hard disk failure is moving the laptop while it is on. I don't know how much
truth there is in this, but I wanted to share it with you, just in case.

Subject: Which platform for a site with over 700 pages?
mmmarzio

Hi Webheads,

Instead of beginning a long Google search as usual to find an appropriate answer
to my question, I thought I'd begin right here since several webheads probably
already knows the answer.

I have to revamp my site. Generally speaking, my HTML is a huge mess. I never
learned it in a proper way due to lack of smarts, motivation, and the simple
fact that I spend all my time creating its content (video and the interactivity
for the video, which includes hundreds of audio files, and thousands of
pictures).

My site represents the antithesis of W3C validation. Every time I try to improve
the validity of the html, there are repercussions which destroy pages completely
or make the pages even less valid.

My landing page and lesson index page must be completely redone, along with
about 55 "lesson index pages". On the other hand, I do NOT have to change
approx. 650 exercise pages since they are based on Hot Potatoes.

I use my friend's windows server to host the site.

So either I hire somebody to do the work (which will probably be too expensive),
or I find a ready-made solution, such a a Ning. Can 650 exercise pages
(interactive lessons) be integrated into a Ning? Or a different platform? I know
that Nings are not designed for this, but is it possible?
Or do I have to hire a person or company to redo the important Non-HotPot pages
(about 60 pages)?

The mess in question is http://www.real-english.com/

Thanks in advance to anyone who might have the time to reply.

Mike

Thanks everybody. I'm going to explore these options. I just signed up for
Twitter last night as a way to get connected more immediately to ideas and
articles - and to network. I also signed up for Moodle thought I don't know yet
what I would do with it. I'm going to see how I can incorporate a blog and/or
wiki into some of my classes.

Thanks again,
Kevin

that many are into texting. Where/How can I start gently incorporating more
interactive technology into my classrooms without overwhelming myself or them? I
agree with the premise that I need to believe in what I'm doing (I'm speaking
specifically of technology) in order to transmit interest and commitment in my
students.

Mike,

Have you considered having a ning to keep the community there, interacting,
but then using an open space like a wiki to organize your content? You could
have a different neat page for each lesson with the videos, hot pot
activities and any extra materials you want to add. I think a wiki could be
a way to go. As for Ning, it is a place that requires login and all that,
but could be used for the social networking part within the English
learners.

I've used wikispaces and pbworks and am truly happy with both. I do use
pbworks more frenquently, and now we've purchased a paid license for the
school I work for. For 99 dollars a year, you can have backup options and
page security options, as well, plus more space for the files and admin
users.

My cheap R$2,00 here!

Let us know what you decide to do.

Beijos,
Carla

Hello everyone!

I can't seem to figure out how to add a blog post?

But here's a link to my Webheads photo collection from TESOL 2010 (Boston):

and here's a link to my blog on EnglishCafe --
http://www.englishcafe.com/Smiling7/blog -- where I've been posting madly
with various PhotoPeach and VoiceThread posts.

I hope to be adding to my blog soon, too -- with professional-development
oriented posts -- as I go through my conference notes.
[<< http://blogblossoms.edublogs.org/ >> -- note! There's nothing there
yet!]

Enjoy!
It was a fabulous week, and *so wonderful *to finally meet more webheads
(and reunite with others).

Hope to add to the parade next year!
With cyber smiles and well-wishes

Dear Webheads in Action all over the world ...

I wanted to share with you my feelings of gratitude. I won the Roving Reporters'
Writing Competition for IATEFL Harrogate 2010, thanks to the organizational
efforts of the WiA09 team. They were such an inspiration to me and surely to
many other practitioners.

For details, go to
<http://rovingharrogate2010.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html>

I wasn't sure I could make it to the conference this year due to visa issues.
However, beginner's luck was on my side. Here's my story:

I applied for a visa to the UK on March 30 & got it on March 31. That's
unprecedented. I raise my hat to all who made this possible. Admirable
coordination job went on. All that remains is for me to pack. The right way:
identify what's essential and what's not. No need for extra luggage on a
business trip. Or is it a convalescence trip after 6 weeks of feeling under the
weather? I've made it just in time for Harrogate. Yuppi!

