Thanks a lot for explaining, Fire, yesterday I could not quite figure out
how this game works in SL. This tool will certainly be useful to enhance
group dynamics occasionally. Great idea about pooling our resources, I will
keep my virtual eyes open for other HUD tools and will share as soon as I
find something.

Cheers,

Kati

Thanks Yaodong!

I saw you on Second Life! That was a really good session - I went to bed at
330am, and got up at 6:00am for 1.5 hours to attend the session, then i went
back to bed!

It was really intersting to meet everyone -
At the meeting, I distributed a free Rock Papers Scissors game I had found
from the HUDDLES store (search for it on SL)

The Rock Paper Scissors is a HUD (Heads up display) attachment that will
give you a set of controls on your screen - one for "Challenge" then a
"rock" "paper" and "scissors".

All you have to do is wear the HUD, and click Challenge. If someone esle in
the vincinity is wearing the R.P.S (rock paper scissors) HUD, then you'll
get a message which asks you to who you want to challenge - once you select
a person, and that person accepts your challenge, you'll get another message
that asks you to select a rock paper or scissor.

then after 20 seconds, you both will do the R.P.S animation, and then one of
you will do a victory dance, or get knocked to the floor. It's pretty
neat.
-- I think this HUD attachment is pretty pretty cool - because as an
educator, I always use rock paper scissors to resolve conflicts and make
decisions amoung students.

Anyhow, I think it would be great if we, as educators, could compile a list
of teaching tools for SL - and report on how we used them... say... on this
forum?

Well- I hope you all find it useful -
cheers!

nice to meet everyone!

Greetings SLers.

(1) Have you all noticed that there is an option when SL is booting to
select the place where you always wish to start - in my case: EduNation?
(2) After yesterday's SL problems I have lost my nice, blue pullover and my
beard. If I right click in Appearance, I get the avatar I created, but the
look-alike that is running around at the moment has a white T-shirt and no
beard. How can I get my appearance back to what it is supossed to be?

Hi there everyone,

I did a Digg.com search for Secondlife, and i found an interesting
link - someone figured out how to use an http link to launch skype and
automatically call you.

So.. I made a neat little skype button and added a script to it...

Now people can click on it and call me!
Here is a picture:
http://www.slprofiles.com/pictures/17259.jpg?3285

the script however works off of the guy's domain that made the
discovery... so - i dont know how long it will work. I have sent im
a comment on his blog: http://www.makeyougohmm.com/20061130/4001/ to
send me the php he used to accomplish this.. so ill give you
updates... in the mean time, we have a script that will make it easy
to call each other.

Btw, if you dont want to have a bunch of strangers in second life
having access to your personal skype address that has family etc on it
- you can do what i did - run two skype clients on your computer at
once. now I have a skype addrss for my family and personal friends,
and another for my second life friends (my skpye for second life by
the way is eslteacherlink.com - the same as my domain name)

Anyhow - to get two skype's running on your machine, you can follow
these directions: http://forum.skype.com/lofiversion/index.php/t2945.html

or read below:

(taken from the above url)
Important: I have tried this only on Windows XP Professional. If you
get it to work in any other Windows system, please post it here.

This is a 2 step process.
First step:
Goto Start --> Control Panel --> User Accounts
Create a new user account with administrator privileges. Also make
sure the password field for this new account is NOT BLANK.

Second step:
Right click on the desktop icon of Skype. You will see “Run as…â€
highlight it and select it using the left click. Now select the user
account by clicking on the lower radio button you have just created,
enter the password in the password field.

A new copy of Skype will run.

Note: You can log in twice in the same account using Skype but I’d
recommend using 2 different accounts. So if you have a primary Skype
account named “Me-Homeâ€, I will recommend creating a 2nd one “Me-Workâ€
ad log in using the 2nd account. That way the confusion ends and you
will see the result.

* Ecto enables Modern Learning in wired classrooms.
Ecto is an online networked collaborative learning platform and a
next-generation course management system that enables teachers to easily
employ modern teaching methods in wired classrooms.

