Yes Nina, you're right on both things. After Rita's comment I found Nick's and I
do also agree that's it's terrible difficult to follow what's on technology
every day.

That's a good question to make: how often do teachers change their ways to
introduce technology for classes? I guess it takes sometime to get familiar and
comfortable to be adding and changing ways.

What do rest do? do you keep changing or sticking to some for sometime?

I'll look forward to your comments.

   Hi Rita and all!

You are right, the WallWisher is fantastic. Nik Peachey offered one at Web
   2.0 Tools for Teachers <http://www.wallwisher.com/wall/teachersweb20> a
couple of days ago. He built it on April 13, 2009 and it numbers 32 posts so
   far.

It's one more great tool to use. Each day dozens of new ones appear here -
it seems hard to explore all of them. [?]

   Hugs,
   Nina

Hello all,
I have mixed feelings. I love Nings because they feel so much more personal
and are friendlier to navigate (for me).But I agree with sentiments
expressed about data collection, about risking losing people with a switch,
about the benefits of keeping an "anchor" in the Yahoo Groups environment.

The webheads have done such a remarkable job of staying in communication
with each other, of visiting each others' many blogs and sites and projects,
of pulling in new friends to the fray as they are ready -- and always,
always, always making folks feel welcomed and valued -- that I would vote to
keep some life to the Yahoo group(s).

That being said, I also fear that Webheads might lose the interest of some
newer members if they don't embrace the ning (or some other format that we
become aware of in the future)...

So, the "compromise" might well be to have a tangential Ning and for those
using it to pledge to periodically post to the Yahoo Group (as many have
been) to keep interest in both alive and well?

But as I write this, I am reminded of how stretched, s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d I
feel trying to keep up with Nings, Twitter, Diigo, Moodles, blogs, Yahoo
groups, listservs, Portaportals, photo tools and so much more -- they're
fun, meaningful, informative and important to me -- but they are eating away
at my time, are keeping me at a computer more hours a day than I am
comfortable with --

so, my feelings are mixed... but my decision will be clear -- wherever
Webheads will be, I will want to stay connected!

I have always felt that it's more the community than it is the tool that's
important. This is to say that the most valuable common denominator we all
share is the community.

One purpose of our community is to allow us to get to know and practice with
a wide range of learning tools.

When I started WiAOC this time around I decided to experiment with Ning. I
called the Ning http://webheadsinaction.ning.com. I thought I could use
this Ning for our community after WiAOC May 22-24.

I don't see this as an either/or. The YGroup is quite useful, easy to
respond to as I'm doing now in a way that Ning or Moodle are not. Still
Ning & etc. have their affordances and it's worthwhile getting to know these
tools.

We also have a Drupal, http://webheadsinaction.org. This is the community
we developed after WiAOC 2007.

Probably best to keep as many feet in as many places as your footing will
allow

Good luck :-)

Vance

I totally agree with you, Gladys. I belong to several communities in Ning,
and I think Ning is great for specific topics, like an event, a course, and
things of the like.

I am never up to date with the communities I belong to in Ning because when
I see the emails, I know that I have to login to Ning to read and reply to
them. On the other hand, and despite the fact that I get tons of emails from
different Yahoo Groups, I skim them, and reply immediately, when I need to,
without having to go elsewhere.

I vote for staying with our list in YG and the Ning to post special events,
show slides, photos, etc.

I also like the fact that I can go to the YG and look for old threads just
by writing a word related to the discussion.

When I was writing my report for the EVO sessions, I found out that the
moderators of those sessions that were delivered using Ning could not count
how many messages were sent each week of the course, because the messages
are spread all over the place on each participants page, on the blogs, on
the forums, etc. YG counts all the messages, and each message has a number
and its own URL.

My 2 cents,

Daf

My experience with Ning communities is limited, but as far as I know a Ning
would not allow me to scan subject lines and track relevant conversations
with just one click from a message I get daily in my email, would it?

I've never tried another discussion tool as flexible as a Yahoo! group. It's
long since I've last used its other features regularly (i.e. files, links,
photos, calendar, databases, polls). For all these I've found other tools
that outdo them, but nothing to me like Yahoo! group options to get
messages!

My 2 cents,
Gladys

Dear Holly,

Since 2002 (Jan 10), that I joined this Webheads YG, we have explored and
embraced, as you say, tons of different tools, some that we still keep using,
and some that started as free and with time have become paid services, such as
Wimba and Blackboard.

For example, I still clearly remember some tools reports that I wrote:

-Skype was launched in 2003that we had a discussion about it, that I reported
here:

http://www.geocities.com/dafne_gonzalez/wia/playing_with_skype.html

Wimba Voice Direct:
http://www.geocities.com/dygonza/webheads/directvoice.html

A tutorial on Blackboard created by Blackboard Team: Dafne Gonzalez, Nigel
Caplan, Susanne Nyrop and Teresa Almeida d'Ea)

http://www.malhatlantica.pt/teresadeca/webheads/bb.htm

This is just to mention "old" tools we have been embracing and discussing,
without leaving Yahoo Groups. YGs is our main communication center. It is a list
that goes to all members without having to navigate elsewhere.

Most of us are twitters, use facebook, del.icio.us, dingo, wikis, blogs,
podcasts, just mention a new tool, and there will be some webheads using it and
the others ready to explore it as we are now doing with Posterous and Wallwish.

In a nutshell, we dont need to move out in order to be adventurous explorers of
web tools :-)

Cheers,

Daf

Dear Webheads:

I totally agree with Dafne and Gladys. I prefer to keep discussions here in our
YG. I like Ning.It seems to me it is a very effective tool for short-time
specific purposes like events or courses; however, people tendnot to bearound,
I mean 'active', for so long. Maybe, because we have to sign in once and again.
One of the advantages I see to YG is that it allows us to bebound,
linkedtogether, perhaps that's the secret. Perhaps, this means has led us to be
who we are, what we have built in 10 years,a great community of practice. It
doesn't mean I am not open to use different spaces, as we do, in fact I love
that dynamism, but I've found YGs are excellent to keep people connected. What I
do when Imiss some discussions is going directly to the YG site and see what's
new. At the bottom of the page, I see all threads related to a specific message.

Hugs,
Evelyn

I'm reading this thread about moving/relocation with interest. I don't think
Webheads will relocate to the 'lofty tower' that we have in Ning, our homebase
is this Yahoogroup. This is where our point of contact is. We try new places all
the time; we move around (and a lot) in this virtual world-- but this YG is what
we call 'home'.

touching base,

Interesting point Nellie and one I'd like to know the consensus on :)

For me the Yahoo group (more or less) IS my contact with the Webheads, so if
it's moving (has moved?) I'd like to know.

I tend to agree with the point that Gavin made in his recent blog posting,
which roughly goes something like: "You need to have a critical mass of
people to make an on-line community work" ( http://slife. dudeney.com/ ?p=178)

I would worry that if we start spreading ourselves over Nings and Pageflakes
and Wikis and Yahoos etc it'll be hard to keep track. I really don't mind
shifting to another place whatsoever, but I want to be able to converse with
as many Webheads in one go as possible and, as far as I know, this yahoo
list is still that place. Isn't it?

So, please do let me know.. is Castle Yahoo groups still our little digital
home, or should we be setting our sites on the lofty towers of Ther Ning
palace for our Webhead onhline meetings?

Best,

Seth.

Hi all,

I'm alone at Elluminate right now, with the 287-page PDF Moderator Help File
open, and I have questions. I want to go back and forth between my site and a
PPT during my presentation, which means I have to load files ahead of time.

On page 284, we read "go to Windows > File Transfer. The File
Transfer dialog box appears." So far so good, But then the part that doesn't
work for me: "Click Load File button. The Load File window appears."

There is no Load file button visible. My file transfer dialogue box does not
look at all like the one in the Help file: there are no buttons at all to browse
my computer's files. It's a bare box.

This is just an example. The Help file doesn't correspond to "my version" of
Elluminate. Maybe it's because I don't have enough "privileges".

I wonder if one of the many competent Webheads who moderate Elluminate sessions
could join me in a practice session. Any volunteers? I hate to ask anyone to
sacrifice time, but I don't think I'm going to figure it all out alone.

If not, I'll use the apparently simpler Dimdim or WiZiQ.

If anyone DOES want to give me a hand in an Elluminate practice session, I'm
available tomorrow May 5 and Wednesday May 6, and then I am finally going on
vacation/filming in the USA, and I get back home to my computer on tuesday May
19th, at around 9 a.m. GMT.

Best wishes to all,

Mike M.

Hi, Mike,

I can understand you perfectly well. Even when in front of a tutorial, most of
the times I learn through trial and error myself, or better still, through and
with somebody who shows me the way in situ.

Tomorrow morning I can be in the Webheads room at 11.30 am GMT, as later Ill be
at work. It'll be great getting together for a trial. Let me know if it suits
you.

Completely agree with Aiden.

Why have we to move somewhere? We are at home, comfortable and cozy.
Exploring around new spaces is a good idea and intention of webheads. Since
2002 I have been learning each day about new web tools and new e-spaces and
joining each endevour offered by webheads and beyond. Sometimes it takes
time to get back, but each time we read new message with familiar or new
links we click on it and get back then.

Warmly,
Nina

Hi Rita,

Yes, great, wonderful. Will meet you at 11:30 GMT.
That looks like 8:30 in the morning for you in Argentina, and 1:30 in the
afternoon for me in France.

Just to be sure, when you say we will meet in the "the Webheads room" I assume
you mean in the "Webheads Virtual Office" - Elluminate Live - the separate
Learning Times/Webheads window which opens up after clicking on "Enter now" at
http://home.learningtimes.net/learningtimes?go=273662
and logging into a live Elluminate session.

I want to be sure not to miss a date!

TIA. You're very kind.

Mike

Dear all,

Tomorrow my students will be recording their parts of the Voicethread for
our online e-twinning collaboration thing. YAAAY!

Any of the students who finish their recordings early will be going and
visiting your blogs to leave a comment or two.

Please can I double check that this:
http://www.pageflakes.com/webheadsblogs/23367565 is the right page for me to
find all the blogs (I can see more of our teacher blogs here than our
students' blogs) If you are a part of this ace project, please make sure
your blog is listed there (or wherever it is that I should be going :D )
or my students won't know where to find y'all :)

Looking forward to meeting you all online.

Seth,

It looks great, but it's tough to see an organization. Maybe the stickies have
to be categorized?
Anyway, it would be a fun site to try with students as social bookmarking.

Nellie and all--
The following is a discussion of Google Groups vs Yahoo Groups that came up in
EVO last year. I think many of the same limitations apply to Ning, esp. having
to set up separate forums for separate topics:

<http://evo-training.pbworks.com/Google+Groups+vs+Yahoo+Groups>

I like the way YG packs all the messages into a Daily Digest in my email, but
that you can also follow a thread by going to the Website itself. I haven't
found any other listserve that flexible.

Maybe someone can do a similar list of comparables for YG and Ning?

Mike,

Seth,

Actually, the tab Carla Arena opened for the projects this year is this:
http://www.pageflakes.com/webheadsblogs/23367565 (Webheads Collaborative
Projects), but not everybody who wanted to join added their blogs, though.
My students will start leaving comments to yours (in your wiki) today, and
I'll get them involved in the voicethreads as well.

Cheers from Brazil!
