Sure, Rita, understand your situation :) Will be there at Webheads
vOffice in LT to listen to you, next month; is there any other virtual
venues that you plan to integrate? Just let us know in advance.

Cheers,
Buth

Hi, Abdel (if that's your name),

Thank you for your interest in my presentation. You'll need to
prepare your pc to enter the Webheads Office at
http://home.learningtimes.net/learningtimes?go=273662 , the
environment I'll use for my presentation, so you should check that in
advance, as well as your loudspeakers, to be able to listen to us.
You'll also see once there that there is a window that allows you to
text chat with the other members of the virtual audience.

I hope you can make it, welcome to the group.

Rita

Thanks so much for referring us to Tony Bazun's inspiring video. I've known
his books for years, this is the first time I've seen and heard him. (What a
revolution that is - the ability to watch short, educational TVs on one's
monitor).

OK, I noticed some of his linguistic tricks as a propogandist, and I found
him a little too fond of quoting Newsweek (or was it Time?), but it is hard
to disagree with his main theses - children's creativity dwindles the longer
they are in education, creativity is central, not an optional extra, and
chidren need to taught how to learn, or, at least, have their innate wish to
learn encouraged, nourished and supported.

But apply this message to EFL/ESOL/EAL - most people in our profession are
the servants of textbooks, class tests, final tests and would never ever be
able to agree on the best way(s) to learn a foreign language. How could we
as a profession react to Tony Barzun's call?

Hi everybody,

In the same way as Buth was writing some posts before mine, just to say once
again that I'm still here and lurking since I have other lists and RSS to read
every day... and also asking to a favor:

would you be so kind to pass this survey to be completed only by distance
universities teachers?

I would also like to share with you a tool that I've just seen in one of the
blogs that I like to read: http://www.chinswing.com/ , which combines forums and
voice.

See you!

A warm hug to all my dear webheads! Hope everybody is doing great!

Well, this is the story...
I registered to www.talkr.com <http://www.talkr.com> , that's a nice
tool that allows your readers to listen to what it's written in your
blog... I'm sure most of you my dear friends know what I'm writing
about...

I think this is a great tool for my level one, and two, three... four...
five... ok all of my sudents. I teach at university level, some of my
students pass their English courses with low grades, (all they need is a
10 out 20 to pass) It's hard to convince them about the advantages of
learning a new language. Most of them just want to be lawyers, or
accountants.... The result is that I get mixed level classes... some of
them are in the right level and some of them really need that extra
help. Anyway, the idea is to offer the best resources for everybody. I
know the audio provided by talkr sounds really funny... like a robot
...but that's better than nothing.

I've been trying to add the code provided by talkr.com to our class
blog (blogger) for two days now... I haven't been able to do it. I read
the instructions but I keep on failing.....I'm tired... Please... help!

Now, that we are at this, it'd be really nice if you my dear webheads
could check our blogs and leave comments to motivate my students to
continue blogging. This is our class blog
www.doris3meflcenter.blogspot.com
<http://www.doris3meflcenter.blogspot.com> , there you'll find the
links to my students blog. We are planning to continue blogging and
conecting with other people or classes out there in the world... if you
want to join us .. just let me know...

Thanks for everything .... and keep on shining!

Ahh, late at night, working down to the wire, I'm leaving for Egypt right
after work tomorrow, I was at the website sending out a reminder, turned
away, came back to see that a your msg was posted notice was up ??? .. I
hadn't finished it ... but meanwhile it hasn't turned up. Apologies if this
is a resend.

Just to remind you that on Saturday I'll be webcasting live from Alexandria,
or trying to, from 6 a.m. GMT for a couple of hours. You are most welcome
to drop in any time before 8:30 GMT and stay as long as you like. It will
be my graduation webcast (from the Webcast academy) so if it works you can
skype in and congratulate me. Jose Rodriguez will be helping out, for which,
much appreciation. http://www.webcastacademy.net/listen

May I suggest that if any of you helping Rita later are up at that time, you
could drop in and practice whatever you plan to do. It's an unEvent, so
control will fall to whoever is there. In Alexandria I'll be trying to show
the tools. If conversation flags we can talk about EuroCALL coming up, or
whatever interest you.

