Thanks Barb for your kind feelings. And just to let you and the
other Webheads know that TESOL 2006 is going to be in Tampa, where I
hope that we could all meet again virtually and face-to-face, :-)

Hi Rita and John (recent writers) and all other webheads,

I've just finished my two days of presentations at TESOL. Thu night I
drove up to Austin to spend the night at my sister's and leave Dusty
at his friend's. He's heading back to California and I fly this
afternoon from Houston and back to Hong Kong.

Previously at TESOL conferences I and most other webheads have simply
commandeered computers at the sessions we've presented at, but this
time IP addresses were needed in advance and were in short supply.
That's why Wed morning we were not able to connect from our session
introducing EVOnline. We ended up helping passers by to browse the
sites. Our famous elderdinner with e-Bob went great for those present
in San Antonio and maybe less so for those online due to lighting and
other logistical issues involving trying to eat at a restaurant with
waiters needing to come between you and electrical and usb cables and
so on.

This brings us to Thu a.m. and the CALL Academic Session. The day
before I had webcast a CALL business meeting just to try out the
connections and software I'd be using. I had my fixed IP courtesy of
TESOL by then, and I was just checking connections. I had also been
to the SmartCity internet provider checking bandwidth and adding to
our equipment order a hub with two cables so we could network two
computers at the same time (so I could keep one webcasting). So all
was in order for the academic session. I arrived at the room an hour
early and had the chat going as the audience filed in, so people
online were interacting with the audience before the session started
and some were even coming from the audience to say Hi and Hola to our
participants onine.

As is usual with Webheads demos the session was already underway when
Susan Gaer got up to introduce us. At the last minute before starting
myself I thought to turn on the recorder. I now need to find the
recording. Any ideas where I can find it?

The session itself? The part with Aiden and Michael went flawlessly.
We had audience coming to the podium to ask questions on mic and web
cam, good questions too. The interface between the 100 people there
and the online presence couldn't have been better. We played
Michael's song Happy Online and I think it captured the moment
perfectly. There was plenty of time for a breezy and impressive
presentation. Audience feedback suggested that many had been blown
away, yet my point in my presentation was that familiarity with the
medium fostered in a community of practice is what makes it all so
effortlessly possible.

This was followed by Deborah Healey's animated delivery on the latest
CALL-applicable software and Jim Duber's showing of the 'flash'y stuff
he's been working on. There were only two online participants around
(but still 100 in the tesol audience) to hear Karen Price talk about
things available now, like 3-D printing, that can be applied to
language learning, and how the most important ingredient is still the
human one. How true. It was all recorded and hoping to find it later
and have it available.

Meanwhile I'm heading for Hong Kong and then home, and I need to get
driving to Houston, so I'll just say now that Webheads have got to be
the most fun and most cohesive force in TESOL right now. I thought
the early days of the CALL interest section were among the best I
experienced with a group due perhaps to combination of youth and
principled brashness, but Webheads are keeping me still youthful (and
others, such as Elizabeth, as well!!) and I appreciate so much the
chances to interact with all of you, and wish I didn't have to leave
the conference midway through.

But I have to be at work in Abu Dhabi on Monday. So till then, and
with heartfelt thanks to all,

Vance

Ok, I am home. Tired, blurry eyed and blurry eared from all I have
seen and heard, but excited and full of hope for the future.

I'm told that the next Fiesta will be in Florida at next year's
TESOL, so I am out this morning looking for some sort of plastic
sleeves to protect all the sensitive computer equipment from the sand
on the beach where the next Webhead Fiesta will be held. I am also
looking for a bright flower print festive shirt to match my big black
Stetson cowboy hat.

Seriously, I have but on few other occasions had that much
fun...meeting everyone, seeing all the online activity....and you
know what, that is still just the first phase. Over the next few
days, I hope photos will be sent to be posted to the site, maybe
audio, maybe video and surely people will send in their thoughts and
memories of this event.

I must apologize to those who tried to join us virtually and couldnt
for a variety of reasons. All I can say is to remember that we are
sort of breaking new ground here. I think we learned a lot from this
experience and many things will be changed before the next one
occurs. But at the same time, I think a lot of folks went away
seeing meet-ups like this in a new light. I hope we see many more
such event from around the globe in the future. I was so busy that I
hardly had time to get online with anyone, so I really still dont
know how many actually communicated via the net. However, I can tell
you that at one point, we had five laptops hooked up via WiFi and
everyone was busy with someone or some group on line. It was truly
awesome. Vance is right about they way we arranged the tables, but
our restaurant host, Radniq had never seen anything like this before,
and I am sure he learned a lot too (like next time, setting us up in
an ally out back so we wont disturb the rest of his clientele.) I
think we learned a lot about what kind of place we need to host such
and event and about how to set up WiFi so that it functions well.

