You may have seen my Handbook to senseiOnline list that Vance wanted you
to read regarding YahooGroups. Basically you can change senseiOnline to

more than two years.)

I look forward to the learning experience!

Thanks, Dafne!
Dafne wins the Extra Credit for the Voluntary Assignment.
BUT there might be more to this than meets the eye.
Dafne has obviously already associated the email address she uses for
evonline2002_webheads with her
Yahoo profile.
When Dafne visits YahooGroups and asks to see My Groups, the robot there knows
to include
evonline2002_webheads in her list of groups.

Is there anyone out there who can't get it to work so simply?
Fortunately, Keiko has already pointed us to a document where she's written out
the steps to resolving
that one.

I've organized the steps you should take according to the above contributions
from helpful community
members.
I've set where you should be in the syllabus right now to those steps, so if you
visit this url, you
should be able to find them:
http://www.vancestevens.com/papers/evonline2002/syllabus.htm#now

If you're on the mirror site, that would be:
http://lightning.prohosting.com/~vstevens/papers/evonline2002/syllabus.htm#now

You can reach the #now bookmark by clicking on "click here to see what you
should be doing now -->" at
the top of most of the Webheads pages.

Everyone's next Voluntary Assignment is to reach the point that Dafne did. If
you can't get there using
the steps indicated above then do one of two things:
  - write us and explain the problem and we'll try and help you resolve it
  - write out the steps you took to RESOLVE the problem and let us add them to
our set of instructions

Have fun!
Vance

Here's what I learned about changing E-mail parameters in Yahoo groups:
Go to the groups home page: http://groups.yahoo.com
    Click on "My Groups"
Once on the "My Groups" page, click on "Edit my Groups"

There you will find all the groups you belong to, and different options for the
reception of E.mails.

Good Luck

Hi Bridget,

You're not the only country with a block on Geocities. China is in the
same predicament.

For the folks in Tunisia and China, I've mirrored my site here:
http://lightning.prohosting.com/~vstevens/papers/evonline2002/webheads.htm

That one should work (only problem is, tacky ads, but at least you
should be able to access the site).

Regarding the Yahoo ID, assuming you can access the site, check Keiko's
instructions here:
http://lightning.prohosting.com/~vstevens/papers/evonline2002/syllabus.htm

and let me know how you get on.

Cheers,
Vance

Hi Lena and everyone,

I mentioned in an earlier email that one advantage to using Yahoo Groups is that
you can manage many aspects of your subscription yourself. Now it's time for
lesson 1, how to subscribe and unsubscribe to this list.

Lena wants to UNsubscribe agparshin@.... To do that she has gain
access to that email account and FROM that account, send the following blank
email (blank email means no subject or message, and if there is a subject or
message it will be ignored).

evonline2002_webheads-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com

She then gains access to the email account she wants to subscribe, in this case
lenaparshina@..., and FROM that account, sends the following blank
message:

evonline2002_webheads-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Now Lena, in your case, since I know what it is you want to do, and since I'm
frequently on the YahooGroups site these days, next time I'm there, I'll check
for a subscription from lenaparshina, and if I don't see one, I'll send you an
invitation, which you should then reply to. Once lenaparshina is subscribed,
I'll unsubscribe agparshin. But if you can do it through email, go ahead.

Lesson 2 is how you can manage how and where you get your email once you've
subscribed. There is one member of our list who is subscribed at two different
addresses. In this way, he can send messages to the list from either of those
addresses (you can only post to our list from an address you have subscribed; in
other words, once lenaparshina is subscribed and agparshin is unsubscribed,
agparshin will no longer be able to post to the list). But I'll bet this member
doesn't want to receive duplicate emails at both those addresses. He's gone to
the YahooGroups website and set one of those addresses to No Mail. There's also
an option there to set the delivery of email to Daily Digest.

So that's my spiel for this morning, and here's a Voluntary Assignment for Extra
Credit, in case anyone would like to start contributing to our community now.
Go to the Yahoo Groups site and figure out how to change the parameters on your
email (No Mail, Daily Digest, Individual Emails) and then write the list
explaining how.

Nice meeting everyone, and be sure to revisit our sites frequently. If you want
to see who's sent a picture already, visit our community picture gallery at:

http://www.vancestevens.com/papers/evonline2002/webheads.htm

If you find a face that intrigues you, click on it and you'll be taken to that
person's profile on our Community Page.

I hope you're enjoying being a part of the Webheads Community, and that you can
see already by example how communities can be developed on the web. If anyone
has suggestions or other ideas for community development, please let's discuss
them in our list.

Vance

Hi everyone,

I guess we're making progress on getting started. We have 43
participants enrolled in this group (one enrolled twice at two email
addresses, which is fine - with Yahoo Groups, you can manage your
participation however you like). We also have 15 applicants who
requested to be enrolled, and whom I have invited, but who have for
whatever reasons not answered the invitations. Also we are still
getting two or three successful enrollments a day, so we haven't fixed
the community yet.

