I learned about another and easier route going to Sagada, thru my Ifugao
tricycle tour guide,
the last time I was in Banaue around March 2002. He offered to bring me in his
tricycle to
Sagada, though for PHP 2,000 but don't want to afford it. Anyway, here it is…

WHY THIS ROUTE IS BETTER
1 You save around 2 or 3 hours of travel which you can use to tour Sagada,
compared
to the traditional route (Baguio-Sagada)
2 You arrive in Sagada early afternoon compared to the late afternoon using the
traditional route
3 You are more sure to get a ride going to Sagada than if you're in Baguio. The
latter,
upon arrival in Baguio, you have to fight for a space in the bus and will not be
sure to get one.
A friend of mine became victimized of pick-pocket during the foray
4 It is less challenging and heartbreaking as a route. In the traditional
route, you pass
by Halsema hiway w/c at some points is just 1-1/2 lane. During hairpin turns,
it is always a
fact that the rear tire of the vehicle is off the road and already hanging.
Want that experience?
5 The route is as scenic as the Baguio-Sagada route

WHEN TO GO TO SAGADA
The best time to go to Sagada is between Feb to May. June they say is the start
of their
rainy season, although the early part of June is still a good time. November,
during the
Halloween weekend is also a good time, but the place is full. If you intend to
go after
Christmas, to spend your new year there and experience the cold weather, reserve
early,
because the place is also full. Holy Week is not advisable as this is the time
the place is
brimming with people and you might not enjoy or would end up staying at St
Theodore's
Emergency Hospital, if you can't find accommodations (am not joking!)

HOW TO GET THERE
A Manila-Banaue
It is advisable to take Autobus. Autobus has their new terminal at Espańa
corner P Noval
(near Lerma-Morayta area). They allow advance bookings and you can buy your
ticket during
the day. If you are going there during summer season, it is advisable to buy
your ticket 3-5
days before the actual trip. If it is a weekend you want to hit Banaue, buy it
5-7 days before.
Autobus, has 1 trip daily to Banaue at 10 PM, but during summer, they add a 1030
PM trip.
During Holy Week and Halloween, weekend, they add a 3rd trip at 11PM. The
additional trips
are opened just 2 days before weekend. Thus, if you're going on a Friday or
Saturday night,
buy your ticket the Monday before. The trip takes 9 hours with 2-3 stops along
the way. The
bus is aircon, not as comfortable as Victory or Partas, but maybe in the league
of Dagupan
express. If you're a chance passenger, it means that you will have to sit
through the whole
trip in the aisle using mini-monoblock chairs. Be at the terminal an hour
before the trip so
that your sit will not be taken.

If you don't make it at autobus, there is Dangwa Transit in Dimasalang. They
also have aircon
bus going to Banaue and if you miss this, take the ordinary non-aircon bus.
They don't allow
advance bookings, thus, you have to purchase your ticket in the morning of the
trip to be
assured of a sit.

Fare? More or less around PHP 250 or thereabouts

B Arrival in Banaue
You will arrive in Banaue before 7AM, which is by the time you wake up. The bus
terminal or
depot is a kilometer outside the town. Upon arrival in Banaue, make sure that
you book your
return trip. The dispatcher will tell you there is no need for a deposit and
that can be trusted
because you sign in the manifest or seating plan. But, during peak days, if you
want to be
sure, you can make a deposit and ask for a receipt. Bus going back to Manila is
at 5 PM and
another one at 530PM if there are 2 trips. You have to go to town either by
foot power or
tricycle that can accommodate 4 pax. Remember, the fare there is PHP 5/pax. A
caveat in
Banaue, before boarding any transpo, you have to agree on the fare. Careful
here because
some drivers could overcharge you. If and when you are alone, you may pay for 2
passengers
but not 4.

