Susan is right on. What has always disturbed me, even when I was young living
in New Orleans, is people so much better off behaving badly and complaining
about their lot in life.

40 years ago this month I was in the worse hurricane to ever directly hit New
Orleans till Katrina this week, a category 5 hurricane. We had levees that
broke, or were blown up by the FBI/military to save our Saturn Missile plant,
take your choice. I know since my bother-in-law was by the levee when it went
and I was very involved in local rescue and rebuilding then and had
"intelligence reports". We had flooded areas, some of the very same locations
in the city with over 30,000 homes I might add, that remained flooded for well
over 6 months before the water was pumped out. We had devastation everywhere,
no power for over 1 month, no water, little in the way of food and no gasoline.
We also had very little looting, no murders, no sick, no poor, no children dying
in the streets. 40 years later the very same city is reacting so differently to
a natural disaster that for those of us who went through Hurricane Betsy and
know what damage a storm like this can do to infrastructure
and the social fabric of a city cannot stomach the break down a civilization
like New Orleans.

The major loss of life 40 years ago was due to the Industrial Canal levee being
breached or blown up to save the Saturn missile plant. The major loss of life
today is due to human incompetence and humans preying on one another
opportunistically. And yet in many ways the two storms, Betsy 40 years ago and
Katrina today are very comparable in their destructive power. But this time
around mankind is the destructive enemy, not nature. That I think calls for a
lesson in humanity comparable to what Susan is saying for her society in Iran,
the entire Middle East situation or for what happened 10 years ago in Rwanda and
should be taught to children before they find out the hard way through
experience which is a very hard teacher.

My family will be fine, because we have a network of resources that embraced
them and their struggle to rebuild their lives will be light compared to many
others in New Orleans, the Gulf Coast and for that matter in other disasters,
wars or strife. But I always use events like this to underscore the opportunity
to learn a life lesson from this pain and strife for to not do so evokes the old
cliche: "Those who do not learn from history are condemn to repeat it."

Thanks to all of you for your kindness and those of you in areas with more
problems than Katrina's victims my prayers and good wishes for a more peaceful
and kinder world go out to you, especially to your country Susan.

Dear Andrew and all American Webheads,

Although I'm sure Andrew is right that we're not seeing even 10% of
what is happening in New Orleans, Mississippi, etc., even the little
we did see was shocking beyond belief. Please accept my heart-felt
sympathy and condolences. I especially feel very much for those of
you who had personal losses. I can relate to that after our 8 years
of war, and pray to God for all those who have lost lives, health,
property, hopes, memories, integrity, or security. I can hardly
bear to think of it.

And yet let us not forget that there are millions of other people
elsewhere, sharing a similar yet crueller, more prolonged fate, not
at the hands of Nature, but at the hands of human beings. I offer a
prayer for one and all in the same breath: Dear God, deliver us
from the hands of Katrina, and deliver us from the hands of George!
Amen.

Praying for you hourly,

Dear Andy,

My heart goes out to you and your family. You have given so much to the
Webheads community that I hope that I/we can give something back. In
the first few days after the hurricane, I was restless and wanted to go
there personally to help shuttle people out, seeing that not much was
happening on the federal level. In fact, my colleagues and I (and
probably a lot of other people) have been shocked at the inadequate
response right after the disaster and the long response time for help to
arrive. In the words of one of my relatives in Iran, speaking of both
the lack of adequate help and the problems with the levees-"How can this
happen in the most developed country in the world?"

Andy, beside the monetary donation, which I have already sent to the Red
Cross, can you think of anything else that can be done from afar? Your
story and description make it very clear that the disaster is one of
far-reaching consequences that will affect all of us for several years
to come. Too little was done now and before, and I hope, our political
leaders are paying attention and learning from this.

BTW, the live video stream at http://www.wwltv.com was excellent. I
watched it for almost 2 hours yesterday.

Teresa, Michael and other Webheads

As a native of New Orleans having spent half of my life there growing up
in New Orleans antebellum Garden District I can tell you whatever news
you get is not even 10% of what is happening.

I have a daughter, son-in-law and three grandchildren who are now in the
midst of relocating to Chicago as their lives are uprooted, not to
mention various aunts, uncles and cousins. My son-in-law and daughter
have to walk away from a large business, remove their children from
schools and begin to plan a whole new life. My son-in-law's family is
an old established New Orleans family with homes on St. Charles Ave. and
a very large food distribution business that supplied all of the area
super markets, restaurants and casinos into the Gulf Coast. Their plant
was blocks away from the Super Dome and they had literally tons of food
they wanted to give to the relief effort that officials failed to use
and subsequently spoiled.