There are two major forces in play in the US K-12 education market –
technology adoption and pressure to improve student learning. Teachers want
to implement modern learning methods to help kids prepare for the 21st
century but they can’t do this with their current learning technology.

Ecto provides the missing piece necessary for the convergence of these two
trends.

*  Content contribution and sharing
Because Ecto is an open system, anyone (students, teachers, publishers,
parents, etc.) can contribute activities to the Ecto Library for free. The
Ecto library also contains thousands of activities from state exams across
the nation. When you submit activities to Ecto, can keep them private or
share them with others. We hope you share! For every shared item added, the
system becomes more powerful for all.

*  Free-style course creation
It's your course - design it how you like. You can create your course
entirely from scratch. Or, you can save time by making use of high-quality
content already in the Ecto library. Simply copy another shared course from
the library and edit the course to suit your needs. If you want your
students to contribute to the course, simply change their contribution
settings.

*  Who created Ecto?
Ecto is brought to you by a small group of educators and developers. We’re
fascinated by the incredible social, collaborative, and learning power of
the internet. So, why can’t students and teachers work with learning content
any way they want? That’s where we come in. We created Ecto so you can
collaborate, create, edit, track and share content with virtually limitless
flexibility.

We’re all teachers and students at various times throughout our lives. We’ve
all had different learning challenges in both roles. By giving teachers and
students the tools to implement social constructivist learning we think
learners of all kinds can take a more direct and active path to knowledge.
We’re passionate about leveraging the best internet technologies to improve
sharing and learning.

Best wishes

John,

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm riding through the rain in a car on my way to
Oman, Bobbi driving while I catch up on emails. I've been working 12 hour
days and when I get a break I grab it. Unfortunately this most recent
holiday fell on an active weekend for Second Life fans which I am having to
miss. I'm sitting here updating my sites on SL
http://www.vancestevens.com/secondlife_edu.htm and preparing to start the
wiki for the creative collaborative writing project I mentioned earlier.

Meanwhile, I just wanted to say that it might be a little early for some of
the questions you ask, such as what effect is this having on the classroom.
I think that what is happening is that the early adopters are getting in
some quality time with the new baby and it might be another several months
or a year before we'll be hearing about impacts of this technology on
pedagogy, as we see happening with blogs for example.

I'd love to hear someone refute me here with a report of promising results
that are happening as we speak.

Vance

I was able to both view and hear the MOV file at the URL given below.

I have placed the link under the heading Why Bother with Second Life? at the
page that can be accessed at the following locations:
   a.. http://www.vancestevens.com/secondlife_edu.htm
   b.. http://www.geocities.com/vance_stevens/secondlife_edu.htm
   c.. http://www.prof2000.pt/users/vstevens/secondlife_edu.htm
I thought this presentation addressed that question very nicely. I wonder
if a presentation such as this would serve as the one-page memorandum Terry
Freedman says, in his K-12 presentation on arguing a case for Web 2.0 tools,
that should be prepared for administrators as an opening salvo in making
that case (other salvos being anticipate objections, having thought through
the next step, etc.) http://k12onlineconference.org/?p=72. Those who know
me will realize I'm being facetious (again), that of course, administrators
who need concepts distilled to one-page memos would not be interested in
viewing a video file, even one so concise and graphic as this one, but I
understand Terry's point, that to be a change agent it is crucial to target
the wider audience, and the file does indeed contain bullet points that
could go into such a memo, and once you have their attention, the MOV file
would be excellent ammo in a follow-on presentation.

I have had to cut short a diving / hiking trip to Oman this weekend due to
rains which are uncommon in the region. I'm back home now and have been
handed a couple of unanticipated days to gather information such as
Graham's, prepare an initial summary, get the wiki up on the topic of Second
Life, and invite you to augment and contibute, if you wish.

More on that soon,

Vance

Hi Teresa,

Thanks very much for your kind comments - I had a lot of fun making
it, using the Mac's iMovie software for the first time, and using only
still photos. In fact there's a couple of errors in it, but as I
produced it to a deadline (I was asked to by a publisher), I ran out
of time.

