The editors of the American Heritage® dictionaries have compiled a list of
100 words they recommend every high school graduate should know.

"The words we suggest," says senior editor Steven Kleinedler, "are not meant
to be exhaustive but are a benchmark against which graduates and their
parents can measure themselves. If you are able to use these words
correctly, you are likely to have a superior command of the language."

Andreas,

I love the list of words... Whilst I recognise all of them, I can’t quite
remember the last time I had occasion to use words such as ‘jejune’,
‘gerrymander’, ‘gamete’ or ‘deciduous’ (amongst about another 50 of the
words they think are useful). When I saw the list I checked the date, but no
– it does appear to be July 8th and not April 1st.

Fantastic!

Now I really must get back to a sanguine and unctuous examination of my
ziggurat...

How lovely it was to listen to your podcast, Teresa, and to see the album of
the Lisbon Summit! How I wish I had been there too--it put me in mind of
those wonderful evenings in Seattle (which was rainier and colder). Thanks
so much for sharing the joy.

Hi,

Do you know this one?

With the free version you can inter alia record Skype calls without a time
limit and export it as an mp.3. Which you can edit with e.g Audacity and
use it for a podcat or learning material in class.

Other options: Do telephone training and record your students without
expensive gimmicks like phone recorders …

Record interview native speakers with different accents …

---

With the paid version 25 US$ you can even record conference calls or record
on different channels …

Both versions include an answering machine for your Skype account and other
stuff …

It’s worth a try …

Best wishes

Hi all

Vance pointed out I had sent two gibberish messages to the list this morning. No
idea what happened - if I had a cat I could have claimed it jumped on the
keyboard or something. (Maybe I should check for other mammals in the study but
I haven't heard feet a pattering during the night)

I've removed the messages from the group thread

This special issue focuses on trends, pressures, and evolutions shaping
  the
future of education in all its forms, with particular consideration of
  the
role of information technologies in creating that future.

The future of education—whether in public or private schools,
colleges or universities, corporate training rooms, or other
yet-to-be-imagined venues—is a vision dimly seen on an uncertain
horizon. Tectonic technological, social, economic, and political
  shifts,
driven by the accelerating pace of information technology,
  globalization,
and an evolving culture of knowledge, render already unstable futures
largely unknowable. Educational systems face even more immediate
  pressures
arising from the increasing role of for-profit education providers,
  learner
access to open content, and the growth of the "participation culture."
Change, even radical change, is unavoidable; tomorrow’s education
  and
training systems are not likely to resemble today’s educational
complex.

Whatever the future holds for education, information technologies will
  play
a role. The creative use of information technology can enhance
  education
processes, enabling educators to meet new challenges and reshape
education's role in society. The technologies of education, and the use
of technology in education, are both drivers of change and indicators
  of
future directions.

Submissions for this special issue may address, but are not limited to,
these key issues:

1. What does the "rise of the amateur" in media, music, and news
  industries
suggest for education providers of the future?

2. What is the role of universities and colleges when the world's
information is at the fingertips of learners, without the mediation of
experts? Or when experts make those resources freely available through
MIT's OpenCourseWare or Open University’s OpenLearn?

3. Is a copyright system designed to protect physical
  objects—books,
magazines, and journals—capable of serving the digital knowledge
needs of the next generation?

4. How can technological tools be used by developed countries to assist
emerging countries in educating their people?

5. How should governance and leadership be structured in educational
institutions facing exponential change?

6. Are existing research agendas and methodologies capable of answering
  the
knowledge needs of the next generation?

7. Do our existing theories of learning reflect how digital natives
  learn
in the information age?

If you would like to submit a manuscript on this topic, please send it
  to
the guest editor of this issue, George Siemans
  (gsiemens@...)
and to me (jlm@...) no later than October 15, 2007.

Thanks!

Jim

Thanks, Yaodong--
I will hang onto those examples to use later.

But my question is really more theoretical--what have we learned about
SLA (or second language learning, as I prefer to think of it), and has
technology changed what we know about it?

Cheers--

Dear all,

(sorry for cross posting)

This message is about seeking volunteer teachers and facilitators for
languagelab.com. Read on if interested.

Some of you may be aware of Languagelab.com (www.languagelab.com) as a
nascent language learning company in Second Life.

Some of you may have registered on the site already - apologies for
the delay in getting back to you.