It is advisable to go to People's Inn and take a quick breakfast here (try to
mind your timing,
you only have an hour for breakfast). People's Inn serves as a de facto
information and
meeting place of backpackers, thus this is recommended. There is also a bakery
here and it
is advisable that you purchase snacks and mineral water here before leaving for
Bontoc.
Why? Because if your jeepney gets a flat tire (which is common), at least you
don't get
hungry. Have a hurried breakfast and by the time you finish your breakfast, go
to the market
area (just a few steps to the left as you leave People's) and look for the
jeepney to Bontoc.
The last trip is at 830 or 9AM (they start at 6AM). Be sure to agree with the
conductor/barker
on the fare before boarding. Fare is around PHP80. we almost got duped, but
some
passengers argued, the last time I went there. Banaue-Bontoc takes 2 hours.
Advisable to
sit on the left side of the jeepney for a good view. If you feel like it and
are challenged, you
can offer to sit at the rooftop (am not kidding! Most Caucasian backpackers
love this).

An hour away from Banaue, on the left side, watch out for the town of Bay-o with
its mosaic
post-card perfect scenery. When you approach Bontoc, the jeepney will stop and
they start
collecting the fare. Advisable to give the exact fare. Ask the conductor to
bring you to the
Sagada jeepney station.

C Arrival in Bontoc
You will arrive in Bontoc just before 11AM. Try to take an early lunch before
the trip, again to
have a full stomach since you might have a flat tire. There are many jeepneys
going to
Sagada and the last trip is 4PM. Advisable to take the 12 Noon or 1Pm trip.
Here, it takes
forever to wait for passengers so the jeepney becomes full. Be patient. Want
to tour Bontoc?
Reserve it on your way back. I forgot how much the fare is, (30 or 40
bucks?), but the trip
takes an hour. Here, you have no choice but to sit inside the jeep since they
don't allow
'rooftop dwellers'. Pay as you board

ARRIVAL IN SAGADA
You will arrive in Sagada around 1 or 2PM. The first stop should be at the
Municipal hall to
register. This is also where you book your guide for the tour the following
day. Only get the
services of aq registered tour guides. The people here are quiet honest and
there are fixed
rates already for different types of tours. Try to take your pick.. the next
on your agenda
should be to buy a map of Sagada. This is available in any of the handicraft
stores or inns.
Then, check in at the hotel/inn/pension house of your choice. You can ask info
about lodging
facilities at the Municipal hall.

It is advisable that you leave the afternoon free for a walking tour around the
town and go to
the caves and other places, the following day (start at breakfast time so you
will have ample
time)

PLACES TO STAY
Try to get some tips here from the website www.travelphil.com

Also do not miss to take pancake or crepes or muesli for breakfast. The latter
depends on
seasonality. There is a Frenchman who bakes a very good French bread and sells
them at
Café Alfredo's he stayed in Sagada for good and pays his lodging by baking the
bread and
selling his paintings. He has been to Boracay but when he visited Sagada, he
was hooked
and never left.

PLACES TO GO
The Sagada map you will buy will outline these places. However, on the
afternoon of your
arrival, we recommend you spend this by going to visit the mission church, the
cemetery
(quiet an unusual one) behind the church, echo valley to view the hanging
coffins (find your
way from the cemetery), the Dap-ay (a place where the males and elders
gather-there are still
2 existing and in use and they have a story to tell), Masfere Studio (at the
entrance to the
town; a private museum of the late great photographer; open only when the wife
is there-just
knock and introduce yourself) which exhibits old pics of the mountain people,
caves, hanging
coffins, waterfalls, rice terraces, etc. try to visit also their 3-door public
market behind the
town hall (unusual?). market day in Sagada is Saturday and peole come here to
buy/sll
produce.

When you tour Sagada, start right after breakfast so you can cover a lot. Have
an early
breakfast at 6 AM or right after the Episcopal Service (if you wish to attend
this at 6AM-an
experience). Order packed lunch and bottled water for you, your companions and
your guide
to bring along during your tour. To go to the caves, if there is a need for
flashlights, your guide
can supply but with an extra charge.

