Thank you all,

I really appreciate your immediate help; and now it's time to organize all

Personally, I'm even more shocked to learn of the end of Posterous from its
blog post yesterday
http://blog.posterous.com/thanks-from-posterous

That's going to be a hard act to follow, not to mention the hassle of
porting over existing sites such as http://learning2gether.posterous.com.

Meanwhile to answer John's question, these days we are using etherpad
clones for standalone chat.

The clone can be embedded in a website using code like this:

<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="450" width="950" src="

Here's a list of several from Jan 2011

Welcome to new Webheads participants. I expect we'll get a number of new
members from the latest rendition of BaW which ends today.

For Webheads, I'd like to welcome our newest members:

    - Flaviaruh who 'd like to join this great group of world teachers,
    after attending my 1st BAW
    - Nora Brussolo, also from BaW an ESL Teacher from Argentina.
    - A.Gwandi who teaches EFL at the Foundation Campus at Coventry
    University

To BaW members intending to join us as well, be sure and leave a note that
will identify you as someone with a valid interest in our group.

Here is an example of what I see when I need to approve members.
http://screencast.com/t/J4XrInrqw

The second person listed here clearly identified herself as being a
teacher, and it was easy to see I should approve her in this group.

The first one is not known to me and left a message "thank you for the
invitation". It is common for spammers to leave such messages, that anyone
could write and submit to any group, that any moderator might be fooled
into approving. Once in, the group starts receiving spam, and the
moderator has to remove the member.

So, I won't approve the first request unless someone here can vouch for him
or her. Does anyone know this person and should I approve?

And when requesting to join our group, please leave a message that will
indicate that you know something about the group you are joining.

best, and hope everyone enjoyed EVO

Hello here!

I've taken a look at the screenshot, Vance, and figured out that the name
of Kabanova is known name. Nadezhda Kabanova is from St.Petersburg, Russia,
she is a WorldCALL 2013 awardee. I invited her to join our fantastic
Webheads community. She will definitely send her introduction message as
soon as she is approved, I guess.

Thank you, Vance.

With warmest regards,

Dear colleagues,
Thank you very much for approving me. I am a university teacher from
Saint-Petersburg, Russia. I've been interested in e-learning since 2005, CALL in
particular. Recently I have won a scholarship for participating in WorldCALL4
:-)
Sorry if I sounded like a spammer, but I simply don't like to write long
messages, just to say hello, cause I'm sure all the members are too busy to
read complicated messages from complete strangers ;-)
I really hope to become a true Webhead soon))))
Cheers,

Vance,

That's bad news that Posterous is shutting down. Will you be able to move all
the archived sessions from there to another hosting site? When something like
this happens it not only is a pain to the host, but it breaks all links from
other sites to presentations that had been hosted on that site.

This is one of the weakness of the Internet as a library of information and
ideas. As hosting sites go out of business all of the other libraries that had
pointed to those sites lose their links. Most will probably never find the new
site and reconnect.

A case in point is that last summer Public Private Ventures, a research group
that had produce a large number of reports related to poverty, youth
development, etc. closed its doors. While it moved is archive to another site, I
have not been able to go back through all of the articles I've written that had
pointed to the original site nor do I suspect most others have either.

I'll look forward to an update from you as you figure out your solution.

Dan Bassill

On a separate note, we’ve had some issues with live document collaboration
applications in terms of their not being accessible to blind students using
screen readers. Google docs, Office 365, dropbox, box.net, etc. are all
inaccessible. Wikis are fine, but not live. We’re looking into etherpad’s
accessibility, but if you know of other options out there….

Dan, I suspect there are many thousands -- tens of thousands? - of
(Web-based) networks that provide huge amounts of value to those
within same. My bet is the great bulk of them are possible as a
result of 'labor of love'. We all know how extraordinary Vance is.
We also know that that within the "inner circles" of the Webheads
Tribe are about a dozen - maybe two dozen? - individuals who help to
hold the entire structure together.

How is it possible to put up solid metrics to validate the incredible
value of Webheads? Or those like Tutor Mentor Connection? Or the
value of Tapped In? We can't. Which is also why it is so damnably
hard to find funding.

I guess we just have to accept that with the rich meals served at the
Webheads many, many tables, there come also some sour grapes. For
me, the loss of Tapped In is a very sour gulp.