The stories coming out of New Orleans even this evening show things are
steadily degenerating. While some of those at the Super Dome have been
evacuated there are scores (thousands) of people who no longer rely on
the US Government to assist them and have taken matters into their own
hands. George Bush's father lost his re-election to Bill Clinton partly
because of FEMA's failure to respond to Hurricane Andrew in Florida.
This Bush will go down in history as another failure for both Iraq lies
and emergency responses to this US crisis.

For those of you who are interest in how bad things really are, and for
your students to learn some important lessons in current world history
you can monitor events live and archived at this link and get the true
story of what's going on the ground in New Orleans and the surrounding
area: http://www.wwltv.com The link at the top of the page is the live
streaming video reporting with other links to archives. This is the
only true reporting that covers all the gory details, not CNN or BBC.
This is Realty Central.

Kindest regards
Andy Pincon

Good morning Christine:

First let me thank you, Bee, Daf, Teresa, Susan in Iran, Michael and Elizabeth
for your kindness and words of support. We all felt a sense of wanting to help
suffering humanity during the various disasters and conflicts we've witnessed
over our lifetimes including this latest one. What is most distubing is the
human predation that occured in a major US city this time around. I hesitate to
report some of the degenerate acts that have been well documented on the ground
but not reported in the main stream press due to the graphic nature of these
acts of inhumanity. Had this been done in a war zone like Eastern Europe, South
Africa or Rwanda in the recent past there would be an international human rights
commission convened to investigate the acts of agression against humanity by the
criminal elements in New Orleans involved in the murders and mayhem. It gets
worse but I do not think this is the correct forum to air the atrocities that
are being detailed in the daily live video
feeds from www.wwltv.com . For anyone interested in how quickly the thin
veneer of civilization can be stripped off to reveal the very ugly under belly
of humanity I would suggest they monitor the link above, but beware it is
gruesome at times.

What I would like to suggest to the Webheads who are educators around the world
is to use this situation as learning experience for your various classes. For
as I said before, "For those who do not learn from history, are condemn to
repeat it".

As for the recovery and humanitarian relief, it will be a few months to a few
years before anything can be done to relocate families back in the area. Now
that most of the city and suburbs have been evacuated to other states, many will
begin new lives like my daughter and her family and not return to New Orelans or
the suburbs. Not because of the storm damage or flooding, but because they know
how the people reacted this time around when many New Orleans citizens lost
their souls and became primitive savages preying on one another. I do not think
words can express how tragic it is to see a cultural center like New Orleans
sink to such a low level of primitive behavior so quickly, in less than one
week. Most will be in denial and not want the gory truth to come out, but this
time around too many, including foreign tourist who were caught up in the
mayhem, will never forget and never return to New Orleans.

The Tsunami in December was more destructive and yet those populations and
victims reacted in a more civilized manner than many in New Orleans did. This

least that is my hope.

Thanks, Candy, for your sweet message, and Andy, I agree with you
wholeheartedly. The sudden loss of all that one has painstakingly
built over the years is terrible, and I pray for each and every one
of those who are suffering such pain, yet everything is easier to
bear when love, understanding and kindness are there; and even the
slightest hardship is unbearable when we feel that it has been
intentionally and willfully inflicted upon us.

May there always be enough love, wisdom and understanding in the
world!

Warm wishes,
Susan @>---;-

BTW, Andy, if your family are at all like yourself, I am sure they
will soon be back on their feet and learning from the very hardships
and struggles. I pray that it may be so! :-)

know since my bother-in-law was by the levee when it went and I was
very involved in local rescue and rebuilding then and
had "intelligence reports". We had flooded areas, some of the very
same locations in the city with over 30,000 homes I might add, that
remained flooded for well over 6 months before the water was pumped
out. We had devastation everywhere, no power for over 1 month, no
water, little in the way of food and no gasoline. We also had very
little looting, no murders, no sick, no poor, no children dying in
the streets. 40 years later the very same city is reacting so

many ways the two storms, Betsy 40 years ago and Katrina today are
very comparable in their destructive power. But this time around

Rita--
Will we be atttempting voice with YM, or just text? I
might be able to use my husband's PC (which
self-destructed yet again on WinXP recently, but has
been resuscitated), if you are going to do voice.

Otherwise, I'm a typist.

it's midnight my time and if I'm still awake I'll tune in

I had meant to ask, Rita, will you be broadcasting your presentation?
It would be a lot different experience if you were speaking TO your
live online audience during your presentation.

It might be awkward for you to manage doing that in YM, although
someone in your audience could handle getting people into the
conference that would accumulate while you talked, so that all in the
conference could listen.

Then you could also put up a web cam perhaps ?? though this is risky
due to bandwidth issues.

On the other other hand if you used LT / Elluminate you could b/cast
in voice and even web cam while projecting either ppt or web tour to
your online and on site audiences. This worked well for us at TESOL
last year.

You can also use Alado for voice and presentation capabilities though
you would have to arrange for admin permission beforehand.