Here are the details:

F.U.N. Fare - UnWorkshop on Computer Mediated Communications Tools for
Distributed Social Learning Networks:

The two convergent communities of practice Webheads in Action and
Worldbridges are constantly exploring new computer-mediated communications
(CMC) tools for percolating knowledge through their overlapping distributed
learning networks, many of which take on many properties of social
networking. Members of those communities will be invited to join us online,
and the (un)workshop will take place informally, without fixed agenda, in
response to the direction suggested by the online participants and those
present in Alexandria. Among the spaces we can explore (more to be added as
they occur to me) are:

a.. The Webheads in Action and Worldbridges Drupal portals
Find us in the chat room here: http://webcastacademy.net/chat (because
we'll be streaming)
b.. Skype, with a demonstration of webcasting through Worldbridges Webcast
Academy
Find Vance on Skype ID vancestev; stream at

Dear all,

I'd like to have an idea of the common practices in relation to the payment
of teachers giving online classes. For the ones with online groups, could
you give me an idea how it works? Is it based on the number of students, x
hours a week or what?

Hope some of you can help me.

Thanks a lot!

Hi Doris--
I use Talkr with my Blogspot blog
<http://ehansonsmith.blogspot.com/>
and it seemed to take several tries to get it to work initially. It
also takes about 24 hrs or more for a new post to have the Talkr
function show up, so don't be discouraged if the oral reading doesn't
seem to be functioning immediately.
Cheers--

Through a link on one of Vance's pages I tracked down what look like a
good step-by-step guide to getting started in SL, though oriented to a
particular campus:

<http://sl.nmc.org/wiki/Getting_Started>

The references at the end are also worth a look, as they focus on
educational aspects of the MUVE.

Hi, Carla,

I loved all your great photos and the description of the fun you all
had meeting up. I, too, met Susan and her kids this summer in Italy,
and we had a great day together.

Hi Everyone,

It's fun reading everyone's comments on another Webheads get-together. Buth and
I are attending the same small conference in Alexandria, and it seems to be
going well with a very robust wireless setup.  Buth and I have been taking
pictures of each other's presentations and Buth has been putting them up at
Flickr.  We've been teaching people to use tags, so you can find the photos
here: http://www.technorati.com/photos/tag/iucnalex

Now, about  tomorrow, Sat Sept 1, 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. GMT, I've got in mind
a kind of free-for-all unWorkshop.  It should be fun.  I've got two
laptops.  One of them does Second Life well.  The other computer is
set up to webcast (at http://www.webcastacademy.net/listen ).  I'll try to
get those going from 6:00 a.m. GMT  I'll send a twitter and we're
off.  I'll put a computer somewhere into Elluminate and TappedIn (and I'll
try to monitor the webcastacademy chat room, or delegate the task.  I'll be
skyping via the webcast.  Meanwhile people will be dropping by and asking
questions which I hope an online audience can help me answer.  It should be
fun, but it's not linear programming, so anyone popping in at any time during
the 2.5 hours will be appreciated.

The nice thing is that the Alexandria library looks like it should be able to
handle the load, and the Internet is working unhindered as far as I can tell.

On the down side I have no Internet at my hotel (well I CAN have it for $10 an
hour, but I think I'll opt for a break).  I'll come online as early in the
a.m. as possible prior to the event.

Hope to see you guys online, if you're awake, and free

Vance

Hi folks--
I managed to get into Science School (128/128/0) at Second Life for
today's broadcast of Science Friday with Ira Flatow, This is on
National Public Radio's Talk of the Nation show on Fridays. Here is
the link to the show:

<http://www.sciencefriday.com/pages/2007/Aug/hour2_083107.html>

I was hoping to get a T-shirt for my avatar while attending, but SL
froze up (42 people at Science School was overwhelming). They streamed
the radio show through SL so you could listen while interacting, and
the public radio version mentioned questions asked in SL. Interesting
discussion with the Linden founders, and they again emphasized the
educational aspects of SL and its use by educational institutions.

BTW, <http://www.Sciencefriday.com> has some amazing science videos,
so it is a great place for content-based and project-based curriculum.

Cheers--