There are three ways you can get etherpads, or any text doc, to read to
you. One is you can blog it and then get Odiogo to render your blog
audible. You can convert it to PDF and get your PDF reader to read it to
you (in Adobe it's under the view menu). Or you can look into wiki to
speech (google it and see what you can find).

If you get the latter working, get back to us and augment our knowledge.

I am seriously bummed out about Posterous! Thanks for alerting us, Vance. I've
already requested backup for about 6 Posterous sites. The one I've been building
most recently is my ePortfolio for the EVO session "Neuroscience in Education."
I'm not finished with that one, so will wait until I'm done to request a backup.

These free tools have been so great, but when they shut down, it's sad and
inconvenient and generally upsetting. What's a webhead to do? Keep looking for
new sites, I suppose. And back everything up.

Nina

Hi everyone.

It does seem the nature of the free software beast that eventually, in
most cases,

1) it will no longer be free.
2) it will close down.

Backupify (backupify.com) provides back up service (at a small cost) for
all Google apps (Gmail, Blogger, etc), Flickr, Facebook and Twitter, but
not for Posterous :(

It's a real shame that Tapped In and Posterous are closing. TI is part
of webheads history! It's been one of our default home bases for a long
time. And I thought Posterous was the simplest tool out there for
getting content on the web quickly. It seemed to accept just about
anything you threw at it via email, upload, or phone.

It seems that as Facebook goes on expanding and convincing people that
it is THE internet, other niche products fall by the wayside because
they can't compete. Just like small businesses close as supermarket
chains monopolise the market.

And yes, as Nina said, back up and keep a local copy of anything you
value and want to keep

- Michael

Vance, I fear we are operating on different wave-lengths.

The text chat room that I want to lock down on is
one that would "operate" side-by-side with
Webinar and/or phone conference audio voices.
Dead simple to log into, navigate, and as
commonly used thousands of times. I like the
ones where when you type a URL, they are
hype-linkable; I like those that allow you to
type in one language but for those who choose an
alternate language the "read" (and type) in that.

If you or other Webheads can EASILY point me to
such platforms, that would be splendid.

I shall see what Google comes up with. This is NOT urgent.

But all guidance is of course appreciated.

One would think that before the Final Decision to shutter the doors
would be to blast all the users with some rate chart -- and see if
there was enough income to stay afloat.

As good as Posterous was, I would think that it could have made it on
a fee-for-service basis? (So long as the provider doesn't keep
offering new bells and windows, one would think that maintenence
costs would be relatively small.

It would be interesting to know more about Posterous 'on going'
service costs would be? It would also be interesting to learn what
would Tribe Leaders, like Vance, would be able to "collect" from
their Tribe for continuing the service?

Hello Sedat,

I am teaching the a course, under Educational Technology name, for now to senior
applied Linguistics students, who will graduate as teachers of English language.
The syllabub is uploaded in our closed LMS, but  I will email  you the link to
my ss e-portfolios and a copy on the syllabus.

Btw, be prepared to keep yourself constantly updated with all the new tech tools
around. You will find how technology advances in a scary way. The course
objectives are always the same, but the content is changing based on your
digital natives students.

I started teaching this course in 2010, and believe me, my students keep on
impressing  you of how "digitalish" they have become each term. I keep
changing/modifying/adapting/adding to the content all the time. In 2010, for
example, I used to give an introductory class about what is twitter and  how to
use it  in teaching/learning, with additional lab session to practice/do the
required tasks. Now, all of them are tweeting on daily basis (some with more
than 12,000 tweets!!!) They are the ones who are teaching me about the use of
hashtags and how they create lists. I had to skip the introduction class! I also
had to include a section of digital curation (which you won't find in the
syllabus) and I introduced to Scoop.it.

Another point to remember is the secletion of the platform you would like them
to use.For the final project, I ask them to  create a wiki on wikispaces for
English class/course.Now, wikispaces is not free to view anymore. I had to ask
them to invite me to join each wiki to be able to grade their projects.  As a
result, I added a final group presentation to the rubric because we coudn't
share the work by viewing it on their e-portfolio page. Now,  I am using
pbworks for both the class e-portfolios and for the final projects.

