Description

Also called The Extreme Violet Study Club, this group is an offshoot of the MAUD-L mailing list, created to have an in-depth discussion of some (potentially controversial) aspects of the Betsy-Tacy books by Maud Hart Lovelace. Discussion may address the BT characters, their real-life counterparts and the context of society during the period in which the books take place. What did it mean to be a "Perfectly Awful Girl"? Were Betsy and her friends as innocent of sexual activity, alcohol and drugs as the books may have portrayed? What aspects of racial interaction were left out of the books?

Some of the topics we have discussed include Race and Socioeconomic status in BT, Sexuality in BT, Religion in BT, Politics in BT and Gender roles in BT. If you have a special interest or topic that you would like to lead, please contact the moderator. In between specific topics, the group has a free-form discussion which may include politics, religion, current events, or other topics of interest.

All opinions are welcome and there are no taboo topics. The posts are not prescreened by the moderator. However, members are asked to focus opinions on the topics themselves, and avoid any type of personal attacks. In the case of personal attacks or "flames", list members may be warned that such behavior is not appropriate for this group and persons may be removed from the list. Forwarding posts from XBT to persons not on this list is not appropriate due to concerns regarding discussion rules and SPAM.

Any messages that are forwarded "chain letters" MUST be verified as accurate at Snopes.com before posting. Any persons who continue to do this after being specifically told to do so may be removed from the Extreme BT list.
