordinary Costumes from Film and Television. Ashley Robinson with the
museum says the plan is to enter through the south doors and exit through the north doors. But she's not sure they'll even get in since they'll be armed with Klingon swords and Stormtroopers blaster rifles after all. Contact: Robinson,ashley.robinson@...
Addendums by Steph:
BTW, I plan on going to the reception Thursday night. Will anyone else from this group be there?
Also, I plan on going the actual exhibit at the Museum this Saturday at 1 pm. Anyone want to come with? I've got it posted here:
I didn't catch that one but I'll be sure to check it out. Dr. Horrible at the Emmys? That is out'a sight! : )

We just found out that at least one group who emailed Ashley regarding participating, she never got their email, we think it's because of the firewall on her work email account. But she gave me her personal email to forward it to, so if any of you are interested, CC me and I'll forward it her personal email account too. Thanks!
Anyways, folks, those of you with sci-fi costumes, you know who you are, you should do this, it's going to be a lot of fun! And you'll be supporting the arts, supporting a local museum! Plus chance at the prize!!!!

Hello everyone!
As our exhibit is nearly complete (I have learnt that in sci-fi, men don't wear shirts, they wear "tunics"), I just wanted to let you know that the Museum is offering more prizes for the costume contest at our exhibit opening reception on Oct. 1st ... and since I figure some of you have awesome costumes, I wanted you to know what they are as you would be perfect shoe-ins:
Four suite tickets to the “Star Wars: In Concert” – a stage production of the movie saga score by a full orchestra and narrated by Anthony Daniels, the actor who portrayed C-3PO.
Domestic airfare through United Airlines. (Ticketing must be complete by 12/31/09, and travel must be complete by 3/31/10.)
Le Rivage/Scott’s Seafood package, which includes one night river view room accommodations, $100 Scott’s Seafood gift certificate and (1) 50 minutes Pure Relax Massage at Spa LaLe.
If anyone out there is able to help with my promo thing on Sept. 30th (during work hours - I know, it's tough), we can talk about free admission to this crazy decorated party and the Museum, in general. I would really like to get some people together for this! And if you can't do the day event, we would still love to get costumed people at the party the night of the 1st from 6-8pm.
Thanks so much!
Ashley

The California Museum in Sacramento is opening a new exhibit, "Out of this World: Extraordinary Costumes from Film and Television" in October, and they are looking for vounteers to wear their own favorite sci-fi costumes downtown near or at the museum on the morning of Sept. 30th (that's a Wednesday), to help promote and draw attention to the exhibit. And possibly do a few TV spots as an organized group that morning. Volunteers will get a free admission guest pass to the exhibit to use when it opens. If you are interested, contact Ashley.Robinson@...
Museum members will get the first glimpse of this exhibit on Thursday, October 1st at an "out of this world"opening reception (awesomely decorated as the monkey brains scene from Indiana Jones and the Cantina from Star Wars!). The guest wearing the most exciting sci-fi costume attire will receive free airfare from United Airlines! To become a Museum member, go to http://www.californiamuseum.org/support/become-a-member or contact the Development Department at (916) 653-1752 or charrell@.... The museum could really use your support! Also, the first 10 folks who volunteer & are accepted for the above mentioned costume promotion on Sept. 30 may qualify for a free admission to this reception (space permitting).
The exhibit runs October 3, 2009 through January 10, 2010 at the California Museum, 1020 O Street, Sacramento, CA 95814. This exhibition of costumes from Star Wars, Blade Runner, The Terminator, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica - and many more of the most popular films and television shows of all time - shows how costumes play a crucial role in defining characters for visual storytelling in media.
(there are also tabs to get more info on the museum on that page.)
Also, for those of you who are BofA bank members, there's Museums On Us, sponsored by Bank of America, which provides free admission on the first weekend of every month. One free admission will be granted to visitors who present a valid Bank of America check or credit card and their photo ID.
The Sac Whovians area also going to go see the new animated movie "9" tomorrow (Saturday) at 11 am at the Truxel Marketplace theater, per Sam's email below.
We timed it so you can do both (see "9" at 11 am and then come to my place for the "Being Human" screening at 2 pm) if you would like.
It's a two-fer this month: first, everyone's invited to a movie date at the Truxel Marketplace theatre (Truxel & I-80) for the first showing of '9' at 11. Then at 2, it's Steph's, where we'll have the first series of Being Human. Altogether, stuff is gonna go until 7 or 8, so if you're gonna do both, make sure to caffeinate appropriately.
For directions to Steph's if you've never been, send either one of us an email for the address.
Sam might also be announcing a group outing to go watch "9" at the first (early bird) showing Saturday morning so keep an eye out for that too; details TBD when the showtimes for "9" for Saturday are available. Since she's aiming for the first showing, there should be time for both activities. :)
I just saw a great film tonight -- "Nerdcore Rising" -- and you guys have a second chance to catch it this Sunday (Sept. 13, you know, the day after tomorrow, at 7 pm at the Guild Theater on Broadway).
Trust me, if you think of yourself as a geek or nerd or a gamer, or are friends with geeks/nerds/gamers, or are someone who appreciates music -- hip hop or otherwise, or even just someone who enjoys humorous and poignant documentaries, you need to see this!!!
The documentary focuses on MC Frontalot's first road tour, but the story is much more than that. It's about the creative process, about what it means to be a geek or nerd, about road trips, about the nature of fandom, about hip hop and pop culture. It has special guests such as Weird Al Yankovich, Prince Paul, and the guys behind Penny Arcade and more.
Really, just go see it. It's only five bucks. Like you have anything better to do Sunday night! :P

Can I ask you to please sign up there as I separate the interest between
Trekland on the new page and return the old one to “just” boring family and
classmates. If you'd jump over there—at “Larry Nemecek’s Trekland” you
can see my blog posts pop up from the Trekland site with video and interviews,
along with my Tweets and word of events, new gallery uploads and polls. It will
be much more fun for all of us non-boring people.
And spread the word! BTW--the new website itself is still growing at
larrynemecek.com ... and you can sign up there for the "real" (and not abusive!)