In the next couple of days, I will be posting more information
including photos of the event to the blog
(http://elderboblog.typepad.com/fiesta ) so keep watching.

And please, please, please....If you were there or you were online,
please take the time to add a comment or even send me an email or a
picture and I will see to it that it gets posted. I want the blog to
be a part of the event itself, sort of a repository of artifacts of
the event.

Now, I have to unpack, but I promise more later.

Again, thanks to everyone who participated, especially those who
contributed their laptops and expertise with them. And special
thanks to all attending live or otherwise.

elderbob

PS. For those that were there live, I hope you are still enjoying
your Extreme Texas Makeovers.....more Kisses and Hugs to you all.

Hi gang--

This has been one of the most exciting TESOL
conferences yet! I wish you all could have been in the
room to hear Karen Price's talk on totally WOW
computer technology of the 21st century: a pen where
you can draw a calculator on a piece of e-paper and
then tap the buttons to add and multiply, etc. It's
going to be for sale in Sept. in the US. (My
prediction--the paper will be expensive.)

Then the 3D "printer" which creates solid plastic
objects from two dimensional drawings--Karen passed
them around to play with--and they have moving parts
too! I've seen this advertized online already.

New voice/speech recognition tools that are ever more
sophisticated. And the list goes on. She'll have a
Webpage soon on it.

I should mention our newly active Webhead, who was
also displaying cool stuff in the same session. Jim
Duber has created some great multimedia sites. He
promised to send the group the addresses where we
could help with Beta testing--so come on, Jim! We
might have our own video-voice-text chat room created
by him, eh?

Vance's presentation on technology of the future, as
you might expect, was the highlight of the whole
conference. I keep hearing people talk about it in the
halls. The Wow factor was 12 on a scale of 1-10. Thank
you, all you Webheads who managed to get "there" with
him--it really made the whole thing outstanding. Vance
is expecting many more Webheads to join the group
soon.

My general impression of the conference as a whole is
that (1) communities of practice are being noticed and
are being demanded. One presentation on writing
suggested forming a global community to share ideas. I
had to tell her there were a couple already--beside
study.com, my Academic_writing YG that several of you
Webheads are already getting a lot of use out of, and
Vance's Writing for Webheads. And (2) there are lots
of cool authoring tools showing up. I'm going to work
up a little list and maybe we can try them out during
our TI chats? Some really neat stuff.

And thank you, again, Elderbob for a wonderful evening
of Webcamming, great food, excellent wine, and F.U.N.
The Virtual Fiesta was an event to remember for a long
time to come. I'll upload my photos to my blog ASAP,
and you can either pick some off there, or link to
them. Don't know if I'll make Tampa, but Hawaiian
shirts will definitely be de rigeur.

There is one more half-day of the conference, plus the
CALL IS Planning Meeting for next year. Feels like
everything is definitely winding down.

I'm staying on in San Antonio for another week to
visit friends, but will try to catch up with
Webheads-- Micheal's song was haunting my sleep last
night -- I may have grey hair, but I don't care -- I'm
happy online. I guess it's the Webheads theme song,
eh?

Great to see you "here."

Hugs to everyone--
--Elizabeth

Hello all,

I was online during Vance's presentation as I was invited to say a few words on
my "Happy Online" project. Vance was on site early so we had a chance to test
our equipment before the big event. People started popping up like mushrooms and
it didn't take long, the room was packed. Vance the man was so busy that he
almost forgot to record his own session. It was not until I mentioned that I'll
be recording the audio when he remembered that he was to do the same. He was
simply too happy to be online ;-) Anyway, I did manage to record the session but
I messed up the other half of the recording when I plugged in my earphones. I
lost the sound from Texas and I only captured the sound from my mic :-( Another
lesson for me! I also uploaded the snapshots that I took during this
presentation, and they're available at http://newspix.buzznet.com/ Elderbob, can
I upload these snapshots to your blog? How?