You can see who is enrolled at this address:
http://www.vancestevens.com/papers/evonline2002/community.htm

You should see your email address on that page. You will also see your
name if I know it, your picture if I have it, and your affiliation or
whatever personal information you happened to have included in your
email to me so far.

At this point, our task in community formation is to develop this page.
So you should at this point send the list an introduction. I hate to be
overly prescriptive, but for the purposes of developing the community
page, could you send me the following information in this format:

(1) Your name, in this format = name you like to be called + last name
(2)Your Yahoo ID (you should get one if you don't already have one)
(3) A web link, if you have one, to your personal web site (you can have

(4) Your affiliation, in this format ...
  - your position in the organization (if you like)
  - The name of the organization (dept., institution, city, country)
  - A web link for that organization if any
(5) A less than 100-word (limit) blurb about yourself

In your blurb you can be folksy if you like. You can refer to yourself
in the first person: I am .. I have been etc.

And, please, if you like (all assignments optional, remember) send (or
point to, on the web) a picture of yourself.
Send the picture to me vstevens@..., not to the list (I will
if I haven't alreadyl blocked attachments on our list - we have a files

first week's topic).

I will make a thumbnail of your picture and put it on the community page
(you can see some there already). If you want to crop or reduce your
own thumbnail it should be 60x70 pixels. But I can make whatever you
send me this size if you don't want to bother.

I look forward to hearing more about you and sharing this information

Thanks Ali.

The reason we need Yahoo ID's is so that everyone can access the
features of the yahoo groups. And the reason we might want to let each
other know about our Yahoo IDs is that with them we can contact each
other on Yahoo Messenger. This happens to be a free chat client that
allows multiple participants in voice chat rooms, and also simultaneous
view/broadcast of web cams. That's for later in the session, but just
so you know.

And in case anyone is concerned about the course being 'over one's
head', you can participate here at your level of expertise and more
importantly, at the degree to which you wish to experiment. We've found
in working with students and like-minded peers that if people in the
community appear to have found a useful tool for online communication,
others in the community will download and install it and the original
users will help the others learn how to use it. Most of the tools are
pretty intuitive anyway, but there is always a lot of support in a
community, and no one is under pressure to do anything, since whoever
wants to can carry on even if all members don't participate.

Now, Ali has already joined us in one of our ongoing weekly online
sessions (each Sunday, noon GMT) at http://www.tappedin.org ... so Ali,
it doesn't look to me like this is going to be over your head at all
:-))

Hi everyone,

I started by responding personally to the introductions as they came in,
but I can't keep that up (and get any real work done, whatever my real
work is ???!! :-))

But I've put almost everyone's pics and blurbs up here (everyone who's
sent one already):
http://www.vancestevens.com/papers/evonline2002/community.htm

So check and see if what's there is what you want (and if not, I'm happy
to change it for you :-)

If you've just joined us, or you want to know what the assignment was,
there is a link you can bookmark here:
http://www.vancestevens.com/papers/evonline2002/syllabus.htm#now

Clicking there will always let you get caught up (if I'M caught up :-))
!!

If you haven't already sent a pic and a blurb, send one in (if you like
- all assignments optional!).
And if you have sent one in, check back at the page now and then, click
on people's urls, and watch as our community fills out.
http://www.vancestevens.com/papers/evonline2002/community.htm

All the best,
Vance

Hi everyone

Just call me Ali , that's easy to remember... I'm an English teacher trainer here in Rabat, the capital of Morocco. I have been mainly trained in applied linguistics and language teaching methodology...My IT/CALL training has been very very patchy and I think I'm still toddling at the CALL threshhold. I like swimming and, until further notice, cybersurfing too! And like you Dave , I have my share in another tremendous job with our two daughters...but it's a lot of fun too.

My yahoo ID? Anyone really cares about it?    ali_boumoussa

Looking forward to the course - I hope it will not be too much above my head!

Vance Stevens <vstevens@...> wrote:

Hi everyone

I'm just winding up my weekend here, Thursday and Friday in Abu Dhabi.
If I'm at home, weekends are a good time for me to catch up on pet
projects, and this has been the case this past Thursday and Friday.

If you visit the website now for this session you can see how I've set
up our web page so that it starts to promote the sense of community we
hope to build here.  Have a look at:
http://www.vancestevens.com/papers/evonline2002/webheads.htm

If you want to see what you should be doing now to keep up with our
group, there's a link at the top of that page you can click on.

Forty-two people had expressed interest in the EVOnline 2002 Webheads
session, and after I sent the email explaining how you can enroll
yourself, exactly half that number responded with an email to
YahooGroups and were duly enrolled.  We're now waiting for the other
half to catch up.  I'll send them invitations (through YahooGroups) to
join us if I haven't heard from them in a few days.