You can have more than one moderator and and arrange to coordinate the
logistics with someone else so that during the event you just talk and
change slides or web pages, and your co-moderator follows you in the
presentation portal.

Let us know if you're interested in getting this deeply into things.
You could always fall back on YM even if planning a more elaborate
online presentation.

Vance

Dear Rita,

You can also stick to YM, if necessary or more practical for you, broadcast
your presentation to the online group and one of us could record it with
Audacity.

Just another option.

Hello Rita,

Please consider the suggestions of Vance and Teresa. Your conference
presentation sounds extremely interesting. If it doesn't create
excessive inconenience at your end, I believe that many would benefit
from hearing your presentation (either live by webcast, or recorded as
a podcast).

I've recently enjoyed hearing you on a couple of the World Bridges
webcasts. Would it be possible to use Jeff's services again to webcast
the event?

Hi, dear all,

Many thanks for your support and for your volunteering to say hi to
the live audience on Sept 23. As I suspected, I got the news of a
change in the allotted time for my presentation, now slotted at 11.30
am GMT.
Please, those who have offered to show up, see if the new time suits
you...(hope so!)

As for the options you suggest for broadcasting my pres, Vance, I'd
love to be able to do so, but wouldn't like to cut a poor figure in
front of an audience, so maybe I'd need a couple of rehearsal
sessions to feel confident enough..., mainly bearing in mind it'll be
in a place where I have no idea of technological availabilities...,
i.e. dial up or broadband, a technician at hand, etc, plus my need to
be there well in time to check programs...The rehearsal session
should be next week, from home. I'm in Connecticut at the moment,
visiting my kids here, and will be back home by Monday evening, so
I'll still have a week ahead in case we can arrange to meet at LT and
see if I can make it safely...:-))

For those who offered to be present and who needed my YM ID (Lee
Barber..), it's "ritazeinstejer".

Again, my most hearfelt gratefulness to all who are helping me make
of this a successful event. Hugs to all,

Rita

Thank you Tere dear, yes! that is also a good option, but I want to
see first if I could broadcast it from LT, as Vance suggested, which
I know would be the ideal thing.
Anyhow, I'll let you know in time in case I stick to good old YM,
which gives me the confidence I need to spare extra anxiety...:-)
A big hug,

Dear webbies,
I've just been reading "Calming the Fearful Mind: A Zen response to
Terrorism" by Thich Nhat Hanh, Parallax Press, Berkeley, CA, ISBN
1-888375-51-5 and in it I see much wisdom. He wrote the book in response to
a situation somewhat like Daf's at a US airport (sending Daf a big belated
hhhhhhuuuugggg of sympathy).
Some quotes:
"Our way of dealing with terrorism is taking us down a dangerous path of
distrust and fear. It is time to stop. Let us pause. It is time to seek true
strength and security. We cannot escape our interdependence with other
people, with other nations in the world."(p.9) The past posts on the list
lately seem to me to be Webbies showing the way forward! Way to go! One
world linked in a network of communication and light.
"America has the potential to listen to the suffering of her own people and
to remedy discrimination and injustice within. If you cannot listen to your
own people, your fellow citizens, how can you listen to and understand the
suffering in Afghanistan, Iraq, Israel, Palestine?"p.23 Sort of think global
act local?
"America is suffering greatly. The destiny of a nation is too great to leave
to politicians alone. We need people who can listen with their whole heart,
who can listen as a human being and not just as a politician. We have to
select those leaders who know how to listen, even if they are not
well-known."p.19
Hmmmm, Webbies for president? Alternative Webbies Council: Ears for the
World?

"Across the globe, people suffer from very much the same things: social
injustice, discrimination, fear and fanaticism. Fundamentalism is very much
alive in countries around the world. Many people believe that they alone are
on the side of God, and they behave as if they are the only children of God
and the lives of others are not precious. They want God to bless their own
country above all, and not to bless others who they feel represent evil. But
to think that everything the other group does is evil, and everything we do
is good, prevents us from understanding the values of others, and from
recognizing their suffering and fear. Instead of making us stronger, our
unwillingness to listen keeps us vulnerable and afraid." (p.23) Methinks we
need to be careful of reproaching that Bush has got it all wrong
unilaterally, because he does represent the voice of some part of the
nation....a solution must involve ears for all...

"All violence is injustice. The fire of hatred and violence can not be
extinguished by adding more hatred and violence to the fire. The only
antidote to violence is compassion. And what is compassion made of? It is
made of understanding. When there is no understanding, how can we feel
compassion, how can we begin to relieve the great suffering that is there?
So understanding is the very real foundation upon which we build our
compassion.
How do we gain the understanding and insight to guide us through such
incredibly challenging moments that we now face in America? To understand we
must find paths of communication so that we can listen to those who
desperately are calling out for our understanding-because such an act of
violence is a desperate call for attention and for help." (p.106)
Trying to remember to breathe and connect with the deep centre,
