Why do we aim "to promote the use of the international language,
Esperanto"?
(and, therefore: How much is enough?)


The Tura Beach Bridge Club could have an aim to promote Bridge
playing in order to have more people to play with and to share the
financial cost of insurance.
They will be pleased if each member mentions it to a friend or two
each year.

World Vision Australia has an aim to promote voluntary financial
assistance to the third world to save lives and improve their
quality. World Vision will run a large office in Melbourne and
smaller ones in many towns. They will advertise their contact details
and answer their phones. They may even call people directly. They
will train volunteers to stand in shopping centres. They will produce
attractive promotional materials and  produce prime-time  television
commercials. They would consider successful promotion  by the Bridge
clubs' standard, no success at all.

What do you think?

Is our `promotion' of Esperanto about achieving peace? Are we out to
change the world?

Is it a matter of whim? urgency? importance? mission?

How much `promotion' is enough ? What do we hope to achieve by it?

What is the AEA?


The Australian Esperanto Association is a non-profit organization .
This means that it uses all monetary surplus solely for the purposes
of its objectives and not to financially benefit its members in any
way, and contains provisions that, should it fail,
  assets be distributed to a 'like' organization and not to its own
members.
Our status, thus far,  is clear. However, there are two main types of
non-profit organisations:
Some not-for-profit organizations are "Charitable and Benevolent" and
this status affects their eligibility to receive certain grants and
taxation advantages. Charitable and benevolent purposes are those
that seek to do good towards others in the community. This may
include relieving poverty or sickness, addressing the needs of the
young or the aged, advancing education or otherwise benefiting the
community.

Other not-for-profit organisations exist, perfectly legitimately,
solely for the benefit and enjoyment of their members.

Deciding what kind of non-profit organisation AEA is will help us
find role models and ideas about how to help it flourish.

For example:

1. Does AEA have a mission to fulfill?
2. Is the AEA most like:
     A church?
     Alliance Francais?
    The Flat Earth Society?
    A bridge club?
     Lions/Rotary/Apex ?
    The Japanese Language Teachers' Association?
    World Vision?
     Other?
3. Is AEA  a service club?
4. How much infrastructure, funding and human resources does our kind
of NPO need?


The Australian Esperanto Association Inc. is a
non-profit organization incorporated in the Australian Capital
Territory. Its aims are

1. to promote the use of the international language, Esperanto;
2. to increase, among its members a strong sense of solidarity, and
to develop in them understanding and esteem for peoples of other
countries;
3. to foster co-operation between Esperanto organisations.
4. to organise nation-wide congresses and other congresses and
conferences.

Applications for membership are invited from all persons who share
the above aims.)

CALL FOR ARTICLES FOR WOMEN IN ACTION NO. 2-2004

Women in Action (WIA), a magazine published by Isis International-Manila,
covers a broad range of issues affecting women globally, but focuses on the
particular needs and concerns of women in the Global South*.

Women in Action will feature the theme "Examining Feminist and Social
Movements"
for its No. 2-2004 issue. Articles on the following topics are welcome:

1. Locating (assessing, examining and analysing the impact of) the feminist
movement,
feminists and feminism(s) in social movement spaces such as the World
Social Forum,
Trade Unions, anti-WTO/anti-globalisation, etc.

2. Why do women or women's groups choose to engage in the UN as a site of
resistance
or struggle? What are the new forms of engagement with UN processes? For
example,
how to utilise Beijing Plus 10 and International Conference on Population
and Development
(ICPD) Plus 10 processes as means of engaging in critical conversations at
levels
with governments, multilateral institutions and with each other.

3. Promoting and securing women's health and rights post-ICPD in Cairo
(1994) and
post-Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing (1995).

4. What are the issues, challenges, implications and impact of gender
mainstreaming
in the Global South? Has gender mainstreaming co-opted feminism and the
feminist
or women's movement?

5. The feminist or women's movement and discourse or debates around the
South-South
or North-South relationship or dynamics; the evolution of the North-South
and South-South
feminist relationship.

Also welcome are articles that discuss other aspects of information and
communication technology
(ICT) and media as they impact on women of the Global South*. Such articles
will be included in
our regular sections.

Interested contributors are also encouraged to submit photos, graphics or
comic strips that may
be used for their article or for the issue in general. We provide a modest
honorarium for articles
and photos or graphics that get published. Photos or artwork should be in
TIF format, scanned
at a resolution of 300 dpi. Please zip the file before e-mailing it. You
may also send it by post.

Mi estas iteresi en multe ajxoj, precipe lingvoj, kaj Esperanto estas pli
facila ol alia lingvoj kaj eble pli praktika.  Ankaux, mi pensas ke mi
trovos alias lingvoj pli facila post lerni Esperanto (precipe euxropa).