Getting around is by hiking. If you choose to ride, you have to pay for the
vehicle's services.

WHAT TO BUY
t-shirts, postcard to mail home from Sagada (post office is in the Municipal
Hall), beads,
crafts, mountain tea, mountain coffee, etc.

Around PHP 1500-2500 is good enough to include some shopping. If you stay
another day in
Banaue, then that is another budget. Lodging rates in Sagada is cheap.

COMMUNICATIONS
Smart is the only mobile network that has cell sites in Sagada and Bontoc.
There is internet
in Sagada (PHP90/hr) powered by smart satellite. There is no cell site in
Banaue

GOING HOME
We suggest you start early. Take your breakfast by 6 or 630AM. By 7AM, board
the jeepney
going to Bontoc. You will be there by 8AM. Spend 2 hours going around Bontoc,
buying
crafts from the market, if you like. Do not miss the Bontoc Museum (ask around
for
directions), which has a very good collection and exhibit for all the Igorot
tribes. It is very
comprehensive and worth a visit.

Before boarding a jeepney for Banaue, it is advisable to take an early lunch
(Pines Kitchenette
near the Town Hall is the only good one). Try to board the jeepney to Banaue
around 10 or
11AM to reach there by 1PM. Sit on the right side of the jeepney or the rooftop
for a better
view. If the jeepney stops at Mt Polis, it is advisable you get off to admire
the view and take
pictures.

Upon your arrival in Banaue, go to People's Inn. Try to leave your gear there
and tour Banaue
(they allow it and it's safe-just inform the clerk there) given the time that
you have, you can
go to Bocos rice terraces, Tam-an Village or Poi-tan Village or viewpoint (where
the famous
postcard view of the terraces was shot). Tam-an Village is 254 steps down from
the
swimming pool of Banaue Hotel. The tricycle drivers can also serve as your tour
guide,
making sure you agree on the price first. If you want a little adventure, go
to Poi-tan village
and then hike using the trail, towards Tam-an village. This takes around 1.5
hrs.

If you stay for 1 night in banaue, try to catch the 8PM performance (for free)
of Ifugao dances
at the lobby of Banaue Hotel then go back to your hotel on foot.

By 330Pm you should be back at People's Inn. Try to take a heavy
merienda/dinner and by
415 at the most, take a tricycle to the bus station. Bus leaves for Manila at
5PM and pay
your fare the moment you arrive at the station.

Enjoy the adventure!

Manny.

What about some changes in our text:

It's all about exploring the vast wonders of landscapes and
seascapes of the Philippines... mingling with different people and
cultures... and having a taste of different cuisines from various
parts of the country.

This is the hub for sharing ideas, information, tips and images of
places members have explored. And better yet, how to fit it all in a
tight budget.

Come meet fellow travel enthusiasts and explore the Philippines now!

if only the next Amazing Race season
would come here then it's more exciting for us...

imagine the pairs to navigate the "chaotic" streets of our country :)

but I think they're still too blinded by the negative travel
advisories...

btw, still 14 members here, i just invited my friends to join us
if they like...

Looking forward for the Amazing Race 4. I was disappointed it's a bit
delayed here due to technical reasons. I heard it would be shown in

just curious:

where is the pic of the falls at the yahoogroups site?

another one: just to request the group to keep your english
straight, I mean no tagalog sentences as much as possible...

the reason: we have guests here - big Jim from down under and the others

hey Jim, ever wondered or understood english interspersed with tagalog
as most of us here seem to based in Manila...

i hope in the future, this list will grow including many foreigners...
i think i can advertise this to the expats...

unplanned trips are really exciting! talk about Amazing Race
on AXN!

if you've read the Laguna travelogue in the files section, another
one.