For details, go to <http://rovingharrog ate2010.blogspot .com/2010_
03_01_archive. html>

Yuppi!

Dear Webheads:

Once more I need your help.

I am trying to upload a video recorded with JING to Youtube. Although
Youtube uploads it, there is an error and I cannot watch the video.

Is it because JING saves videos in swf format? (It does not in any other
[:(] in my free Jing version )

I tried to change the format via Zamzar but could not. (Not my lucky day
[:((] )

Any suggestion to solve the problem? Is there any other free tool to
record tutorials and upload them in Youtube?

I will be looking forward your suggestions.

Cheers,

Nelba from Argentina

Hi Nelba!
I remember once having the same problem loading a video to my Ning network. I
tried several times but the video didn't work as expected. The sound was working
but not pictures displayed. I tried a software (converter) and it worked for me.
You may free download it here & I hope it'll work for you too: Total Video
Converter
Best regards,
Omar

Hi Nelba,

This is the information on the YouTube site about video file formats.

YouTube accepts a wide range of video file formats. The video files
below are all accepted by YouTube. Some video formats work best and
are most compatible with certain computers, software or devices.

	 • Windows Media Video (.WMV)
	 • .3GP (cell phones)
	 • .AVI (windows)
	 • .MOV (mac)
	 • .MP4 (ipod/psp)
	 • .MPEG
	 • .FLV (adobe flash)
	 • .MKV (h.264)

If you need to convert it to get it successfully uploaded, you might
try this free site: http://media-convert.com/
It will convert from .swf to all of the above formats.

This is information from the JingProject website and it looks like you
need JingPro to upload directly to YouTube:
Jing Pro can send videos directly to YouTube. Be sure that you record
videos in MPEG4-AVC format. YouTube does not support SWF video format.
/help.jingproject.com/share/the-youtube-button-jing-pro-on/

Good luck!

Hi Holly--
Thanks for sharing--and good seeing you in Boston. It was a nice way to spend
the day--inside and not driving.

I went back to Calif driving up I-91 in CT, and thought it would be the
end--trucks throwing huge waves, everyone going too fast, and a car ahead of me
spun out and under an overpass (just missing the concrete) and landed backwards
in a ditch filled with water. The police and bystanders were parked and racing
down to get out any passengers. Most rivers had overflowed their banks and the
trees were under a foot of water--sometimes almost up onto the highway. The
waterfalls were beautiful. Glad I made it to the airport, white-knuckled all the
way.

Let's hope New Orleans is quieter and sunnier.

Cheers--

Hello everyone!

I can't seem to figure out how to add a blog post?

But here's a link to my Webheads photo collection from TESOL 2010 (Boston):

<< http://www.flickr. com/photos/ blogblossoms/ sets/72157623633 953623/ >>

and here's a link to my blog on EnglishCafe --
http://www.englishcafe.com/Smiling7/blog -- where I've been posting madly
with various PhotoPeach and VoiceThread posts.

I hope to be adding to my blog soon, too -- with professional- development
oriented posts -- as I go through my conference notes.
[<< http://blogblossoms .edublogs. org/ >> -- note! There's nothing there
yet!]

Enjoy!
It was a fabulous week, and *so wonderful *to finally meet more webheads
(and reunite with others).

Hope to add to the parade next year!
With cyber smiles and well-wishes

Dear Webheads

if anybody fancies meeting up at Harrogate, maybe it would be a good idea to
join the Harrogate walking tour?
I am assuming I could do with the walk with all this sedentary googling and
writing :).

We couild print a badge WEBHEADS :) and stick it on our 'lapels' or
'bonnets/hats' :) for easier recognition.

Jokes aside, I really mean this could be a good starting point since the
conferences tend to be a bit helter -skelter for the participants
going here and there , 'flying in all directions' , 'losing' friends along
the way....etc you know how it 's like

I tried to post more content (what I saw) in addition to just photos and social
stuff this year--it's hard when you get home so late and are so tired and
everything seems to run together in your mind! Having my laptop made it easier
(but it was HEAVY).