I have some "buy one, get one free tix" coupons for the fair that are good Friday only, email me at frellingbored@... and I'll fwd it to you if you want one.
Also, if you decide you are going to join us at the State Fair tomorrow (Friday), I plan to be there out front at around 3 pm-ish but because I'm taking someone with me I might be delayed. I'm definitely going, I just might not be able to pin down my exact arrival time.
If you want to meet up with us, I recommend calling my cell 530-417-3365 when you arrive or when you are ready to meet up so we can find each other, in case I am late. If you don't have a cell, then let me know beforehand, i.e. when you are leaving your home, and I'll try to give you an updated ETA. If you know you are going to be there later, perhaps we can pick a time to meet somewhere inside later.
Also, keep in mind, Scott, Bill and I will be walking around with videocams and audio recorders, so if you are not interested in that at all, you might want to walk around seperately.
But we will take a dinner break around 5 pm and I definitely want to try some fair food, so perhaps the best plan is the meet up in the food area around then? Again, let's try to coordinate this by cell phones. Or you can just keep an eye out for us in the food area around 5 pm :)

I've updated this Meetup to change our day to this Friday afternoon Sept. 4. Also, note we'll be going with a couple members of the Podcast Meetup to film the fair. You don't have to be in the film, but just explaining the presence of the videocams. :P
When: September 4, 2009, starting @ 3:00 PM
Where: Cal Expo, 1600 Exposition Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95815
If the changes affect your plans to attend, please take a moment to update
your RSVP. (You can RSVP "No" or "Maybe" as well as "Yes".)
We'll meet up in front at the ticket booths at 3 PM, or if you plan on coming earlier or later (i.e. after work) you can call or text my cell at 530-417-3365 at the fair to find out where we are when you arrive and arrange to meet up with us.
(The fair is open until 10 pm and the midway until midnight, btw, and this is the last weekend of the fair before it's last day on Labor Day Monday Sept. 7.)
The last email mentioned the Podcast Meetup. To learn more about that, go to meetup.com/podcast. Or email me. Thanks. Friday's visit to the fair will be joint but probably still a small group.

I'm for a Brit TV fan gathering in down town, since in most instances the Dr. Who gathering is little to far from where I live.

Hi, Cat,
I'm really getting into Being Human, great show! I enjoyed the UK's Life on Mars, and loved Coupling. I saw a little Jekyll, wasn't it a mini-series? It was good. I'm also a fan of Torchwood and the newer incarnations of Dr. Who. There's actually a local Dr. Who group you might be interested in. We usually what the newer Dr. Who and Torchwood but sometimes also other Brit TV. http://groups. yahoo.com/ group/doctor_ who_fans. I've CC'd them because there are Brit TV lovers on that group.
Thanks,
Steph

So, hi! I've been quiet thus far, but I really wanted to find out whether there were other folks who liked the British sci-fi/ fantasy scene. Of course, besides the obvious "Doctor Who" (in all his incarnations) and "Torchwood", I am a COMPLETE FREAK for "Life on Mars" (UK only, *not* the US version) and "Ashes to Ashes" -- those are my two fave shows -- as well as "Jekyll," "Being Human," and the short-lived, slightly lamentable "Demons."
Anyone else into "Life on Mars"/ "Ashes to Ashes"/ "Demons" -- I'm always up for a pint and a chat at Bonn Lair on J Street. ;-)
Wanna do video interviews? Or make a mini-movie? Wanna work behind the camera or in front of it? Got some equipment gathering dust in your closet or got some great ideas but just need a crew?
Let's get together on Sunday Aug. 30 at 3 pm for a Video Production meetup to meet each other and start brainstorming and planning our next video(s)!
We'll meet at my office lobby at 1600 K St., Sacramento, CA 95814(unmarked office building with the big brick courtyard on the corner of the 16th and K downtown.) Be on time so I can let you in to the locked building. Remember, parking is free downtown on Sundays.
Bring your video equipment so we can inventory what we resources we have.
3 pm to about 4 pm will be be a meet-and-greet; we'll discuss everyone's level of interest, skill and ideas.
Next, anyone who wants to present is welcome to do so, either demos, instructions, past videos etc. So if you want to demo video editing software, or a type of video you want to make, or show us how to do something, you'll have the chance. Bring whatever materials you'll need to do so, though we will have access to a computer, projector and big screen TV w/ DVD player in the office.
After the presentions, we can brainstorm more or play with our cameras, start filming, or break for dinner. Bring a little cash if you want to join us for dinner (probably around 6 pm).
To see 2 videos I've done, go youtube.com/frellingbored . (Just the 2 where I'm doing the interviews; I didn't do the BBQ commercial on that page, it's just a friend of mine is the groom in it so that's why that's there.)
This is a joint activity with "Sac Geeks" Meetup and "People Who Really Build Things" Meetup, so feel free to RSVP at either:
