   Hi,
I hate to do this but I'm getting desperate. I'm
four votes shy of earning a Diamond Award for my web
site, but I need the four votes before Dec. 31st.
It's pretty stupid, I'm not even sure what a Diamond
award is and the think most of the other winners are
more technologically advanced than my site. But I'd
like to get it since I'm so close and have no other
   awards.

If you've been to my site and like it and don't mind
doing this, please go to the home page
http://www.eslhome.com , scroll down to the icon of
the Diamond and click on it. A new page will open and
you'll be asked to vote yes or no for my site. Anyone
can vote -- your students, your friends, even your
   mother!

I have already requested this action from the people
who link to my site and one of them reported me for
SPAM! So I guess that's not the best way to go.

   Anyway, thanks very much.
   Arlyn

Thank you to everyone who voted, it's such a wonderful
feeling to have this kind of support. I made my quota
and 'won' my award, the next level of the award
requires 400 votes so I'll never reach that level
unless every vistor to my site votes.

It's rather silly, these web awards. Does anyone know
of an award where they actually judge your site and
tell you how to improve it? That's what I would like,
some good critisism and suggestions for improvement.

Anyway, THANK YOU again to EVERYONE!!!!
All the best,
Arlyn

I downloaded it, but I don't as yet have a video
camera. I've been postponing this purchase until I
worked out the headphone/mic problem. Now that I'm
just using my internal mic I will return to the idea
of getting a video cam. I'll look through the
archives for the one you recommended for Macs,
Elizabeth. In the meantime, I could do the instant
messaging and text chat with the two of you and anyone
else who is willing to join. I'll get on getting that
camera ASAP (I'm little strapped for funds, it being
the holidays and all, and me having so many little
nieces and nephews -- the latest one born on
Halloween!)
All the best,

Folks,

I found an interesting translation tool. You can use it online:
<http://www.foreignword.com/Tools/transnow.htm> to tranlsate words
and text from any language to another. Part of this service could be
via a small software that you can download and use to translate
texts from your own PC and press buttons to translate it
automatically via a web site!

There is another part that you can download natural voice reader:
<http://www.naturalreaders.com/download.htm> to hear the word as
well.

I tested it with English and Arabic and it is wonderful, but of
course you can try it with all other languages that webheads speak :)

Hope you Enjoy it,
Ismail.

When Technology Is Heartwarming

I took last Thursday off from writing this column, and you took last Thursd=
ay off
from reading it. But I have a Thanksgiving thought to share, even though it=
's
about something that happened two weeks ago.

I was in London at a computer conference. I was jet lagged, on the verge of=
  a
cold and — after nearly a week away — missing my wife and two young
children.

Following a talk, I asked some stragglers in the auditorium if there was
anywhere I could get online to check my e-mail.

A young man named Tim Haigh offered to show me to a coffee shop a few
blocks away that had wireless Internet access. Tim and I paid our $8 for th=
e
hour, bought fizzy lemon sodas, popped open our PowerBooks and began to
surf. As we chatted, he mentioned that he often sat in this very coffee sho=
p
and conducted video chats with a buddy in the States, using an Apple iSight=
.

The iSight is a compact, tubular, high-quality video camera, about the size=
  of
a Hostess Ho-Ho. It has a built-in microphone and lens cover. It has no pow=
er
cord of its own; it connects to a Macintosh with a single FireWire cable. A=
s
long as you both have broadband Internet connections, you and another
iSight (or camcorder) owner can conduct a videoconference.

The quality is excellent: smooth motion, full screen if you like and very l=
ittle
delay. It's absolutely nothing like the crude, jerky, stuttering, massively=

delayed video you may have tried with cheap Web cams.

In any case, I perked right up when Tim mentioned his video chats, because =
I
had an iSight, too, perched on my screen back home. I had no idea you could=

use it across the Atlantic.

Indeed you can, Tim said — in fact, he carries his iSight around with him. =

"You mean you have it with you right now?" I exclaimed. "Can I borrow it?" =

It was about 5:30 p.m., meaning that it was 12:30 p.m. at home. On the chan=
ce
that my wife was at her computer, I fired off an e-mail to her, suggesting =
that
we try out an intercontinental video call.

It took a few minutes for me to explain to her, by furious back-and-forth e=
-mail
messages, how to open iChat and start up the video link. (Most of the time =

was spent with me, a color-blind husband, imploring her to click the "orang=
e
camcorder icon," which turns out to be green.)

And then, suddenly, there it was: My wife Jennifer's live image and her voi=
ce,
transmitted in real time 3,500 miles across the globe — instantly, crystal =
clear
and, by the way, free. I paraded around the coffee shop with my laptop and =

the iSight, showing her the local ambiance. (Jennifer, grinning: "Hey, buy =
me
one of those chocolate croissants!")

Maybe I was just overtired and sentimental, but it was an almost
overwhelming experience.

She rounded up the kids. They didn't seem to grasp the full scope of the
technological miracle before them, which I found tremendously reassuring; I=

could see for myself that none of the traveling dad's worst nightmares had =

come true.

We caught up for awhile; I told a silly bedtime story to the kids; we showe=
d
each other how it was dark out in England, but still bright at home. Finall=
y,
after about 20 minutes, we "hung up."

There's a lot of junk in technology, a lot of hassle and frustration, a lot=
  of
disappointment. But this moment was like a TV commercial. It was an
emotional, powerful, simple, perfect example of how technology can change a=

moment, solve a problem, and despite the gulf of time and distance, bring y=
ou
face to face with the people you love.

Dear everyone.

Thank you very very much for attending my presentation as a remote
participant at the Learning Technologies conference today. I really
appreciate the fact that so many were in the text chat, and regret that the
nature of these events means that so few get to speak. It got me thinking
that I may run a presentation next year where the object would be for
everyone present to speak for a minute or two on a particular topic. Any
ideas for such a topic?

What was especially important about today's presentation was the fact that
many of the delegates are from a video conference background and I really
wanted to show them that low bandwidth applications without video can do a
very good job of creating interactive online classrooms, and I think we
succeeded in that goal. A number of people approached me after the event
and were *very* keen to follow up with further investigation.

Many of you have attended several such events over the course of this year
and to you I am especially grateful. It has been an amazing year and though
in many cases I have been the frontman receiving the praise, every one of
these sessions has been a team effort and me standing there alone without
an online contingent would be a lot less impressive.

To Webheads: to those who weren't there today, but who were present on many
occasions throughout this year to ensure the success of these events, a
great big thank you to you all as well. Aiden, Maria, Vance, Susanne,
Teresa, Rita, Dafne, Anne, Jean Michel, Damian, Venny, Yao Dong, BJ, Andy,
Georgina, Elizabeth, Buth and anyone else I can't think of at the moment -
thank you so much.

That's it for this year. The rollercoaster ride has come to an end and it's
time for some holidays, sun, and family time.

Love you al!!

- Michael.

I had this problem once before with this site.
Actually, this may have something to do with an email
I sent to them regarding their pages.

I use Netscape and all of their other pages (other
than the voting page) opens in code only in Netscape.
On a hunch I checked the pages in IE and they work
fine. So, since this is a web site dedicated to great
web mastering, I sent them a letter alerting them to
this difference.

Actually it's an interesting mystery, I skimmed the
code and really don't know why the pages read in one
browser but not the other. (Just a note: I always
check my pages in both browsers and recommend it to
others). Long story short -- they may very well be
updating their site with this new information. Or
their site could just be down as it was two weeks ago.

Either way, let me again thank everyone who voted (or
who tried to vote), I really appreciate the support.
It's especially nice right now at this time in my life
and very special for me. Thank you thank you thank
you!
All the best,
Arlyn

To all:

As some of you may know, this coming week beginning Monday, Dec. 8 and
running through Sunday, Dec. 14 the United Nations, the Swiss Government and
a group of other NGO organizers are hosting the World Summit on the
Information Society in Geneva Switzerland. We will be one of the UN
accredited NGO's providing a variety of technology services to extend this
important global event out to those unable to attend the event in Geneva. I
have two of our colleagues in Switzerland with our equipment now and we have
a number of the sessions scheduled for webcasts plus we will be
re-broadcasting the satellite feed out from City Colleges of Chicago through
our webcast portal to the world. I have also included in our program SRI
International and Tapped In as one of our partners in providing access to
the event, the debates and dialogues surrounding the Summit topics. I'm
pasting into this email the press release we sent out through the UN Press
Corps today with the appropriate links for accessing the schedule of events
we will be webcasting and the login access link. Those Webheads interested
in this event can discuss this with me on Sunday during our regular session.
Mark Schlager would be interested in knowing if any Webheads would want to
provide additional help desk support to BJ during the five day event. Here
is the press release that went out today to the > 500 registered UN Press
Corps:

Digital Workforce Education Society (DWES), an accredited UN Media partner
and a number of our partners are providing the world direct access to the
World Summit on the Information Society, (WSIS) to those organizations and
individuals unable to attend next week's Summit. WSIS is the gathering of
over 98 country leaders, over 250 organizations and over 6,000 registered
delegates to an important global summit on the roles of government, NGO's,
the private sector and individuals, rich and poor, in the digital world we
now live in. The link to all the major international organizer for those
interested in details on this event is here:

http://www.wsisgeneva2003.org/home.html

ATTENTION THE SITE THAT WILL LEAD TO THE LIVE EVENTS (www.digibridge.org
<http://www.digibridge.org> ) IS NOT YET UPDATED, THIS WILL ALL BE DONE
DURING THE WEEKEND DWES ( www.digibridge.org <http://www.digibridge.org> )
will be the principal provider of live, interactive content providing the
world's rich and poor with access to events during this five day event
through a variety of technologies and partnerships. First, our partners in
this unique online event:

First and foremost, City Colleges of Chicago, District Office, with whom we
have worked in providing similar international events for a number of years.
www.ccc.edu <http://www.ccc.edu>

The World Electronic Media Forum, who has accredited us to be one of their
satellite downlink sites into City Colleges District Office's facilities for
our rebroadcasts out to the world down to the desktop/laptop.
http://www.wemfmedia.org/ http://www.wemfmedia.org/ Now remote users unable
to attend this event in Geneva will have access to many of the live programs
and workshops and in some cases will be able to participate live with the
various world leaders as they discuss the future of our Information Society.

To further facilitate access to remote users in countries or areas where
high speed internet service is poor we have also partnered with SRI
International's Center for Technology and Learning http://www.ctl.sri.com/
<http://www.ctl.sri.com/> and their Tapped In Organization
http://ti2.sri.com/tappedin/ http://ti2.sri.com/tappedin/.

Finally the Illinois Century Network, www.illinois.net
<http://www.illinois.net> providing us with the World's largest
telecommunication private education network and technical support to insure
our content can be accessed by this global audience, brief details on this
Illinois Technology Resource can be found here:

Digital Partners http://www.digitalpartners.org/home.html
http://www.digitalpartners.org/home.html

The Benton Foundation http://www.benton.org <http://www.benton.org>

For anyone interested in tuning into this historic event next week or
attending our live webcast from our City College facilities in downtown
Chicago, details will be available through DWES' website at
www.digibridge.org <http://www.digibridge.org> BEGINNING OF NEXT WEEK
(December 8th). A listing of sites where remote users can login to
participate through the variety of technologies we will be supporting will
be listed with links at the www.digibridge.org <http://www.digibridge.org>
website.

Our role in next week's event is simply to provide the technology and
opportunity for as many people as are interested in participating in this
gathering of 98 Nations, over 250 Government, NGO, private sector and over
6,000 individuals and to provide them with an opportunity through Illinois'
rich technology resources to have a voice in shaping the debate albeit, a
virtual voice. DWES takes no position in the debate on the global
Information Society, we only provide all stakeholders the technology to
voice their opinions during the event through our technologies and
partnerships.

We would be interested to support as many as possible other presenters
during the whole summit. Interested partners can contact us by email. We
will as well record all these WebCast activities so that we can
re-broadcast for any interested communities.

Hello Andy,

IThank you for the invitation to attend the UN World Summit Information
Society December 8-14 as an onliner.
I 've been looking forward to this event and I'd like to assist somehow in
Tapped In as well as in Alado. My hours are usually best from around 7:00
GMT to 22 GMT, however my time is limited as I do have other important
commitments. As soon as the homepage is ready, I will take a look and find
out when I could fit in.

I don't know if your daughter is still looking for
kid's links but I found this page of bookmarks that
has an ESL section but also has links to lots of kids
materials that could be adapted to an ESL situation.

Dear Webheads,

I would like some volunteers to participate in the WebCast
activities at Alado, created for my EfS 162 science class, during
which 10 of my students are going to web cast six different
presentations as their final project.

The six presentations are to be held on two consecutive days.
Duration of each group or individual presentation will be 10
minutes, including interaction and discussion with the audience.

Therefore, I would be very appreciative if ,at least, four (4)
Webheads volunteer, two (2) to be present on each day and are
welcome to ask or comment on a presentation.

Two English instructors from the English Language Unit where I work
at the College of Science, Dot and Eman, are to participate as well.

For more details on the project and topics to be presented by my
students, please check out this URL:

http://www.geocities.com/esl_efl_ku/wia_162finalproj.htm

Please note that EfS 162 students presnetations run for two weeks,
from December 27 to January 7, 2004. I have scheduled students
online presentations on December 27 & 28. If these dates are
inconvenient to any of you due to the holidays season, please let me
know so that I can make another plan.

Appreciate your help and cooperation.

Dear Buth,

your live webcast project sounds like a nice post-Xmas occasion for an early
morning chat to learn more about your work with . I'm ready and willing to
do one or both sessions with you as active audience with your colleagues and
science students.

Let me know more when you have further details