I'd be more than happy for you to link to it wherever you think would be useful.

Hi Vance,
Thanks for updating your page about Second Life.
http://www.vancestevens.com/secondlife_edu.htm

I think that's a very useful list of links and info there.
I noticed the Ventrilo one has an *r* missing and takes users to air
conditioning site or something so I thought I'd mention that seeing
as you are back home.

Gavin's Ventrilo tips are:

1) Download the Ventrilo Client - HYPERLINK
"http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php"http://www.ventrilo.com/downloa
d.php
(client, not server)
2) Install the client on your machine
3) Run the software and add a new user name for yourself
4) Add a new server
5) Name - Edunation
6) I.P. - 87.117.195.90
7) Port - 4237

Hope that helps.
Sorry to hear you didn't get the well deserved break and a fews days
in the open air ;-)

May I share a frustration that I have had for a long time? I just do not
know enough about how PCs and programs work and the more time I spend
experimenting with beta versions, and the more I use the Internet using
sound and images as well as words to communicate with people like
yourselves, the more I feel in urgent need of doing something about my
ignorance. Things do not work - Skype, Audacity, Ventrilo, I lose my beard
in Second Life and do not know how to get it back. Google mail of Firefox,
or both in combination, periodically rob me of the ability to use
apostrophes or the backslash. On my wife's PC Firefox is incredibly
reluctant to start, it takes patience and repeated clicking over several
minutes to get going. At times, both of our computers are agonizingly slow
not to boot, but to load programs. I have bought books like: "Build Your
Own Computer by Morris Rosenthal or Andy Rathbone's "The Missing Mamual",
but interesting as they are, they do not give me the sort of information I
need which is- a troubleshooting manual - what to do if X occurs or Y does
not function.

Of course, if there are sites, books, tutorials, screencasts etc. aimed at
troubleshooting, I would be delighted to know. But what I have been thinking
is that there is a need for a new list , ideally, an adjunct to this one,
not for nerds but for epeople who would really like to belong to a
communicty of people who could help each other to get more out of their PCs
and the progams they use by knowing more about them. I think there is a need
for instruction that goes beyond how to use Word and Excel and how to create
a blog or a wiki.

What do you all think?

Hello Graham and Venny,
I, too, am not able to open the video. I can only hear the audio as well. My
computer does have Quicktime so this surprised me. This is the message I receive
when I try to open the video:

"QuickTime is missing software required to perform this operation.
Unfortunately, it is not available on the QuickTime server."

I was so surprised since I just bought this brand new computer within this
last month. (My home was broken into and my computer was stolen so I now have
everything brand new.) I even updated my QuickTime program and it still doesn't
work.

I went to the QuickTime website and downloaded the most recent version and it
still doesn't work. I have a Dell Computer with Windows XP. Graham, do you have
any suggestions for me as to how I can access the video you created? I would be
most grateful. I would really like to see your video section and not only just
be able to hear the audio section.

Dennis,

Have just tried the server and can connect fine. My next suggestion would be
that either you are running some kind of firewall on your computer (even the
Windows XP one) which has the program or the ports it uses blocked, or your
service provider has the ports blocked. The first thing to do would be to
check your computer and firewall settings.

Let me know how that goes.

Thanks Valentina,

Voice audio?? Huh? I thought we were talking about enhancing the second
life experience with climate control. You can either take the climate as it
changes through day and night or force it with everyone getting on the same
ventilo server and buying sweaters or bathing suits with Linden dollars as
the server works through bluetooth with the remote device that controls your
a/c settings.

ok, so I've changed the link back to VentRilo. Everyone likes to talk about
the weather but nobody ever does anything about it.