My Baguio adventure was really unplanned...we were actually
going to Mangatarem, Pangasinan for I wanted to go to the
Hundred Islands and just proceed to baguio...at first I was able to
confirm 12 who'd come with us but a few days before the date, my friends begged
off one-by-one...even my friend from Pangasinan on the date of "departure"...

I decided not to cancel th trip for I promised not to...there were only three
of us who went to baguio that night...chance passenger at Victory
Liner (too many people), no hotel reservations, and others...

but it turned out fun! We proved to the others that even if we're only three,
it always up to us to enjoy!

I felt I was competing in Amazing Race!

I have a travelogue but it's still rough...hope to finish and shorten it later

sarap mamasyal!

TITO - hi there! actually, as i've mentioned in my
earlier e-mail, we went to sagada not knowing what to
expect from there. basta, we heard lang from friends
that there are caves to explore and mountains to trek.
period. so, with no other information at hand, we went
to baguio. we asked around as to how we will get to
sagada, sabi sa amin, just go to dangwa. when we got
there, we asked some people again. sus! since it was
holy week, pamatay pala para makasakay ng bus... and
we also didn't know that the trip would take 6 hours!
just imagine the shock of our lives... that was our
very 1st adventure trip so everything was
unexpected... we're not really maarte when it comes to
travelling, but you also have to consider that we're
city girls... we're not used to that kind of
travelling. hindi pa aircon! after 6 hours, the bus
finally stopped and half of the passengers went down
na. tapos kami, nde namin alam kung sagada na nga ba
yun? we were asking each other, ito na ba yun? asan na
yung cave? ito na ba yung mountain? since we don't
know anything, we all took our bags and readied
ourselves to get off the bus... buti na lang, may
naawa sa aming isang pasahero... and explained to us,
that we were not in sagada yet. parang one town away
pa kami... hinatid lang kasi yung ilang pasahero dun
sa town na yun dahil marami naman sila... syempre, by
the time this was explained to us, marami nang ibang
pasaherong nakarinig. hehehe! kaya when we finally get
to sagada, almost all the passengers told us that
we're already in sagada... nakakahiya tuloy! :P

our camiguin trip was also unplanned... but we did
search for other info e.g. the places we should visit.

MANNY - hi there! i think there was already an
invitation made by... hmmm... i forgot na eh
(sorry!)... there was an e-mail in philippines-travel
re: the instructions on how to join
explore-philippines. pero sige, i'll do this one
again... another thing, i think some of the silent
members have joined the expore-philippines na rin coz
i've approved some e-mail addresses and names which
are not familiar with me. i presumed, galing sila sa
philippines-travel. as for the files, i think we need
to transfer this manually... as in one by one...

sabine-so far so good. thanks for moderating. i actually posted the
question about sagada i think last year pa. anyways, i wanna go back
there.

sabine, tito and ferdz -actually, i've been to sagada april last year
and plan to go back there next month or june. but they say june is
already considered rainy season in that part. i took the
banaue-bontoc-sagada route. i will post the 'tips' including the
closest time frame, to add to the information ferdz posted. just have
to go back to my notes. it was just bad that on the second day in
sagada, it rained, so i was not able to tour, but slept half of the
day in a very cool weather (sarap!). thus, i plan to go back there
this year and hopefully have time to do banaue also next month and
explore other parts of the gran cordilleras within the year.

i actually go on planned trips so as to save time and cost, as sabine
has said. maybe we should put sagada on our list of plans.

ferdz-the tips you gave on banaue, banagan and batad transpo are quiet
good and all those things should go into our files section for future
reference. your info about Pilipinas Sierra's "Friendship Climb" is a
good one. looks interesting. i might bite it, will just have to
look at the itenerary.

Hello Cha

Thankyou very much, this is great information.

A slow boat doesn't bother me at all if it has activities or
facilities like a karaoke machine and a bar.