Anyway, thanks Vance for webcasting this wonderful event. I had the chance to
watch and listen to Deborah Healy's and Jim Duber's excellent presentations. I
also recorded their presentations but nothing came out of it. Anyone here using
Real Player 10? I used it to capture audio and my setting was to capture from
sound mixer. But why didn't it capture sound when I plugged in my earphones?
'extremely puzzled and frustrated- those were good presentations -arrrggh.

It's Saturday noon here and filial duties are calling. I'll be offline for the
day.

Cheers,

aiden

Dear Nacer--
The best way to learn about concordancing is to try it
out. Go to this online site for a good tutorial:
The Compleat Lexical Tutor <http://132.208.224.131/>
It also gives information about various ways for a
teacher to use this online concordancer with your own
electronic documents--and why.

For the first question, I don't know if you would want
to use the computer as a tutor, but you can see an
example at my Academic Writing group
<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Academic_writing>
You will have to join the group and then go to the
FILES area. Open the file "Constructing the
Paragraph."

I am sure that other Webheads will answer at more
length, too.

Cheers--
Elizabeth

Since we just had spring holidays and I had been overworking for a
long time, I went on a much-needed trip with my family and left the
computer behind -- and it felt great, I can tell you! ;-) But now
that I'm back I see that my computer has been avenged, and that I
have missed the (virtual) Webhead Fiesta! :-(

Anyway, many thanks to those (like Vance and Elderbob) who have sent
messages to the list, to tell us what happened; could those of you
who were there please send URLs to your Fiesta blogs, photoblogs,
etc. if possible, to help us visualize what was going on there?
Thanks!

Hope to meet you next year in Florida!

Susan Marandi

P.S. I think what made me really feel sorry that I'd missed the
fiesta was reading Elderbob's colorful descriptions; he made it
sound like so much fun!

Fantastic photos Elizabeth - thank you. And you're looking great!

And as for "Happy Online" being the Webheads theme song - I like the idea,
but it might need to be edited. Some of the lyrics are quite sad....

But the photos made me wish I was there.

Dear Elizabeth and all Webheads,

Wow! What great photos! Thanks for sharing! Just like Maria, I wish I'd been
there with you all! :-)

I got back home on Friday afternnon after a ten-day trip to Spain with Joao that
took us to Seville, then to meet Maria and her family at a Southern beach resort
near Cadiz, then for a lovely day with with Daf and her sisters-in-law - we had
a lovely homemade fideua, a paella but with small macarroni instead of rice, and
then dinner at a lovely seaside Mexican restaurant. From there we went on to
Barcelona and Valencia. Unfortunately, we didn't get to meet Daf again. On the
way back through Madrid, we stopped for a very short visit at Aranjuez with its
lovely palace and the narrow Tejo River (the river that flows through Lisbon)
flowing right next to it, and another short stop in Toledo just to get an idea
of the city. (Maria, we didn't call you because we couldn't stay there.) We
drove all the way into Portugal that day and stayed at a lovely Pousada, the
equivalent to the Spanish Parador, and returned home the following late morning.

We had a lovely time, fabulous weather and great food. We loved seeing Maria and
Daf. Photos will be up soon!

Our next trip to Spain will be to the North: Santiago de Compostela and,
hopefully, Bilbao, to see the Guggenheim.

I missed all the Webheads events in San Antonio - congrats to all, especially
Vnace and Elderbob -, but I needed to get away from it all for a few days.
Cybercafes always stayed at a distance! It did me a world of good and I'm now
preparing next week's lessons. The third and last term starts tomorrow.

Hugs all,

Teresa

Hello Everyone!

I just got back from San Antonio and am still brimming with energy from a
terrific conference! The Webheads Fiesta was an event to remember--living a
dream of meeting webheads in action. Thank you so much, Elderbob, for pulling
this event off.

I attended a number of stimulating sessions including Vance's cast of Webheads
with the Future of CALL and Elizabeth's panel telling us about the innovative
uses of video and media, and so many more. My own presentation was well received
despite being scheduled for late Friday afternoon. Volunteering a couple of
hours in the EV was very fruitful as I picked up more hints of online tools. The
most frustrating part of TESOL is always that there is so much to do in such a
short period of time. The decision to attend one session is a decision not to
attend 25 others, but that has always been the excitement and frustration of
TESOL conferences. I love the networking--meeting up with former colleagues,
connecting with new colleagues and finding out what's new (and still the same)
in the field.