My name is Paul Sweeney and I have worked in English Language Teaching
(ELT) for 20 years, the last 10 of which in the area of learning
technologies. A large part of my career was spent with British Council
and I was fortunate enough to be able to work on a variety of Learning
technology related projects: teacher training; setting up blended
courses; designing and delivering virtual English courses; designing
and supporting communities for teachers and
learners; designing and implementing projects around what
supplementary services learners want *around* rather than *instead of*
their
classroom learning; devising on where technology is really going to
solve an educational problem as opposed to being a nice potential
solution if only it
could find a problem to justify its existance ;-)

Another way of saying the above is I have had the opportunity to make
more mistakes than most but have hopefully learnt not to
(knowingly) repeat them.

Last month I started working for Languagelab as Director Education.

A teaching / learning philosophy of Languagelab.com might run
something like this:

We think that language learning and teaching in SL is perfectly
possible (of course). Where we aim to formally teach, our initial
approach involves identifying elements of good communicative practice
in the ELT / ESOL classroom and transferring them into voice enabled
SL. This probably won't happen in recreated virtual classrooms though
- good as some of the experiences can be in classrooms, most ELT /ESOL
teachers spend a fair amount of time trying to transcend the walls and
relate to real life so we don't see much point recreating them.
Learning languages in SL should revolve around the principle that SL
is a social space and Languagelab will facilitate that through helping
people relate to one another in their target language, informally,
through structured events as well as in 'classes'.

In the medium term we would like to work with people to build
educational SL tools and resources which support the learning of a
variety of languages. We will also be putting out a call for people
with an aptitude for developing course materials.

In the short term (over the next 3 months) we are interested in
working with people to

- trial courses we have written
- host events (speed greeting, karaoke, quiz shows, the 'Desperate
Housewives hour', the Murder Mystery)
- facilite communication in the restaurants, bars and leisure areas of
languagelab.

Until September Languagelab will be free to learners as we try out our
courses and social events with them.

We are looking for a core number of teachers- I assume most on this
list share a communicative language teaching background - who would
like to collaborate for a few hours per week. We won't be making any
money of this but will be putting other resources at your disposal and
think will be a serious learning experience for all involved.

If you wish to bring your own students then all the better - you can
explore the facilities with them and we will boost the numbers of
student community.

Please get back to me personally if you would like further information.

Best

Paul

Hi all,

When using Powergramo, do not forget to tell your students to export files
as mp3 files before they sign out their Skype accounts. Otherwise, the
sessions are recorded as files with".pga" extension and I haven't found a
software for converting these files into mp3 or any other audio files.

Best wishes,

Sedat Akayoglu

Hi Folks,

We're having fun here in San Sebastian. We visited a gastronomic
society for lunch this afternoon and had cod and I was reminded of
Teresa, so far away in Parede.

Today was day 1 of the 3-lecture series I'm presenting. I'm using
Elluminate to record the sessions, and today Venny dropped by. At
about the time I got him to say something my computer became gummy and
eventually crashed, right in the middle of the session. I still
managed to record to that point.

I won't put the links to the recordings and slides (at slideshare.net)
in this email but if you want to see what we're up to here, visit the
portal at one of these links:

     *  http://www.vancestevens.com/writing.htm
     * http://www.geocities.com/vance_stevens/writing.htm
     * http://www.prof2000.pt/users/vstevens/writing.htm

I'll use two computers tomorrow and try and get another recording for
the second lecture at or after 10:15 GMT. If you're around drop in
and if things are going well I might get you to say hello.

I hope that day three, Friday same time, will be more interactive,
with Writingmatrix participants coming by to explain how they have
used the concepts taught here.

You are most welcome to join us or simply listen to the recordings and
explore the materials and slides at your leisure.

Best,
Vance

Hi everyone,

I received the message below from one of our webhead friends, so I'm sending
this clarification

The links for the lectures I am giving currently are available at:

     http://www.vancestevens.com/writing.htm
     http://www.geocities.com/vance_stevens/writing.htm
     http://www.prof2000.pt/users/vstevens/writing.htm

Here you will find the texts of the lectures and the links to the slides at
slideshare.net

WHere I am able to make recordings you will also find them linked there.

If you wish to join us online you can listen to me live and make comments in
text chat. Bobbi will be handling the text chat today and she will let me know
if there are any questions or comments from the chat. Otherwise today I plan a
lecture.  Tomorrow I am hoping to be more open with the LT discussion.

I am using Elluminate from LearningTimes which has a system now for archiving
presentations automatically.

To join us at LT, please visit http://tinyurl.com/y3eh
This will redirect you to http://home.learningtimes.net/learningtimes?go=273662

There you will find the familiar presentation environment.

I am being a bit ambitious and cannot promise that all will work perfectly, but
one pushes the edges in order to learn.