I also put Gavin's more explicit instructions there. Thanks for repeating
them (and Gavin, now that I know which server we are on, I realize I know
the password, so you don't have to send it to me ;-)

Don't you just love the way Second Life intrudes on first? This morning, I
did something very unusual. First, I slept for 8 or 9 hours. Then rather
than wake up in a drizzle on a wilderness trail 2000 meters up a cold
mountain in Oman somewhere, and wonder if my car was parked in the middle of
a flash flood in the wadi below, I woke up in my bed and rather than leave
it immediately, I switched on the news channels (to get alternative news
reports in case Amy Goodman missed anything out on democracynow.org) and
started checking email on my wireless, and somewhere along about my second
cup of coffee Click Online comes on BBC and next thing I know my TV looks
like webhead land as some bloke (trainslation: British dude) who makes money
on Second Life tries to explain to a series of incredulous (and carefully
chosen) common folk how the environment works and how people can actually
buy and sell there, illustrating his concepts by navigating his avatar
through what is to webheads familiar territory.

I immediately went on the web site and tried to find the URL in order to
share it, but it might be easier to find it in the archive after today
because today's program (Dec 1 is what's there now) at
http://bbc.co.uk/click is not broken down into topics yet (though you can
see the interview with MySpace CEO Chris DeWolfe). Also, my Real media
client gave me the following message (but maybe it will help you reach the
URL, eventually)

Server has reached its capacity and can serve no more streams. Please try
again later.
rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/news/olmedia/n5ctrl/tvseq/od/bbc1/nb/rm/video/click_nb.rm\
?start="04:02.0"

ok, I'm giving up on my idea to sell climate control through ventilo for
linden dollars, and getting back to getting the collaborative writing wiki
online at some point this weekend.

best,

Vance

Hi Dennis,

When you created the avatar, did you save it? If so, then it should be
in your inventory in the folder you saved it under. If it's not there,
then I don't think it was saved, or something has gone wrong, and
you'll have to create that blue pullover again.

Hi Dennis,

I have a suggestion : we could redirect Second Life specific questions here:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/secondlifelanguages/

This group was set up to support the optional module for the TESOL EVO
session on 'Digital Gaming & Language Learning', but we've decided to
only use one YG for this session, and introduce this one at the end of
the 6 weeks. Meanwhile, anyone who wants to join it now is very
welcome to do so and use it for discussing SL and language learning.

I'm talking here especially about the specific technical questions
(how do I change my avatar's appearance, etc). We don't have to, of
course, but I'm just thinking of the Webheads on this list who have no
interest in SL.

Vance,

I thnk you might be right in terms of it being too early...

I'm conflating a reply to this with a reply to Graham with regard to the SL
Yahoo Group he mentions and as a plea....

We've witnessed a plethora of problems over the past month as Webheads join
SL and try to get their heads around the peculiar interface and I'm
currently in the process of putting together a more relevant and
user-frendly tutorial than the one everybody skips when they first join. So
a plea to all of you who have tried Second Life:

Please could you write to me off-list and explain what problems you have
experienced, and how you've dealt with them. Things you wish you'd found out
right at the beginning, things you think are worth sharing and things you
would still like to be able to do, or problems you still haven't sorted
out???

I wil put this together into a new user tutorial and make it available to
anybody who is interested. If you could do that over the next three weeks
then I will be able to put the tutorial together over the Christmas / End of
Year period.

Thanks in advance,

Gavin

HYPERLINK
"http://www.vancestevens.com/secondlife_edu.htm"http://www.vanceste-vens.com
/-secondlife_-edu.htm and preparing to start the
wiki for the creative collaborative writing project I mentioned earlier.

Vance

You raise great points, Dennis. One of your contributions to webheads is
that you are a test case, in a way, but unlike other test cases, you DO NOT
GIVE UP. And that's why we will eventually resolve your problems.

Let me offer one hint that is often productive for me. If I encounter a
problem and an error message, I will enter the error message and the
application (ventrilo for example) into Google and let it find solutions for
me. Often these error messages have been posted to a geek's list somewhere
and some other geek has come up with the solution.

You are suggesting creating a separate list, but check out google and see if
there isn't already a list somewhere that's handled that particular problem.

Candy has a quicktime problem, and perhaps she can reach a solution in the
same way.

Well, try that, and if you still can't work it out, just write the list
back. We won't give up either,

Vance

Subject: [evonline2002_webheads] Troubleshooting