I'll send some of my pics to Elderbob for him to post, but in the mean time I
did put my San Antonio pics on a Webshots page. You can view them at
http://community.webshots.com/user/webheadfiesta or
http://tinyurl.com/6xy26
Unfortunately, I couldn't find a way to put the pics in a logical order using
Webshots, so be patient through the first few--most of the shots of webheads are
at the end. Technology still has a ways to go.

The day after tomorrow I'm leaving on a trip to Mexico and Costa Rica so I will
be relying on cyber cafes for my internet and webhead fixes. There are so many
things to take care of before I leave, but first on the list was to post these
pictures and thank Elderbob and the whole Webhead crew. Webheads rule!

Jane, briefly in Montreal

Thanks for making us feel so welcome and for arranging such a wonderful
get-together!

All the best,

Jim, everyone,

I got the url for the recording. It starts pretty much with the webheads
event, Buth hosting, and after a couple of hours, 4:47 to be more or less
exact, my presentation kicks in. I haven't see the others except I watched
into Jim's so his is ok.

You can drag the pointer to the right time to start. Instructions are at
this url:

Enjoy,

Vance

Hugs all,

Teresa

Hi Webheads;
Check this out! Great presentations, and free! Using HorizonWimba I
think... I'm beginning to see the advantages
of recorded presentations -- one can't participate in the discussion,
but one can stop, back up, look more
carefully at the graphs, powerpoint slides etc., take notes,
restart.... On the whole, better imho. What do you
think?

P.S. Many thanks to Elderbob for the great fiesta and salutations to
all the Webheads who were in Texas virtually or
really!

Since I have the right connection now I will try to complete and
publish a page created earlier to share with you photos of the
Fiesta as well as other Activities done by Webheads at TESOL 2005.

FYI, I'd been trying to post you an email since yesterday via
wireless and DSL connections, available at two Airports in the US
and a hotel in the City; however, due to a number of glitches on my
end as well as on that of servers I was trying to use. Fortunately,
Steve, the IT support guy in a hotel where I'm staying here in the
Big Apple, just solved the problem which was due to the interference
of other IPs here with mine!

I will be staying in NYC for a couple of days to spend some good
time with my daughter who lives and works here as you all know; and
should be back home and actually at my desktop in my room at work on
Saturday, April 9.

Best regards,

Buth

The day after tomorrow I'm leaving on a trip to Mexico and Costa Rica so I
will be relying on cyber cafes for my internet and webhead fixes. There are so
many things to take care of before I leave, but first on the list was to post
these pictures and thank Elderbob and the whole Webhead crew. Webheads rule!

   Jane, briefly in Montreal

Hi Elizabeth, and everyone who's posted pictures of San Antonio. Just want to
let you know how much I'm enjoying the photos. They radiate energy and
enthusiasm.
And if you're reading this Elderbob, (and Buth and Vance and other people whose
names I don't even know) thank you too, for giving those of us who couldn't be
there a chance to participate through the Fiesta, which started well before
anyone got to the restaurant. (I was one of the lucky ones who got in through
Learning Times).

Cheers,
Wendy

I'm glad to hear you say this. One of my goals and guiding principles has
been, from the outset, to allow remote attendance at conferences for people
who really can't get there, and that's a lot of people. There are many
advantages to actually being there of course (you can taste the wine for
example, talk to the people, socialize, negotiate, interview for jobs,
describe your next book to publishers, see the products) but for the flavor
of what's there, some of the actual presentations, the blogged impressions
of participants, it looks like we're getting there almost.

I just got an announcement that Google will be hosting video-blogging (=
"vlogging"!)-that would be great for our future endeavors of "remote

Chrissan asked about KodakGallery--

It is actually Ofoto.com which was "absorbed" by
Kodak. It seems to have no limit on the number of
photos and I've been linking slideshows there to my
blog using html addresses. Seems to work faultlessly.
And, you can snitch the photos by
right-clicking/double-clicking and "Saving image as"
or taking a screenshot.

The photos you upload are automatically converted to a
smaller format, but the prints are excellent and their
shipping service is quick. Easier for me than going to
the drugstore to get prints.

I think you need to purchase prints now and then for
them to keep your account active, and I do purchase
them, so haven't had the problems others report with
albums disappearing (yet).

BTW--wanted to mention that I also made a short movie
of Vance's presentation, which I'll have to mount from
home where I have a faster connection. I'll also have
a short article on my video presentation in the VDM IS
Newsletter. Stay tuned for coming attractions.
