Solar car aims to outshine rivals
A solar powered racing car is hoping to put rivals in the shade
after its unveiled this week.
The made-in-Wales car is due to compete in the gruelling 1,860
miles Panasonic World Solar Challenge in Australia later this
year when vehicles powered purely by sunlight will race from
Darwin to Adelaide.
The electric vehicle uses solar cells, measures an impressive two
metres by five metres and uses carbon fibre and glass fibre in
the bodywork.
The car has been designed and hand built by a Welsh team headed
by a Cardiff lecturer and will be unveiled at the Accelerate
Clusters Summer Conference and Exhibition at Chepstow Racecourse
on Wednesday 20 June.
Sponsored by the Accelerate Clusters programme, it is one of a
number of ‘green’ vehicles on show at the exhibition showcasing
the latest environmentally conscious technologies, services and
vehicles, as well as those powered by alternative fuels.
Accelerate Clusters is a business development programme designed
to support and develop the automotive sector in Wales by
focussing on emerging technologies and niche market
opportunities.
Funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and European Union
Objective One, it has an established membership of more than 180
companies and organisation. It is playing a pivotal role in
shaping the automotive industry of the 21st century and the shift
towards an environmentally conscious operation n Wales