Best of luck,
Hala

Thank you for your quick reply. Actually, this is not a course for teaching

English but this is a course for teaching how to use technology in language

classes and my students are pre-service teachers of English. As the

objective of the course is to teach how to use technological tools (blogs,

wikis, podcasts, etc.) in language classes, I have to concentrate on the

tools, not the language. I can categorize the tools according to the

skills, but we always tell students not to teach the skills separately;

they should be integrated. Because of this reason, this might be confusing

for the students.

Thank you Barbara for your interest again,

Dearest Barbra,

I cannot agree more!

After the students take the CALLI course with me, I meet them again in the
second term senior. I teach TEFL course, research methodology and educational
psychology. The students find themselves using Google docs to share with me
their research, sending me voice messages using vicaroo, using wordle  in their
practicum when  teaching vocabulary, or creating an interactive PPT when
adapting a student-centered approach in their classes.

I keep reminding my students that we are only learning the usage of  tools
which will help them, as teachers, to achieve the syllabus goals or a lesson's
objectives. One of the best readings we use is Stephan Bax 'normalisation'. As
part of an assignment, I ask them to reflect, using blogs, on the reading and
point out whether ' Bax normailsiation can  be achieved in the Saudi context,
what are challenges, possibilities, etc.

Best regards from the Saudi Kingdom!:-))

       Hi Sedat,

Welcome back!

It's true that the pace of change in the techno world is staggering and

this is why I think you should not focus on the tools themselves but on the

language skills your students will need to have by the end of the course.

The tools will follow from there, as their function is to help perform

these actions and not an object of study in itself. As Alan Kay would

say:"the music is not in the piano".

If you want tools matched to skills, Edorigami is a good place to start

http://edorigami.wikispaces.com/#Welcome to the 21st Century-Going Solo

They are not language specific but it can help.

Best regards from Brazil,

B.

Vance,

I'm also in shock to hear about Posterous! Thanks for letting us know.

Gosh, what a pity...I've been using Posterous for so long... and doing some
interesting mlearning projects there...

It seems that every time there is a new merge, after a while one of the
services just vanish, just like twitter + Posterous.

Trying to consider what to do now...

I have been a great fan of posterous over the last two years and have come
to reply on it for my work with students' recordings.

I'm left wondering what to do from now on.

As this news hit us right at the end of the mMOOC, I have been posting about
my search for something to use instead of posterous in that group on Edmodo.
I have made my posts public so that they can be read by people not using
Edmodo. This is the link to the public page:

http://britishcouncilamigo.edmodo.com/public/multimooc/group_id/2168865

I have posted about Tumblr, Chirbit and briefly about Spreaker and plan to
do the same with audioboo, Soundcloud and iPadio.

When I decide where to go next, I will still be left with the problem of
what to do with the backups I have ordered from posterous.
The two solutions posterous suggest won't work for me. Squarespace is not
free and I wouldn't want to pay or ask my students to pay and Wordpress
won't be able to host the audio files.
I can foresee any solution being very time consuming as I link posts to
wherever I can find to house the audio files.

I'm am keen to examine all possibilities for a replacement to posterous for
audio files, so if you've got any suggestions, please let me know. I fear we
will be mostly commiserating with each other more than finding solutions to
the back up problem, but, hey, that's something!

Chris

One would think that before the Final Decision to shutter the doors
would be to blast all the users with some rate chart -- and see if
there was enough income to stay afloat.

As good as Posterous was, I would think that it could have made it on
a fee-for-service basis? (So long as the provider doesn't keep
offering new bells and windows, one would think that maintenence
costs would be relatively small.

It would be interesting to know more about Posterous 'on going'
service costs would be? It would also be interesting to learn what
would Tribe Leaders, like Vance, would be able to "collect" from
their Tribe for continuing the service?

Hi Christmas, Carla and Vance,
For about 70 dls a year you buy your freedom if you have your own domain and
host it at Gandi.(less the first year)
https://www.gandi.net/hosting/simple?lang=en
There may be better deals at other providers. (Eg. Bluehost
http://www.bluehost.com/)
As you can see here
http://www.flickr.com/photos/harry/8470437339/in/photostream/
your own domain provides you with a point of privacy and control

You're right, Bee. I've been using and testing those free online spaces for
years because of the educators I train. They are always in the look for the
free tools and don't have or don't want to spend money on that.

However, I've decided that even if I test things, I should keep things in
my own domain, which I already have, so I guess it is time to make the
definitive move...

Thanks!
Carla
