Ack! So I guess I can scratch that one of the ol' "What To Do Other Than
Sit With The Parents List" while I'm down there. Is there anything else
going on that I can get into? (You Yanks and your 21+)

Btw, the outdoor thing might be kinda snazzy. $Free too$... A nice place to
hold it would be under the Wash/Jeff bridge. Sliding on needles, or rock
stepping over a bum gives it more flavour. B^)

It's all fun and games until you get a syrenge stuck in your foot. Then
it's just Hep. B.

See ya soon. B^)

(Disclaimer: I've pulled an all-nighter @ the school and the couches aren't
that great... B^P)

ditto..

I really learned how to dance at Pat's practice, before he moved up to
Portland. He would do jazz steps for a half hour, then a half hour of
some kinda lesson (like, say, a tuck turn, or some basic 6 count), then an
hour of music - when we would dance or keep working on the steps in
smaller groups.

I'm hoping that the salon can do for other folks what Pat's setup did for
me.. of course, I'm also hoping it'll do that for me too, but I've done
alright at finding my inspiration elsewhere lately.

We've also now got the chance to head up to corvallis, or even berbati's
in pdx.. or at least, now *I* have the chance to do that.. :)

the reason for my personal contribution to the breakup of the tuesday
practice is that i've gotten more than a little bored at dancing the
same dance with the same partners. i wonder if anyone else in eugene
feels the same way.

i'm hoping that george gee and the salon this sunday will help to
reinspire me, and banish these feelings.

We had a *really* awful showing tonight at the practice, so I cancelled
the reservation on the room. With regular WCRK shows, and the Salon,
maybe we just don't need it anymore.

If somebody else wants to take it over, and really promote it, I'll supply
a bunch of mixed discs of music.

Another option would be an outdoor thing, now that the weather is nice.

hey - isn't this great how much local dancing we're getting lately?

the Jive Masters are playing again at the Collier house across the street
from the EMU. It used to be the faculty lounge, and it's a restaurant
now. The band will be playing out on a deck with room for a couple of
couples - and the weather should still be nice.

It's from 4-6, then we can eat, maybe hangout around the ballroom dance
for a while, then check out the West Coast Rhythm Kings at the vet's club.

See ya at John Henry's tonight..

...ooh, that reminds me, somebody should offer to teach a 6 count lesson
on thursday nights from 8-9, or even 8:30-9.. it would really help get
people down there, and get new people dancing. I would volunteer (hah!),
but I'm 'stuck' doing my radio show till 10. :)

**Dance Salon**

Details:
Second and fourth Sundays of the month
Pacific Nautilus / Iron Works, 189 W 8th
1:30 to 3:00 (giving plenty of time for the Crystal crowd to get to Portland)
Plan to chip in $3.00 to rent the space

Beginning Sunday, April 25!

More Details:
It's not about being an expert or being right. It's about being aware of
what you're doing while you're dancing, and being aware of how you're
affecting your partner. It's about sharing that awareness with others with
some talk and lots of dancing.

It's not about acquiring a stash of cool step. It is about finding the main
course rather than always just learning more appetizers. It's about sharing
with others what makes a step work. It's about taking care of the mechanics
of a step to leave/create time to play with it. It's moving toward clearer
communication. It's increasing the chances of your intention becoming
reality. Consider the bacon and egg perspective... the egg is involved, but
the pig is invested. We are looking for pigs!

It's not a replacement for classes or workshops. It is a boot strap
collaboration session where dancers figure things out together and for
themselves. It's an opportunity for people who dance to use what they know
and help strengthen the dance community. Each time we meet a different
member of the group will present something that they would like everyone to
explore... a different dance, step, movement, communication puzzle, etc.

Possible topics to explore:
Jazz Routines/Footwork
Partnering Skills
Song Structure
Styling
Choreography/Performance
History of Swing
Balboa
Black Bottom
Boogie Woogie
Charleston
St Louis Shag
Vintage Shag
Hollywood Style Swing

Possible Materials:
Personal experience from the dance floor
Notes/memory from workshops
Questions/theories/ideas/things you've seen
Videos

Yachats Big Band will be playing at the Newport Middle school on April 17th from
7 to 10pm. It will benefit the bands in the schools. They play music from the
40s and 50s. Lots of swing, big dance floor and a pie auction as well. No age
limit. No alcohol. Lots of fun. If you are in the area come on over.

Sorry if I duplicated this. I'm new to the list and tried to post this, but I
think I only added it to the calendar, so here it goes again......

The HepCats will be palying at Rascal's 211 Washington on Saturday night, March
20th.
We play our brand of Swing and Jump tunes as well as Blues and a little Soul.
Good dance floor with plenty of room and never a crowd, so put on your
Charlestons and grab your Zoot Suits, The HepCats are in town.....