Best,

Vance

Cristina,
I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for by learning patterns, but here is
a link to a compelling article in The New York Times I read a few months
ago--it's long, but well worth reading for educators and parents. The title is
"How Not to Talk to Your Kids: The Inverse Power of Praise":
http://nymag.com/news/features/27840/

After reading the article, I found the book "Mindset" by Carol Dweck at my
library. Although I didn't think the book was brilliantly written, it does
include very interesting studies, reflections, anecdotes and strategies to
improve learning at all ages and well worth skimming through.

Hi Andreas
We've been using Powergramo to record the Skype
interviews we carried out at Splendid Speaking.
I'm a big fan! It sits inside Skype and just does what
is says on the label - records your conversations or
conferences. I've never had any problems using it,
although it you leave it switched on permanently, it
will load when you first start Windows and might delay
things a little while it syncs with Skype. If you turn
it off until you need to use it you'll avoid this.
Have a listen to the Splendid Speaking interviews here
to check out the quality of the recordings - which
will vary depending upon the Skype connection of
course:

Best wishes

Me too, wish I could have been there. Here in San Sebastian they have
Basque gastronomic societies where people socialize over the
preparation of good food. We were taken to one all three days of the
the lectures.

Thanks so much those who attended the live lectures. It was great to
have people on hand to give that vital dimension of connectiveness on
topics where the idea is to show people how these new tools put us in
touch with one another.

The lecture texts, slides, and recordings are available at:

     * http://www.geocities.com/vance_stevens/writing.htm
     * http://www.prof2000.pt/users/vstevens/writing.htm

Bobbi and I are heading into the mountains from tomorrow and it is
unclear whether we'll be near internet at 12:00 noon GMT on Sundays.
If not I may have to miss the usual chats for the next couple of
weeks. I'll resume participation toward the end of this month.

Best to all,
Vance

Hi, Webheads,

I've been traveling for the past 2 weeks since I met up with Susan in
Florence. Now I'm visiting relatives and have daily access to email
again.

Susan was a wonderful hostess and indeed it was like meeting up with
an old friend. Our classes did an email exchange about 3 years ago
when I still taught in Arizona. She showed me some of the lovely
countryside around Florence, and I enjoyed meeting her family while
she prepared a yummy Italian lunch. It was really a treat to meet her
and spend a day with her.

Hi Folks,

Just a quick message to say that we've moved all our teaching facilities and
spaces (and expanded them a little) in Second Life from EduNation to a new
island called EduNation II, which is next door to the original one. As
always, we invite any Webheads who would like to use the teaching spaces and
tools to take a look around and then get in touch with us - we'll be more
than happy to help. You can find the new island at:

Hope to see you there sometime soon!

Dear webheads,
At this moment,I'm doing my doctorate at the University of Seville,
Spain by means of an agreement with the University of Carabobo,
Valencia, Venezuela.
The theme of an investigation I'm doing is related to the compentences
teachers of Spanish should have to learn English by means of ICT. Up
to now, it's been difficult for me to find information in the Internet
regarding this aspect. Could anybody send me links where I could read
about previous investigations in this area?
Thanks a lot from sunny and hot Valencia,Venezuela,
María Irene

For those of you who are occasional listeners of the Absolutely
Intercultural podcast at www.absolutely-intercultural.com this is just
to let you know that the current show produced by my German colleagues
is mainly about podcasting and Second Life in education. The Second
Life interview features Webhead Nicky Hockley talking about Edunation.

And the next show, due out on July 27 will feature Michael Coghlan, in
his role as an Australian rather than an educator (and his daughter) as
well as Carla Arena in a child themed episode.
Stay tuned!

For anyone who has seen Photobooth which comes with MAC I-sight and
wants to do the same thing on PC, there is a new site here which allows
you to upload photos from your webcam and do photbooth type effects on
them.

http://www.sigost.com/

Loads of fun (not sure how much of it is linguistically educational
though). Could get into some interesting vocabulary describing how the
images have been changed!!!!

Have fun

Dear Webheads,

I just returned from Brazil, where I had the good fortune to meet up
with several Webheads in São Paulo and Brasilia. It's a wonderful
country and Brazilians are wonderful people, but getting to meet
Webheads along the way added a special dimension to my trip. It's such
an advantage to get to know people with whom I already share so many
interests.

A warm thanks to Barbara Dieu and Erika Crunivel for their hospitality
and especially for assisting during the workshops -- I don't know how
I could have done without them! Also thanks to Ronaldo Lima, Jr,
Claudio Fleury, and José Antonio Da Silva for their company and
friendship.

and more photos here:

Best, Claire