I really have to travel from Palompon Leyte. The boat is cancelled
now (I think that it sank)but there used to be a boat that went to
Manila and stopped at Dumaguit on the way. In 1995 it only cost about
P400 per person, one way with meals included, to sleep in a first
class cabin with private balcony and private CR. If the boats you
mentioned are anything the same as the boat from 1995, I will be very
happy.

Ciao! Nice to see we are now 14 members! I updated my profile for
the first time, hope you guys can do the same. And oh yes, just to
let you know I changed my Yahoo account name (from cristydax to
travellnut) but it's still the same me (just wanted to filter out
lotsa junk!).

About Sagada, I once did a Manila-Banaue-Sagada-Baguio-Manila loop.
With the stop in Baguio for a few days rest and relaxation (travel
is tiring too!). And fortunately I have free accommodations in
Baguio. :)

Manila to Banaue can be taken by Dangwa Bus (Cubao - 4101991,
Dimasalang - 7312879) and/or Auto Bus Transport (Sampaloc - 7436870,
6436873). Then like others have mentioned Banaue to Sagada via
Bontoc, is by jeepney. There are many. Then Banaue to Baguio is by
mini-bus.

I normally plan my longer trips too. Especially with time and budget
constraints, it becomes more 'sulit'. But with Banaue and Sagada, I
don't remember making any plan at all. Many of these little cheap
hotels are not advertised, nor are bus/jeepney schedules set
definitely (they leave when they're full!).

In Banaue, if you want cheaper accommodations, there are several
small and simple inns and pension houses (non-aircon but many with
private baths) which you can easily spot when you get off the bus
(it's a one main street town). There are also some Igorot native
huts close to Bangaan that offer cheap and very basic lodging
(popular with long-staying foreigners and backpackers).

For Sagada, simple accommodations are very cheap too. You could try
any of the following: Mapiya-aw Pension House, Green House, St.
Joseph's Resthouse, Ganduyan Inn, Sagada Igorot Inn, Masferre Inn,
and Country Inn.

Others...
The 3 main rice terraces are: Banaue Viewpoint (5 mins by tricycle),
Banga-an and Batad. For Banga-an/Batad, hire a jeepney and guide for
a nice full day's hiking.

In Sagada, I think it's already been mentioned, get an official
guide to the caves. It's the only way you'll get in.

Happy trekking to Banaue-Sagada!

From what I've heard, it's much faster going to Sagada via Banaue. I
haven't been to Sagada, but when we did the Banaue, Batad, Bangaan
trip. We had a help from this guy who said he was Tom Cruz (who
becomes penelope cruz by night) at the "Greenview Lodge and
restaurant" in Banaue who arranges transportations to Batad or Sagada.
He was quite helpful as he managed to reserve tickets to us back to
Manila without a Hassle. And you can haggle with the price of tranpo
with the driver if you are travelling in numbers

Last time we were there the Jeep to Sagada was going to leave by 9AM.
And it would only take 2 hours to get there. I think I still have his
contact # here somewhere ....

hi tito! actually, i, myself is planning to go to
sagada, if not in may, maybe by june. i haven't tried
the banaue-sagada route yet but it'll be nice to try
this one soon, since we took the baguio-sagada route
before. if my guess is right, with a 1,500 to 2,000
budget for 3 to 4 pax, we can stay in sagada for 2
nights and three days.... or less gastos pa ata, blown
up na yung 1,500 to 2,000.

but i could only bluff on the other info kasi i was
there nung 2000 pa. best way for you is to contact
sagada environmental guides association (sega) through
their e-mail address: sega2619@.... you can
probably refer your queries to davis daiwey since he
was our guide when we went there. just tell him na
lang that you were referred by 'barok.'

you can ask davis or any other guides re: the routes
and other jeepney skeds.

i don't go for unplanned trips kasi coz usually, that
entails cost. sayang naman yung matitipid if things
were planned out carefully. but it's also ok to be on
the go sometimes with no info at all. as a matter of
fact, we went to sagada without knowing what we would
encounter there. nagkamali pa kami ng bababaan sa
mountain province! hehehehe! same thing goes with our
camiguin travel. things got out of hand lang in
camiguin that's why we started planning things in
bohol na...

maybe we should include the sagada trip in our list of
plans :)

barok

p.s.
thanks for the compli, but you're also a moderator (i
made you one, remember? and so does manny, mike and
ferdz. you can also approve those who wanted to join
the e-group.