PS Come on down, we need all the support we can get at Rascals.

Thanks

more than that, his band is amazing.. they're as close to basie as you can
get, other than the ghost band. I think he's playing as the jump, jive &
wailers - which sounded like they played a lot of hamp tunes.. it's a
bunch of really really top notch NY jazz musicians.. infact, they didn't
have their usual drummer when they were in CA a few weeks ago because he
was actually playing with Hamp..

better still, we *might* be able to get him into the vets ballroom on the
thursday of that week..

i hope i hope i hope,
kevin

Hey Eugene Folk,

George G.... Is it danceable?

Just noticed the Crystal schedule and saw that He's playing during my
Spring Break. Now if they would put something in there May 1st, I'd be set.
Later.

Pepe's great and I catch them every time I can up here in Portland. Just wanted
to warn you though that there's definitely more latin stuff than swing.
They put on a great show though, worth catching.

k, who probably won't make it down

For the adventurous ones in Portland and those that don't have anything to
do in the South part of the Willamete Valley this Saturday, the one and
only Pepe and the Bottle Blondes will be playing on the Oregon State
University campus from 8 to 11:30. If you're looking to practice those
Cha-Cha steps that y'all learned from Gail and Uwe while being able to get
in some lindy as well, this will be the place.

There will be two hours of lessons before hand. Heidi and I will be
teaching Charleston variations for an hour - from 6-7 and there will also
be an begining Argentine Tango lesson as well - 7 to 8pm. The cost will
be $12 from Community members and $8.50 for students - and that's any
student no matter what school you are enrolled in: high school, and
university, community college....

I hope to see lots of you there and if directions are needed email me at
<hazletok@...>.

later,

Keith Z. Hazleton

i bought one of their (cubanismo's) albums for my dad a couple of
years ago. they're latin jazz, and made up of very accomplished
musicians. the album i got had an intensity that surprised me. they
definitely lay down a solid groove, and they could be considered a
dance band in a pinch, but salsa not swing.

ouch. just checked and they're going on for $17.50. that's another
sunday i won't be hitting the crystal (along with this sunday. steve
lucky does very little to excite me, and i have two back to back
final reviews in school starting at 8:am the next day).

Yeah, too bad for the ladies... B^P Sorry about not making it to Jellyroll.
I had to get up early to start the new term.

I'm *thinking* of coming down Friday April 2nd and leave Monday April 5th.
Any idea who Cubanismo is? They're playing on the 4th at the Crystal... My
guess is their gunna be Latin... Am I mistaking?

Btw, any word on where Michelle was on Friday when I was down? Girl thinks
she's too good for us.. B^)

Hi folks,
I wanted to get an idea of who's going up this Sunday to see Steve Lucky and if
anyone wants to carpool. I will offer my car...(and even drive it) though it's
not nearly as luxurious as, say, Michele's or Les'. The Sunday Lindy class now
ends at 3pm so there's plenty of time to get up there.
Let me know!

Gerlinger is happening, of course - but it's not WCRK at the Vet's.. I
think it's Skip Jones, and I don't think he gets the lindy hopper stamp of
approval.

I've never taken any classes from them, but Keith and Vi are both amazing
dancers, and really fun people.. heck, I think I'm even gonna do jazz
movement stuff.

hey everyone.
i was wondering about peoples plans for this weekend. there are two
prime event in portland: the Keith and Vi workshop on saturday and
Jellyroll @ the crystal on sunday. check below for info on the
workshop. and a special bonus for all you ladies, rumor has it that
Chris Herz will be there for jellyroll.

i'm interested in hitting both events, but i'll not be able to spend
saturday up there due to my constant and unyielding school load.

what are people planning, and would anyone be interested in
carpooling (read: giving me a ride in exchange for gas money,
possibly a drink, and a ticket to jellyroll if things go well
tonight)?

otherwise it's probably the standard friday night of gerlinger
(ballroom) and vet's (west coast rhythm kings).

see you soon,
christopher.

Friday night the West Coast Rhythm Kings are playing again at the vet's
club..

If I can track down a CD player (portable or not) to hook up to their PA
system, I think I can DJ between sets.. so we can have good recorded music
between the live stuff.

Whee,
Kevin

Well...being as Valentine's day is such a romantic holiday and
all..we were thinking it would be nice to spend it together. I was even
thinking about renting "Ghost", but every copy in town has been reserved
already.

I guess I could be convinced to head up to Cowvallis to do something, but
then again,
I might stay in Eugene where there is more
exciting things to do, like...say...oh, I dunno...clip
  my toenails.

Vet's Club Sat. night...

See ya there,

we need to make some plans for this sunday. i, for one, am quite

there's this awful rumor that kevin and andy are planning on spending
the evening alone watching television. i think it's important that
they speak up and put an end to this vicious and derisive gossip.
