Description

This is an umbrella email list for campaigns to promote instant runoff voting (IRV) in Oregon.

Under the current system, most elections don't require a majority to win. This means voters often feel compelled to vote against the candidate they most fear and so cast their vote for a leading candidate whom they regard as a lesser evil. With instant runoff, voters rank their preferences - 1, 2, 3. All the first choices are counted, just like they are now, and if anyone has a majority, they win, just like they do now. If none of the candidates has a majority, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and the votes are recounted. This continues until one candidate has a majority of the votes.

The Oregon state constitution explicitly states that preference voting systems like IRV are legal in Oregon, thanks to an initiative passed in 1908. (Article II, section 16.) IRV is used for public elections in San Francisco (CA) and Burlington (VT) and has been approved for use in Oakland (CA) and Minneapolis (MN). It's also been used continuously in Australia national elections for the past 80 years.