Some of you may be interested in Pilipinas Sierra's "Friendship Climb"
in Aurora. Some of my friends have been in Aurora, Baler and the
Pictures they took were great. Check out:

The images looks great. I may join them if I like their Itinerary for
this one. It's only P875 per pax.

MANNY - hi! i was browsing through the Holy Week
e-mail yesterday and i came across one of your e-mails
sent through our website. aside from the batanes
inquiry, you also asked re: banaue-sagada route. at
that time, i didn't have that much information. have
you been to sagada na ba? just in case you haven't
been there yet, there's are jeepneys that ply the
banaue-bontoc-sagada route. in banaue, there are
jeepneys that go to bontoc, and they usually leave
early, around 730 am. the ride takes 2 to 3 hours. in
bontoc, there are also jeepneys going to sagada. i'm
not so sure with the sked though. but i think, it'll
be in conjunction w/ the sked from those coming from
banaue, di kaya? hope this helps.

Hi Jim,

I believe the following shipping lines have direct routes from Cebu
to Panay (my guess is Iloilo will be the destination)
    - Trans-Asia Shipping Lines, Cuenco Ave. (phone:2546491-98)
    - Cocaliong Shipping Lines, Don Serging Osmena Ave. (2327211-18)
However, these routes could last for 15 hours! Add the bus ride to
Caticlan of around 6 hrs, a whopping total of 21 hrs! =(

A faster (not to mention more scenic) way is to take a fast ferry
from Toledo, Cebu to San Carlos, Negros (around 2 hrs. via Anzar
phone:2335915-18). Cut through the province by going to Bacolod by
bus (roughly 3.5 hrs) and by taking another fast ferry from Bacolod
to Iloilo (1 hr). Actually, there are a lot of fast ferries, but
I'll just provide one, the Sea Angels of Negros Navigation
(phone:7098971). Then proceed to Caticlan via bus (6 hrs.), totaling
to 12 hrs on the road..

Now, I haven't done this route myself, so I can't really say if one
is indeed better than the other.

Btw, all phone numbers are for cebu except for that of Sea Angels
which is for Bacolod.

Happy exploring!

Regards,
Cha

thanks, sabine, for taking the initiative. i think you did the poll
quiet fast. take a bow!

ferdz--thanks for forwarding the corregidor tips to this site. we now
have something to start on

kristine--i suggest you also re-post the database you created at the
old site, to this site. my suggestion, though, is to add another
column, in case a member has a website. so the said website address
can be posted.

have a wonderful week, everyone!

Finally, no more "quota messages". hehe. Thanks Sabine for creating
the group. Need some suggestions for the following:

1. I made a temporary text description in our homepage. If anyone can
make a better "Copy" please post it.

2. Shutterbugs out there please send you photos for our homepage
cover. We will rotate those images in either monthly or weekly. Please
send at this email "ferdz@...". It doesn't have to be an
award winning shot but something you enjoy and shows well the place
you've been.

I think that's about it for now.

no need to unsubscribe from the old group. as tito
explained, for a certain period of inactivity, that
yahoogroup will "self-destruct" hehehehe....

as for the database, maybe we can do that in the files
section. create folders for each province, same thing
with the photo sections, instead of creating folders
based on the user name or member name...

Thanks Sabine! Now that we have set up things better, maybe we can
now think of a way to organize our databases, photos, files... etc.
My suggestion is to organize them by 'place' for easy referencing in
the future. Also, we can start to invite other 'explorers' to join
the group...

Btw, do we have to unsubscribe to that old group?
