robparnell's Easy Way to Write Critique Group affords the opportunity to get your short works read and commented on by other writers. Feel free to join and contribute.
Here are the guidelines for critiquing work:
1. Just like Charles Kingsley once said: ‘Do as you would be done by.’
2. Give and expect mutual respect and think like a professional.
3. If you can’t say anything good, don’t say anything at all.
4. Ideally, group members can offer assistance by critiquing on three levels:
i) Technical – Spelling, Tense, Grammar, POV etc
ii) Specific – Characterisation, Consistency, Sense of Place etc
iii) General – Plot, Themes, Style, Presentation etc
5. Everyone has a right to an opinion, which is as valid as anyone else’s.
6. Everything works in principle - as long as the fiction is convincing to the reader.
7. There are no rules in fiction that cannot be broken, if done well!
8. In good fiction, there are no clichés, only ‘accepted conventions’.
9. As a group, we should do our best to encourage innovation, originality and to help a writer find his or her own voice and style.
10. Plagiarism is never an acceptable activity.
11. The key to a writer’s success is confidence. It is therefore up to all group members to offer encouragement and assistance to improve the well-being and self-esteem of their fellow members.
12. Members are encouraged to contribute tips on writing technique. This might include posting the titles of books on writing that might be helpful to other members.
13. Be humble, considerate and respectful at all times.
14. We must try to achieve and encourage constant improvement.