While we're waiting, there are a couple of things you can be doing to
enhance your experience with this session.  First off, have a look at
our community page.
http://www.vancestevens.com/papers/evonline2002/community.htm

You'll notice that it lists names and affiliations of all participants
where known, and gives web page links and Yahoo IDs where available.  In
addition, some webheads have sent a photo of themselves (and one
participant in the WFW groups made a drawing of herself, which is
fine).  If you want to send me email with any information that's missing
from my chart, I'll fill it in when I hear from you.  If you want to
send a picture (all 'assignments' optional, remember?) the end result
should be a 60x70 pixel thumbnail. If you want to send one of exactly
that dimension that would save me some time and give you control over
what you look like on our web page, but if you send any pic I'll make it
come out the right dimensions.  Send attached pics to me at
vstevens@..., not the list if you can help it (and if you do
send it to the list by mistake it's ok, we've all done that at one time
or another).

Another thing you can be thinking about is sending an introduction to
the list, but you might want to hold off on sending that right now until
the other half join us.  If you do send it though, it will be in our
archive or group email where newcomers can find it, at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/evonline2002_webheads

One other thing you can be doing: if you don't already have one, get a
Yahoo ID.  This will be useful because without it you can't access all
the group features at the url above (the options in the left-hand
sidebar) and you won't be able to participate in voice and video chat
using Yahoo Messenger.  Once you get a Yahoo ID you can download Yahoo
Messenger as well and be playing wth it.

Finally, visit http://www.tappedin.org and register as a member if you
like what you see there.  You can participate in our community
activities as a Guest when we meet at Tapped In, but as a member you'll
have a richer experience.

We have weeks in our syllabus devoted to the above suggestions, so don't
feel you have to do all the above now, just do what you think you can
tackle at this point and over the next couple of weeks before the
session starts officially on January 25.

Meanwhile, welcome to the group, and feel free to write to the list with
any questions, concerns, suggestions, and introductions when you feel
it's time for that (if in doubt, follow my lead).

(3) A web link, if you have one, to your personal web site (you can have
two or three such links if you like)
(4) Your affiliation, in this format ...

Send the picture to me vstevens@..., not to the list (I will
if I haven't alreadyl blocked attachments on our list - we have a files
area in YahooGroups if you want us all to have something, but that's the
first week's topic).

I will make a thumbnail of your picture and put it on the community page
(you can see some there already). If you want to crop or reduce your
own thumbnail it should be 60x70 pixels. But I can make whatever you
send me this size if you don't want to bother.

I look forward to hearing more about you and sharing this information
with all present and future participants via our community web page.

I ended up in Australia in January 2000 via Japan & the U.K. and am
planning on staying here indefinitely. I'm extremely interested in
'unplugging' CALL (i.e. escaping from these huge materials driven CALL
packages and looking at what really makes courses tick, i.e. people!), and
Yahoo! groups usage in teacher development and with students as a big part
of that. I'm looking forward to this!

send a picture (all 'assignments' optional, remember?) the end result
should be a 60x70 pixel thumbnail.

Vance

Hello James,

and I'm also going to take this opportunity to welcome Joan Miller who joined
us a day or two ago ... and I'm copying this to our existing Webheads group, so
if new members appear, we'll all know how and why. Many of our Webheads
members are familiar with TESOL, having participated in live online sessions at
several TESOL Conferences. TESOL is at http://www.tesol.org in case you need
to know that.

Webheads is a live community of native and non-native speakers and learners of
English who are interested in getting to know each other and in the process
learn a bit about the free synchronous communication software tools that makes
this possible. We've been doing 'our thing' for over three years now.
Meanwhile this TESOL EV Online event came up and I offered to facilitate a
session on how we got our community together online and sustained it.

The course syllabus is at
http://www.vancestevens.com/papers/evonline2002/webheads.htm. As you can see,
we are slated to 'start' January 25.

However, your options for participation are broader than that. You can join
the yahoogroup we've set up for this purpose at
evonline2002_webheads-subscribe@yahoogroups.com (Joan has already done that;
not sure about James Farmer). To join you just send email to that address.
Then you would follow the syllabus as directed.

Alternatively, you can also participate in the real thing. To do this, you
send blank email to efiwebheads-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. In this case we
treat you as a member of our community. You would be invited to send a picture
and and introduction of yourself (all optional; everything is optional in this
group). If received, we would add your picture to our gallery at
http://sites.hsprofessional.com/vstevens/files/efi/webheads.htm. If we receive
an introduction, we start a Webheads web page for you and link it from
http://sites.hsprofessional.com/vstevens/files/efi/students.htm. This would
put you on our listserv as well, though you are able to control what emails you
receive and where they are sent.

You can also participate by just dropping in on our live synchronous chat
sessions held each Sunday noon GMT. We speak in GMT at Webheads. This is
rather early in the morning for people in the USA, though we tend to remain
online till 2 or 3 in the afternoon GMT. In these sessions we meet at
http://www.tappedin.org and we often branch into voice and video web cam chat
using Yahoo Messenger. You can join us if you like (with or without being a
member of our group). There is a url explaining how:
http://sites.hsprofessional.com/vstevens/files/efi/software.htm

Until January 25 in the TESOL EV Online group will be forming. If you would
like to join us at Webheads meantime, we are a very welcoming community, and
you would meet members of the Tapped In community as well. Feel free to
participate as you like.

All the best,

Vance