Mia apoligioj por mia maltre paroli, mi devus pli praktikado. :)

Vision: Esperanto in Australia at Maturity

Schools

Esperanto is a normal part of primary education, like reading,
spelling, maths, sport, science, singing and recorder playing. Most
kids do it and develop email and telecam relationships with kids in
several countries during primary school. Esperanto is usually
integrated into the class theme-work.  In high school, about quarter
of students continue formal study with Esperanto, quarter do another
language and half just have a latent understanding of how it is to be
bilingual. Research projects in science and geography sometimes
require students to use their primary-school Esperanto and English
teachers sometimes compare passages and grammatical constructs with
the Esperanto equivalent.
  TV shows for kids are produced in Esperanto and shown during the
school day and sometimes after school. Kids sections in the newspaper
often have Esperanto puzzles and jokes because beginner Esperanto is
a common factor in children's experience.

Adults- professional use

Most primary school teachers teach Esperanto to their own classes.
Because of this, Esperanto is an important part of teacher training
and professional development. Teachers also constitute a substantial
group of competent adult users of the language. They communicate
internationally to establish joint educational projects and travel
using Esperanto, recreationally as well as professionally.

ILEI Australia has thousands of members and takes a lively interest
in developing the best methods for teaching Esperanto to pre-literate
infants and other age groups and how to maximize the cultural
educational value of that time. It runs courses on the Cseh method,
Esperanto for the print disabled and for indigenous students,
efficient training methods for busy corporate teams, and how to raise
babies bilingually. Courses are well subscribed because they are, in
the main, covered by normal professional development budgets.

International aid organizations universally employ Esperanto for
interdepartmental communication and , increasingly, for refugee and
development work.

Community Services staff and the armed forces also use Esperanto
professionally. Some of the remote Aboriginal communities have
decided to run primary school in the local language, introducing
Esperanto in the same way as mainstream schools. Adult community
members insist on using Esperanto to communicate with government
agencies and the world in general.

Esperanto is a common semester or year course for undergraduates
studying with any thought of working overseas. The course refreshes
and upgrades the immature vocabulary learned in primary school to
equip the student for use of the language in a professional context.

Adults- Recreation

Some adults do courses recreationally: As well as basic
Esperanto, `introductory' for old people and `refresher' for younger
adults, courses are also offered in special interest aspects of
Esperanto such as creative writing, cultural explorations, collecting
etc. Local clubs provide some of these things and they occur
informally through U3A and community colleges.
Major movies are often available in Esperanto and movies made in
languages other than English are usually dubbed in Esperanto.
Several species of world music are produced in Esperanto and appeal
to different demographics.
International adventure documentaries are often made in Esperanto to
access the global market of people interested in travel and adventure.

Australian Esperanto Association and ILEI Australia

The association no longer needs a powerful promotional strategy
within Australia, since Esperanto is now recognized and fulfilling
its role and the  agenda of the AEA in regard to education is
significantly changed by the adoption of Esperanto  into the
mainstream curriculum.

Some members of AEA remain vigilant regarding linguistic issues, such
as neologisms, and active in monitoring, and promoting or resisting,
changes in usage motivated by political correctness and post-modern
circumstances.

Others are interested in helping other countries follow our
educational lead or in providing foreign aid and environmental
protection to particular isolated communities by means of Esperanto.
AEA, in collaboration with UEA, operates a volunteer centre for
Esperantists wishing to work overseas for such causes.
AEA also runs an international exchange program for teachers and
other professional users of Esperanto, language and culture festivals
(including Harmony Day and Pax, the longest running Australian
festival and a cultural icon) and various social gatherings.

The commission for Oceania is doing exciting work contacting new non-
English speaking groups in the Pacific as their internet connectivity
increases. The potential of Esperanto tourism is starting to be
realised.

Summer School is now more social than educational, since learning
opportunities closer to home are easily available,  and  is now held
in a different location in Oceania each year to stimulate local
economies and communities while giving Esperantists language
immersion and a convivial and memorable experience.

AEA remains the authority and focus of excellence in specialist uses
of Esperanto. It operates examination courses in the highest
standards. The baza and meza are largely irrelevant now, being
replaced by common undergraduate refresher courses, but the alta and
klera remain somewhat specialist achievements.

AEA has a publishing arm which produces and promotes Esperanto books,
magazines, music CDs and DVDs with especially Australian flavour,
high linguistic standards and a professional approach.
The library and bookshop have quite changed roles from in 2004 since
state libraries and general bookshops, including Amazon, now stock
extensive Esperanto offerings.

AEA maintains relationships with other Esperanto organizations world-
wide including SAT, TEVA, UMEA, TEJO etc.

Other organisations

The Bahai community has finally accepted Esperanto as the world
auxillary language and is conducting meetings, worship and
celebrations in Esperanto for ever-growing congregations.


All states have thriving associations with numerous clubs where
people gather to practice their language for travel and to meet with
travelers from other places. The state clubs are no longer working
hard to sell their idea, they now conduct the kind of activities
listed for the AEA on a smaller scale.

The integration of Esperanto into the normal life of Australia is
more-or-less complete.