I have enjoyed blogging with all who joined the blog and hope those who were
unable to travel to Boston enjoyed it as well.

Dear Webheads,

I got back home safe and and sound about 18 hours ago after an
unforgettable 16 days in Russia that took me to remote Yakutsk, in
Siberia, the first week to give a 5-day workshop on Web 2.0 tools for
EFL teachers from all over the Sakha (Yakutia) Republic, at the
Yakutsk State University. You can see two photos and a text (in
Russian) about the workshop in the university website. (I translated
it online.)
http://www.ysu.ru/content/news/news_detail.php?ID=6154

I was invited by Yakutsk TESOL and its leading members, Natalya, Elena
and Zarmena in Yakutsk, and Larissa at Purdue Univ., in the USA, with
whom I had previously collaborated through videoconferencing. I felt
at home as soon as I stepped off the plane and met Zarmena. Mind you,
I was nine thousand kilometers away from home in what's considered the
coldest city on Earth. Here's the workshop wiki that includes work the
participants did during my morning sessions, as well as fabulous
collaborations from our dear Evelyn, Larissa and Valentina (in Elista,
Russia), a very active BaW10 member. I bow to you ladies and thank you
for contributing very considerably to the great success of the
workshop. :-))
http://yakutskmar10.pbworks.com/ (this wiki is a work in progress)

The warmth and hospitality of the organizers, participants in the
workshop and everyone else that accompanied me every afternoon on
non-stop events in and out of the city (I was often away from my dorm
room for 11-12 hours) is something that will forever hold a "very
special" place in my heart. I made wonderful friendships and hope to
promote collaborations with Webheads in Asia and the Americas, the
most adequate time zones to work with Yakutsk.

Yakutsk and its people are amazing, genuine, very generous,
warmhearted and very hospitable. They are extremely proud of their
heritage, history, culture, natural products, food... everything. It
touched me deeply. I will be writing about this fabulous and totally
unexpected experience, so I will say no more at this time.

The second week was spent in Moscow and St Petersburg, mainly on
tourism. I had previous connections there, made new friendships and,
hopefully, future professional collaborations with Natalie Udina
(introduced to me by our dear Elizabeth - congrats on your award!) and
Anastasia (???), the Head of the English Dept at the Peoples'
Friendship University of Russia. Everybody was extremely considerate
and careful with my well-being, and I was never left unaccompanied. I
will add a touching detail. I was supposed to meet Natalie at a Metro
station in the center of Moscow at 10:30 on the tragic Monday morning
of the terrorist attacks. She called me at 9:30 asking me to stay at
the hotel, to be on the safe side. She'd keep in touch. She picked me
up at half past three by taxi to take me to her university to meet
Anastasia (who had just been re-elected for a second five-year term as
Head of the English Dept). They gave me a grand tour of the university
that ended with a lovely dinner in a small univ. cafe and a very
productive talk about future collaborations. Then Natalie took me back
to the hotel by taxi. They wanted me to be absolutely safe. I will
never forget this level of consideration for someone they'd just met.

In St Petersburg I was accompanied by Maya (a friend of Lena from
Yakutsk) and Natalia (Ba08 member), two very sweet English colleagues.
SP is a beautiful city and it's very pleasant to walk in the city
center.

This amazing trip has opened up a whole new world!

Please excuse the long message, but I had to tell you a few things,
since I just didn't have the time or energy at the end of my evenings
to get in touch. Just a message home and that was it. BTW, I lost 1.5
kilos!!! You can imagine the intense activity.

For those who celebrate Easter, a very Happy Easter to you and your families!

I'm dying to catch up on Boston TESOL, since I didn't have the chance.
But I'm so exhausted, though in a very healthy way, that it'll take a
few days at least.

Hugs all, Teresa

What an exciting note, Teresa! Thank you for making the time to share a few
details with us. So many stories like this remind me of George Siemens
connectivism ideas and (paraphrased) how we (and those around us, those we
relate to) are being changed in ways we'll probably never realize... one
whirlwind trip of yours has changed so many of us!

Thanks again,
